Few months back I have visited Dr. Afshar because that I might have cancer, Dr. Afshar send me to MRI and confirm that I have a small cancer, so he told me about this procedure that this was the right thing to do in my case whiteout telling me some of the bad effects that may occur. I said ok. So we went on and got the procedure done and I want to see him one week later. They draw blood and he told me that he will call me in ( 7 days) to let me know if I am cleared from the cancer. At the same time I told him on other serious issues that I am having after the procedure, he said oh I don't know way but let's see first if you clear from the cancer. After 7 days I didn't hear anything from him, I waited 2 weeks it was the longest 2 weeks in my life, then I called his office the nurse took my information and checked the file she said that your results are in and he signed off on it but I don't know why he did not call, she said that he is in the other office but she will send him a message to call you. No one called so the next day I called again this time another nurse answered the phone, I told her the same thing that I been waiting for his call in past two weeks and I also called yesterday and I was told that she was going to send him a message to call me and I haven't heard anything and I am concern this is a very serious. She checked the file and gave me some numbers and said this is the result! I asked her I don't know what those numbers mean. She turned around and said ( don't worry you are not going to die) wow really! This is some of my experience with this doctor definitely not going back. read more

If you are looking for a caring, compassionate urologist for your elderly parents, please don't take them to Dr. Ali Afshar. He will give you contradicting information. When you ask for clarification, he will talk to you in a condescending way, attempting to make it look like you got everything wrong. He will dictate the most invasive procedures, (confirmed by other medical professionals), yet claim that he cares about his patients. After diagnosing the patient with cancer & suggesting regular check ups/lab work, he will recant & say "forget the cancer"! One cannot afford to forget cancer! All in all, do enough research & take your ailing, elderly parents elsewhere. read more

This "doctor" lacks the most fundamental aspect of being a physician. He lacks compassion and cared more about my economic status than my health. If you visit this doctor you are putting yourself at risk. He is incapable of connecting with human beings, their pain, and making an EFFORT to help. My condition went from a simple ER visit, to a 6 day hospital stay with surgery, during which I was totally mismanaged. Short version of the story if interested: I went in for a small abscess from an ingrown hair to be drained.... It was drained and I was sent home. 2 Hours later something from the procedure caused the infection to spread rapidly. I spent the entire night at home vomiting from pain. I returned the next day to be informed that it indeed had spread. I was declared to be septic with a bad case of "MRSA" and at extreme risk and needed surgery in the am. Well I can tell you know that I didn't have "MRSA". The next day after reviewing the ultra sound and getting the skin infection reduced, I was told once again I was fine and to go home. Again, this didn't feel right and i refused to go home and chose to remain in the hospital for monitoring. I was basically told "ok, it's up to you, but you just need to suck it up and it will go away, there is no fluid or infection". Wrong. Totally wrong. In fact i didn't have 'MRSA' I later found out he read the chart wrong and I had 'MSSA'. During that night in the hospital that I decided to stay against his advice, the infection raged. The worst imaginable pain began shooting through my body. I was incapacitated with pain. IN THE HOSPITAL. I told the nurse i needed a doctor ASAP. She called his on call resident Dr. Kramer. He refused to come see me and gave me 5mg of Percocet. To put it in perspective, that would be like throwing a cup of water on a house fire. I then demanded to see the doctor and the nurse informed me that he was avoiding her calls. After calling from 3 different numbers he finally answered. Again he refused to come and see me or even speak on the phone. He gave me a little more pain meds and told me he'd check on it in the am. That night was a living hell for me I'll never forget. The following day I was sent to emergency surgery. I could write a book (or add chapters to this book) on the true incompetence and inhumanity of this doctor. He is now at Cedar Sinai, and I am so sorry that such a reputable hospital has hired this money hungry physician. That is the only reason I can think that he became a doctor, because helping people is not even in the ballpark of his priorities. read more

A little over a year ago I was told that I had kidney cancer. A tumor the size of a lime on my left kidney. I was also told to find a surgeon. I got recommendations from my primary care and also searched online for the best in Southern California. All the surgeons I spoke with after looking at the mri's told me that because of the size and location of the tumor that I was going to need to have my kidney removed. What I consider for me, a miracle was being introduced to Dr Afshar. He looked at the mri and told me that he was going to have a 3D model made and review with some of his colleagues and get back to me. Several days later he called me in his office and told me that he thought he could save my kidney. Well, it's been a year and I am cancer free with both of my kidneys still in me. Dr. Afshar went the extra mile, working harder and saved my kidney. I have read some reviews that say he is not compassionate or has poor bedside manners, but for me, I would rather have a skilled surgeon that is able to save my kidney then someone that tells me he is "going to treat me like family" and takes the shortcut. The Tarzana office is very efficient on scheduling procedures that need to be done at the hospital . I would recommend this doctor to all . One of the worst Doctors I have seen in my career. I will preface this by saying that I was diagnosed by one of the top urologists in the country with interstitial cystitis back in 2010, however, my urologist is now in San Francisco, so I can no longer see him. I was having an active flare up, and was in debilitating pain, so I called around and was recommended to Dr. Afshar's colleague, whom was booked for two months, so the receptionist recommended I go to Dr. Afshar. I had read the reviews on him and was hesitant to go, but was in extraordinary pain and wanted to be seen by someone ASAP. Upon arrival, the front desk woman was exceptionally rude, but I was seen quickly. Krystal, Dr. Afshar's nurse, is lovely and compassionate, she is the reason for the 2 stars in itself, without her, and nurse Angela, who I met when I had to return to redo my sample (it was either lost, or there was an 'error' at the lab, and they needed me to redo it.) Dr. Afshar was 30 minutes behind our scheduled appointment time and when he entered the room, he was condescending and arrogant. Please do not confuse your one hour lecture on my condition, with my 11 years of living with it, I know when I am having a flare up, and I know that I do not have a uti nor another lingering condition. I am capable of running my own UA's and yet, he wanted me to do a culture "just in case." Of course, my UA came back negative for any culture or infection; he then began discussing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease with me (which I have absolutely zero symtoms of, nor would I meet any of the criteria for it,) however, within 15 minutes of meeting me, and knowing very little of my story, he offered that diagnosis. When I informed him who my former urologist was, as well as the diagnosis received, he was taken aback that I was "diagnosed so early with IC" and is "not sure that's what I have." Keep in mind, the doctor I went to is a top notch, well respected doctor in the industry, and I have had a procedure done by the doctor to confirm that bleeding and micro tears in my bladder. To put it simply, I have IC and I have both the procedure report, as well as the knowledge of a much more senior and knowledgeable urologist's diagnosis. Please save yourself the inconvenience and take your business elsewhere, this was a massive waste of my day and I am still in pain with absolute no help given to me by this clinic. I think it is also important to note, they do ask whether or not you are vaccinated, (which, as a health care worker, I am,) and they make a copy of your vaccine card. I thought this was strange, as I've never heard a provider ask that, let alone make a copy of my vaccine card. In all honesty though, this was the least irritating thing of the experience. I'd gladly show my card again if it meant I would receive more compassionate care. read more

Inconsiderate....full of himself.....and INCORRECTLY RECOMMENDED SURGERY FOR ME!!!!! REALLY SCARY!! Here is what happened...... I went to the ER at Tarzana Hospital ( which is now a part of Cedars Sinai ). I mention this because I thought that my own Urologist would now be able to see me there....not the case at this time. I had been treated for a UTI but developed a fever and pain....hence my visit to the ER. The ER doctor (who was terrific! ) determined I had a blockage and needed to be admitted and have surgery that same day. Since my own urologist could not be there, they assigned this doctor to perform my surgery. The nurse was going over my chart and wanted me to sign the consent for surgery. She casually said "Oh I see Dr. Afshar has been to see you to explain everything". I told her he had not. She looked confused and continued to read my chart. She told me she saw all of his notes in my chart and then she said...."oh, I see, he wrote notes but did not say he actually saw you". The nurse asked if I wanted to see him before surgery and of course, I did. A few minutes later, Dr. Afshar almost flew into my room ( surgery was scheduled in about 1/2 hour ), and he said to me (get ready....) " I understand you are refusing to sign the consent form". Knowing that this man was going to be operating on me, I just explained that I did not refuse to sign it, I just wanted to meet him and have him tell me what he was going to do to me during surgery. He explained and I signed....no problem. AFTER surgery, he came to my room to explain that I would need to schedule an appt with him and he would need to perform surgery on me in the next few weeks. He said that I was born with an irregularity and he would need to correct it. Mind you, I am 60 years old and have never had this problem before. He said he would perform it robotically and stated "I am the robotic guy in the practice." I had no intentions of ever going to this doctor! After I went home, I contacted my own Urologist and he took over. He looked at my records and said he was really doubtful that I would need surgery ( and he explained why ), but wanted to perform a couple of tests and certainly did not want to rush into a surgery. He performed a procedure and placed a temporary stent that I removed just days later.He recommended I wait and let myself heal completely and then do an ultrasound. I have had NO problems and my ultrasound came back normal......NO SURGERY NEEDED!! I would never recommend this doctor to anyone for anything!!! read more

Dr. Ali Afshar, is an excellent, very professional urologist and I rate him with ""A plus"" without any hesitation. Dr. Ali Afshar who is my urologist for few years clearly/simply explains the treatments, he sees the big picture and addresses all of my concerns and questions. He always had a plan B (e.g., address the side effects of medications or medication out of stock) and knowledge and control gives a piece of mind to any patient including me. The whole crew, appointment scheduling, front end and back end support, nurses, billing, are very responsive and office management for both Tarzana and West Hills are excellent. All said, I have nothing but, good to say about Dr. Ali Afshar and for sure I do rate him ""A PLUS and Excellent"".
