If a warm fire, great food and excellent staff are your thing then welcome to the Summit Lodge! They do everything very well and with this atmosphere you can't go wrong.

So this continues my trip around New England in Reviews! *Disclaimer* This review is for SUMMER. i have stayed here three years in a row now, in JULY. Although I assume the place is fantastic int he winter as well, I cant speak from personal experience. The grounds and Lodge : It is a traditional ski lodge setting. Not a huge, over developed 'resort' that is cookie cutter. It is nice, and unique. Great grounds, with shuffle board, horseshoes, a hot tub, a pool, and an indoor/outdoor bar. Lots of well manicured grass, and a great gazebo. It is easy to get around, and easy to be comfortable there. Inside, it is 'rustic' but not in a way that means old and run down. It is decorated like a lodge, not like a luxury hotel, which is fine. Lots of wood, lots of family pictures (and by family, I mean the St Bernard Pups - more on that later). Its comfortable, and it is what you would probably make your own lodge look like if you owned it! The staff: simple put, friendly. family owned and operated, it is always great. I could not imagine anyone ever complaining about the staff or how they were treated. You really feel like family there. The food AMAZING! so good. it is home cooked food, not restaurant service frozen food. One night they made salad and veggies for us, corn on the cob, BBQ chicken (yes, they had the huge BBQ grill outside near where we were sitting), and steak. SO GOOD! Breakfast the next morning. pancakes and french toast, bacon and sausage, and great eggs (not like the horrid powdered eggs at the ramada) Everything is top quality and terrific! The Guest rooms. Well, not bad, but not perfect. (this is where the 4 stars comes from instead of the 5). basic, and get the job done. But for summer, all of the rooms do not have AC, only some (maybe they all do now, I know last year iI was in a room with no AC, this year I was - it seems like they are methodically adding it as they can, versus dumping all the money at once - cant fault them for being smart!) The beds, IMO, could use replacing. Beds get old. And that is one spot that chains spend a TON of money on (like Hyatt, Hilton, etc) is developing their own line of beds for hotel use. A small place cant do that. They werent horrible, but not great either. I still slept. Just keep it in mind if you come here, if you are looking for super plush luxurious bedrooms, you wont get them. if you are looking for basic, comfortable rooms that get the job done - youre golden THE PUPPIES! ok, puppies is relative. They have St Bernards. Who are friendly, and eager to say hi, and walk around the grounds. if youre not a dog person, you may not like it here, as the theme of the lodge does revolve around these amazing pups. They have two new ones this year, one was 13 months old (and 100 pounds) and one 6 months old (and 80 pounds). They are gentle giants, they dont beg for food, they dont annoy you, but are lovable. So great to have them around, really give it more of a HOME feel if you are up at Killington in the spring/summer/fall, IMO, there is NO better place to stay than here. I would imagine in the winter it is great as well. it is a great family style lodge, where you get to know the other people there, you dont just go to your room. Meet new people, be comfortable, enjoy great food and have fun!

When I was growing up, my parents would take us up to a number of inns and lodges like the Birkenhouse Chalet at the base of Stratton VT. There was a style and aesthetic to these sorts of hotels, lots of wood, fireplaces, and a sense of safety for my little sister and I to run amok and play. There were all sorts of things I loved about our VT vacations when I was a kid, and up until this past weekend, I thought places like our beloved VT hotels of our childhood were a thing of the past. Well not anymore... we found some old school VT fun at the Summit Lodge & Resort! I have to tell you, I thought I'd find the whole St. Bernard thing a little annoying, but it didn't take me long to endear myself to Rachel, their latest pup. The motif is kind of adorable and my son and I enjoyed reading the stories about all the St. Bernards that lived there over the past 40 years. Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff, who not only gave us a tour but also helped us with our bags. The 45 room property felt so big with so many rooms. Our room itself was kind of adorable. For $119, we had a comfortable sized room with two beds and a balcony. The bathroom was clean with plenty of towels and the beds were clean and comfortable enough. I read other reviews about the hotel needing renovations... well they must have done them because the room felt clean and updated to me. I loved the plates on the wall with the ivy painting, so kitchy. We had a long drive to get to the Beast, so we decided to just enjoy hanging out on the property. Taking advantage of the amenities, we swam in the outdoor heated pool, hung out in the hot tub, played pool (billiards) and even had dinner in the pub downstairs. The service was AWESOME and the food was pretty decent. I had the pork schnitzel which was new on the menu and I have to say it had that home made flavor ... it was very good I downed the whole thing! We followed it up with the chocolate mouse which was delicious. Had I had more time I would have spent some time relaxing in the little reading room with the fireplace. Breakfast is included. We had a lovely, filling, tasty meal with coffee, juice, pancakes, french toast, bacon and REAL VT maple syrup in this lovely room with lots of windows. It was such a great way to start the day. I've stayed in a bunch of hotels at Killington, and I have to say, this was the first one that felt homey and friendly. It's definitely more of an old people / family place, there's NO party here. Even the pub bar downstairs was subdued with older grown up people. I liked this about the property as I was traveling with my 9 year old and didn't want to be in the throws if things. I think we DEFINITELY got what we paid for with regards to value, proximity to the mountain base lodges, service and fun. The staff was delightful and personable. The atmosphere was straight up charming VT style. Hey, the dogs were even cute, and I am usually not a big fan of big dogs. Without a doubt, we loved this place and we're definitely planning on returning again the next time we decide to ride the Beast. Summit Lodge, a great throwback to the way my parents used to travel, big thumbs up for giving us a nice place to crash in VT style.

    Watch out for Teddy!

Decided to spend a few days in the mountains in early December. Chose this place because of the excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and Yelp. The lodge was very empty (felt like we were the only people there). The hot tub was very nice and we enjoyed the free breakfast ($2.50 gratuity required) each morning. The rooms were very outdated (we stayed in #10) but there was a rustic/lodge feel. As some other reviewers have stated, the beds were hard - really hard! I'd recommend bringing shower shoes or flip flops because the bathroom was not very clean. The shower head was old and very short (I had to duck down to get any water). As for the Saint Bernards, we enjoyed the photographs, artwork, and reading each dog's story over breakfast. However, the current dogs Teddy and Rachel were not very friendly to us. In fact, when I was trying to give Teddy a pat on the head he snapped at me. Not in a playful way but like he was trying to maw my hand off. I'd recommend approaching these dogs with caution. They'll leave you alone, but don't expect a cute cuddly photo op.

Hidden gem! Classic charm and a perfect example of what a Vermont ski lodge should be...tons of fireplaces, friendly staff, heated pool, sauna, hot tub for 12-14, and all types of love for the friendly Saint Bernards roaming the grounds. the great food is the icing on the cake!!
