Did a bit of a sightseeing drive that day and decided to stop by this Church. We've been in the…read morearea a few times before, but never visited this place. It's beautifully located at the Loch, right beside the A85. It was a busy day, but we managed to get a parking spot right by the church. There's street parking as well, but with the traffic going on it's good to have a chance to park on the offical (small) lot. It was built in 1881-6; and substantially extended from 1906 to 1914. Designed by the architect Walter Douglas Campbell. There are three chapels inside. One for me was especially interesting: The Bruce Chapel contains a carved wood and alabaster effigy of Robert the Bruce. We did spend more time than we've actually planned. It was just a very stunning place to take in. The architecture with all its detail, the couryard, the park, the views. It's a really amazing and impressive church. Even though well visited, I was still baffled that it isn't even more famous. Not that I did mind...overflowing with visitors it might be less impressive. But I just mean it does deserve a bit more spotlight. Donations are welcome, since there's no entrance fee. Dogs on leash are welcome outside on the grounds. There's also a little Café right next to - with toilets. Surely a beautiful place to visit when in the area.

Our tour group had a blast here, listening to traditional Scottish music and learning some dances…read more Mostly tourists here, but there were a few locals dancing and putting us to shame. Great selection of beers, ciders, and whiskeys at the bar, and wonderful music. The dance instruction was great. Scottish pride is a huge thing, and these folks showed it.

I've done bourbon distillery tours before and figured this will be the same. Similar, not the…read moresame. Marty was our guide. An awesome young man full of knowledge. He explained in detail the scotch making process. Along with a great history of the distillery. Book this in advance! It will always be sold out if you try to walk in and get tickets. The samples were nice of course. Just wish they were about ten times bigger. Ha!

This was a delightful and scenic 1 hour cruise on Loch Lomond which is a quite large loch near the…read morecity of Glasgow. In fact it is Great Britain's largest loch in terms of surface area. The waters were very smooth. Along the way, the cruise captain also played and sang the famous song that honors Scotland and this loch - "The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond" They have a small bar on board and we were treated to a nice hot chocolate. It was a bit misty and foggy, but still perfectly scenic and well, it is October in Scotland.

Fantastic, ancient castle ruins that are a short, lovely walk from the seaside village of Oban…read more Well worth a visit when you're in the area! So much history here in these castle ruins and all around the grounds - they really work hard to make your visit a very magical experience! These lands are shown to have been inhabited for at least the past 8000 years - but the chiefs of Clan MacDougall have lived here consistently for the past 900 years! They offer free guided tours twice a day Monday through Friday and it's well worth it! Our guide was Jaime and he was so wonderful!! Energetic and so passionate about the history and stories of the castle and grounds!! Really brought it to life. When you enter the grounds, first you pass by a lovely little sheep farm and then up the hill to the castle ruins. The ruins are small but absolutely whimsical and beautiful- with sweeping views of Oban Bay, the Isle of Kerrera, and even Isle of Mull off in the distance! There are QR codes scattered about that take you to webpages describing mythical Scottish creatures thought to inhabit the lands! The ruins are even supposedly haunted by a mischievous brownie sprite and a ghostly Highland piper! After visiting the ruins I highly recommend exploring their museum onsite as well - there are so many fascinating artifacts and information signs - they even had a lovely exhibit about a local photographer from the Clan MacDougall - her work was awesome and very underrated for the time. I spent much longer here than I expected- there's so much to see! The castle ruins require climbing a pretty steep hill and there are some optional stairs once inside the castle ruins so that part I wouldn't consider handicap accessible - but I think the cafe and lower parts of the museum would be. There's also a house on the grounds that was added in the mid 1700s that the current clan chief still lives in today! It's not open to visitors but they're working on changing that to include part of it as a museum in the future. There's a small cafe on site - I grabbed soup, sandwich, and a homemade piece of ginger cake - all was surprisingly delicious!! All in all I had a fantastic visit and could've even spent more time there! And would happily visit again next time I'm in the area!

There are so many prehistorical tools and excellent information - videos, interactive exhibits, dioramas and reproductions - that I could have spent another hour exploring the 4-5 rooms that make up this museum. It's well worth the visit - Kilmartin is a surprising gem with a lot to offer in a tiny village.

A small but excellent archaeological museum housed in an old manse (£5 admission - £4 concessions)…read more What a great opportunity to learn about this fascinating area of Scotland where the first kings were crowned! There are many artefacts from local ancient monuments, prehistoric material from Kilmartin and area itself, including flint knives, plus interesting reconstructions. Apparently, there are over 350 ancient monuments within a 6 mile radius of Kilmartin with 150 being prehistoric! We thought the best feature was the timeline display of local history plus the tactile displays which were very instructive with excellent audio descriptions available. The shop was well stocked and interesting with some lovely gifts available, from aprons, bags, toys, china and pens to a particularly excellent range of books. (Some T-shirts would be a good idea in future)

A lovely place Be…read moreaware: Marker on map is way off (at the time I wrote this at least - Park is at the Balloch Castle in Balloch) We walked around Balloch for a while until we started walking along the Loch. It's a nice, pretty short trail leading along the Loch or through the woods. Shortly after you'll find yourself on a huge lawn in front of the Balloch Castle. There are several trails around this area to choose from. The big lawn is really a paradise for humans and pets as well. Even though it was a lovely summer day it never felt crowded and everybody had enough space to do whatever they liked. A good place to let your doggy run free. It offers lots of nice picnic spots with nice views. The Castle itself was partly under construction at the time. The lakeside right at Balloch feels more crowded, be sure to walk just a wee bit further to this park for more space and more views.

It…read moremay be worth paying the £6 odd train fare and a 40min train journey from Glasgow to go to a park not absolutely mobbed with people and noise. It's about a 10min walk from the train station and there's a Keystore little shop which I am guessing would be good for grabbing snack and beverage provisions. We also have GPS on two phone so not worried about getting lost...
