I was excited to try another Burmese place in Indy after seeing how many options there are. Last time I was in town, I missed out because the hours are so limited and I was driving by after 7pm. I finally made it here when they were open, but I was pretty disappointed in the experience. I ordered the tea salad, and it was really oily and the veggies didn't seem very fresh. It was literally laying in a puddle of oil. Then my entree arrived, the beef stew. It also was quite oily and greasy. I also got the feeling that everything wasn't as fresh as it could have been. I have had Burmese food in other places and loved it, but I didn't have the same experience here. How disappointing. read more

We've tried several Burmese restaurants around the southside but we always come back to Kimu. Their tea leaf salad is nice and salty and savory, and I love the tofu salad and the noodle salad (I get it without chicken). They will make it spicy, too, and it's a mouth-burner. Family says the meat dishes are also good. Only thing I can't recommend is the fried tofu, which was kinda greasy. Enjoy! read more

Not a traditional Burmese restaurant since they heavily advertised ramen noodles and served pan Asian foods as well. Pleasantly surprised by quality of food. Tea leaf salad was decent. Could have used a bit more tea leaves. Nan Gyi Thot as great. Exactly the taste I'd expect from the dish. My favorite was goat curry on the bone. Not creamy. Cooked traditional style and slow simmered. Fall off the bone tender. If you are expecting typical Indian curry you won't be happy. This is a drier curry cooked with more oil and ginger. I've never tried Burmese food in my life until I found this place. I fall in love with the Shan noodle. Thailand and Burmese are neighbor but I've never visited the country. I didn't expect the similarity in the food. I'm amazed by this dish. The noodle with soup on the side is hard to find here but it's very common in Thailand, same as Burmese. Recommend : Hot tea (sweet, creamy and fragrance) Shan noodle with pork (Chicken is a little smushy for me) Kye Oo Si Chet I haven't tried their ramens but base on amount of Japanese people I saw. This Place!!! First off it is always full of foreigners (always a great sign when eating foreign food). It is in a strip mall around the corner from Eyeglass World but don't let this "hole in the wall" vibe turn you away! The flavor of the food makes it a must stop distention when I visit the south side! Where to start - this is Burmese food - a rare delicacy of ethnic food since it's a small place in Asia that has been in turmoil since 2005 then again in 2016-17. I would describe it as a mix of Thai and Vietnamese - richness of spice and rich flavor in every bite. The flavor of the broth is savory to the last cooler bite & the way the sauce wraps itself in rice or noodles - makes me envious. I have tried almost everything on the menu (can't believe I never wrote a review considering how many times I have been here!). The dishes are described very well ***heat caution*** medium here can make you sweat a little lol. Go with mild to no spice if you have little to no tolerance. If you do have a high tolerance start with medium to medium-hot -- hot is like the Thai scale of 4/4.5 out of 5. It comes out piping hot too. So if you decide a togo order is more your style - know it will be good till you get home (as long as you are no more than 15ish minutes away... may still need to cool a little more even still). read more

I ordered Burmese Shan noodles & samusas, my bf ordered the Kimu noodles (pho). The Burmese Shan noodles comes with broth and mixing it with all the spices makes is so hearty & delicious! The noodles are perfectly chewy. Would highly recommend this dish especially for cold weather. Don't forget to add some chili sauce for an extra kick. The samusas were also a great appetizer. The pho had a lighter broth, but still lots of flavor. Will definitely be back here soon! read more

Our group enjoyed not only a quiet space for a chat but the waitress was very gracious and kept returning to answer our ignorant questions about Burmese food...what is this sauce for or how do you eat this etc. It is an amazing little spot with fresh ingredients, real Burmese food and a nice space for a gathering. We had their spring rolls which were crispy and filled with veggies. I then got a veggie soup which was so filling I had to bring half home with me. The favors were complex and layered plus you could add herbs, lime and fresh sprits to it as desired. Beware the green sauce as the seeds are FIRE hot! But it adds a nice flavor is you can avoid adding the seeds to your dish. A nice spot to try a new cuisine and reasonable priced for what you get! read more

I had some time to kill between appointments in the Greenwood area so I consulted the saved placed to eat map on Google that my husband created. It showed the closest restaurant was Kimu Restaurant. This is a Burmese restaurant. Yea have never eaten the cuisine so I was excited to try it out. I went in and was seated immediately. The lovely waitress brought over a menu and some iced water. It took me quite a bit of time to decide what to eat. I had heard of Samusas before but never had a chance to try them. They are fried pastries filled with potatoes and onions served with a hot sauce. They were brought to the table and arrived golden brown and delicious(I like to call it GBD). They were piping hot but I have to say the sauce was a great compliment. I thoroughly enjoyed them. The main dish was a hard choice but in the end I ordered the steamed whole fish. I've seen it on a few menus and today seemed like a good day to make it happen. She didn't know what type of fish but it didn't really matter. She informed me it would take about 20 minutes and made sure that was ok. I had plenty of time to just relax and take on the atmosphere. Lots of people came and went as I sat there. They did a lot of take out and many people came in to dine as well. My fish finally arrived. It was served in a broth of sorts with several vegetables and smelled so fragrant. I do believe there were pieces of lemongrass there too. I also spotted carrots, green onion, and tomatoes. It was accompanied by a side of steamed rice and a bowl of a sauce which contained Thai chilis maybe because boy it was spicy. Funny thing is I'm not a huge spicy fan but I just kept eating it. The fish dipped into it was fantastic. I had tears running down my face from the heat but that didn't stop me. I enjoyed the meal so much. I asked for another glass of water and the check. The meal was more than i cold have asked for especially since I didn't know what I was getting myself into. If you are adventurous go visit Kimu Restaurant and try something new. I'm so glad I did. Such a gem! The Burmese food here is authentic, delicious, affordable, and comes into generous portions. I loved each of the three dishes I ordered (tea leaf salad, Shan noodles, pork with pickled mango), which was the perfect amount for 2 (3 people if you're not too hungry). Came here while in the area for work. While I don't have a ton of experience to compare the food to, it was very tasty and reasonably priced. It wasn't my favorite Burmese/Asian fusion style of restaurant I've been to, but my veggie soup was tasty and it hit the spot. Also had lots of leftovers! We were really looking forward to trying Kimu. As I am from out-of-state, my friend wanted me to try the local Burmese food. We got to the restaurant at 7:26 p.m. The sign was flashing "OPEN", and their listed closing time is 8:00. When we walked in two employees were sitting in the restaurant and immediately told us they were closed. We left and did not see anyone attempt to lock the door behind us or turn off their open sign. If you are closed you shouldn't leave your OPEN sign on to beckon customers in. read more

Glad I ventured in here. On a cold dreary day we were looking for something to warm us up and decided some sort of soup was in order, ,so we went in. Great choice. Good food. Service was fast and friendly. We opted for ramen. I had the Tonkutso Ramen and my guest had the Miso Ramen. Both came in big steaming bowls of yummy goodness. Eggs, pork belly and other goodies floating atop huge bowls of broth and ramen noodles. Just what we needed. Both broths were delicious in their own way. The pork belly was so tender it fell apart in our mouths. The egg done to perfection, the white solid as a rock, the yolk yellow (no green or blue edge as happens so often) and solid on the edge and liquid in the middle. And so many noodles we couldn't eat it all. I will certainly be back to sample more of their menu. PS: Ambiance not so much. read more

I love Kimu's stir-fried pork with pickled mango; it has a slightly spicy, tangy flavor that you can't really find elsewhere, with slivers of sour mango pickle, garlic, green onions, and charred pork. Although the pork shan noodles are delish, I definitely prefer the pickled mango pork for complexity and uniqueness of flavor. The veggie-lentil samusa (not samosa) and fried tofu are okay appetizers; however, I'd recommend saving your appetite for the delicious entrees instead. I next want to try the green tea leaf and tofu salads, if I can defeat my mango pork cravings. I also recommend the warm, slightly sweet Burmese milk tea, if you are a fan of Thai teas or similar. Service is average. There are typically 1-2 teenage-looking girls working service who look less than thrilled to be there. Another tip: Be wary of Kimu's hours, as they tend to close earlier than the advertised 8 PM time, without warning. I've noticed this trend at many Burmese restaurants across the state. We visited around 6:45PM on a Saturday, and they locked the doors around 6:55PM as a few customers knocked and tried to get in. I recommend on planning on an early dinner visit. read more

Yes, the food here is amazing. There are enough dishes for the less adventurous people in your party, but if you're here you should definitely try the Burmese dishes this place is known for. A real standout was the Burmese Tea Salad appetizer, which is a sometimes crunchy, slightly sour mix of flavors that is really interesting and a winner if you like your appetizers interesting and unique. I've never eaten tea leaves before, but you wouldn't know it was tea if it wasn't in the description. It was just a nice tasting green. Another thing that is not to be missed are the RAMEN dishes. The TONKATSU RAMEN is amazing, with tender pork and delicious broth and ramen noodles. It's one of the non-Burmese dishes on the must try list. The BURMESE SIMMERED WITH STEAM RICE with GOAT meat is outstanding, with a deep, rich flavor and tender meat that melts in your mouth. The BURMESE SHAN NOODLES were good, but not as good as some of the other things we've tried. Similarly, the NOODLE appetizer is good, but is recommend trying something else before you make your way to that dish. Lots of people will love it, though, so take that recommendation as you will. The LEMONADE/LEMON JUICE is good, and the BURMESE SWEET HOT TEA is a must try if you like tea. The MOH LET SAWNG is a sweet cold beverage that has tapioca bits that look disconcertingly like maggots. Tastes good, though, and if you like boba and you're in the mood for something different, it's worth a try. Delicious & Amazing! I had the Pork Konebung, it is absolutely fantastic! Similar to Chinese stir fry, but 90% better, with tastier veggies, crisper pork, and perfect spices. The dish has a couple of tiny dried whole thai red peppers thrown in: which I lightly nibbled, they add flavor to the dish, but only a spicy-hot flavor if you decide to bite the pepper and release the fiery seeds. Comes with fluffy rice, and a bowl of veggie stock soup. I eat a lot of Asian food, and Kimu Burmese Restaurant is one of the very best. Yum! Great service & great food Eat there, and thank me later. This is the best ramen outside of Japan I've ever eaten. I heard about it from a Japanese colleague, and he wasn't kidding, the food is outstanding. His exact words were "I don't think the owners are Japanese yet its some of the best ramen." He was right. It turns out that the shop is not owned by Japanese people, but by a Burmese refugee family that not only found shelter in Indianapolis, but started a small restaurant that serves up exciting, eclectic dishes. I had bookmarked Kimu a while back not realizing how close it was to my job so my sister and I went for the first time today for lunch. Already planning my next visit with the fiancée. Great sized portions, lots of flavor, friendly service - the smells alone will make you want to try everything on the menu. Don't be afraid to ask what something is if you aren't quite sure/google is your friend lol. Lunch is served until 3 and then it changes to dinner prices which are just a buck or two more than lunch. A stunner in a strip mall. I can't recall who told me check this place out and that makes me sad because I wish I could thank them. I've been twice and both times ordered too much food (just out of wanting to try many things). Highly recommended: egg rolls, any of their delicately & perfectly seasoned fried rices, beef shan noodle, simmered beef (the goat is good too but pretty fatty). Amazingly, even the soup you get with an entree is outstanding. Most restaurants would take the easy way out and serve some veggie broth or easy miso soup-type thing, but here, it's beautifully seasoned liquid gold with just a slick of fat to bring it all together. Pork Shan noodles are a must! I always get the noodles every time. Crispy pork and salty, peanutty noodles. Perfect especially for a cool day or just any day. Pork and mango is also great. The only downside when I got it for takeout was the small portion. Simmered beef was ok with some good flavors. It would've been good if it also included some vegetables. Kimu was my first venture into Burmese food, and I must say it was delicious! We visited on a Tuesday night and happened to be the only patrons during our meal. The restaurant is very clean and unassuming in its strip mall location; I honestly hadn't noticed it before despite how often I've driven past. I ordered the Veggie Fried Rice and Egg Rolls, and my husband had the Nan Gyi Thote and Samusas. Our food was prepared quickly. The service was so-so; my egg rolls weren't brought out with my fried rice, so I wasn't sure if they weren't being made at all or were just coming later. Thankfully, they showed up! You can tell it's a family-run restaurant and service may be a bit more lax than other places. The egg rolls and samusas had perfect, crispy wrapping. Despite my affinity for carbs, it's a pet peeve of mine to be served an egg roll with a wrapping that is as thick as a dumpling. We both really enjoyed our main dishes, but the disparity in portion sizes was interesting. I believe our dishes were the same price, but my fried rice was probably twice the size of my husband's dish. In all, our total was about $27 for a filling, delicious meal and we will be back. read more

Greenwood & Burmese are inextricably interwoven into the tapestry of my palate, my past and most definitely my dining future. I am thrilled to see this place invaded a strip mall of my past. I grew up in Greenwood, you see. I worked at Blockbuster in the same strip mall. Then, I fled. Never thinking I'd ever-ever-ever return to Greenwood -- let alone seeking it out for one of my favorite food stylings -- Burmese. I found out about Burmese at Yamo in SF (God bless you, the gentle women of Yamo). I even had a conversation a few years back when the Myanmar junta was heated that I'd love to bring a peaceful life to any Burmese kitchen ninja here in the States and open a restaurant. Alas... there has been a major influx of Burmese refugees in Greenwood. Yeah. I know. Sad... but beautiful. As a result, Kimu! Kimu is the stripped down, bare bones strip mall spot with the essentials. Kimu is your go to for curry in Indy, and by that I mean... Kimu has the best curry in Indy. Kimu is your lemongrass fix den. Kimu is the spot that puts "pork" on the menu and they really and always mean "pork belly." Kimu is the craziest cup of tea you've ever had: milky, rich, deep, a caffeinated dream of earth. Kimu is your penny pinching eating out option. Kimu is a quiet Saturday afternoon alone with a book and a bowl of their spicy tofu. Kimu is Greenwood 2011. And I am so damn proud to see this little hamlet "hole-in-the-wall" smack dab in the middle of everything I ran away from. You could consider me a Greenwood refugee, even. Kimu is tucked in the stripmall wasteland that is America and is placed next to Yats which the Indy Hipster scene is so beholden to. But fear not Kimu delivers!! Since a lot of religious refugees from Myanmar came here you get the sense that it does cater to the Burmese community. And that is fine by me !!! The staff is very friendly and the food was served quickly!! I love the pork Shan noodles and the lemongrass chicken was amazing! You really taste the authenticity in the flavor. It's as if someone's grandmother made it for them at home, yep I said it. I do recommend that you go at lunch time to save a little but the price itself is very reasonable. I will going back to Kimu (hopefully soon) and I certainly hope that many of you try it as well. Because of Myanmar's geographic location their food is inspired by southeast and south Asian cuisine, just think what if Indian food got married to Thai food and had a child. 3.5 Stars. Kimu is more Asian fusion while they do specialize in Burmese dishes. So I planned to skip the ramen, pho, and Americanized Chinese options. I went straight for the pork shan noodles, tea leaf salad, and a cup of Burmese sweet tea. The tea, while quite delicious is most likely instant. I don't believe it was freshly brewed since there was some undissolved powder at the bottom of the cup. Then came the pork shan noodles. I should've known it came with fatty pork near the belly region, but then again fatty pork is one of their main staples. The rice noodles were a little too slimy/overcooked for my liking. Sauce was very rich and it would've been nice if it came with a side of broth. It got very hard to swallow halfway...like eating paste. I should've gone with my first instinct: pork with pickled mango which comes with rice. The real winner was the tea leaf salad. I would definitely order this again. The flavors are really unique! I believe it fell into the category of: umami, sweet, savory, sour, spicy, and crunchy. It had a mixture of roasted green tea leaves, green cabbage, garlic, tomatoes, hot red and green chilies, salt, sesame seeds, roasted soybeans tossed with fish sauce and lime juice. Be forewarned, it is quite spicy so I recommend you to ask them to tone it down if you're not into diced Thai peppers mixed in seeds and all. While the Southside is a little drive for me. I'd probably revisit if I'm in the area looking for non-chain and ethnic cuisine. read more

I stopped by here as I was driving from Chicago to Cincinnati and it was on my way kind of. Very authentic Burmese food I'm Burmese so I think I am qualified to say that. I tried nan gyi thote (chicken noodle salad) and Shan noodles. Nan gyi thote was on point, very thick sauce which is how I like it. My only mistake was that she asked me if I wanted it spicy and I said yes.. I think I'm used to asking for spicy food in Americanized restaurants, I realized I cannot handle Burmese level spicy. Next time I think I'll ask for moderate spice. I took the Shan noodles to go and had them today. They were also very good I would have liked a little more pickled vegetables but minor gripe it was still very good and authentic. I live two hours from here maybe one day I will make my way back here again. For the people who want to try real Burmese food, hint: it's on the back of the menu. Kimu is a chin (an ethnic group in myanmar) name and I think the owners are Chin. They spoke Burmese with an accent but also spoke something else which I couldn't understand..
