I took my 13 year old and his dog for training. My son's father had passed away and he was at an age where I thought responsibility for a living creature would be a good experience for him. From the first class the instructor was on a power trip. Instead of instruction, only received criticism; the food we fed was wrong, but he did not recommend a new food. He hated the collar and tossed it. Put on another one said he would charge us. ( he didn't). The dog has died the child is grown. I name all of three of us as finishing this class because at Kindred Souls, the owners take part in their dog's training. Previously, we brought our French Bulldog, Harlow, to basic obedience classes at Kindred Souls nearly seven years ago; and we knew as soon as we got a new pup, Kindred Souls would be our first stop. Pete is truly incredible at his job and has such an understanding of all types dogs. We truly appreciate how he puts the responsibility on the owners and his program is set up to set the owners and dogs up for success- as long as you listen to what Pete is teaching you. Let me preface my review with this: I ended up leaving The Hungry Puppy's training because the trainer's soft and cookie cutter way of training wasn't going to work for my newly rescued Rottie mix, Rocky. My girlfriend and I dropped in at Kindred Souls and Pete met with us personally after getting a recommendation from a friend. We immediately enrolled after discussing what our goals were for Rocky. After 8 weeks of training, our once dominant and rambunctious Rocky just graduated as most improved! He is calmer, more attentive, and has all of his basic obedience down. Pete cares about the dogs over everything. I've noticed people calling him brash - but from what I saw those who were frustrated with him were people who didn't do their homework, didn't listen to Pete's advice, and ultimately had the unfortunate belief that going to a class one hour a week for 8 weeks would be a cure all. Pete's training style is NOT brash. It is kind with a real sense of urgency. The sense of urgency is there because no one wants a dog to end up in a shelter! You HAVE to work your dog outside of a one hour a week controlled environment. Pete and his staff work with every dog individually and will meet with you throughout the week if you need extra support, at no additional cost. Having just completed Pete's Basic Obedience class with our boxer today, I can report that the training at this facility is outstanding. We came in with an incorrigibly bouncy and distractible dog who was next to impossible to walk and just generally "too much" in most circumstances. She knew a few commands, but easily set them aside with the smallest distraction. With Pete's help, we were able to develop a clearer relationship with our dog, where she now knows we are in charge and we will take care of her. That is the fundamental thing we worked on in the first few weeks, and from there everything else started falling in place. We came to understand the importance of consistency in a whole new way too. Pete tailors his approach for each family depending on the dog (our boxer required different handling from the timid poodle in our class, for instance), which is fantastic. I had been concerned about going to a facility that would take the fun out of our dog in the service of getting her under control, but I needn't have worried. Now that we have a better handle on her, we can enjoy our happy dog even more than before. As soon as we can, we plan to return for the Distraction class to further what we have already learned. The results are well worth the expense. And PS: Pete absolutely does not hate boxers, as some nut job has posted here. I use to go to Kindred Souls a number of years ago with my two Papillions, both who finished 1st place in Pete's obedience classes. He was by far the best dog instructor I ever trained under. I live near Princeton and went to a number of schools in my area ,but decided driving 40 miles down to Pete at Kindred Souls was a better option. Pete has always had a connection to every dog he met, small or large. Animals are an amazing judge of character. My dogs are 6 and 8 lbs and even with all the larger dogs in class, I always felt safe working the the routines as Pete was always in control and monitored the class with a watchful eye. I am a number of years outside obedience as my dogs are older now but have recommended Pete to a number of friends who added puppies to their households. Just visited this Sat for my first time in a long time...how great it was to be back. I sat there watching Pete work with everyone and their dogs. We started the Basic Obedience class at Kindred Souls 5 weeks ago (this is an 8 week class) I am absolutely amazed at the positive changes in our dog. Fala is a 10 month old lab mix and has a TON of energy. We had trouble with everything - sitting, staying, down - the only thing she was good at before Kindred Souls was sitting before eating. She now walks nicely on a leash, sits when I stop, sits on command, lies down on command. We still have some work to do, but the step by step guidance in the classes as well as the clear homework instructions have helped us with Fala so much. She is so well behaved now - we went to another puppy class at another place and Fala was the worst behaved dog in the class - the tools we were given weren't working for us. After this class I feel we have a great foundation - it takes some work but it is well worth it! I highly recommend this center and will be looking at other classes once we finish the Basic Obedience. read more

We came here to check out the puppy kindergarten classes before committing to regular obedience training. If you're looking for a force free, positive reinforcement experience this is not the place for you. Our experience was off-putting from the second we walked in as Pete yelled at me for how I was interacting with my dog. No correction, no explanation, nothing. Just a pretty brash "STOP DOING THAT!" His criticism didn't stop throughout the entire orientation prior to the class, and when we returned the following week, he had a new target. Look, I have thick skin, so I wasn't upset by his criticism. I just find his whole tough guy schtick to be unnecessary. People are coming to you for help, so help them instead of yelling at them. I spoke to several other people during the kindergarten class who also found his attitude to be unpleasant and in some cases frightening, but they stayed at the recommendation of others. Now, "Why didn't you talk to him? Why didn't you tell him this is how you felt?" Because it's pretty clear this is his angle and what makes him appealing to others. It's also obvious that he's gotten this feedback before and sees no reason to change himself, which is his decision. He seems to be doing just fine, but I will be taking my business elsewhere. Oh, one star for the $15 puppy kindergarten drop-ins. Wish more places had open drop-ins for socialization like Kindred Souls, but their basic training and enrichment time is tainted by forcing your dog to do things it isn't quite ready to do. hopefully my review isn't filtered like all the other 4 and 5 star reviews. this place was great for our rescue. she is a very timid dog, and pete was fantastic with her. the owner/trainer has a very strong personality which can take some getting used to. he is very gruff and isn't afraid to yell at the OWNERS (not the dogs) if it's obvious that the owners aren't doing the homework. pete is very specific about saying that we are there to make your dog the best dog that he/she can be, and not to make your dog a perfect dog like border collies (who are very very smart). i would not hesitate to bring our dog here again for the next class except that we moved so it's a bit far. don't come here if you are not a motivated dog owner. read more

I have two Goldendoodles, Callie is 10 and Molly is 3. Two months ago Molly started showing aggression toward Callie and it quickly escalated. The fights were freightening and Callie soon became so afraid She didn't want to be in the house. We had seen a few trainers and their methods just seem to add fuel to the fire. Our black Labrador, "Bo" (Boaz), just completed Kindred Souls Basic Obedience class tonight and was awarded the 1st place blue ribbon. Pete recommended Bo begin training to become a "Therapy" dog, visiting hospitals, nursing homes, schools, etc. This is the third time we have brought one of our dogs to Kindred Souls for training. We return because of the excellent training Pete provides, both to the dogs and "owners"(lol). Although there are certain basic training techniques, Pete takes into consideration the breed and personality of each dog and adapts training accordingly for each individual dog, yet not sacrificing their safety or well-being. I might add that the training facility is clean and free of any bad odors. This, in itself, is amazing considering the number of dogs attending classes each day. We're so glad we brought Gibby to Kindred Souls for obedience classes! As a 1 1/2 year old traumatized rescue, our terrier shihtzu-poo mix was too scared at first to even listen to anything. My dog actually looked forward to our Wednesday night class and I could tell the process was rewarding for him as well. It was a bonding experience and gave us set time at home to do our "homework" and just give something else to do other then the typical fetch sessions afterwork. Where do we even begin?? In order to understand the full story, it's important to know the background first. My wife and I adopted a 1 Year Old Australian Shepherd about 5 months ago. After about a week with our new pup, we started experiencing some major issues, which led to multiple biting incidents in our house. We were honestly just so distraught when all of this started happening. With the history of his behavior, we knew that if we gave up on him his chances for re-adoption would be slim. We really felt like we were his only hope, and we just couldn't give up on him... But we really didn't know where to begin since we had never experienced issues like this with our other dogs. This is where Kindred Souls came in.... I honestly cannot say enough about our experience with Pete. We started with a private session and Pete went through everything with us in such detail. We really didn't realize how the smallest little details can make such a big difference to the dog! I think that the one word that best describes Pete's approach is passion. He has such a love for the dogs that he works with, and is ALWAYS willing to help. During our worst stretch of weeks with Tito, I was calling Pete 2 / 3 times a week with questions and updates on our dog's progress, and I cannot remember a single occasion where Pete didn't have time for us. Pete even stayed after class with us on multiple occasions to do some one on one work with our dog and to make sure that he was continuing to progress. The other important thing to note is that this man knows what he's doing when it comes to dogs! We just completed the Basic Obedience class at Kindred Souls, and our dog graduated with honors! We literally went from not knowing if we would be able to keep our new dog, to now having him graduate obedience 1 with honors. I can't say it enough, Pete knows what he is doing when it comes to dogs. All being said, our dog still has a long road ahead of him.. but the most important thing is that my wife and I now have the confidence that we can work through this. If you listen in on the instruction at class, and practice the homework at home in between classes, there is no doubt that you and your dog will see results. Pete's training methods are fair and easy to replicate in your own home. Our dog had a pretty significant set of issues going into the training, and Pete was still able to give us plan tailored to our specific situation. I wouldn't even give it a star. This place was awful. Barbaric training methods. We took our newly rescued dog. We wanted more of a social setting of training for her, that's why we picked a class. There were about 14 dogs, when it was supposed to be 8-10. They are all there for basic obiedience. He manhandled every dog he touched. It was like breaking the poor dog's spirit. He also has class for an hour. I dont really know of a dog or person that would want to sit and hear him for that long. And then go through the exerises. There are other ways to get a well mannered dog than putting fear into them. It actually doesn't work. We pulled our dog out and went somewhere else. Thank god! We brought our dog for training and the trainer told us he did not like our breed. He made that very clear when he constantly yelled and man handled our dog. When our dog did respond to commands he never praised. He praised all the other dogs when they did exactly the same thing our dog did. So if you have a boxer don't go to Kindred Souls. You said."The reason smaller dogs get away with more than larger dogs is because "They're so cute but you wouldn't allow you larger dogs to jump all over your company why should they". I've had my rescue Delphina for two and a half years. The way that we met each other is nothing short of a miracle. She was found wandering the streets of Sedona, Arizona by a police officer. Delphina knew nothing but fear when she came home to me. They think that she was about four years old at the time. Having prior experience with Pete at Kindred Souls Canine Center, I signed up for the Basic Obedience Class. It was in this class that Delphina and I slowly became a team. As I remember, we actually did about 18 weeks of Basic Obedience. Pete never gave up on my little girl! He suggested that we also visit other classes so that Delphina could become used to being around other dogs. I did the homework that Pete recommended and visited the other classes in the evenings so that Delphina could be in the company of other dogs. Delphina is extremely smart and learned her commands. There isn't a day that goes by when I'm putting Delphina in a sit-stay that I don't think of Pete. Because, like the good little girl she is, she will sit and stay until I tell her to come! That alone is a gift when I'm home and have to go out to my car for a moment....I know that she will not run out the front door! Pete may be strict, but, ultimately it is for the dog's own good. Fast forward to the present day, 5/28/16....Delphina has turned out to be a fabulous little dog! While a constant work in progress, I could not have asked for a better little girl!
