My husband was recently diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer and we scheduled to see 3 different surgical oncologists- 1 at City of Hope, 1 at UCLA, and 1 at Cedars to determine who would do the surgery. I am completely disappointed with the care at Cedar's and concerned. For one, the doctor arrived 2 hours late for the appt. No one let us know about the delay. HIs "scribe" who finally put us in the room, didn't introduce himself, and asked if my husband had the "test for cancer in his blood". He later whisked my husband off to get the Signatera blood test by Natera without getting a prior auth from the insurance company or letting us know if insurance would cover the test. I later found out that this test is done for following prostate cancer after treatment and not prior to treatment. No other doctor had recommended this test and we knew that the PSA post op was the standard of care. I also realized that doing 1 Signatera blood test wouldn't be enough and that my husband would have to re-do this blood test every 6 months or so. We had planned following up with serial PSAs which is the standard of care. For two, when my husband was put into the exam room, we were told it would be another 30 minutes. The staff said they had shortages and something about the PAs were doing ultrasounds. When the doctor walked into the room he said he didn't do robotic radical prostactectomies anymore and quickly referred us to his associate, whom we didn't want to see. On Dr Kia Michel's website he is still listed as doing these procedures. We wasted 2 hours of our time just to be told Dr Michel doesn't do the standard of care surgery for this type of cancer. Next, the office/scribe/doctor recommended pulse wave therapy for erectile dysfunction. This therapy is not only not covered by insurance, it is not FDA approved. It is also used for patients who don't respond to other treatments, of which none of this applied to my husband who has prostate cancer and currently doesn't have erectile dysfunction. (His surgery is scheduled at UCLA on December 19) The office wanted my husband to get pulse wave therapy on the penis pre- operatively. This treatment costs $500 a session and numerous sessions are recommended. Again, none of which is covered by insurance. Fourth, the office called and spoke to me to offer my husband "vascular". They person that called me was not clinical, could not explain why this was being recommended, and could not explain what it was. I quickly said "I have no idea what you are talking about and why you are recommending "vascular". Next, someone from the front office called and spoke with me because they wanted to go over the benefits. The benefits are under my name because I am the primary insurance carrier. I asked if they wanted me to pay the bill/co-pay for pelvic floor PT that my husband was having in Dr Michel's office and they said "no". I asked again, why they were calling and they couldn't tell me except for they wanted to "go over benefits". To be cont. read more

This practice charges for way more tests/exams than is necessary, leaving you with a high insurance bill. I imagine it's to charge insurance for more things than is necessary. They do not explain the exams/procedures as they happen or explain why it's needed. It wasn't clear during the appointment what would be included in the office visit and what is an added cost. And there were many added costs. It is an unethical practice and I would avoid unless you have a really low deductible read more

I would not recommend Dr. Kiarash Michel, unless you have plenty of time and good insurance. Read other people negative reviews and take them seriously. I wish I did. In my opinion, they make multiple tests on every visit, which may not be absolutely necessary. After 5 years, I'm moving on from Comprehensive Urology and Dr. Kia Michel. While I'm sure Dr. Michel is a competent doctor, in my experience, his practice apparently focuses more on charging patients for services and tests vs. finding an effective treatment plan. My issue is enlarged prostate (BPH) and while Dr. Michel did lots of tests and touted various treatments - some of which would not be covered by insurance - I never got a sense that he really saw me as an individual patient. Perhaps this is because he focuses more on prostate cancer vs. BPH? If so, why wouldn't he say so and refer me out? Perhaps it was because I was just another income source that he could use to charge my insurance for tests that I didn't see the value of - and that I had to then ask him about afterward (because follow-up from his office was spotty). He would then wave his hand and say "Oh, you're fine." But why run the test? Just to "be sure?" Sure of what? There wasn't a lot of rational thought behind his treatment or plan (if there was one). For example, he recommended a new minimally invasive procedure to shrink my prostate which involved a lot of time and testing to set up with an outside doctor. After all that prep (time out of my day and my business), that doctor actually dissuaded me from getting the procedure, saying that I was not an ideal candidate. Dr. Michel was emphatic that I should reconsider. When I asked why, he said: "Well, all the guys who have this done love it." But those "guys" aren't me. I explained my concerns and my goals with managing my BPH and why I was skeptical about this particular procedure, but he seemed not to care. His suggestion: let's do some more tests. Sure: more charges to the insurance company. That's when I decided: I'm not going back. Other annoying issues: - Dr. Michel is usually late for his appointments so I made sure to schedule at the beginning of the day so I would be his "first-up." - No telehealth. Dr. Michel doesn't "do" phone calls. You have to come into the office or talk to his PA. I live 45 mins away in good traffic. Really? - No connection to the centralized records database "My Chart" used by Cedars-Sinai and UCLA Health (and other So. Cal health systems), so no transparency on test results. You have to call the office and get them to email them to you. So they have a fancy new office but can't be bothered to provide digital access to their patients? Subsequently, I have consulted with a few other urologists who have been a lot clearer about all the available strategies for my BPH - something I never got from Dr. Michel. Looking back, it feels like Dr. Michel was happy for me to remain ignorant so he could be the expert, and dictate (charmingly) what should be done, but never really address my issues or concerns in an effective or efficient manner. In looking at my records, I now realize that I probably lost about 2 years going around and around with Dr. Michel when I could have followed a more personalized and effective treatment plan. read more

After multiple visits to Dr. Kia Michel office, through observation and interaction, I have concluded that everyone on the staff is well trained, professional, and pleasant. There are two staff members who stand out for me. Maz is intelligent, capable, knowledgeable, and patient. Gennessis can make anybody feel better through her smile and her caring. read more

I was seeing my gynecologist for recurrent UTIs. She tried multiple options including daily suppressive antibiotics. Unfortunately I kept getting infections despite all attempts. I was then referred to a whole slew of urologists who couldn't come up with any other effective options. I was talking to another girlfriend, who had had a similar history. She had been referred to Dr. Michel by her gynecologist and Dr. Michel had figured out a treatment plan that stopped her frequent urinary infections. I decided to make an appt and from the moment I met Dr. Michel, I was at ease. He was very personable, very smart and had a great team. After reviewing my history and examining me, he came up with a multi-pronged approach including pelvic floor treatments and thermiva. Due to Dr Michel I am not getting those terrible urinary tract infections anymore. I didn't realize how those infections were impacting my life. Now that im healthy again, I realize the difference. Michel Kiarash sent me a $1,000 bill in the midst of a global pandemic & 3 years after I had visited his office (where I had a poor experience). All costs were supposed to be covered by insurance, but this 3 year old letter states I owe them $1k because they were unable to get insurance to cover the visit. During my appointment, Michel also firmly insisted on completing a prostate exam despite me being only 26 years old at the time, to which I refused. I would not recommend his office! They rushed my appointment (when they were actually present) and did not listen to anything I had to say. In total, I saw Michel for less than 2 minutes and spent over 30 minutes waiting despite being on-time for my appointment. I then spent the majority of my 1 hour appointment alone in one of the rooms waiting for someone to come. read more

My experience with Dr. Michel has been positive. I usually see the nurse practitioner since I go in for an early morning appointment. I have been a patient for many years. The service I have experienced in the exam room I give 5 stars....BUT The problem I have experienced is that it takes long to get an appointment and the office does not return phone calls. This has gotten worse over the years. This week I had to get Cigna involved and their two phone calls were not returned. I just called and ask for the Dr. Michel's voice mail and was told that they can only take a message. Most Doctor's do not know that the front staff may be failing the patients. Dr. Kiarash spends the majority of his patient time extolling the benefits of a procedure NOT covered by insurance without the decency of informing you of that fact. Sadly, his approach isn't patient focused or sensitive as his focus appears to be on the HUGE payday he'd get by not only the non-insurance covered procedure but the additional add on services for what he deems 'more enhanced lifestyle'--extremely overrated with disappointingly 'underperforming service'. The doctor was nice for the few minutes spent with him but his underling was confused, gave contradictory information and what should have been a simple outpatient procedure turned into full blown surgery with complications that left permanent damage. After several years of treatment for BPH, a biopsy in Oct. 2013 revealed I had prostate cancer. The urologist I was seeing (not Dr. Michel) laid out my options-- surgery, radiation, watchful waiting-- and my "voyage of discovery" began. Dr. Keith Garb, my fantastic primary physician at the Motion Picture Health Center in Woodland Hills, CA, referred me to an excellent radiologist for a consultation. Alternatively, he explained the benefits of robotic surgery but cautioned that the procedure required the skills of an excellent surgeon with LOTS of experience using the DaVinci robotic system. For that he referred me to Comprehensive Urology at Cedar Sinai. Dr. Robert Sanford was the first doctor I met at Comp Urology. Throughout this process I've been amazed how much time and patience each doctor has devoted to explaining the disease, my test results and treatment options. Dr. Sanford was all that and more. His relaxed, thoughtful and friendly manner immediately put me at ease as we discussed my medical history. Dr. Sanford strongly recommended the robotic surgery and by that point in my research I agreed. He then referred me to his younger colleague, Dr. Kia Michel, one of the Comp. Urology doctors who perform the robotic procedure. I met Dr. Michel later that week and again a few weeks later, just a few days before the surgery. I was impressed by his knowledge and experience (he said he's done over 1000 of these robotic procedures) but even more I was struck by the warmth of his personality, his genuine concern and unending positivity. Dr. Michel even took time to explain the procedure to my 20 year old son who joined my wife and I at the pre-op visit. Long story short, I had the surgery in early Jan. 2014. It went very well; I am 5 weeks into my recovery and feeling great. I needed a catheter for the first 2 weeks (2 weeks more than I ever want to have again!) but I've had no incontinence problems since it was removed. The 6 small incisions from the robotic surgery healed quickly and if I didn't have such a physical job I'm sure I could have returned to work after only 3 - 4 weeks. As it is, I expect to be back to work in just another couple of weeks. The staff and nurses at Cedars Sinai Medical Center deserve kudos as well. It is truly a world-class facility and I consider myself very lucky to have been under their care. Lastly, the entire staff at Comprehensive Urology have been absolutely great. They've handled scheduling, pre- and post-op procedures, and insurance and disability claims with efficiency and good humor. In conclusion, I highly recommend Dr. Kia Michel and Comprehensive Urology. Certainly, if you are lucky enough to have them in your insurance network (like the Motion Picture Industry Health Plan does) and you need urological services, they are the people to see. read more

Dr. Michel is outstanding. He's knowledgeable and thorough, but at the same time he listens and has a kind, reassuring manner, which I think is very important; nobody goes to a urologist because everything is fine. Sure, sometimes appointments can run a bit behind, but I'd rather have someone who's skilled and highly in demand who gives his patients the time they deserve. I should also add here that his staff is excellent. In my case, he laid out a variety of courses of treatment and their respective benefits/risks, and after pursuing one for a while to see if it worked out, we ended up going the surgical route. Dr. Michel was very clear that recovery would be a process--and that this was normal and not to worry--and now that we're a bit more than five months out, the surgery seems to have been very successful in fixing the issues I was having. The thing that sticks with me most is after some post-surgery testing that showed huge improvement, Dr. Michel was clearly thrilled...for me. That's the kind of doctor I want, and I'm glad that in Dr. Michel, that's the one I have. I can't recommend him more highly. read more

After meeting many, many doctors, I can readily assert that Dr. Michel is one of the top tier of practioners and persons I have met. I felt very comfortable and well treated by the entire staff. I am healing and recovering from a very distressing medical issue that left some other doctors scrambling and others not knowing what to do. Only my previous Urologist stopped the madness and put me on the correct course of action. After he transfered to Australia, finding a doctor who could understand what was going on is difficult. Not only did Dr. Michel not blink an eye he really i understands what I've been through physically and emotionally. And while helping me find other great specialists I also need, he was also able to do some preliminary testing which really helped me. What an incredible experience ! During my husband's yearly physical he discovered his PSA was elevated. We decided to seek out the best Urologist we could find in either Los Angeles or Florida. I found some very good reviews on Yelp and decided to schedule an appointment with Dr. Kia Michel at Comprehensive Urology. From the very first appointment with Dr. Michel we knew my husband was in good hands. Dr. Michel worked very quickly to discover my husband had prostate cancer. His bedside manner was incredible and he made us feel safe and informed. He gave my husband his options and we felt very confident about him performing the HIFU procedure. Today I'm happy to report that within 1 week of the surgery, which was painless , my husband is feeling 100% and is cancer free!!! We are so grateful to Dr. Michel and his compassionate and friendly staff.
