Kina 'Ole Estate has been an absolute godsend for our family. The care the kupuna receive here is truly top-notch, and the grounds are peaceful, beautifully maintained, and serene. We were doing our best to care for our 94-year-old mother, who was adamant about living at home, but we eventually realized we couldn't provide the level of care she needed and deserved. Beth, the owner, compassionately guided us through the transition process. Within just two weeks of moving to Kina'Ole, my mom felt completely comfortable there and built real trust with the staff. While she is aware she isn't in her original home, she never asks to go back. She often shares how much she enjoys the variety of food, having staff always nearby to assist, spending time in the common room for group activities, and having her room cleaned for her. She also loves that services like haircuts, nail trims, and massages come directly to her! The staff goes above and beyond, decorating the home and planning special meals and activities for holidays and special occasions. At the same time, she can retreat to her private room whenever she wants quiet time, and having her own en-suite bathroom has been essential for her privacy and dignity. Our family visits frequently and stop in at various times during the day and evening, and no matter when we drop by, my mom is happy and exceptionally well cared for. She has developed genuine, sweet relationships with the caregivers, and it warms my heart to hear how lovingly they interact with all the residents. My mother has lived at Kina 'Ole for nine months now, and her doctors are thrilled with her progress. They noted that she looks fantastic and that all of her health numbers are great now that she consistently takes her medication, bathes, exercises, and participates in daily activities. The staff carefully monitors vital health metrics like water intake, weight, temperature, and blood pressure. The house manager is incredibly responsive, periodically sending us photo updates, and she even takes Mom to medical appointments when our family couldn't make it. Having to place your loved one in an assisted living facility is one of the most difficult decision for a family to make. The process is stressful, emotional & can be overwhelming! There are so many options out there & finding a facility that is the right fit for your loved one is so important. Our family had to make that heart wrenching decision to place my dad in an assisted living facility & after looking at many options & visiting many facilities we first placed him in a large facility that was very nice, staff was nice & looked like it had all the bells & whistles...after about 4 weeks & many reasons later we knew that it was not a good fit for him & we needed to move him...he needed a smaller more home like atmosphere with more individual attention. A friend suggested Kina'Ole in Kaneohe & we arranged for a tour with the owner Beth. From the very moment we entered the beautiful gated property we knew this was the place for dad...it was exactly what we were looking for! The grounds are so beautiful & well taken care of...3 separate homes on the property with beautiful trees & flowers everywhere...nice paved walkways & even a few chickens running around with their baby chicks...my dad loved it!! We decided to place him there & it is the best decision ever!!! Dad's house has 8 rooms...each resident has their own large bedroom & private bathroom which we could decorate however we wanted too...so it could feel like home for him...theres a large living room/common area where the residents have their daily activities & delicious home cooked meals & where they can just relax together on their own recliners & watch a movie together & have a snack. There's lots of staff to help out & to care for dad & all the residents...the entire staff at Kina'Ole are amazing!!! They have made the transition so easy for dad & our family & to watch dad immediately feel welcomed, comfortable & relaxed there has been the best feeling in the world!! Dad loves to be outdoors & take walks & the staff will take him outside twice a day for a nice long walk or whenever he'd like one...they truly care for the residents as though they were their own family members! Dad told me that he "feels spoiled" there cause they all so attentive & take such good care of him! I almost cried hearing him say those words because I knew we had found the perfect place for him!!! He is thriving & happy & so are we!!! We now don't have the constant worry we had before...we know that everyone at Kina'Ole makes it their priority to care for dad's physical & emotional well-being...we finally have peace of mind The icing on the cake was last week I got a text message for Wehilani (head nurse in his house) & she sent me pics of dad out & about with his housemates enjoying the gorgeous grounds & having fun with his new friends. Aloha Let me just start off by saying BEAUTIFUL. As soon as you drive into this beautiful private property you're surrounded with such a spacious and safe environment. KinaOle has 24 hr caregivers, monthly outings, music therapy with Maria, movement therapy and art therapy. When going into the homes each room is so spacious and has its own private bathroom. The staff are so welcoming and brings Aloha to the front door. These are not your typical CNA/NA's they're mostly all local young ladies and gentlemen that grew up here on the islands and treat our loved one like family. It was a difficult decision to put my mother into a care-home. I visited foster care homes and assisted living facilities. I found a gem in Kaneohe, Kina'ole Estates. As I drove through the secured gate, I felt a warm welcome in a tranquil home away from home. Beth Slavens, Co-founder/Director greeted us with "Aloha" and my mom even asked if her brother can come to Kina'ole Estates too. I feel at ease to leave my mom with Kina'ole's staff who are caring, compassionate and friendly. They make us feel like we are part of their ohana and welcome us to visit at any time. This puts us at ease. I told my mom that this is a combination daycare and nightly sleepovers as she is getting acclimated to her new home. Nadine and her awesome staff always keep me informed on any questions or concerns. They are staffed 24/7 so the staff at night bring the residents to the bathroom as needed or at their periodic bathroom checks. Mom used to wake up over four times a night for the bathroom so now, I'm sleeping much better. My mom loves the exercise, art, music and hula therapy. There are three homes on property. Being that my mom loves music, a staff member will also bring my mom to another home to enjoy more music. What I also like about Kina'ole Estates is that my mom is able to stay here to end of life. After a bout of hospital-acquired pneumonia turned our loved-one's nursing home stay from rehab to long-term care, our lives were turned inside out. While the CNAs and RNs at the nursing home provided all the basic care and kindness they could, the staffing just wasn't robust enough and we watched him go from walking to bedridden to rapid weight loss and failing, all within 2-1/2 months. We spent exhaustive amounts of time looking for alternative care that could give him a second chance, but despite a lot of glittering promises upfront from care placement agencies, every option came up empty. Finally we found Kina'Ole Estate. On our initial Google search, we breezed over Kina'Ole because we wrongly presumed from its architecture, design, and layout that only assisted living services would be offered. All the long-term care facilities we encountered looked like either a nursing home or a residential care home. Nestled in a gated, tropical setting in Kane'ohe, Kina'Ole is what long-term care should be, but seldom is. Each of the houses on the estate has no more than 8 residents, each with their own sizeable private room with en suite accessible bathroom and roll-in shower. The rooms are arranged around the periphery of each building so each resident has a bank of windows to provide sunlight and fresh breezes, as well as an individual split air conditioning unit for summer days if it gets a bit warm or humid. In the center of each house is a very large common room separated into various sitting areas where residents receive their meals (each house has a kitchen where the home-cooked meals are prepared) and are able to socialize and participate in the daily activities offered. Outside is a generous covered lanai with plenty of seating to enjoy a chat with other residents or visiting friends and relatives, or just relax to read a book. Each house has a full-time house manager and round-the-clock CNAs who are nothing short of amazing. The owner, Beth Slavens, has assembled the most wonderful group of caring individuals and each of them seems to take personal pride in providing exceptional care to the residents. The day our loved one moved in was the first day in months that we were able to finally breathe and know that he was getting the best care possible on O'ahu. Already our loved-one is perking up. He's gone from being stuck in a nursing home bed 24/7 to being safely assisted into a wheelchair and brought into the common room for every meal. They also take him outside so he can feel the sun and tradewinds. On his second day there, his caregiver wheeled him around for a complete tour of all the houses and he was alert and full of questions. In response to being asked if there is anything that can be done to help, Yes! Please re-examine my grandmother's mental state. Compare her to the other residents in her house. She does not belong there. If her file says advanced dementia - that is a false diagnosis. She is self aware. Has no trouble recognizing family members. She initiates and can hold a conversation. She is not incontinent. She can recount recent as well as past events. Whoever said she has bad dementia is misleading you. Forcing her to live in a house surrounded by advanced stage dementia patients is a form of psychological senior abuse, and reporting abuse of seniors is mandatory as per statutes HRS §§ 346-222, 346-224, 346-225, 346-250, 412:3-114.5. Your employee, Mapu, has my cell phone number if you need more information pertaining to her situation. Please help her by verifying her mental state of mind. She does not have advanced dementia and needs to be moved to an appropriate environment before depression causes more deterioration! Just spoke to the owner. She claimed my grandmother has plenty of activities and social contact, then got very defensive when I pointed out my grandmother said the opposite multiple times. She then implied my grandma was being manipulative and untruthful. I replied that I took care of her for 8 years prior and know her very well when she is not telling the truth. I am an assistant to a 92 year-old who moved into the Kina Ole Elima House about one and a half years ago. She is very happy there, and says that they treat her with respect. Not only do they treat her with respect, they treat her as if she is family!. Mary, the house manager at the Elima house, and all her staff are so wonderful! Mary, Tania, Grace, Anne, Andrea, and Sherinne are the best and they work well as a team. They are caring, respectful, friendly, kind, helpful, patient, and work very hard! This place has the hallmarks of a small place designed to maximize profits while completely ignoring the promise-you-the-moon contract. Examples of their inhumanity: patients cannot come and go at meals-they must file in together, sit in assigned seats, ad stay till everyone is done . They say they love pets but bring one and you may be told to carry it for the whole visit. Most egregiously, you can kiss goodbye your "security deposit" of $7,000. THE OWNERS CHARGED US FOR AN EXTRA MONTH OF PATIENT CARE DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE PATIENT HAD DIED WEEKS BEFORE. NOTHING IN THE CONTRACT ALLOWS THIS. THERE IS SOMETHING SICK ABOUT EXPLOITING GRIEVING FAMILIES BY CHARGING FOR THE CARE OF DEAD PEOPLE. read more

My dad loves it at the Kaneohe Estate. I live in Kailua and asked if he wanted to move to the Kailua place and he said no, he likes where he is, he likes the people who are caring for him and he is happy there. His doctor even told him that she noticed that he is gaining weight, he is smiling more and he is more engaged in conversation with her. Lori and everyone else there are just the best!!! I checked the various homes on the Windward side to see what was suitable for my mother. I wanted a home that was safe and comfortable for her. A home where it was friendly with a lot of Aloha spirit. She was getting forgetful, fell a few times at my home, her body was tired, and frankly it was difficult taking good care of my mother. I looked at homes where families would take care of her in their homes. Too small and cramped. And I feel that sometimes junior boy would be watching her when her caretakers had to go shopping. I looked at big nursing homes where there were a lot of participants. Just way too much people. Some of the patients could not even be taken to the bathrooms because there were just too many participants.Yes, they had activities to play, but I would think my mother would feel smothered because of the volume of people. And there were no special attention paid to the participants because once again----just way too many participants and not enough workers. When I finally went to Kinaole Estates, I soon found what I was looking for my mother. It was a gated community, so it just gave me a sense of security for her. Before entering the premises, you had to state who you were and who you had the appointment with. Now that is security! The workers were so friendly and had the Aloha Spirit, but they always are checking on the participants.. Because there are only 8 participants in each house, the participants had special one on one special attention. Although about 80% of these seniors here have some form of dementia, the workers make sure they are given the utmost attention. You can even arrange for them to take a participant to the doctors. And Beth, the owner even does hair cuts and styling for the men and women...Wow! and it's free. Need a massage, they even got that too. Need to cut those tough toenails or fingernails, they have a podiatrist visit every month. My Mom loves the food and snacks, the games, the music class,and most important to her------her own bedroom and her own bathroom! OK just check out their website to learn more about Kinaole Estates. Our family LOVES Kina Ole. Our mother adjusted quite quickly to this nuring home due to the very dedicated, knowledgeable and caring staff. They take the time to interact with the residents based on individual medical and physical capabilities. They are always incontact with us, keeping us updated on good, as well as problem situations. Elua house where my mom lives, is spacious and family oriented, each having their own room with a huge walk in bath/toilet . The house is always clean and inviting. She is never wanting for anything. The food is basically local, and she loves it. We are also free to bring in and share her favorite snacks. The staff is so friendly and always willing to do anything to keep my mom's spirits up. They have activities that keep the residents active, but also respect their need for down time. One of her doctor's was surprised to see that she could get out of bed and walk around.
