When it debuted, this swinging coaster was called Top Gun, after the Tom Cruise movie of the same name. The station was heavily themed to look like an aircraft carrier (fun fact: Kings Island enlisted the production designer from the actual film--John DeCuir--to create the station and queue area for this ride). You'd be able to hear Kenny Loggins 'Danger Zone', 'Mighty Wings' from Cheap Trick, or the signature riffs from the iconic theme song by Harold Faltermeyer & Steve Stevens........until 2008. When Paramount gave way to Cedar Fair, all Top Gun-related crap went straight out the F-18 window and the ride was re-named "Flight Deck", retaining the concept of taking off from a military aircraft carrier but dropping the copyrighted stuff (including the killer soundtrack played in the queue line). This name stuck for 6 seasons until Kings Island decided to re-theme the coaster once again, this time as a throwback/homage to a suspended prototype coaster that existed back in the 80's, also called The Bat. {{ end lesson }} The ride experience itself is pretty enjoyable. The Bat remains 1 of 5 coasters on the planet where the carriage hangs freely below the track, which allows the cars to swing up to 90° in either direction as they navigate turns. It's got some decent speed (51mph), and the spaghetti-like twists of orange track and dark grey supports makes for a striking visual. Not overly extreme, but definitely not tame. Of course it all depends on where you sit.....to me, it felt like the front row gave more laterals (side to side G-forces) and an overall better ride. However, The Bat's biggest drawback is the absolutely insane amount of walking it takes to get from the ride's entrance to the station platform. No repetitive back-and-forth queues here, just a single never-ending line that stretches deep into a sequestered corner of Kings Island. When crowds are light, it could easily take you 7+ minutes of continuous walking thru the forest terrain before you reach the station. Exercise sucks. While similar to Vortex at sister Cedar Fair park Canada's Wonderland, The Bat offers slightly milder thrills, a shorter drop and lesser top speed. It's still a fun coaster credit, although the ride's general atmosphere has been greatly hampered ever since the Top Gun theme crashed and burned (pun fully intended). And that overly-lengthy queue is about the most inconvenient thing ever, no joke. § front row or back row § : front row is the way to go on this one!

One complaint: The number of people who sit on a weight lifting machine and read their phones for 5-10 minutes while you're waiting to use it. We learned all the safety and got strapped up with equipment. Very beginner friendly. But it's scary. There's a variety of courses, a couple beginner ones. They are very tall. The straps feel safe as well, for a split second as you're climbing, the slack needs to catch up, so you feel like nothing is holding you up. Phew. Don't look down lol but the decent from any point is safe with the cables. Trusting them is half the battle but once you're at the top you don't have much choice, that didn't stop me from pulling on the harness after every step lol. Multiple courses, one room with the harness and one without for free climbing, even though the free climbing is only like 10 ft tall (also I think it's called bouldering) it was still fun to try to strategically climb them without cheating. The climb to the top was rewarding on the big harness climbs. Your forearms will be worn out tho! Shout out the staff for being friendly and supportive.

My experience of this park keeps on getting better and we ended up this time going on the busiest days like Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I went one day on a Thursday, but that is when we landed. We usually tend to get here an hour and 15 minutes early as they open the gates right at 9:00am. I recommend going to the not self serve parking as for some reason my phone did not scan to open the gate and it is easier for the person to scan the phone. If you are having trouble someone will come and scan for you. For Gold and Prestige members we got to into the park 30 minutes early and they opened up Diamondback, the updated Phantom Theatre and Great Pumpkin Coaster. If you have a regular ticket, you can explore the shops or wait at your favorite ride. I like the Peanuts characters are in one showplace too so you can go visit them. Here are the places I ate at as I have the meal pass: 1. Sports Bar - sit down place, food takes awhile to get, but you are relaxing at a table, while they come and give you your food. This place gets crowded 2. Mexican Place - not too bad, guacamole is extra however 3. Paris French - had the shrimp sandwich, but the chips were salty, bread has on the hard side 4. BBQ - I did not try it, but the meat looked really dry 5. Tom Chee - this place is good, but only if you like greasy sandwiches. Very filling for sure I recommend getting the blue ice cream and the red soda only available on selection locations. I tend to have at least one cup and ice cream per visit I did not buy too much merchandise this time around, but I like the Snoopy Store to visit. Shows For some reason, they do not do any Peanuts shows anymore. We watched Brad Ross, illusionist and he was fun to watch and a 50 minute show. We watched his show 4 times, but sometimes it was a way to escape the heat and take a nap and figure out how he did some of the tricks. Seating is comfortable. They do have live entertainment like dancers or singers in some areas. They do have the wine festival, but we did not buy a card since we have a meal plan. Rides (I rode the following) and here are my thoughts this time around as they might be different since the last review 1. Banshee - gotton rougher over the years and the vest restraints got tighter on me 2. Drop Zone - this ride worked on the last 2 days, show operations, but recommend to ride once 3. Congo Falls - sometimes this operates on certain days, but fun to get soaked 4. Bat - an okay ride, only ride it if the line is short 5. White Water Canyon - you will get soaked by the geyers, this ride opens from 12 to 9pm 6. Charlie Brown Rushing River - Fun log ride, line moves slow, I wish they would open both lanes. 7. Snoopy Soap Box Racers - fun kids ride 8. Woodstock Twirly Birds Ride - I always have fun being in the helicopter, ride is too short though 9. Mystic Timbers - fun wooden ride, lines are not long on this one 10. Diamondback - this line tends to get long for some reason and can be longer than Orion 11. the Beast - we like doing a day time ride which line is very short and night time ride line gets long. They do shut the ride down at 9:30pm for the fireworks show and reopen at 10:20pm. My wife and I sometimes do not get out of the park until 11:30pm. Night ride is definitely worth it. The ride has definitely gotton smoother 12. Orion - definitely one of my favorite rides - I wish they had more shade on the line queue, but lines do move quickly 13. Red Racer/Blue Racer - I prefer the red racer more smoother compared to the blue 14. Windseeker - slow operations on this one, but the line is not long, but a great view of the park 15. Adventure Express - pretty neat ride for visual, but rough riding it 16. Woodstock Air Flyers - this ride tends to get longer, but I find it a little on a shaky side 17. Antique Cars - we like going on this ride. Line might look long, but it ends up being around 20 minutes Rides I did not go on this trip but wanted to Flight of Fear - some reason this line got the longest and I do not know why, but definitely not worth waiting for 40 minutes. I think I rode this ride a bunch when it was raining and all of the other rides were closed. Overall a great time and have a fun time at this park.

The Queen City Express Coaster was the right amount of thrill for me, and my kids thought just about everything was great. Admission was pretty reasonable, and with the wristbands, so is food -- we got two of them to feed our family of five, essentially snacking every 90 min. Highly recommend that strategy. That said, parts of Kings Island are a bit run down, including the parking lot and some of the rides, like the Woodstock Express. Also, the loading process for several rides seemed to be a bit slow and inefficient. Not sure why. In sum, I liked the visit. But didn't love it.

Unlike other jump parks, there were areas or stations without employees, so no enforcement of order. Kids were climbing a wall, then dropping into a foam pit -- right on top of kids already down in the foam. There were toddlers and pre-teens alike running across trampolines where someone was already jumping. At just about any given moment, I could see a collision, fall or close calls somewhere. "This is law-less," one adult said. A boy ran across my trampoline, crashed into me and took me out. Then when I was down, his knee hit me directly in the head. I got off the trampoline and started to walk away, before I got dizzy and laid down flat on the floor. Not one employee came over. I now have 2 seriously welts on my head and am lucky that I don't think I had a concussion. We won't be back.

Shuttle is super clean, on time, great perk for visiting Kings Island. Overall, we booked for certain advertised perks that we didn't get so we would not return at $150 a night.
