Things to consider: Staff is phenomenal, very compassionate, and hands-on. You can tell everyone here loves making a difference. The staff on all levels (CNA, nurses, kitchen team to case manager) they are all hard-working, and very good at their position... -- BUT... the downside is: you will feel like you are in prison from their isolation policy for all new patients (no visitors, or leaving your room for the the first few DAYS) to the food choices (you will want your own groceries) Many people have commented about these two things especially. In addition, you can hear other patients challenges from your room/zero sound proofing-- that part is terrible!! The call button system to have assistance in your room is like a clanging alarm, and sounds all day long through the hallways - again, not updated, and intrusive to others. The decor is all beige/older/70s style, and very depressing. Just know you have to be very strong-minded, pray a lot to the good LoRD, and everyday you will wonder how quick you can get out of here- sad to say. The things I have mentioned are definitely items I wish I had known about -- BEFORE making a decision on where to receive extended care. My son was in here after a coma the was paralyzed, at first & at that time we HATED this place! We had a few problems, mostly with a few of the nurses, one took his call button away, one even slapped him! (Yes she slapped & Assaulted him! ) Kindred took care of all problems as soon as they came! Me & my wife, were new at dealing with this kind of stuff! Were grateful to Kindred for helping us through this tough time in our lives with our son! Good place, good care. (Good place to start! We were totally very new to dealing with something like this!) I spent a week here for follow-up care after a medical alcohol detox and I have to say that this facility is amazing on every level! The entire staff is top-notch and always willing to help! Everyone from my physical therapist, occupational Therapist and speech therapist, nurses, nursing assistants and administrative staff were so professional caring and very helpful! The always took the time to make sure I was on the right track and did whatever they needed to do to make sure I was! If you are looking for a short term or longer term facility to get you on the right path, either from alcohols, drugs, or many other ailments, this is definitely the place to go!!! read more

The afternoon of Wednesday, August 9th my 35-year-old son was transferred to the 1920 High Street location with a brain injury and several broken bones. The staff was not prepared for our arrival, didn't know he had a brain injury, and offered me a TV remote amongst all the chaos. RN (by the name of Queen) was taking notes from LIFE TRANSPORT on her glove, he was moved to the bed and shortly after a careless CNA comes in to take blood holding a fully open needle, he couldn't get a vein as another CNA was pointing him towards where to try next. They had the wrong leg as broken. Respiratory (by the name of LEE) suction his traech tube with little to no skill or training, I see my son's face turn beet red, and pull himself up from the bed in pain. Lee yells at him for biting on the tube. I notice the packing of a hole on the left side of his neck the size of a nickel has fallen out. The strap to the trach tube is rubbing against the hole and sweat is dripping down his head profusely and I'm stopping it with a bed sheet. Twice I ran to the nurse's station to get help and it was a good 30 minutes before Lee returns to handle my son as a car in the shop, ripping bandages and hair off, my son is saying OW! I asked for wound care none were available. I was told tomorrow sometime. I asked for a doctor, not available, will be in on Friday. After several attempts to figure out who is in charge with medical knowledge, the arrogant on-call doctor stands with his arms crossed and tells me he's not familiar with new admits and that he oversees the entire hospital for emergencies only. I asked why the oxygen tube was laying on the floor and not connected, he said he didn't know. He watched as I walked around the bed, took the cover off the wheely pole thing that holds IVs, picked the tube up off the floor, and connected it. The feeding tube has been dangling from his nose and not connected for hours now, they call an x-ray to see where it's connected. The bandages Lee put on are beginning to fall off, not correct for this use. A trip to Walmart the next day for wipes and Coban wrap. Thursday morning my son had a puddle of vomit/spew on his shoulder that had been running down his back, sheets and gown soaking wet. Still, no doctor has told me the care plan. The horror continues, missed meds, stimulants given in the evening, and so on. I tried calling the admin department several times throughout this nightmare, the phone rang and rang, no answer. Once in a while, I'm transferred to a VM. Called the compliance department at headquarters, but no phone calls returned. Thankfully we moved to Vibra on Saturday. This House Of Horrors starts from the administration and trickles down. I think it's safe to assume that any doctor working here is only doing so for a good Social Stamp rating. My wife has a 20 year friend who is currently very close to passing. Arrangements were made for all of her friends to visit her at Kindred Hospital Denver tonight with arrangements for after hours visitations. However, my wife was turned away by an asshole security guy who didn't care. He also called a female supervisor who also didn't give a fuck and rejected my wife's pleas. Now my wife will never get to say goodbye to a longtime friend. Terrible people, terrible company. read more

My husband contracted West Nile Virus and spent 20 months here at Kindred. The entire staff could not have been nicer or more attentive. They took care of him very well. He cannot move or hear but everyone there made him feel safe and taken care of. From the Doctors, to Nursing staff to Care Management they were wonderful. DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE FOR LTAC!!! My 19 yr old son was sent here after 41 days in the ICU. He was on a ventilator and was in a coma. We had no choice but to pick from this or 2 other LTACs. He was admitted to the 3rd floor, the first 48 hours proved how awful the rest of his 62 day stay would be. The place is old and outdated, appears dirty, the elevators are dark and barely run, and the public bathroom was so gross! After my son was "bathed" (wiped down with wipes) we were allowed in the room. The ventilator he was on was scarce compared to the ICU, within the first day, the nurse in his room didn't connect his Gtube correctly causing my son to become soaked in formula, which is exremly dangeous becuase he had open wounds. They didnt come in for almost 2 hours to check on him. The same nurse didnt connect his catheter correctly multiple times, causin him to urinate on himself several times. Everytime anything happened WE had to notify someone. My son was supposed to take meds every 4 hours and it wasnt being administered and weight shifted every 2, when brought to the attention of the nurse she said "we only weight shift and administer meds on shift change" !!!!! When they changed his urine soaked linens the threw everything on the floor including his pillows, left the soiled ones there and put the pillows back on his bed!!!! My son was sent back to the ICU within 48 hours with signs of sepsis! When I brought the issues up to the administrator, they looked in his chart and said that he was administered his meds on time and weight shifted. I was in the room the entire time, so the staff lied in his chart! that was just the first 48 hours. If you cannot sit with your loved ones, advocate for them, know there scheduled meds and weight shifts DO NOT aspect them to get better here, if we were not there my son was poorly looked after. My husband and I sat with our son from 9am to 9pm every single day he was there. When he was readmitted after his trip back to the ICU (where I begged them not to send us back there) he was admitted the 4th floor ICU, he was put in a room shared with 2 others. A nurse is to stay in that room at all times, didn't happen because they are short staffed. My son contracted MrSA from the patient next to him. We were not told he had this contagious infection until we came in and were instructed to dress in protective gear from head to toe. This is mainly spread by medical staff, I watched them take on and off the gear comng from each patient but bring the rollabout witht he thermometer and same pen for each patient which they touched with dirty gloves and did NOT wipe down after each use. Dr. Yarnell was barbaric, was extremely aggressive with my son who had suffered many injuries. After seeing him 3 times, a total of 9 minutes combined, my husband timed him, he said there is nothing else he can do for our son. He said that the staff was the only reason why he was alive!!! After this I immediately worked day in and day out to have him transfered out of that place!!!! He was admitted to Craig Hospital after this and has made immeasurable gains!!!! I do however, want to thank Pepper, she was a part of the respiratory team. When she was working, she made sure he was taken care of. My dad never even had a blanket on him in that COLD place . 4thfloor. And it was cold. I went in there daily damn near 15 years ago, and every time I went in there he would have no blankets or coverings on him. I put them on him because there were on floor mostly but he couldn't move , so he didn't move them Or knock them off , and they were too far away to just slip off. I would go down to eat at their restaurant on first floor. come back up and sheet and blankets were on floor again. That is all the care I noticed when I was there. Someone almost ready to die and no heat can will kill you faster. I think it was a place for people to die. If your not in good shape medically don't put your relative in there. If he /she is critical they'll help make it worse. It isn't a care place it is just a place to lay down, and they don't even let you do that peacefully. I got more story but this simple basics care and abuse I just wanted to point out. They B.S. bragged so much about how great a hospitol they were. Their job is to extinguish life. Plain and simple. They do the dirty work hospitals don't want their name on. Beware of this COLD place. Keep an eye on your relatives if they go in because this place won't only not do it , but speed up the outcome of death faster. That is what Kindred does. Simple as that. Their job is to extinguish ones who didn't choose hospice on their own to die.Want to die voluntarily. They'll make that choice for you . A middle man sort of speak. They do the work others don't want to do.Or won't do publicly. Dying is a dirty business . Someone got to do it if the ball don't roll in that direction fast enough. Be prepared for this if your relative isn't looking like they'll make it out alive here or anywhere else. It is the coldest place I've ever been to . Hospitol or otherwise. . They good there. A dump. My brother was there for rehab was dirty and the nurses 4eally did not seem to care. This Holiday Inn Hospital was horrible. How do you check a patient in without getting an emergency contact number? He was there for 2 days when I came in to see him. When I asked for his room number I was asked if I had his wife's tn!!!!! And the through the wall HVAC units?? When the recovering patient has to ask the nurse to turn on and off the heat!?!?!? Unacceptable! read more

First let me say I would never go back to a Kindred Care hospital again. After spending 50 days at University hospital I was transferred to Kindred for further treatment of COVID-19. What a mistake. The night nurse didn't want to deal with me so she tied me to the bed so many times my sister, who visited me daily, finally said enough is enough and got me out of there. This is after I, according to my brother, asphyxiated 3 times according to one of the doctors. They never gave me one drop of water and never fed me an ounce of food even though I begged them for some. Like I said, I would never go back to that dump. read more

We moved my mom here after a bad experience at Select Specialty in Denver, we chose this location because they have great respiratory therapy tools, trach gear (speaking valves that are easier to use than the cap), and a physical therapy room. They also offer a personal air conditioner in every room, so you can adjust the temperature of your room easily. The nurses have been very attentive, and kind. They get her out of bed every day, they check her blood gases regularly, and they do not over-medicate her. They have gotten her off of all narcotic pain medications, and moved toward less dramatic options. The doctor here is quick when he comes in the room, but very knowledgeable and he really puts thought into his treatment choices. Actually, he did a few very, very kind things for my mom, he went above and beyond his call, and it meant the world to my mom, it brought her spirits up! The attending neurologists are awesome too! I would recommend this place, highly. If you don't come here, at least go, in person and tour the options! I didn't think it was necessary, and I regret not placing her here first. read more

While Kindred has nice staff, a lot of them are very unprofessional. They don't seem to care about the patients that cannot speak for themselves. Not only did they overdose my dad twice on Baclofen, they neglected him the entire time he was there. Rehab hospital means REHAB should be taking place which never happened when I was there. I believe Kindred staff contributed to my dads decline and death because of how careless the staff is. How do you overdose someone twice? read more

You're welcome Eric B., I would like to give special recognition to the following individuals who really stand out in my mind as being especially instrumental in the processes of care and comfort that took place during our stay: Dr Yeager - who always went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure I understood what was going on with the care and treatment for my son, even coming in late night to calm and soothe me and my son during difficult times. He made himself easily available and carries such a calm, confident, knowledgeable presence that makes you feel safe in his care. Dr Yeager leads by example. Jen PA-C - Is Dr Yeager's right hand, what a team! She also carries herself with such grace and competence that you just feel safe in their care and it helps take the fear out of the unknown and uncertainty of all that is going on. Miguel PA-C - He checked on us regularly, also bringing an air of confidence that makes such a difference. The Nurses and CNA's that stood out for their kind care were Richard (my fav), Dawn (my sons fav), Shawn, Jess & others, Martha in wound care took the time to explain and show us everything just in case we would have to do it at home, Charles stays positive, always smiling; works so hard making sure we had what we needed to be comfortable, Vilma who is stern but very caring and competent. The young lady that watches the cameras in special rooms to help ensure patient safety for fall risk patients, she was so helpful with her watchful eye and even worked as a sitter with my son one day after her shift. Tia the nursing supervisor who cares so much for the people that work with her, you can feel the love and concern for her people! Therapists that really stood out were Stevie and Kim in Physical & Occupational therapy who worked with my son from a beginning point of building endurance just to sit up in bed and hold his head up; all the way up to going to the bathroom alone, showering alone, bathroom safety, walking independently, helping him find balance, building endurance. They addressed every concern I had and worked with us both to help him become independent. Thank you for the consistent and professional manor in which you conducted yourself. Troy who rounded every hour making sure my sons trach was functioning properly, was clean, suctioning whenever necessary and making sure we had enough supplies. He brought comfort and stability to us at a very scary time with bells and whistles going off all the time. Terry in Speech therapy is so consistent; reassuring and always working hard to change things up so it doesn't get boring, she would even leave homework and constantly challenged my son to do better never allowing lazy behavior. She is kind in all of her ways, thank you. The X-Ray man that whose name I do not remember but he was called to come in late at night several times because my son had pulled out his NG tube. He always showed up quickly, never complaining about the hour. He moved quickly and efficiently through the task so that my son could once again get his medications and food. Such a kind and gentle man. Kudos to the team for never skipping a step or taking chances with my sons care. God bless. Housekeeping & Food Service members that stood out were Martha and Rigo who team to always keep our room sanitary, they work hard, quick, efficient and always with a big smile that brightened our day. I think we made more than our fair share of messes and they always helped us through. Ermelinda is an angel, she has the sweetest manor about her as she does her work, she took time to pray with us and brought such comfort to our situation, I believe in the power of prayer and I thank you. There were food servers that I only know by face but I will not forget how their kindness warmed my heart, thank you for caring about me and my son, also for feeding us delicious, nutritious food and plenty of it. Gloria is the supervisor in this dept, I remember how well she leads and how her team members show respect and care for her. Such a well rounded team, you are blessed to have so many wonderful people working for you and changing peoples lives for the better everyday, they work so well together and compliment each other, I sincerely thank you all. read more

I would not take my love one her becasue they are horrible care takers. The rooms are dirty. The nurses and doctors do not know what to do. My father was there for 5 days and in those 5 days they drew blood from his dialysis port which is not ok as well as they did not have a ventilator on hand when my dad went into shock. My husband spent over 30 days at Kindred Denver-mid September to the end of October. He was on a ventilator and trach. One day his oxygen levels decreased, the alarm went off and 6 staff members came running into his room. I knew he was at the right place for care when they stayed after getting his oxygen levels back up and tried to figure out why he dropped. After spending 7 weeks in critical care at a local hospital, I was moved to Kindred to really start my recovery. I had to relearn how to walk and care for myself. It was hard work. I was fortunate to have a strong team of professionals caring for me. Gale Smith, Gianna Woo, Ron Ritenour and Theresa Lamberson were instrumental in my care. It took time and effort on my part and theirs. It was not an easy road. After 10 weeks I was discharged and I continued my recovery at home. I will never forget Gale, Gianna, Ron and Theresa. Often times when I'm downtown I will pop in to visit with them and say thank you again and again. I can never repay what they did to put my life back together. I was very pleased with my stay at Kindred Hospital. My wife researched our options for extended care facilities anticipating my release from Longmont United Hospital. I was in no condition to make such a decision on my own. Although I felt helpless, I found the staff to be friendly, supportive, and able to keep me comfortable and as I told my wife, they're ether really sincere or they're darned good actors (read on). They got me off the feeding tube, and eating solid food. They got me off of the trach tube which enabled me to talk. The Physical Therapists pushed, (but not too hard) because that's the only way I was ever going to get out of that bed. When I was released from Kindred I wasn't at 100%, but I was starting to gain weight, able to get around on my own with a walker and when I finally got home, the first Physical Therapist that came to the house was surprised that I wasn't bedridden. I recently attended a High-Tea event at Kindred where former patients are invited to mingle with staff & other former patients, just to see how everyone is doing. I walked in on my own without even a cane. Bob, you're walking on your own! I'm no one considering the thousands of people they must care for every year, but I could tell from the teary eyes that they weren't acting, they were genuinely happy for me and my recovery. I made it a point to shake every hand, offer a big hug and literally pat every back in an effort to express my gratitude for the care they provided to get me back on my feet. Bob C read more

My best friend was shuttled here from Rose ICU in the last few months as part of a longer-term "after-care" facility, recovering from nearly lethal pneumonia. He developed ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome), which is a really ugly aftereffect possible from pneumonia (think fallout after an initial nuke bomb drops) and required specialty care. Kindred, in a very pleasant area in City Park West, specializes in respiratory, wound and brain injury care for patients after they've gotten stabilized/aren't going to die anymore, and heals them up the rest of the way. The staffers here are amazing, God bless em all, very kind and attentive and thorough. The rooms seem fairly comfortable. Fairly small TVs, but what are ya gonna do *shrug*. Huge windows with beautiful views, and good climate control, esp, necessary in the summertime. This facility gets the thumbs-up in my book, and seeing what my friend went through, I'd definitely recommend them for extended aftercare needs for anyone leaving a primary hospital ICU-type environment. read more

My husband had a motorcycle accident and after 2 weeks in the ICU he was moved to Kindred Hospital in Denver. I was told this is a "step down" ICU. My husband needed to be watched, he has a severe Brain Injury. He kept trying to get up out of the chair they had him in and his alarm was beeping, no one was coming into calm him down. Instead I witnessed the worse attitude from the nurse on duty, I heard her scream at my husband to sit down in his chair, 3 or 4 times. 3 days after he was admitted, he fell and hit his head. No one was watching him. They had to transport him to St. Joseph's hospital for a CT scan. A few days later, he fell again! another trip to St. Joseph's for a CT. They said they would call me when he got back, I never heard from anyone until 3:30am. Seems they had to wait for an ambulance to bring him back. I didn't know if my husband was in a room, or just waiting in the hallway. I asked the case manager who has to pay for the CT's, she said it's covered under Kindred. I received 4 bills from the ambulance service for both trips to the other hospital.($1,100.00 to go a block) And then received the bills from St. Joseph's for the scans. the second fall had an extra cost for the second emergency room that he waited in for the ambulance. When I asked about the falls, I was told there wasn't a report written up yet, and the second time I was told the nurse let go of him because she thought he was going to hit her. she was on his left side, his right side had 9 broken ribs, broken collar bone, and broken shoulder plate. he couldn't lift anything high enough to hit anyone. and the nurse was sore from twisting to catch herself, and that they might have to send her home for the rest of her shift. I'm sorry, but this hospital should review how they handle patients, and review with the nurses on how to be polite and gentle with patients and their families. As a speech intern at Kindred Hospital this summer, I was able to fully appreciate the excellent care provided by this facility from a medical staff perspective. The teamwork between the rehab staff (OT, PT and speech) was highly evident based upon how well they worked together to provide a well-coordinated care to their patients. The team also worked well and closely with the rest of the hospital staff (doctors, nurses, CNAs, dietary, etc.) to help ensure that everyone was kept abreast of their patients' status. Perhaps what stood out for me as an intern was the chance to learn from such knowledgeable staff about highly complex medical cases but also to see, first hand, their strong sense of compassion for their patients and families. My mother was admitted to Kindred after a 2 week stay in the ICU at Rose Hospital. We were told she would get great care here and she would progress more quickly to be able to get home. I checked the website and looked at the slide show online. Place looked beautiful so I reassured my mom that it would be wonderful for her. When we arrived I felt like I'd been kicked in the gut. The hospital was vaguely like the pictures online- I'm guessing they were taken 15 years ago maybe. Now the place is tattered and dirty and does not look new and sparkly clean like the website leads you to believe. Still I figured surely the hospital wouldn't have sent her here if it wasn't good. Well, it was like a living nightmare. Literally. I have advised my friends and family not to send anyone they love to this facility. The nursing staff seemed tired and defensive. I had to introduce myself and my mom to them when my mom arrived, and to almost all the new people who came in to my mom's room. When my mom couldn't sleep they yelled at her during the night ( I know this because we hired private sitters to stay with my mom since she had trouble sleeping at the other hospital). We also found out that they also had not been giving my mother the correct medicines. This is a serious mistake! They don't have CT scans here, and although they are across the street from St. Lukes, for some reason they transferred my mom back to Rose to get a CT scan 2 days after she arrived. Thankfully they did so because when she got back there we told the ambulance drivers they did not have permission to transport her back to Kindred. It was awful that I had to fight and be the advocate for my mom, but I am glad I was able to do so. It made me so sad to think of the other people who are stuck there with no one to help them. The PT and OT and the infectious disease doctor there were great, but other than the 3 of them it was awful! Check the place out in person before you take someone you love there.
