The place was a little smaller inside than it seems with dim lighting. The seats are a little closer together but enough room to be comfortable sitting. There is a policy that each person must get a meal dish, this doesn't include apps or salads so if you are planning to all share this is not for you. We got the 2 meals which includes soups, dish, and dessert which allowed us to try both soups and desserts. Of the dishes got the Chicken Kebab, Kabuli Palaw (lamb), Mantoo, and Kofta Chalaw (beef). The soup was pretty good coming in a small bowl. The Mashaba reminded of wedding soup and was the one I liked best. Each dish comes with a lot of rice and by a lot i mean a huge plate full. It was a lot of rice for supposedly one person with meat ratio being quite a bit less. My favorite had to be the Beef, the sauce of this was really good I was just eating the sauce and rice itself. The sauce on the Lamb was really good too but there was just a lot of bone. The Chicken was a little on the saltier side but a great dish. The Pasta was not a fan favorite, the vegetable flavor was a little strong and there was a lot of it. The workers were really patient with us even though we were taking a long time to order. For dessert they have us extra so each person could have some a which was so nice of them. We ended with some complimentary tea which washed everything down. read more

Love this BYOB Afghani resto. Yummy, unique, hearty and cozy. Perfect for a cold winter night. Get the table d'hote- it's worth it since you'll get to try a soup or salad, an appetizer, a main, dessert and tea or coffee. Just realized I didn't get my tea (I was just there last night. I loved the mashaba soup, the mantoo and the filet mignon main. So filling. The dessert is light and yummy. Kind of like a milky pudding. Service was amicable. We are 5 university students who have been living off dining hall food for the past 3 months. As soon as we stepped in, we noticed the cozy, warm ambiance and were greeted with the upmost warmest hospitality. This was place is a gem. Great atmosphere. It's byob and there's a store a few meters away for some wine or beer you can bring here if you want. That store also has some non alcoholic options which is nice. The spices were on point, the bread for the table is warm and have beautiful dipping sauces. This place was very good for dinner. I would think almost everyone gets one of the prix fixe meals which consists of starter, appetizer, entree, and dessert. It's a lot of food and they paced the meal nicely. My hot beef noodle soup was brought out very quickly and it came with bread with several dipping sauces. All 3 sauces were great, but I preferred the red spicy one. I chose the mantoo for my appetizer and it was 6 pieces nicely dressed. I could have eaten several plates of these, they were awesome. My entree was excellent, the lamb shank with carrot/raisin rice. A huge piece of lamb that was falling off the bone; no need for a knife. The rice was super flavorful and I couldn't get enough of the carrots/raisins, such a great pairing with the lamb. Not exactly sure what the dessert was but it was a very light, white pudding(?) topped with pistachios. I couldn't quite figure out the flavor, but it was very good and not very sweet. A perfect ending to a great meal. Service was good, although we had to flag someone down a few times. Would definitely return when in Montreal. read more

Montrealers are no strangers to Khyber Pass, as the exterior of the restaurant was always a show stopper (which has been deemed a fire hasard unfortunately, by the city) I have been here quite a few time throughout more than a decade now and everything remained the same. It's a tight space, cozy and more on the darker side. You can bring your own wine, in the summer you can sit in terrace in the back and it is so cute The service is hit or miss depending on who you get that day but it is mostly very friendly and courteous. (We once had a really spaced out waiter that it became comical after 10 mins, we never had anyone who was rude) I usually go for the lamb or the vegetarian plate. The soup is all good but I think their show stopper is the lamb and the aubergine. I recommend his for a nice discovery dinner out w friends or family :) read more

Attention rice lovers!!! You need to make a pit stop here :) If you order the Mourg Kebab (chicken brochette), it'll be served on a lovely bed of 3 colored basmati rice: white rice seasoned with cumin, green rice made with coriander sauce and brown rice seasoned with saffron. The grilled chicken is yellow (looks like tumeric color) is sooo juicy and delicious...the only negative about it is that there's only 1 kebab! My Kabuli Palaw (lamb shank) was equally delicious. Tender and fall off the bone good. Beware if you don't like fatty clumps cause there is a little bit. Easy enough to separate out. The lamb shank is buried in a bed of yummy brown rice, sprinkled with shredded carrots and plump raisins. My friend and I really liked the Afghan styled side of salad--simple, lemony, fresh and punchy. Upon arrival, the waiters were joking with us and welcoming. When we asked about the cups of sauce in the center of the table, our waiter deadpans that it's Afghan shooters. We pause and burst out laughing and then he explained the yogurt and peppers sauces. They gave us basket of warm Afghan flatbread and we nibbled on it while waiting to order. After our meal we each opted for a cardamom green tea as there's only one choice of dessert, the rosewater pudding. Since neither of us like rosewater, we passed on dessert. read more

Little gem on Duluth street. It was on my list forever and finally had the chance to make it. I have never tried Afghani food before but very familiar with Persian food and have to say that they are quite similar. I was there in a Friday night and it was packed. We went for the table d'hôte and basically had the soup which was quite good, the dumplings weren't anything to brag about. My favourite part of the meal was the korma chalaw which is lamb shank in a tomato sauce which came with 3 kinds of basmati rice spiced differently and salad. It really hit the spot! I am not a big pudding fan so the desert didn't quite do it for me sadly enough. Next time, I would for sure go with the lamb and basmati rice trio. This place was such a hidden gem! When I originally walked by the place seemed deserted, but the pictures on yelp made it look amazing and I took a chance. I asked to sit outside and it was a beautiful garden area that was full of other diners. The service was great and the Kabuli Palaw with chicken was one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten. Tried it for the first time a few weeks ago and I am so impressed. The food is so good and such good value. The table d'hôte is worth every penny. The service was good but a bit slow at times. They also don't accept MasterCard which I find strange. But I would go back in a heartbeat. The food was so delicious and the portions were very big. I love this place. Its like one of those holes in the wall places that serves really awesome food from countries you would never visit. In this instance, it's afghan food. The decor is kinda cavey and orientally, which is interesting. Kind of makes you feel like ur in a cave. Its almost always crowded everytime i went. Its great for groups and for a first date type dinner. Byow - yes! Bring ur own drinks and enjoy the food and your alcohol I love that there isn't a lot of selection on the menu. And i love that there are fixed meal plans. A full course with desert and tea for 27$ or including an appetizer for $30. And then. You just pick which one you want. I suggest splitting the appetizers among yourselves so you can try everything. And always get the lamb! My favorite dishes are the lamb with brown rice and carrots and the lamb with tomato sauce. Heavenly dishes! I always have alot of left overs to take home. Portions are huge. My only complaint is that the salad has raw white onions. Im a raw onion hater, and they can't remove them. I have never tried Afghan food but I thought it might be very similar to asian food due to the proximity of Asia. We rented a table next door of the main restaurant. The decoration has this cave feel-like atmosphere, it was underground with dimly lit light. It was light enough to see where we are going. After we ordered, I received my lentil soup and it was very good. My main dish, the portion was big enough to feed two people. Obviously, I couldn't finish it all. The dessert was a rose yogourt... I am not sure what they called it but it tastes similar to creme brule. I devoured that thing in five seconds. Overall, I give this place a 4 stars. Something that tastes this great for under 25 dollars for a three courses meal is something I will rave to the world. read more

Soo soo good. What brought us to this establishment is their outside decor and what a good decision we made. In the back there is outdoor seating and inside is very cozy and homey. This is the first time trying Afghani food and it was very good. Most of their menu consist of kebab and lamb. Both my girlfriend and I had two different varieties of lamb. Mine was a leg of lamb which fell right off of the bone and my girlfriend had lamb in sauce which came with 3 different types of rice. Very good Just some advise get here about 30min before they close at 10p because we were not able to order the combo deals because either they did not have what we wanted or 2 the chefs wanted to leave so they did not make it for us. Even because of that I still give this place 5 stars because the service was good and even though they did not give us what we wanted they gave us an additional 15% off the bill. One last thing, the prices here are very accommodating and will not take a lot from your wallet but add a lot to your stomach. read more

Was in Montreal for the weekend, visited Kyhber Pass on a friend's recommendation. We (2) were not disappointed. Atmosphere was quaint, a little bit crowded (at night on a Friday, so not a surprise at all). Didn't wait at all for a seat. Neither patrons spoke French nor had we eaten substantial Afghani food but the waiter was very helpful in understanding what we were ordering. Both patrons ordered the Table D'Hote which ended up being sufficiently filling if not a bit overkill. Vegetarian combo: perhaps the best okra and eggplant I've ever had. It was obvious that all of the ingredients had been marinating for a substantial amount of time as they practically fell apart in my mouth. Cauliflower and spinach were also very good. Korma Chalaw: I did not have this but was almost tempted to order it (even as a vegetarian) upon seeing it brought to other tables. My dinner partner ordered this and seemed to enjoy it, easily devouring a portion which typically would have caused difficulties finishing. Soupe maison: maybe my favorite usage of red lentils. Amazing flavor and mouth feel, would definitely recommend. Even my omnivorous dinner partner preferred this to her soup... Soupe mashaba: no substantial comments here. I did not try it but my dinner partner did not love the soup. It wasn't especially terrible, it just dulled in comparison to the rest of the meal. Rices: Both entrees were served with three different rices, substantially distinct not only in color (green, orange, white) but also in flavor. Both entrees were also served with a "salad" which was essentially just cucumbers, lettuce, and diced tomatoes -- nothing substantial but a nice refreshing complement to the otherwise warming meal. Finally, Rose water pudding: mildly flavorless but a nice way to unnerve the stomach following the incredibly flavorful entrees. Overall, no regrets having spent one of our few nights in Montreal here and I would definitely consider returning in the distant future. read more

We came across the restaurant about 10 years ago after an Alouettes football game and after enjoying an amazing day at the game we enjoyed just as great a time out on the back terrace enjoying some cold beers (byob) and some fantastic food. I have since been back to the restaurant many times and it has become one of our regular spots. The atmosphere is nice and intimate and very cozy and the food never disappoints. I have at time ventured away from the table d'hôte but very rarely as you really can't go wrong with that great deal. I won't bother listing all the great items on the menu but I will say that the afghan dumplings are fantastic as well as the lamb shank and the meat balls. They also have a Lentil soup that is a great start to the meal especially on a nice crisp winter day. Service is always very friendly and often comes with a little comedic relief. A very nice warm and cozy place for a BYOW multi-course meal! It is nice change from the greek and italian options in the area. The atmosphere was perfect for the very very cold night that we went! Soups were both good. We shared the Mantoo entree which gets you the most bang for your buck entree wise and was a great mix of flavours. I had the lamb shank, which was fall-off-the-bone tender. My husband had the lamb kebab which was cooked perfectly. I normally love rice but didn't find much of a flavour difference between the three rices offered. I really enjoyed the fresh salad. As someone who isn't vegetarian, but eats a lot of vegetarian food and doesn't crave meat I was DELIGHTED to find this place. First of all, who would expect to find Afghan food in Quebcoise country? Here's why I was recommend you try this place. Amazing Location: We sort of stumbled upon it as we were exploring the Plateau neighbourhood (possibly my favorite part of the city). If you're a tourist (like we were), I definitely recommend going up to Mount Royal to get an eagle eye view of the city, then walking around the Plateau neighbourhood. There are a ton of really cute restaurants, bars, boutiques to keep you busy. BYOB: There's a SAQ on the main street (2 blocks from the restaurant). So you can pick up some wine to enjoy with your meal. Yayy! Ambiance/Outdoor seating: The restaurant itself has a really cute patio (or as the people of monreal like to call it, terrace) , decorated in Afgani fashion. It's very romantic but also great for groups of people. Food: I think the biggest win is that you can find something that appeals to vegetarians and meatlovers alike. The vegetarian combo plate was plentiful and enough to share among two people. My friend tried the lamb kababs and said it was possibly the best he'd ever had. Service was attentive. But one star off because the waiter insisted on being snobby and speaking in french - even though his english was perfectly fluent and he knew that not everyone on the table was from quebec. Nice little place - Often packed so make sure you book! Can get very cramped, in a everyone-bumps-in-your-chair-as-it's-also-in-the-way kind of way so don't expect a cosy romantic atmosphere.
