I have trained in over 8 different gyms around the world (US, Canada, Brazil) and I have to say…read morethat Lin MMA is probably in my top 2. Probably top BJJ school on my list but not top MMA school. In my opinion, the BJJ here is top notch and the instructors are fantastic. They have a game plan scheduled out for the entire year and the drills and techniques are done so that you can learn and get a great understanding and grasp of the moves. Professor Lin is a black belt BJJ artist who is easy to get along with and holds the respect of the entire class. The instructors are top notch and champions. The decor of the gym is more BJJ oriented. There are 3 big areas for classes along with heavy bags along the edges for the Muay Thai/Kick Boxing classes. There is also a small gym with free weights. Everybody who trains here are extremely respectful of you and if you are a beginner, you won't get thrown to the wolves like some of the other gyms that I've trained at. As a beginner, you will get brought along slowly until you have enough understanding to defend yourself against more advanced guys. There are beginner and more advanced classes. The new guys to this sport will be placed in the beginner classes before graduating to the more advanced classes. They are open on Saturdays which is a great thing because I like to train as often as possible. If you do end up getting hurt, there is an incident report that they file for their records. I ended up tearing the meniscus in my right knee while rolling so that pretty much ended my training here because I was sent back to Brazil for work so am training in Brazil now. Price-wise, this is a little more expensive than what I usually pay (compared to US prices because in Brazil, I pay pretty much next to nothing). I was only signed up for 3 months because I was on vacation during this time and wanted to continue training but as a monthly fee, it was a little pricier than what I had wanted to pay. However, I definitely have to say that I got more out of training here than I ended up paying for so that is a plus! Now, I have trained at Rev MMA and I have to say that the BJJ at Lin MMA is significantly better. The guys at Rev are less respectful of you and will go all out on rookies. Also, Lin MMA is cheaper!! Rev MMA is associated with Carlos Newton which is probably why they say they can jack up the prices. I have only trained at these two gyms in Toronto but can say that Lin MMA is probably the best in Toronto. Thank you Professor Lin and all of the coaches. If I am ever back in town for an extended period, I will be coming back to continue training after my knee heals up.

As a parent I sat and watched the class in the nice open dojo (not like some of the other dojos we visited where parents are kept behind glass, or worse - not allowed to watch at all!) and was really impressed with the varied, challenging, and fun exercises he was doing. The children's instructors at this dojo are really quite genius at getting the kids involved, keeping them engaged, and teaching respect and discipline. After a year we noticed a big difference in my son - he was more focused at home and at school (yes, even at only six years of age!) and he was always ready to go to karate. After watching on the sidelines for a couple years I finally decided it was time to join the dojo myself. I can tell you that this is not a McDojo. The head instructor, Sensei Tetsuji Nakamura, is the chief instructor of the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karatedo Federation (I.O.G.K.F.) and holds a seventh degree black belt. Other instructors are similarly highly ranked and they have truly earned their positions. This is a place where you work hard to move up the ranks... don't expect a black belt in one year! However, it is also a friendly and welcoming place where there is a real sense of community. I have been a student at Shudokan for six years now and have loved every minute of it!
