Fantastic hotel! Stayed here recently for a work trip and I would definitely come back. Rooms were very clean with a modern touch. There are plenty of amenities throughout the hotel that make for a welcoming stay. The hotel was actually fairly quiet too, which was a major win for me. Inside the hotel they have a few restaurants- Boleo and Steadfast (Steadfast can be ordered via room service too!). The hotel is within walking distance to tons of restaurants and fairly close to Millennium Park too. The rooms have mini fridges (stocked with drinks you can purchase), safe, robes, and even a yoga mat you can use! I've never seen that before and I thought was a great idea. Things to keep in mind: -if you drive a car, you will have to pay for parking. -there is not complementary breakfast; however there is a Protein Bar located on the first floor by the Lasalle entrance. There is free coffee and tea in the mornings at the front desk and they mentioned a happy hour in the evenings. read more

What makes this hotel so awesome is the staff. My girlfriend and I stayed here on our winter getaway Dec-28-30. We all know the dilemma we face at the airport with air crew staffing issues, we had to take a red eye from LA to Chicago and arrived in the early hours way a head of the 3:00 pm check in time. After arriving and being flashed on the L this weary traveler was ready to get some shut eye and was hoping to get checked in early. We arrived in the very early morning of the 28th and was greeted at the front desk by a very pleasurable young gentleman (forgot his name) and without hassle checked us into a beautiful room with a very comfortable bed. The hotel is a beautiful setting in a great location close and walking distance to all things to see in Chicago. I can't remark enough on how nice, accommodating, and pleasurable the staff of this hotel are. This will be my first choice of places to stay when in Chicago. read more

Read some of the most recent reviews before booking. Not sure if this was a nice hotel To stay at in the past, but I'm trying to wrap my head around how this hotel has such high reviews. My boyfriend and I recently stayed here this past weekend, and while the building itself is very beautiful that is literally the only thing it has going for it. Beware the restaurant and rooftop bar are closed because of the short staff, however, the hotel is being shady and reflecting that these amenities are available when you book. Rooms will only come with 2 towels, room service probably won't clean your room, concierge is going to basically tell you to F off the entire time when you need basic things. Kimpton goes above and beyond to provide personalised service in their boutique hotels, and here is no different. Chicago Marathon: Perfect hotel for Marathoners. The start line/finish line is a .5 mile walk away from the hotel. The hotel restaurant opened early for spectators, and the hotel set out tea, water, & fruit as early as 0500 for runners! It was a really supportive environment. Location: THERE IS A DIRECTLY CONNECTED REAL LIFE, FULL FLEDGED STARBUCKS. If you walk through the giant 1st floor atrium towards the gorgeous historic marble staircase there's a door to get to Starbucks, no need to go outside. (fun fact: there is another Kimpton in the city with a directly connected Starbucks) A Walgreens is on the next block, a short 2 minute walk away. Millennium Park complete with museums, art, "The Bean" (Cloud Gate), & resturants is a 1/2 mile walk away! Kimpton Gray is in the financial district, so the hustle and bustle of Chicago is MIA here during weekends. I didn't mind at all, it made exploring via running/walking/uber that much easier. Once the weekday rolled around the difference was CRAZY! It gets very busy on this block, as expected in any major city. Hotel layout: Floors 2-12 are guest rooms. The first floor has two entrances & a restaurant Steadfast. The 2nd floor has the lobby, gym, & a restaurant Vol 39. The spa is closed Sunday & Monday. The spa wasn't open when they were supposed to be, so I used another spa in the city. Floor 14 (really 13 if we're being technical here) hosts the ballroom parties. Floor 15 (really 14) has a rooftop and restaurant "Boleo". Staff: First, major props to the front desk staff here. I called & monopolized Keith's time for about 1/2 an hour going through hotel room options. He was so patient & such a good sport. I'm looking for 500+ square feet, privacy, quiet, views, etc. Keith went above & beyond to really search for a room that would meet my expectations. The valet & bell hops were great. Everyone was so nice and professional. The housekeeping always came & went super quick & did a great job. Online booking: Definitely book directly via Kimpton, they'll match any cheaper prices you do fine elsewhere. The online booking for this hotel in particular is not descriptive enough (in hindsight) of what each room offers. If you're particular (like me) call the hotel & get details. Tall King Suite: Originally I booked the "Tall King Suite"- fine option, slightly more square footage, positioned in a very quiet & secluded area of the hotel floors, but your view will be more of an alley view. It's not the largest room offered. King Suite: The King suite rooms are two rooms, the living room (w pullout couch) & bedroom. That alone does provide some privacy but the best part for me is there's master bathroom that has DUAL sinks, spa tub & shower, with an interior toilet room (with its OWN sliding door). Not sure that all King Suites are exactly the same layout though! The King suite rooms are not available on the corner of the hotel, (the deluxe king rooms are though), I didn't want to sacrifice square footage or bathroom space for a corner room. The King suite I stayed in has 2 bathrooms (1 full + powder room to be precise), *hello* finally a well designed room! I was in Chicago during the MLB playoffs. The Washington DC Nats were in town. There was also the Chicago Marathon. I can't be sure if what I paid is a deal, high, or right on the money for a busy city. However, I feel that this room is WELL WORTH every penny spent. This was right across the street to where I work, while I was visiting. The location is great because it's close enough to all the shopping on State Street and then Millennium Park and the Willis Tower and Union Station. On the flip side it is the loop and there is a lot of traffic. I appreciate the door guys opening the heavy doors while we come in and go out. There are tons of elevators so wait is not ever long. The room is not very big but it is very pretty in terms of decor. The bed was also really comfy. I wish there was another chair other than the office chair to sit and relax in. The shower head was a little drippy but we ended up just putting a towel down so as not to hear it while trying to sleep. It's awesome that they have a happy hour with complimentary wine, and a coffee and hot cocoa bar in the morning. I had to ask for decaf and they freshly brewed that for me so kudos for them for doing that. What I loved most was how dog friendly they are no matter the size no fee! read more

I didn't really get to try many of the amenities here because I was out seeing this amazing city, but they were especially fantastic with helping me get my ton of luggage and my two animals in the room (I'm moving cross country). The Front desk was really helpful with recommendations, I absolutely loved the art institute, and the rooms were great and beds comfy. I would absolutely go back. Only maybe 4 or 5 blocks to Millenium Park and the art institute so location pretty great too. read more

It's kind of odd staying in a hotel in the city in which I live, but why not? You see, it was my husband's birthday and we decided to have dinner and drinks downtown, and we thought it would be fun to get ready in a hotel and stay the night after we were done celebrating. This was a Sunday night, and we both work just a block away, so being able to roll out of bed on a Monday morning and being mere steps from our offices was highly alluring. The Kimpton Hotel chain always treats us well. From the champagne and cupcakes waiting for us in our room, to the texts making sure we had everything we needed during our stay, they were on top of everything. Our room was on the small side, but for one night, it did the trick. We were on a lower floor so the view wasn't great (In fact the view was of my office building!). If I had been a tourist, this would have prompted me to request a room on a higher floor, but I get to enjoy stellar views of this beautiful city whenever I want, so not a big deal. Since it was a Sunday, we did not get to enjoy a cocktail as both Vol. 39 and Boleo are closed on Sundays. That was a bummer, but swilling champagne in your own room ain't too shabby. We will definitely stay here again as Kimpton always does right by us. (And as a side note, my office had their holiday party at this hotel, and it was five stars across the board.) read more

Amenities that they offer both in the room and that you can request are of good variety and quality. The valet parking for the hotel is also pretty worth it because it is 24/7 and you can send a text to the valet so they can bring your car and they text you when it's ready. I am generally a fan of Kimptons and have always had great experiences at their properties, but the Gray has been my favorite stay so far. This hotel is straight out a 1920's day dream-- but so modern, cozy, & stylish. Every detail is gorgeous. The staff is absolutely wonderful-- they were welcoming and gracious at every turn. The gray has several of their own dining & drinking establishments, plus a large livingroom where you can work, hang-out, or whatever. They serve coffee in the AM and wine in the PM. There's also a side door into both starbucks and the protein bar (which you should try!). The gym is well stocked with dumbells (up to 50 lbs), kettlebells & medicine balls, several weight machines & a cable machine-- plus the usual compliment of cardio machines. It's nice large room, with windows, mirrors, etc. In terms of the guest rooms: Mine was large, clean, and as stylish as the rest of the property. We are just leaving from our stay at the Kimpton Gray Hotel. The location was excellent and we were able to walk to the river walk, terrific restaurants, Millennium Park, and lots of good shopping within a mile or so. Aesthetically, it is a beautiful old building, clean, and full of architectural interest. The decor is lovely-modern, artistic, comfortable. The gym is a great size and worthy of a full workout. There is a happy hour every night. This was a great surprise and a nice way to enjoy the many wonderful areas to sit in the lobby and chat with friends. Now for the main reason that I am writing this review. The staff at the Kimpton Gray is top notch. They are friendly, helpful, and responsive. Even before we arrived, I was able to call for recommendations that turned out to be spot on. This hotel is a great place to stay if you want to enjoy Chicago. read more

This was my first visit to The Gray, and I will definitely be back!! Upon walking into the hotel-EVERY SINGLE TEAM MEMBER was beyond friendly and helpful, and welcoming!! It felt like family!! Stayed here in October. Cute little room. The rooms were kind of "dark" which i enjoy. Everything was clean. The fridge was fully stocked for purchase. I got to the hotel around 9am, WAY before check in time, but i was able to leave my bags with the attendent and the person who checked me in said i was first to be called for the first available room. She actually called me back at 1030 while i was out site seeing. I also received a $10 gift card to use for any items in the fridge or ontop of the fridge (which consisted of candies, chips, etc.) or to use at their rooftop bar. I arrived on a sunday so the hotel bar was closed. There was happy hour in the evening, which was free glasses of red/white wine and i think beer. Coffee station 24/7 in the lounge. Bathroom was spacious. altho the shower didn't have a "door" to it :) Cable, WiFI, plenty of electrical plugs. slept sound and comfy. You can order breakfast the night before to be delievered but i'm not totally sure they had a menu to order at any time of the day. Steadfast is a restaurant that is attached to the Kimpton. I would not recommend that place however. Modern designs and fixtures in the hotel room. You need a card to swipe to the hotel room floors. I would stay again for my next visit. read more

(Cross-posting from Expedia regarding our stay at Kimpton Gray in December 2018) An impeccable and comfortable hotel that has pretty much everything that you'll need. We only spent one night there but had a very relaxing time. The hotel restaurants seemed to be closed on this Sunday because it was so slow but we enjoyed the complimentary wine hour in the cozy, well-designed lobby. The only downside is that the area which the hotel is located in has a lot of offices and therefore not as busy on the weekends and at night. There are still some food and drink options but it will mostly be touristy ones. Cheaper parking is also very hard to find in the area. The hotel does, however, offer a pretty expensive valet option if you don't want to deal with the parking hassle. We are very happy overall and would come back to The Gray or any of the other Kimpton hotels. read more

What can I say? The Kimpton Gray is amazing. I was greeted with an awesome staff who were very well-informed about the local area the Loop. Miles, the front desk clerk, had a near encyclopedic knowledge about the local restaurants, museums, and other attractions. I actually took him up on some of his suggestions. Be sure to get a map from them, it was a godsend. They also have a nice little water bowl off to the side of the front desk for the doggos, if you bring one. The hotel is centrally located, with access to several "L" train lines. I was able to take the orange line to the hotel from Midway Airport and the Red Line, located on Monroe, to O'Hare. The city is highly walkable, however, and I was able to get to the river, West Loop, Millennium Park, and the Magnificent Mile without much trouble. There are loads of restaurants all over the place too. They let me check-in early, way early, around 10am. My room was AWESOME. It was one of their suites, I believe, and it had a sitting room, separate bedroom with a door, and a luxurious bathroom. The tub was the best part. I took three baths while I was there. The front desk staff was nice enough to provide me with a Keurig since I had missed their morning coffee stand. My welcome amenity (for Inner Circle membership) was to die for. I got a lovely prosecco, chocolate cupcake, and a scrummy cheese board with crostini, honeycomb, and fruit jam. The cupcake was probably the best I have ever had. And I've had maaaaany cupcakes during my lifetime. Wine hour, from 5-6 each evening, offered the standard libations of white or red wine. No beer option at this location. No snacks either, but that is rare anyway. Adam, who was serving the wine, topped me up a few times. Great service! The gym is awesome. They have elliptical, treadmills, free weights, regular weight machines, bikes, strength bands, medicine balls, and exercise balls. They also have plenty of filtered water for your hydration :) And if the gym isn't your thing they have a bike you can use to tool around the city or opt for in-room yoga with the mat they provide. I will definitely go back to this hotel. I had an absolutely wonderful experience. read more

Lovely stay greatly enhanced by the fact that these are some of the comfiest beds ever in any hotel. The staff from arrival to check out is super courteous and welcoming. Our room was cozy and spacious with high quality toiletries. This hotel is pet friendly, which is a nice touch in case you are traveling with your furry companion. The location is perfect, as you are a 10 minute, leisurely walk to Millenium Park. Several stores like Walgreens and CVS nearby as well as pretty good restaurants in the same building/block. read more

This is my first stay at a Kimpton property. It is really a spectacular hotel, especially for the price! So many extra touches that make me love Kimpton already! The hotel itself is so fresh, beautiful and every detail is just so well thought out and inspiring. Michelle and Miles were at the front desk. Michelle was warm, welcoming, engaging and very professional. We would return just to say hello to her! Miles was so helpful not just to share with us great restaurants, but also his favorite dishes. He was spot on.. We loved our dinner! The complimentary wine hour was so much fun and a great way to connect with other guests. We had fun raiding the extremely well-stocked fridge with our bonus Kimpton Karma award. And I can't wait to return with my pup, who will think she is really special with homemade dog treats, a comfy dog bed and a water stop in the front lobby. We have tried all 3 Kimpton's in the Chicago area in the last year, and this one did not disappoint!! We can't get enough of the little perks these hotels offer - complimentary happy hour from 5pm-6pm, free coffee (and the sweetest little iced coffee bar!) in the mornings, apples in the workout room, etc. We stayed in the King Spa Suite and it was decadent!! I loved that the Gray has a very large workout room and TWO peloton bikes! I currently have the personal record on Peloton #2 if anyone wants to TRY and beat it . My husband thought the lululemon workout clothes service was a little strange, but then ended up needing it as he forgot his workout shirt. The clothes looked brand new and were delivered to our room for a seamless workout! I loved that they made our stay so simple and luxurious. The robes in the room are a nice touch, too! The lobby is fantastic and is a great place to relax. Unfortunately we were there on a day when Volume 39 and Boleo were closed, so we'll have to come back to try those out! Boleo would have been our #1 option to eat, but we were given some great recommendations from the concierge to make up for it! The hotel staff were beyond knowledgeable of the area and super hospitable. Definitely a great place to stay! read more

I was excited about our stay at first. The first night was great with the free wine at 5:00pm. The staff seemed nice and willing to help you. Everything was great until we entered the room. The room was beautiful until we caught wind of the odor. We realized that it was from the hotel being "pet friendly". It's all in the carpet. The second night was going okay until we realized that the wedding party DJ was going to be jamming all night. And we can hear it in our room. The location is great. If you are in need of a place to party all night, then this is a place for you. read more

I enjoyed my stay at Kimpton Gray a lot! You can't beat the location - it puts you right in the middle of downtown, walkable to Macy's, the Beans, and Wildberries and a bunch of great etaries. The service itself was fabulous and quick, too - I requested an early check-in, and they were able to graciously accommodate that. They offer complimentary coffee/teas in the mornings, and free wine tasting in the evenings. The text message system they implement makes it easy to request little items, like toothpaste, a kettle, more towels, etc. The lobby was a stunning sea of gold and marble and brass. A new hotel that is off to a great start. The stay here has been great on the whole. The service is exceptional. Probably because everyone is fresh off being trained and excited about their job. I hope they retain this. I would come back here again even with some of the things I was less than taken with listed below. Some pluses -very prompt and on point service -super comfy beds with nice linens -stylish and sexy rooms with great lighting fixtures -forgot something? No worries! Forgot my flat iron and they saved me with a free loaner. Lots of other items to loan as well. -comfortable lounge and common areas with cool music -free coffee in the am -free wine in the afternoon -super plush and comfy robes -yoga mat, bikes,and umbrellas to borrow -decor and atmosphere throughout the hotel is beautiful and I love the artwork Some minuses -the shower has poor water pressure -there is basically half a shower door -1 ply toilet paper -close to the elevator and the ding!! is quite loud -not enough natural light with a small window -no business center, but front desk will print and scan items for you. -no ice machine First time I've ever stayed in The Loop and it was great to be in a new to me neighborhood. As is most everything in Chicago, it's a very walkable neighborhood. On the whole, pretty pleased with our stay here. read more

Very impressed with our stay. Came for a night in the city to see Hamilton and stayed in a king deluxe room. The room was a nice size and very modernity decorated. The staff was friendly and the complimentary tea and coffee in the morning was a nice touch. The bed was comfortable but nothing to write home about. The shower was slightly difficult to use. Getting a comfortable water temperature took some time and there isn't a full door which was kind of odd. There also isn't a fan in the bathroom which is kind of annoying. There were robes in the room as well as a yoga mat which was a very interesting option. We had drinks at both hotel bars. Vol. 39 had a very cool vibe. The drinks were interesting and the waiter knowledgeable. Boleo was louder and had more of a club feel but less crowded than it was built for. Bartender Philip was very friendly and took time to figure out what drinks we would enjoy including making new ones up for us. All in all, we will definitely stay again. I'm looking forwarding to gaining more perks through their reward program. read more

We came to Chicago to get away for a night to celebrate my birthday and the Gray did not disappoint! Large room at a great price, beautiful old building with modern updates, and walkable to a bunch of popular destinations (we walked over from the Art Institute and took a bit longer walk to dinner but still very doable). It was the little things though that made the stay really enjoyable: champagne and cupcake when we arrived in our room, a free wine and beer social hour, and easily accessible concierge for room service or anything we forgot. Mediocre service but beautiful venue. Came for a wedding. The server was in all The photos for the couples cutting the cake. It was a joke and he had no clue. He was very nice though. The bartender at the wedding was great and very kind. After a long day of wedding fun and dancing. We took off our heels and were told we had to put them back on. Pretty rudely. Not impressed. And then I waited a long time for someone at the front desk. To top it off, they lost my bag I checked. (Eventually found) and couldn't find out reservation in the system even though my husband had already checked in and spelled our names for them. Never coming back. Headline: A great business hotel with enough luxe to make it a lovely tourist spot. Small touches in design and service made it both an easy and excellent stay. The service: Excellent door service guiding me to the elevators (I had luggage), asking for taxi needs, holding doors, etc. The front desk was efficient, nicely polite, and uses the text service to check if anything else is needed. There was coffee laid out in the morning on the second floor and there is a happy hour in the space each evening. I didn't try either this trip, but definitely next time! The room: Spacious! My room had two beds and plenty of space to utilize the yoga mat to exercise in the morning. The TV was easy to use and had standard channels. Beds were comfy, pillows were fluffy, and at the end of a long day of travel and after a delightful dinner I sunk down and plugged my phone into the conveniently located USB outlet right at pillow height. Thoughtful design making life that much easier. All in all, this hotel did nothing but made my business trip more comfortable and easier, and as a bonus was walking distance from the CIBC theater where Hamilton was playing as well as Millennium Park! I worked out here for one week and my company paid for it, I'm happy I didn't have to pay anything for it myself because I wouldn't stay here if I did. If you want to sleep in or have a quiet evening, don't choose this hotel. All the floors have marble in the hallways and the doors just slam shut so it echoes. Doesn't matter where you are on the floor, you'll hear someone's door shutting. There's no pool at this location, one of their workout machines was broken and no one fixed it during my one week stay. The West Town diner downstairs has terrible pretentious food. I ordered their burger and asked for a different kind of cheese, they only have the pimento cheese which is (garbage) and they can't add condiments on your burger for you, it has to be put on the side. For over 350 dollars a night I'd expect a quieter evening and a relaxing morning to sleep in but nope, cleaning and mini bar crew come knocking around between 9-10am and let doors just slam shut. Depending on which side of the building you're staying in, the dump trucks pick up trash around 2-3am and they're loud as hell too. Fuck this place! I'll never stay here ever again or recommend anyone to try this place. read more

Me, my partner, and our beautiful cat, Saige, had to get out of our apartment for the night so we went to the Kimpton because they're pet friendly. We didn't expect anything special after we let the front desk know Saige was coming. We showed up in the room to the coziest cat bed and a food and water bowl!!! It was the nicest surprise. Staff was so nice and the room was sick. They also have glass bottled cocktails at the front desk in place of bar service during COVID. They were delicious and such a good idea. This is a cute little Boutique hotel located in the heart of downtown Chicago, and near the theater district. The entire staff was PHENOMENAL! From the time we pulled up to valet Park, check-in and get Bell service to our room, the service was exceptional. We travel a lot for business and pleasure and the Kimpton properties have ALWAYS been our favorite places to stay. From the nightly Happy hour to the morning coffee and tea bar, the Kimpton hotels understand what their guest need and makes every effort to create a memorable travel experience! Beautifully decorated hotel with several attractive restaurant options. Room was very comfortably sized and appointed. Lovely bathroom with quality bath products. Location is close to the train and about a 10 minute walk to the riverfront, State street shopping, and other attractions, but not necessarily in the heart of downtown. 2 things were lacking for me. 1) the front desk is on the 2nd floor. I was greeted by a couple valet guys, but it wasn't immediately clear where I should be checking in - wasn't the best first impression. 2) the parking at the hotel is expensive, so we parked at a garage down the street. However, the garage is mostly valet, so it's very unclear where you can park. In the future, I would just pay for valet. read more

First time staying in a Kimpton hotel, and will not be my last time either. I selected this hotel as it is literally two blocks straight down from CIBC theatre where they have Broadway shows. Currently they have Hamilton, which was amazing. Back to Kimpton Gray... the employees from the doormen to the front desk to the room attendants, all were friendly and kind. We felt like we knew them already. Our hotel room was spacious, clean, with a sitting area. They have yoga mats in the room to use, an umbrella, robes, ear plugs if you are with someone that snores. If you forget to bring an item, they have a list to borrow or keep that they will bring to your room. The list also says if it is not on the list they will go get it for you outside of the hotel. After all the pleasant team members, I think they really would. If I had to find something that may bother someone, it would be to select a room that is down the hallway from the elevator section. Reason being is outside the elevator is a shiny clean hard flooring. Sounds fine, right! Well if your room is on that flooring section and not the carpet section it can be a bit loud with things rolling past your room or echoing for guests that do not realize how loud their voices are as they are speaking loud. I did not find it intrusive, however know some would. So there's your heads up. Each day from 5-6pm they have complimentary wine, and if you are feeling hungry the attached restaurant has a nice happy hour with large appetizers. They also serve dinner, lunch and breakfast. We didn't get to go into the rooftop bar so I can't tell you about it. It was closed when we went. I was told it is enclosed so you won't be exposed to the elements. When I head back for another broadway show, I will stay here again. I have already signed up to be a member and will explore other locations. Thank you Kimpton Gray! Oh!
