My spouse had an appointment with Dr. Houman who was filling in while the urologist who had done a procedure on her the previous week was on vacation. He was abrupt, not interested in any information about her symptoms or history and told her to just go the emergency room - which was ridiculous because she would have sat there for hours and would not have been admitted. When I asked him why he was so hostile, he apologized, clearly so he wouldn't get a bad review. I'm sorry this is a bad review -- there was no reason for his unprofessionalism. He could have said that there was nothing he could do at this time without the hostility. I think he didn't want to be bothered with another doctor's patient, particularly an older female. Dr. Houman literally transformed my life. Dr. Desai at Tower Urology removed my prostate along with all the cancer and Dr. Leach took care of the urinary issues that come along with prostate removal. As a result of humiliation, unprofessionalism, negligence, and borderline malpractice, I will not be returning to this office. It's unfortunate that Yelp reviews have a character limit because the extent of the misconduct cannot be adequately described with 5000 characters. I called the office to inquire about a vasectomy and was told that it was $400 for a consultation, $1500 for the surgery, or $1700 for both on the same day. Price aside, a same day consultation and surgery seemed odd to me so I decided to consider my options. As a physical therapist who is familiar with medical procedures, this was not something I had encountered so I called other offices and friends who had the procedure. It definitely wasn't standard. Ignoring my instinct, I called back to schedule the surgery. When I attempted to confirm the price originally quoted to me ($1700), the woman on the phone laughed at me saying, "Who told you that?" That's never been the price. The price for both is $1900." I was just repeating what I had been told less than 2 months prior. She scheduled the appointment. She asked no questions, including my past medical history or medication usage, provided little information ("don't take blood thinners" was the extent of it), and didn't email an appointment reminder. When I asked about the cost of the semen analysis after the surgery, she once again laughed and said "We can't charge you for that." Taken aback, I responded by saying, "Sorry, this is my first time having a vasectomy. How am I supposed to know that?" On the day of the surgery, there was no consultation. No one took my vitals, my past medical history, or medication usage. Instead, I was led into the room by the doctor's male assistant and asked to get naked. That's it. As he was prepping me for surgery, he placed an electrode on my right hip which is required for cauterization. When I asked him if it mattered that I have a right total hip replacement, he suggested we switch the electrode to the opposite side. When he started to a prepare a scalpel, I was confused so I asked, "Isn't this a no-scalpel surgery?" Unsurprisingly, he laughed and said they always use a scalpel. I told him that when I spoke to the woman to schedule the appointment (second phone call), I asked if it was scalpel or no-scalpel and she said it's whatever I wanted (another oddity that I shouldn't have ignored). And unsurprisingly he asked, "Who told you that? We never do no-scalpel." I asked to speak to the Dr. Houman who eventually came in to let me know that outcomes are the same and scarring is less with the scalpel. He leaves the room and the assistant finishes his prep. The assistant also leaves the room and the curtain that goes around the door for privacy is left undrawn. A woman knocks, calls out the name of the male assistant who isn't present, and enters immediately to me prepped for surgery fully exposed before I can say anything. She draws the curtain and then walks out without saying anything. Shortly thereafter, a woman knocks and calls out the name of the male assistant. This time, I SHOUT "No!". This happens at least two more times before she enters and says "I just need to grab something" and proceeds to walk into the room anyway. I imagine it was the same woman, but I was so shocked both times that I didn't process it fully. Either way, she had no role in my care or surgery. When I described the experience to my wife and others, they couldn't believe it. Imagine if an unknown man walked in on a fully exposed woman alone in a gynecology office? Eventually, Dr. Houman and his assistant returned to perform the surgery. Because of the pain I was experiencing during the surgery, I had to request additional analgesia 3-4 times. He said he just gave me a "little" the first time and upon subsequent requests. Why? During the procedure, he asked how many children I have. I responded that I have no children. Thankfully I'm aware of the risks, limitations, permanence, etc. of the surgery, but this seems like something you might ask beforehand. Perhaps during a consultation? Fast-forward a week or two. The stitches on one side broke and I developed an infection. I'm an extremely young, fit, healthy 33-year-old so I was a bit surprised. If anything, I was overly cautious after the surgery because I wanted the recovery to go well after my poor experience in the office. I informed Dr. Houman he prescribed me antibiotics. That's fine, but once again, he never asked my allergies. It healed fine. 6 weeks later, I turned in my first sample. I had no apt because I was told to bring it in whenever and there was no problem. 12 weeks later (now), I went to turn in my 2nd sample. This time I was told I needed an appointment, so they did NOT accept my sample. I also received a bill for the first analysis. Remember the lady who laughed at me on the phone for asking about the price of the analysis? I'll be getting my second sample analyzed elsewhere. read more
