For years, I have been driving along Water Street whenever I'm in Newmarket. I enjoy the scenic…read moredetour. It allows me to travel between Yonge and Leslie Streets using a smaller set of streets. I have passed by Fairy Lake Park countless times. Yesterday, I finally paid it a visit. This park is steps away from Newmarket's Main Street South. It's where all the cool, small shops and eateries are. I was at this park to partake in the Newmarket Craft Beer Festival. What stands out during this time of year is the park's fountain. It can be clearly seen from Water Street. It's enjoyable to look at, even on a gloomy day. At first, it looked like parking would be crazy. However, when I turned onto a side road that gets you to parking at this park, it was great. There are roughly three parking lots going down this road. All are free. I decided to park on the side road where there are designated spots. It was humid and rainy. That combination is horrible to visit a beer festival. However, I survived with an umbrella, some grub, and, of course, beer. There are portable washrooms at this park. It was a nice touch. I saw geese enjoying the rain and one another's company. There is plenty of geese poop around, so look down when you walk. I liked the various signs scattered in this park. I love self-discovery tours and I got a decent one yesterday. I learned that this park is also known as the Wesley Brooks Memorial Conservation Area. Its namesake was born in Mount Albert and moved to Newmarket after serving in World War II. He served as Clerk-Treasurer of Newmarket and continued serving the town for nearly two decades. Fairy Lake is a man-made lake. It's maintained by a dam on the East Holland River. The lake was originally a millpond, but it's now a recreational area. The dam has been at the lake since 1801. This park is open year-round. Parking and admission to this park are free. I can see some paths being off-limits during the wintertime, though. It was pretty muddy when I walked on the grassy parts. I appreciated the gazebos and covered pavilions yesterday. They kept everyone dry from the rain and much happier! There is a playground at this park. Naturally, no one was using it while it was raining. I hope to return and enjoy walking through this park when it's dry and sunny. There's an ice cream store on Main Street South that I'd love to drop by. I can see myself spending some time indulging in frozen desserts at this park. (210)

As to why it is called "Red Park", the only thing I can think of is that they hold the annual Strawberry Festival there, during the Canada Day long weekend. I was at that festival in 2022. The neighbouring streets were closed each time I've been there, but I've only been there twice, so don't take my work for it. There is no free WiFi. It is not wheelchair accessible. Even then, you have to pay at least an hour parking fee to park there; which I believe maybe 1/2 hour would be enough for a small park. There is a paved walkway along the waterfront and you can enjoy the nice scenery during your walks. You also can use the designated area to load your canoe, or you can go to the canoe club and rent one. The washrooms are now closed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The water park is really lackluster, no one uses it. The gazebo is regularly occupied in the morning by Asian grannies doing tai chi. A sight to behold. The south has a baseball field, a larger playground, a skatepark, a basketball court, two more tennis courts, and another soccer field. This half is often bustling with activity, especially in the summer. The place looks right proper and is well-maintained by the staff. The pond is a nice touch that is surrounded by the verdant fields. If you haven't come to this place for a little walk, give it a try. Just look out for the geese.

Instead, I drop by a rather quaint area that I need to revisit at a more leisurely pace. Newmarket Riverwalk Commons is the space outside the Newmarket Community Centre & Lions Hall. The area has an outdoor stage. I can see it being the perfect place for Canada Day celebrations and live music when the weather is warm. There was was looked like a wading pool. I'm sure that it'll be a hit when it opens for summertime fun for kids. In the wintertime, this same area becomes a skating rink. I like how cool the space has been carefully curated. It's always being used. You don't have a wading pool that sits idle for more than half the year like you'd expect at a park with one. I am guessing that most events in Newmarket happen here. It's picturesque and beautiful with a good number of parking spots. When I'm not here on a mission to park and grab a bite to eat, I'll check out the area more closely. Alongside the kids swimming area, marked with buoys, there is a boat launch used by kayakers and made it fun to watch as you laze around the waterfront. The parking lot is right there, in direct view of the beach which is outstanding. A treed field adjoins the parking lot so nature is right there to greet you as you step out of your vehicle and take in the greenery. There is even a small picnic area that can accommodate the party grillers in the crowd, the ones that make everyone jealous with their delicious smelling griddles. As if that weren't enough to make this spot super family friendly, there is a young kids play structure directly behind the beach to top it off. There are some stones mixed in with the sand here, and some can't handle that so if it bothers you, then bring crocks or something to wear into the water. The swimming was good here with clean water and just a few waves that day from power boats going by. The bathroom is located further away near the park entrance, and the mens side at least was filthy and stank. You should avoid going in unless you have to. The view is nice looking at the north side of Barrie, with a side view of the end of Kempenfelt Bay, the harbour front downtown area with all the action happening. Nice view!
