This was the perfect place for me to find fun and unique gifts for my niece and nephew. What a huge collection of toys, accessories, and miscellaneous items for kids of all ages! There's lots of room to peruse, and they have a little bit of everything: board games, puzzles, tea sets, science kits, backpacks, stuffed animals, even unicorn pogo sticks. The staff is friendly and won't rush you at all, giving you space unless you want any recommendations. They also do complimentary gift wrapping with an assortment of beautiful ribbons (although the red one apparently bleeds a little, so watch out), and you can get a customer card, one point per dollar, with rewards every 500 points. read more

The difference between every other toy store and Kidding Around is how well curated Kidding Around is. It feels like they understand what kids want better than kids do. In 15 years of buying presents for nieces and nephews and now my own children, I've never whiffed with something from Kidding Around. E.g., The Pablo The Pug doll is made by Jellycat. My son has a bunch of stuffed animal. There's something about the texture of Pablo that makes him play with him more than any of his other animal friends. read more

I have lived in the neighborhood for over 25 years and have always loved this store. However, a few months ago I went in there to get a few gifts for my niece's son (18 month old- they live in England), I found some great toys including a set of stackable shapes. When we opened the stackables it turned out that one of the shapes was duplicated and so one was missing. When i got back to NYC I called the store and without hesitation they said they would fix the issue and send the part to England. They did so very quickly and it must have cost them more than the toy itself. Perfect customer service! Love them even more. read more

Visited this toy store after paying homage to Carrie Bradshaw's Apartment nearby. I stopped in with a couple friends and our kids, and we thoroughly enjoyed browsing this shop. They offer a selection of well-curated toys and books that you're bound to find something appealing that you haven't seen elsewhere. Some of the toys available reminded me of the Lovevery packages he gets, which are his favorite toys. We picked up a dozen books, finger puppets, and a few toys to keep these infants/toddlers busy. Big boys like toys too, and I couldn't resist picking up some of the tiny plastic smurf figures that I saw in the window as I walked by on my lunch time exploration. ($5 ea.) The clerk was very friendly and helpful, and there are a LOT of educational toys here too. Some of them have an ecological theme to them. Others are NYC centered, like the toy sanitation truck or the Staten Island ferry boat. This is an absolutely wonderful toy store. But it's no Kay-Bee or Toys R Us. These are upper-scale toys. Wooden toys. Puzzles and games. Electronics kits. Papo animal and soldier figures. Kidding Around is a terrific toy store. It is one of the few toy stores in NYC with a large selection of Haba toys - Haba is a German toy maker that makes gorgeous, colorful, tons-of-play-value wooden and plush toys. Kidding Around also has lots of kid-pleasing toys. I'm talking about a $20 jewelry box project that included 500 little pink jelly stickers that must be stuck on the box according to a special number code. Pink jelly stickers aren't my personal style, but the project made my five-year-old-niece's eyes light up. The store has a tiny footprint, and is stocked to the rafters, and the staff members look more like owners rather than like minimum-wage employees. Great neighborhood store. Minus one star for the prices, which are a little more than you'd pay online, and for the loyalty program, which requires a lot of loyalty to earn any rewards. read more

Great selection and array of unusual and exciting toys and gifts for kids. If you know what you're looking for and don't need any help, this place is for you. However the big miss for me in my visit was the lack of help or attention from the staff. I walked in and was never greeted or asked if I needed help or spoken to whatsoever. I was in the store wandering the aisles looking for 3 gifts for about 15 minute (I was looking to spend approx $75 on 3 separate kids)s and was never helped or even noticed, really. The 3 staff members in the store spent the entire time talking amongst themselves about their social lives at the cash, while I wandered around unsure what to buy that could be packed in a carry on and brought to cousins of varying ages. In the end I walked out and will instead return to my favourite children's store Piccolini in Nolita because I can walk in there, tell them I need a "small, packable gift around $25 for a 2 year old boy" and I leave 5 minutes later satisfied with a unique and personalized gift, gift wrapped beautifully. read more

I come whenever I need to get a present for someone young among friends or family. Not only I enjoy so much browsing the store, I always could find that perfect and unique gift that brings so much smile on the recipient's face. Why bother going to chain stores when you can get all sorts of "alternative" (I don't think it's the right word, but I'm using it anyway) toys here? Most of their toys are unique, safe, educational and NOT boring! Screw those mainstream toys that you can find anywhere if you want to give a kid something really special. This place is great! A staff that is willing to help you and a great selection of toys. I wouldn't really say that it was mostly specialty toys because they had a lot of brand named items. (Playmobil, Hello Kitty, ALEX, etc.) Costumes, musical instruments, and great clothing as well. My personal favorite was the masterpiece artist temporary tattoos (Kahlo, Michelangelo, Rivera, Monet) and the Book of Immaturity, very cool. Lots of puzzles and cars, trains and planes. If you bring a child in here, you'll probably never leave. read more

This is a great toy store with a fantastic array of dolls, games, DIY kits, and structures for kids of all different ages. It's well organized, laid out by age and type of game. The sales people were wandering the store, able to help me find exactly the toys I was looking for. They offer a rewards program, unfortunately I can't explain the specifics, I didn't entirely pay attention, but make sure to ask about it at the register. They also do gift wrapping. For a store that was extremely busy on a Monday night before Christmas, Kidding Around was well-stocked, nicely organized, and people were around to help anyone who needed it. I visited the store for the first time yesterday and immediately fell in love with the wide variety of options and range in pricing! When I shop for a child, I always consider gender, age, budget, size/weight of gift (if it needs to be shipped), and most importantly, the uniqueness of each gift. I want the item to be unique, not something sold at every major retailer or online so that the child would cherish the gift and not receive something that they may already own or be gifted by someone else. This store sold just that including french toys and tea sets I couldn't find on Amazon. The assortment varied including but not limited to puzzles, games, plush dolls, arts & crafts, toys - for both boys and girls of all ages newborn and up with prices ranging from $5+ The staff is efficient and helpful to make suggestions. The store layout is confusing but I think it is loosely organized by age. They also provide gift receipts and offer complimentary gift wrapping with gorgeous ribbon. Given the many factors one may consider when purchasing a gift for a child, this store definitely has something for everyone! read more

Excellent selection of toys for children under 16. (Actually, there's a settlers of Catan set, along with some expansion sets, that would be suitable for adults as well). There's a fantastic variety of educational games for different ages (math, verbal, science), arts and crafts, Lego additions and general hands-on toys. In this current age of technology over abundance, it is so much better to get fun educational games for small children than let them be distracted by an iPad. The people who work here are helpful and friendly, but be aware that it would be impossible for them to have intimate experience with ALL the games. My Hong Kong cousins (6, 6 and 13) respectively loved the things I got them (Zingo - English word bingo -, mighty minds - geometric shapes for spatial intelligence - and a watercolor pencil set with books). During the holiday season, they even do gift wrap, which is fantastic. I love this place and I would definitely come back for more gifts for other children. read more

Growing up in a world where there used to be toy stores in abundance, including Toys R Us, this store is refreshing and important to have today. Walking down the aisles brings me back to when I was little with my family and I got to pick out a toy - there are so many varieties and a huge selection of quality toys for kids. They also are the only store in the area that I have found that hosts a huge selection of Jellycat stuffed animals, including large and huge ones - besides Nordstrom - but if I can support small businesses, I'd rather do that. I corresponded with Kasey on their selection before arriving to the store and she was prompt and informative, allowing me to make my selection when I arrived at the store. It made my experience so much more personal and I shall certainly be returning in-person for gifts or utilizing their online website. Incredible old fashioned toy store. Wasn't anyway what I expected. I was thinking it was like most stores, with all those eletronic toys and everything and was really surprised to find that I was wrong. Not that it doesn't have newer stuff but they have a lot of old school toys that made me feel like a kid again. I was looking for a unique toy store to get something special for my daughter's first birthday. I have to say I was impressed with the selection they had. It wasn't the typical type of toys that you find in the big name stores. I was so excited to come across Raggedy Ann and Andy, which I never see anywhere else.
