I rarely leave reviews, but my experience with management here--specifically this HEAD supervisor--was concerning enough to warrant it. There is a clear pattern of inconsistency, favoritism, and lack of accountability. Expectations are not applied evenly, and decisions often appear biased rather than based on performance or professionalism. This creates an environment that feels disorganized and, at times, unfair. More importantly, there is a noticeable gap in leadership. Effective supervisors should provide clear communication, support their staff, and handle concerns with professionalism. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience. Questions are often dismissed, feedback is not handled constructively, and there is little effort to ensure a cohesive or respectful workplace. I strongly encourage upper management to take a closer look at how this department is being run. With the right leadership, this could be a much more productive and positive environment--but as it stands, the supervision is a major issue. read more

It's taken me months to finish this review, because I was, & still am, grieving the death of my father. I give this place 0 stars- if I could, it would be negative stars- i had to put 1 star just to post this review. It's the worst care facility that I've experienced. My dad went in for rehab, but less than 24 hours later, I made them call 911, because he had a respiratory issue, & they left him like that overnight....pure negligence- even the firefighter said so! Needless to say, he was back in the hospital, then in hospice, then passed away a month later. I always wonder if he would still be alive if they had called 911 as soon as it happened. read more

I'm an agency worker and I rarely go to this facility. Today, and every day that I've been there, but today especially staff was EXTREMELY unhelpful ,rude and just plain mean. Management really needs to inservice the nursing staff on customer service and what it actually means to help someone. read more

Sooo... If you drive to the back back of Palolo Valley you'll find this very nice care home. Some parts are newly rennovated and it matches the scenic views of the valley. On a sunny day this place is like a scene from a postcard! Two stars because the nursing staff here are incredibly rude. The RN's are incredibly condescending. Especially the day shift RN's. I ask for directions or help finding a specific resident and I've been stared at, as if I was expected to know? I also noticed that they're short-staffed on CNA's (?). I mean most places are but the lack of teamwork I've seen on the floor is alarming. If 1 CNA needs help and goes looking for another CNA, they could be gone for upwards of 20+ minutes. It really puts the care of the residents on the back burner. Many things need to be fixed internally so that all the staff work together to provide good care. read more

I had such high anxiety sending my mother to an SNF facility but she really needed it after being debilitated in the hospital. She was so deconditioned after laying in bed for a few days. She was so weak and couldn't go home safely in that current physical state that she was in. From the moment that we entered through the front doors of PCH, their staff was very attentive and caring. They explained everything during the admission process. The transition from acute care to SNF was smooth. The Rooms were very clean and spacious. Some rooms were private but most were semiprivate. total of 2 patients per room. Did not have the feel or smell of an institution. Very nice new wing. Whenever there was a concern that mom had, the nursing staff would try and rectify the problem immediately. Shout out to Nurse Brandy. She works hard and took great care of her patients. I felt that mom was in great hands while Brandy was on shift. Also to all of the nurses and CNA's who don't get enough praise for all that you do. Donna and Mely who assisted the nurses in order to make mom's stay away from home easier. She had her physical and occupational therapy various times of the day. She actually enjoyed doing various exercises. They had tons of activities that the Kapuna's could participate in. Their activities coordinator ( Big Guy) had a vivacious personality that made the kapunas want to participate and have some fun. Get them out of their room into group activities. i wanted to acknowledge Keith the Handivan driver from Palolo Chinese Care Home. He helps to take my niece to doctors appointments, he is alway so kind and patience . He seems to enjoy his job and cares in helping people. it very hard to find sincere and caring workers. PCH are very fortunate to have a worker like him. I spoke to his supervisor Charles and he was also pleasantly nice,too. I rarely, go on yelp, did want to also acknowledge Darlene Nakayama, PCH CEO. I have dealt with Darlene several times and she has been a blessing to our family. During , our stressful situation,Darlene had hepled us get threw situations and made it less stressful for our family. We went to visit a friend who was in Day Care. I wanted to see the new renovations to this place. Wow, I am simply impressed by how all the buildings were so modern and clean. Our friend was in respite care which includes meals, snacks and entertainment. She goes home at 5 pm. You will be amazed after visiting there, too. read more

The Palolo Chinese Home is a hospice for seniors, located in the heart of Paolo Valley. They offer resident living or senior day care. Came to donate a couple of things, wheelchair, walker, cane, shower bench, bed tables, etc. I was taken on a tour of the upper facility and its so beautiful. Every where we went, the staff are very caring, engaging, skilled and smiling with the residents. There are private and semi-private rooms and all were clean and looks very comfortable. They have a chapel, daily activities, TV room and rehabilitation/therapy room. The residents can also walk around the beautiful campus where white and yellow ginger grow, listen to the river below and the birds in the trees. If you get tired, there's plenty of benches for you to sit and relax on. Or if you don't want to walk around the campus you can relax in the two courtyards that are beautifully decorated. read more

My maternal grandmother was here back in the early 2000's in the last years of her life. It was one of those retirement centers that is filled with compassion and care for the residents who are here. She had Parkinson's and had been deteriorating to the point where she was basically bed ridden until the final hour. My parents chose this place for my grandmother at the time, and she seemed to enjoy it. Located in the heart of Palolo Valley, the Palolo Chinese Home is a hospice for seniors, who want to live a more active lifestyles while socializing with people in their own age group and are of Chinese ethnicity. The Palolo Chinese Home's staff was warm and friendly to me and my family. The facility itself was pretty good and it can accommodate quite a lot of residents, although it's probably less than I could estimate at the time. There were plenty of things to do for the seniors though. I saw a bunch of residents watching television, or talking to each other of the day's events, or about their children's accolades, and even their grand children (in Chinese). The facility has a kitchen, where they prepare meals for the residents, so that's pretty great. I wonder if they allow residents to order out food from their favorite take out place? Probably everything is regulated to the core, so nothing out of the ordinary would take place. Going back here recently makes me remember my grandmother. Maybe in the next 30-40 years, I probably will be here too - if I don't go too soon with all these marathons I am running. Overall this place is recommended for those in need of the service. The facilities are exceptionally clean and staff is kind and professional. Our mom loved JR and Anna, they went above and beyond to make mom feel loved. Mom suffered from an extensive list of health issues which included advanced rheumatoid arthritis, the inability to stand or walk, heart problems, and dementia. I was at the facility daily at all hours of the day and the level of her care was always consistent. Since mom had a 20 year history of being in and out of rehabilitation and skilled care, I have first hand experience with the varying levels of care available. My grandfather (96 years old) was admitted here for respite care. For those who don't know what respite care is, it is temporary institutional care for your disabled loved one, to provide relief to the primary caregiver. From the day he checked in it was a nightmare. 1. There were way too many mistakes when it came to his medications. First of all, when I asked the nurse what medication he was giving my grandfather, he said he didn't know because he couldn't pronounce the name. WTF? Shouldn't you know what you are giving a patient? Secondly, they completely forgot a dosage of his pain meds, so my grandfather was screaming in pain every 2-3 minutes. If his meds are not administered on schedule, the pain will become so extreme that he begins screaming and crying in total agony. Thirdly, when I asked our nurse (and other nurses that was on staff) for his two medications, they gave me two different answers. Which just tells me that they don't know what they are doing there. One nurse said that his meds were out of stock and they were waiting on the pharmacy to deliver it. Now how can that be when we brought all of his meds with us? Then we were told that they weren't going to give it my grandfather because he was allergic to the two meds. Hello? He's been taking these 2 medications for weeks now. 2. His room was as hot as a sauna. There was no a/c flowing into his room even though the other side of the building and the hallways had a/c. When we asked to move him to another room, we got the run around. Even though there was clearly a lot of empty rooms in the place. 3. They forgot my grandfathers meals or would get it wrong. We would have to keep asking the RN or CNA when it was going to arrive and when it did actually arrive, the order was wrong. This happened at least 2 times and this was only the first day or so that he was there. If we hadn't been there visiting him and hounding the staff, I'm sure his meals wouldn't have come. 4. They only bathe the patients on MWF. So since my grandfather was admitted on a Friday morning, they told us we missed the opportunity and would get to it if they can. What kind of answer is that? So we ended up doing it ourselves on Saturday afternoon because my grandfather was so hot and sweaty from being in that sauna all day. Long story short, we ended up removing my grandfather from this care home BEFORE he even made it to the 5 days that he was scheduled to stay there. When you take your loved one to places like these, you would EXPECT that they will be in good hands and that you would feel completely comfortable, because you would be leaving your loved one with trained professionals. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE! I would not recommend this place to anyone. If my family and I had not been there visiting him, who knows what else could have gone wrong. read more

My 96-yr-old mother needed 24-hr assistance after returning home from a hospital stay in November 2020. We inquired about caregivers who could come to the home for hours the family could not cover. We learned about Palolo Chinese Home's in-home caregiving services. We were please to meet and work with a very efficient manager named Aiza Saribay. Aiza was empathetic, kind, responsive, and hardworking and was able to schedule caregiver coverage in weekly increments a week ahead of schedule. She responded quickly when emergencies arose, always finding someone to cover for extra hours the family could not. She was also diligent in sending caregiver notes and invoices to my mother's long-term care insurer so maximum benefits could be received, thereby providing partial financial relief for the cost of caregiving services. PCH caregivers were a pleasure to work with. They were prepared to do all that my mother's health conditions required and were able to incorporate changes in medication, physical assistance, and schedules according to doctors' advice. They arrived for their shifts on time, were polite and professional in dealing with the family, and wrote detailed notes about what took place on their shifts, which helped the family with continuation of care for subsequent shifts. We were able to communicate with caregivers via written notes which they dutifully reviewed and followed. In addition, caregivers worked with their positive and spirited personalities, often sharing stories of themselves, their families, and even singing and playing music for my mother. Their friendly and caring demeanor was just what my mother needed to feel safe and secure in the comfort of her home. PCH ultimately provided in-home care 13.5 hours/day, 7 days/week, which lasted into November 2021 when my mother transferred to a residential care home setting. I can't sufficiently thank Aiza and the other dedicated staff members of PCH in-home care service with whom we worked. They were able to help my mother and family immensely and kept our stress levels down. It was all well worth the expense! read more

My aunt got admitted at ilima station after needing further care, being discharged from the hospital she needed physical therapy.My cousin choose this place because it's closer to us as we live in Kaimuki area.There's a lot we didn't like about this place. 1. Upon admission we were not greeted at the front ,we just had the stare from the staff .Nurses took her weight and vital signs. 2. This facility has the same menu over and over as we help our aunt chose her meals.Plain and bland Baked fish & chicken ? all that this place can offer,so we always brought food for our aunt.She's not a picky eater but she didn't like the food serve here (it's that bad ).We told her aide that my aunty dislike the food and she just took the tray away without offering to order any alternative. 3.Staff FLORENDIS is extremely rude and unprofessional ,I don't know why she still have a job here.My aunt needed help to go to the bathroom so she pressed her call light button the nurse came in and ask what help she needed ,instead of taking my aunty to the bathroom she asked florendis who was sitting at a desk doing something on the computer. In a loud voice ,I heard Florendis tell the nurse 'that's not my patient ,why should I ,where is her cna that's why.' so the nurse came back to toilet her but it was too late my aunt had already made an accident in her pants.She was so embarrassed by it. These nurses here shouldn't work here if they're rude ,don't care about the patients and are here just for the money.Aunts aide was unfortunately on break on that time of this incident and I told her what happened,she mentions that Florendis is a teacher back in the Philippines and that just reminded me of the saying "you can be educated but not well mannered".Too bad I don't know my aunty's assigned nurse aide ,she didn't have an Id on . 4.I went around the facility and found a bathroom in the Lehua dining room,there was this very friendly and happy aide there I just wish this facility have more like her. I'm sure her patients doesn't experience what my aunt experienced. Our aunt is now home and a lot stronger ,thanks to all the therapists here. read more

First, unless your loved one needs skilled nursing care, I would not recommend this place at all. I wanted to give it 1 star, however because the place is really lovely and well maintained, and the staff is very friendly and tries hard, I upped my rating to 2 stars. My mother was admitted for physical therapy/rehab after having surgery to repair a broken hip after a fall. She could not walk and needed to be transferred from bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to toilet, etc. Basically she needed help with any of the activities of daily living that involved having to lift herself or stand. She WAS NOT there to have a doctor do blood tests or a dentist to come and check her teeth. My mother was poked and prodded day and night. As another reviewer posted about their loved one, my mother went from being a cognizant person before her fall, to a confused semi-dementia person in this nursing facility. She had also been put on a pureed diet in Straub hospital and didn't like eating that level of food, so she did not eat. She was supposed to have speech therapy to re-evaluate her diet level at PCH but their speech therapist was on leave so she was not evaluated until almost the end of her stay there. Since she did not want to eat the pureed diet she lost 10 pounds in a week. This prompted another round of blood tests to see if anything was medically wrong with her. They didn't find anything. My mother had started to make a little bit of progress in walking but the loss of this much weight made her very weak and unable to continue physical therapy, which is what she was there for in the first place. What was supposed to have been a short-term physical therapy turned out to be a few days short of 6 weeks. She was adamant to leave there and I had to sign papers to take her out against doctors orders (and they really tried to fight me on this. They really wanted to keep her in against her wishes.) She left there with semi-dementia and about 13 pounds lighter than when she entered PCH, and she still couldn't walk which was the whole point. It's my opinion that PCH will keep your loved one in there as long as possible so that they can do a bunch of unnecessary tests and in-facility doctor's visits etc in order to keep billing insurance. The staff try hard but it is large and bureaucratic and I think they have too many patients for the staff to handle. Everything that gets done involves a "meeting" between various departments. My mother is incontinent and does not like sleeping in a wet diaper, but she said it was difficult to get anyone to take her to the bathroom at night. Unless your loved one really needs intense skilled nursing care I would not recommend PCH. read more

My husband was 85 years old and has Lewy Body Dementia. He stayed at PCH for 4 days of respite care in October 2022. We were reluctant to leave him because it would be he's first time and he wasn't sure if he would like to be there. It broke my heart to leave him. When I called to check on him the following day, i was so relieved that he was fine. He liked the staff. He enjoyed his roommate, watched volleyball together. He was happy that he had an assigned dining table. And, which was very important to him, he loved the food. We were able to send in our selection ahead of his stay. He said he even got some ice cream when he asked for it. He laughed that they kept a close watch of him when he took a little walk out of his room. And, guess what? He's now an 86 year old with Lewy Body Dementia and will be staying five days in April 2023. I'm so happy that we found PCH. We're thankful that he doesn't mind staying here for respite care. My 95 year old father-in-law fell and broke his ribs a couple of months ago. After a week at Queens, he could be discharged but needed a place to rehab. The case worker suggested a few places with open beds and PCH was one of them. We live just a couple minutes away so we thought it would be the most convenient. We are so glad that we chose this facility. The staff are very caring, skilled and kept us informed about Dad's progress. The home is clean and comfortable. There are daily activities and the food looks tasty. Dad even dressed up for Halloween. Unfortunately Dad took a turn for the worst and is now in Hospice care but still at PCH. We are very grateful we found this place to care for Dad as he lives out his last days of his life. read more

This is a review of the Senior Daycare. Just beware that your loved one with dementia can and might be discharged because the Daycare Administrator feels that your loved one is being combative by squeezing their hand. I was not able to have a one week grace period to find alternative daycare for my father and we didn't have any warning either to try to correct his behavior through either medication or redirecting him which the staff can do. The administrator is lucky that I have the holiday and the weekend to find an alternative care for him. I work a full time job and take sometime off to watch him during the day but. Also if your loved one is sensitive to loud talking there is patient who is very loud when they talk and they talk nonstop the staff will call you to come and pick up your loved one. Don't get me wrong I do love the staff and they understand my situation with my father this is direct at the Daycare administrator. read more

My dad has only been here for a few days, as it was recommended by the hospital Therapist for him to go to a skilled nursing facility for a couple of weeks, just to get stronger. I chose this place because it's only a couple of minutes way and so far I am not disappointed at all! Everyone is SO friendly and helpful. Back in the day, I remember coming to this place when I was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels. I didn't go roaming around the campus, but from what I remember, it looks much better than before. As a Hospice employee I make visits to patience's five days a week for the past 4 years, I observe all staff who come in contact with Patient Care to certainly practice the seven principle's of care: 1.Respect 2.Privacy 3.Communication 4.Independence 5. If you care about your family member, please don't have them stay here. My 85 year old mom stayed here for PT/rehab after her leg muscles became very weak after staying at a hospital. I met with intake personnel and was told that the physical therapist would meet with mom that day (she was admitted at 10:30 A.M.) to evaluate her and that they would determine what kind of PT she would need. I talked to mom the next day at about lunch time and no one had come to see her. What?! So I called the number I was given and was told that someone would be in to evaluate mom that afternoon. That night when we went to see mom we found out that no one had come to see her. I couldn't believe it. She had now lost two days and her legs were getting weaker because the only walking she did was to use the bathroom and to go to the dining room. I talked to them again and was again told that someone would evaluate her tomorrow. The next day (day 3) after lunch I found out that still no one had come to see her to evaluate her. Unbelievable! Mom called me later that afternoon to tell me that she wanted to come home because she felt she was getting weaker the longer she stayed there. I went down right away and talked to the nurse in charge to let her know that we were taking mom home. Only then did management get involved. The manager apologized and said to give them another chance and that even though it was late in the day that they would try to get the physical therapist to come in to evaluate her. Of course we said, No thank you !" I can't imagine how it is for patients who don't have any family advocates. It's scary and what happened to mom shouldn't happen to anyone. read more

My relative was sent to hospice care. As you would expect, it was a difficult situation. The staff at Palolo was courteous and helpful. I think in this kind of situation, both the patients and visitors are very sensitive so I appreciated any kind gesture from the staff. I feel that this place had a higher quality of care and more compassion than another, unnamed hospice place. Would definitely recommend Palolo Chinese home. Ps it is clean and organized. There was a great need for me to find the right place for my mom. She had been deteriorating due to her chronic diseases and age. I was so happy and glad that I was referred to this place. The staff here was warm and friendly. The doctor came twice a week. Activity staff lined up many performers. My mom loved their food too.
