    Killington Big House

We held a family reunion for 28 people at the Killington Big House this June. We had quite a few emails go back and forth with lots of little questions because I wanted everything to go well for our family get together. I often got responses back in a few hours or less. The house is within a few miles of the ski areas in Killington. We spent an afternoon taking a ride up Mt Killington in the gondolas, visited Thundering Falls just down the road a little, and did some shopping in Woodstock. Around the house itself we played whiffle-ball and corn-hole --which are long time family traditions. The living room was big enough for all of us to sit and talk, and we even held a surprise bridal shower for one of our nieces. Some watched the soccer games on one of the large TVs, while others played board games and others played ping pong. That was really nice--we all had room to be together, yet many nooks and crannies to be in smaller groups. It was the perfect setting for us to spend quality time together. There are two sizeable kitchens will all you need to prepare meals. All 28 of us were able to sit together in the dining area. There are 12 bedrooms--which worked great for us since me and my 3 siblings have a number of married kids. The rooms were all spacious and most beds were either queen size or king size (a must for some of us tall Dutch people). Many rooms had their own bathrooms, and some had shared. Though not planned to coincide with the reunion, my wife and I celebrated our 35th anniversary that week -- we honeymooned exactly 35 years prior in Vermont, but had not been back since. We we reminded how peaceful and gorgeous Vermont is!

We had kids, parents and grandparents and there was something for everyone. The kids loved the game room downstairs and I think everyone enjoyed the hot tub. Probably the best part was being 5 minutes from Pico Mountain and 5 minutes from Killington! It was pretty cool keeping our ski gear in the special cubbies the owner built to hold everything. Can't wait to go back!

I called the 1-800 number and no one answered. Thankfully, David from the property had emailed me a few days prior because they changed my room and his personal number was in his signature. He gave me the correct code to get in. Who knows how long I would have been standing outside at night waiting if I didn't have his direct cellphone number. This was after I slipped and had a horrible fall on the icy walkway directly in front of the units. My knees are literally aching, swollen and black and blue. This made skiing the next morning quite painful. I also injured one of my hands. I emailed photos of the injury and was essentially told by Barbara "sorry..." and "...bad weather is expected..." I think safety should also be expected. They were unwilling to offer any sort of remedy for the injury and inconvenience the fall caused. The close proximity to the mountain is not worth the trouble. Stay elsewhere if you can.

If you show up after hours there is no one at the front desk and you need to drive up the road about 2-3 miles in order to get the keys. The signs are very poor explaining where to go. You get daily service but nothing special, someone come to make the bed sloppily and take out the garbage.

The ambiance was very memorable -- from the adorable covered bridge you drive through, to the architecture of the inn, to the sweet greeting from innkeeper Bill. We felt like we were visiting someone's home, and we could definitely sense Bill's passion for the place. We visited around Christmastime during Covid-19, so Killington wasn't as busy as I'm sure it usually is. We had the choice of eating in the dining room or in their lounge in front of the HUGE and beautifully decorated tree. Christmas music was softly playing, and the romantic cabin aesthetic really made me feel like I was living in a real life Hallmark movie. The food was good, not SUPER memorable, but very yummy. We had the brie (my favorite), ravioli and NY strip steak. Overall, the experience was fantastic for our anniversary. Try it out!

About the property, it is nice and seems well cared for and has beautiful views of the reservoir and surrounding mountains. Rooms are a bit dated, but clean. All the staff we met were very friendly. We had a chance to eat dinner at the restaurant on site and we were pleasantly surprised at the caliber of the food, well above standard "hotel" dining. This carried through to the food which was served to us at the wedding, again well above what we expected. There are a variety of activities available, but we felt that the property didn't quite rise to the "resort" bar. Again, winter might be completely different.

Unfortunately, our experience with the wedding coordination was disappointing. As first-time wedding planners, we expected our coordinator to provide guidance, organization, and help keep us on track throughout the planning process. Instead, communication was often slow or nonexistent, and we frequently felt like we were the ones managing the timeline, asking all the questions, and coordinating the details ourselves. We were hoping for someone who was organized, proactive, and warm, but that wasn't our experience. To make matters worse, the day after our wedding we received an additional bill for charges that were not included in our original estimate. Not only were these charges unexpected, but they also appeared inaccurate and came with no explanation as to why such a significant amount had been added after the fact. It created unnecessary stress immediately following what should have been a joyful weekend. The venue is truly stunning, and we're grateful for the beautiful setting. However, the lack of organization, communication, and transparency during the planning process made what should have been an exciting experience far more stressful than it needed to be. We hope this feedback helps improve the experience for future couples.
