I found out from my current physical therapists that mobility has to come before anything else. They were having me do leg presses before I could even bend it to 100 degrees. They cost me a lot of money and time. I am now having to spend even more money and time to get the proper care that I should have gotten at Athletico. I'm just hoping it's not too late for me to get full mobility. If you are thinking of going here after a knee replacement, please think twice. It's unfortunate because the people are nice, but I think for a company like this it is more about the money than the quality of care.

After sustaining a shoulder/back injury, I was recommended to Athletico by a fellow fitness…read moreenthusiast because they offer a service called "dry needling" for trigger point therapy. Being a fairly good navigator of the internet and feeling like I could self-treat myself, I was not sure how much good seeing a PT could do for me. Not to mention while the idea of dry needling peaked my curiosity, I was slightly skeptical about it's effectiveness in treating my condition. But, despite my reluctance, I made the appointment to see one of their PTs. It was very easy to schedule an appointment for the following week. They were accommodating and had a decent amount of time slots available. Catherine, their receptionist, is very pleasant to speak to and eager to assist patients. Their office is easy to find. It's not particularly convenient or out-of-the-way for me, but works based on it's proximity to being in the middle of my drive to the office from my home. The space is very clean and tidy, and has the typical assortment of physical therapy equipment (including a pilates reformer machine.) In addition to the receptionist, there is usually 1-2 PTs on staff plus an assistant. Most likely it depends on how many patients are schedule on a particular day/time as to how many PTs will be present. I was seeing Ana for my particular condition. She has a very good bed-side manner and seems knowledgeable enough. She gave me several exercises to work on at home and explained what muscle groups they were targeting. On my second visit, I needed clarification from her about proper form with each exercise. She was good at explaining that to me as well. For my particular issue, we had to do some spinal and rib manipulation, she was firm but gentle when adjusting me. It didn't always make me feel 100% better, but would certainly alleviate some of my discomfort. I found it frustrating on a couple visits when she had other patients schedule back-to-back with me because our session would be interrupted here and there as she had to answer their questions. But, overall the care she provided to me was pretty decent. We did try the dry needling treatment. I can't say if I am a fan or not. It's not acupuncture (though they do use the same type of needles as acupuncturists) in that it targets specific trigger points rather than putting multiple needles in like a grid. She was gentle with that procedure and made sure I was "doing okay" throughout the whole process. The needle going in the skin was not painful at all. But, when the trigger point was prodded in and out, I felt some discomfort. You will feel a little bruised and sore afterward. I didn't have any negative affects though. I also am not sure if it truly did anything (other than to slightly re-aggravate the issue), but I am not a trained PT so I can't say. My issue isn't completely resolved yet and I have two more visits before my initial "30 days with no prescription" period is up. But, I am mostly happy with the treatment they have given me and would recommend them to anyone in need of a PT in the Geist area. They cater to all ages and fitness levels (I saw old, young, strong, and weak people in the place.) The other nice part about Athletico is that they have multiple locations around Indy.

When I came into FYZICAL for my first visit, Eileen was working with a patient. They patient told me Eileen was the best and I was in good hands. When I finally got to talk to Eileen one on one, I was impressed about how much she listened to me while showing empathy. It was a breath of fresh air. My spine had shifted left and because of the trauma from the strain. Eileen worked hard with me to get me back to work. I was impressed with Eileen and her staff. I was set to start work conditioning, but I was sent to another physical therapy office by my worker's comp rep through no fault of Eileen or her staff. When I started at the new facility, I was shocked at how I received a list of exercises to work on by myself. No one watching over me or working with me. By the time I finished all of my sessions, I was experiencing intense muscle spasms. After the doctor ordered my physical therapy, I spoke with my rep to explain all that had happened. After asking to go back to Eileen, I found out I had strained my back again. She got me healed once again and I was allowed to do work conditioning at FYZICAL. Working with Eileen, who never had me work solo, unlike the previous office. From her constant coaching on how to lift properly, I learned what I was doing wrong to cause the strains. I have not had any back injuries since then because Eileen has shown me how to avoid said injuries. I highly recommend FYZICAL!! I am thankful because I am doing so much better thanks to Eileen and her staff!!

I continue to be at home healing and building strength, though I'm largely moving toward becoming more independent and hopefully returning to work in the not so distant future. One aspect of life that will need to change is the need for a different wheelchair given my change in physical status. Thus, because I have commercial insurance quite a bit of red tape is required. This includes both a tech evaluation and a full mobility evaluation by a physical therapist. At the recommendation of my DME vendor, I scheduled an appointment with Community Health Network's Physical Therapy & Rehab - Neuro Specialty precisely because they were both close and could get me in fairly quickly. They are located in the Community Health Pavilion at Fort Ben and are almost directly across from both Fort Ben and Culver's. They stumbled into a bit of a mess today and handled it quite nicely. I received a call from the DME vendor about an hour before my appointment stating that it would need to be canceled and rescheduled for 1/30/20. Since this is such an important part of me getting back to work, the prospect of a two-week delay had me pretty agitated. I started making some calls and decided to show up for my appointment that had been canceled. I wasn't in a good mood when I arrived, but I was also determined to either get it all straightened out and maintain the appointment or get an appointment sooner than 1/30. The pavilion is wheelchair friendly - they have multiple accessible parking spots and a front-entrance canopy for safe drop-off. Both glass doorways at the entry have push-button power access. This particular office is directly on the right when you enter. The person working the desk appeared to have stepped away. The operator greeted me briefly, though seemed a bit confused as I was not in their system for having an appointment. I explained the situation. I knew that the DME vendor rep had an appointment at the same office immediately prior to mine. I'd hoped I'd caught him prior to my appointment but would learn he'd left. I was impressed with the front office staff here. I was frustrated, but they kept an even tone about themselves and simply did what they were able to do. They were firm about not being able to have an appointment without the referral, but also shifted focus when it became clear I was determined to get them the referral and maintain the appointment. After multiple phone calls, I had all the pieces in place and the DME vendor agreed to return. The evaluation occurred as scheduled - Cara, the physical therapist, was a delight. She was personable, thorough, professional, and remarkably upbeat. She switched gears and I appreciated her willingness to go through with it. I loved her philosophies - she even gave me an explanation of using the phrase "differently abled" that I really respected. She set a great tone and did a great job. She assured me that given the time sensitivity she would get the evaluation done as quickly as possible but with all the needed information. This could have been a difficult experience, but with a top notch front office staff and a wonderful therapist, this ended up being a really positive experience. Cara also gave me a flyer for an amputee support group - and was also mentoring a student. I really was impressed and would easily return.

Knowing I would have to go through another recovery process where I would be missing out on moments of my college experience was tough. With this injury, I was able to put pressure on my leg much quicker than my previous injury, meaning I was more nervous to walk than the first time where I was non weight-bearing for six weeks. When I arrived at Athletico for my first appointment, however, I knew I was in good hands. I worked with Ashley throughout my recovery process and couldn't be more thankful for her guidance in the recovery process. She was always very kind, responded well to my feedback towards exercises, and progressed me at a pace that allowed me to recover as fast as I did. Although I did not work with Dan and Jenna as much, I can confidently say that they would have done the same for me. The PT team at Athletico is one of the kindest bunches who cultivate a positive work environment. I could not only sense this from the constant jokes and encouragement, but also from the aids who work alongside the PTs matching their energy and guidance. The scheduling process with Athletico is extremely simple and I found myself being able to schedule myself at convenient times for 6-8 sessions at a time. Because of this, I was able to work Athletico into my weekly routine, leaving it closer to the front of my mind on days where I had appointments. Having this availability led to consistency, which gave me more confidence in my recovery going forward. The quality of exercises and programs that Athletico offers is extremely valuable as well. Each take-home exercise has a well-thought description to match the picture shown. There are also video representations of these exercises through Athletico's health portal for you to be able to see an example of a certain workout. In less than two months out from surgery, I was not only able to travel to Eugene, OR for my internship with USA Track & Field, but also hike up to the highest point of Spencer Butte Park. Athletico's take-home program prepared me with exercises and stretches to properly take care of myself before and after the hike. Without their guidance and care during the first few months of my recovery process, this hike with my friends in Eugene would not have been possible. In conclusion, I could not be more thankful for Athletico and their staff for helping me feel confident on my feet once again. The PT experience at Athletico is exceptional and I would recommend them to anyone recovering from an injury!
