Went here for some pho. Inside is dated. However, it is pretty much the same interior as most restaurants in Chinatown. You don't go to Chinatown for decor. Service was friendly. Menu pretty straightforward with the typical pho dishes, vermicelli bowls, grilled meat and rice. To start I had the spring rolls and grilled pork balls. The spring rolls were hot and tasty, the pork balls were a little dry. Then I had the steak, well done flank, tendon, and beef balls pho. Decent amount of meat, really tasty broth. Complaint here I noticed is that they skimp on the bean sprouts and the basil. I would agree that this is true, and bean sprouts are so cheap and the basil really adds to the dimension of the dish. If you need a warm bowl of pho though, it is worth coming to. I really enjoyed the broth and for a large at a little over 14 dollars, it is well worth it.

I've been going here for years, quite possibly one of the best places for pho out there. The reason why I gave it 1 star is for a few reasons. Last week, I went to king noodle after an appointment. In the post covid world, you are greeted by a temperature check which is fine. You're promptly given a menu. As usual I order the #1 special, very big order and tasty. The menu has changed slightly as the prices have all increase so it's now $14 for the extra large. There are no more condiments, spoons, chop sticks among other things on the table to promote hygiene. I was then asked if I wanted anything to drink. Usually they give you a cup of hot tea on arrival but I guess that's changed or it may be an extra charge?(don't recall tea being on the menu) I just got plain water When the food arrived, it was piping hot. Delicious but it was missing the sprouts and basil and the wedge of lime. I quickly drank the cup of water as I do when the broth is loaded with sodium. No refill or sight of the person. I guess he may be busy. Upon finishing, I got up and went to pay. On leaving the young man(assuming it's the owners so ) opened the locked door for me. Right there I asked him "I noticed everyone else got sprouts and basil with their orders, so they not come with them anymore?". He replied with "we got them, you just have to ask for it". Like really? It's a staple that comes with them. Was it an extra charge that I didn't know of? Usually any reputable place wouldn't hesitate to bring it out considering he was the one who served me. I've been here many times, and he has served me prior as well. This is the first time I went there post covid and I don't think his response was appropriate especially if he asked me if I wanted anything to drink. It's definitely run different compared to most places I've been to and this may be the last time I'll be dining here for a while. The rating I gave it is based mainly on the service aspect and the missing sprouts and the response I got. The broth itself was top notch

This used to be one of my favorite pho joints in town, although I haven't been here in a while. My mom didn't like how "MSG-y" the broth was, complaining that not many pho restaurants do it the real way anymore, and she felt her broth wasn't hot enough to cook all her beef. They were a little cheap on the bean sprouts. I mean, c'mon, bean sprouts are cheap! My mom also didn't like how sparse the tendons were and how cheap they were to cut them into small pieces. Mine was pretty much the same: I had two, maybe 3, pieces of tripe, although the beef did not disappoint. Thinly sliced and just the right amount of fattiness. The regular size is not filling at all, I find that I need the large to tide me over. The XL seems to be just more broth than noodles. Don't expect great service. Limited free parking on the street. The empty lot next to the restaurant used to be free parking, but was converted to paid a few years ago. Free wifi available. Cash only.

King Noodle House Pho Hoang is a staple in Chinatown. Or as you probably know it, the moustache man's restaurant. Family run and operated for over 15 years, they continue to do well for themselves. I've been a few times now, with the most recent trip being with two buddies for a late Sunday lunch. The place was bustling, especially given the time (1:30pm). Tables were constantly being turned over the whole time that we were there. Crazy. The interior is simple, small and cramped. Service is a little rough around the edges (moustache man dumped our bowls of pho off with merely a grunt of the order number) but that's pretty normal for Viet restaurants. I think the word I'm looking for is curt. At least the food comes out quick and promptly. - Bun bo hue (#32) ($11.95 extra large) - spicy bun bo hue served with a lemon grass/satay broth, special rice vermicelli, well-done brisket and cold cut Vietnamese style sausages. The broth was tasty and had good depth to it, but I didn't find spicy. The XL gives you a toooon of noodles to slurp up. Perfect for all of us, as we were completely famished. - Steak and beef ball noodle soup (#27) ($11.35 extra large) - my one buddy was already done eating his bowl by the time we were maybe halfway done ours? Impressive. Hit the spot, indeed. - Pho dac biet (#1) ($11.35 extra large) - well-done brisket, flank, steak, tendon, tripe and beef balls noodle soup. The special gets you a bit of everything meat-wise. I could see little goblets of fat bubbling up from the broth's surface. Don't forget, CASH only. King Noodle House hits the spot if you're looking for a bowl of filling, tasty noodles. Is it my #1 choice in the vicinity? Probably not given all the other excellent choices around. But hey, competition is always a good thing.

I was extremely disappointed with this restaurant. Being in the middle of Chinatown, you would think their pho was good! The broth literally tasted like a thick water doused with nuoc mam. The noodles were undercooked but the meat was decent. I probably would never step foot in here again.

So far this is the best valued Pho noodle place in Edmonton that I've been to. The flavor is great. Also Inexpensive price for a big portion size

The 'decor' of the place struck me as soon as I walked in. 1970s circa 1982. Brown leathery chairs, mirrors on the wall, strings of little red lights, and of course, the moustache. Such ambiance. Love it. I ordered a small steak and flank - $6.95. Dave got a large - $7 something. As with any place, the soup came out in a matter of minutes. This is potentially the tastiest pho I've had on my pho journey so far! So many noodles (I love noodles), a fair amount of meat (but not too much. I usually can't finish all the meat in pho), not greasy or oily. I like how the little side plate had the hot pepper and some jalepeno slices. And the owner just ads to the mystery of the place. A pretty quiet guy with an amazing moustache, he seemed to be the only person there - in and out of the kitchen - and on his down moments was watching some Asian TV show behind the counter. The great pho, unpretentious decor and mysterious owner all add up to make this a restaurant worth visiting.

I finally decided to check his pho place out for the fist time after hearing constant praise for their pho. I took my fiancé with me around 2pm on a Sunday afternoon. There were still quite a few customers in the restaurant at this time which was good to see. When we walked in the moustache man was seated in the far back corner and he just pointed to the table we should sit it - which ended up being a large table for 6. He came around a few minutes later with menus and tea. The tea was lukewarm at best which I found surprising. Shortly after dropping off the menus he came to take pie orders. I ordered a regular sized pho tai (sliced rare beef) and my fiancé ordered #1 (after I suggested he order it from reading positive reviews on that item previously). The order came out fairly quickly, along with the standard plate of beansprouts, basil, lime & chili pepper. We both enjoyed the flavour of the broth and our selections in general. The part lacking here is the customer service. Not once did the moustache man smile or make us feel welcome here. Strictly business it seems. And the place itself is run down with tacky paint colours and lighting. If I could give this place 3.5 stars I would vs. 4 Thankfully the pho makes up for it

When I flew into Edmonton, I was met with the frigid winters of Alberta. Being from Toronto, it was definitely quite the change in climate. Given this, I thought it would be good to settle down with a hearty bowl of pho. I've asked my friends and they recommended that I check out King's Noodle. As an aside, the exterior was not as sketchy as the degree to which people were warning me. Sure, there are homeless individuals but they're harmless for the most part. Walking in, I was met with a very tacky paint job that was probably done in the 70s. Despite there being only 3-4 tables seated, I was no-nonsensely pointed to a table. It's usually just a habit for me to get the Dac Biet noodle at new pho places to sample everything. I was given a large bowl of pho, usually I order extra large but this large bowl is already comparable to XL at other places. The soup was piping hot, which is definitely a plus. The broth tasted very homemade - which is a double edged sword - it was not as flavourful as it could be - but I appreciate the lack of MSG flavour . The noodles and meat are also great - wonderful portions. The side bean sprouts though looked like it was waiting a little too long to be used. Of course this isn't the best pho I've ever had since I'm from Toronto - but this was a good bowl of pho perfect for the winter. And yes, the moustache man's service is horrible. 3.5 stars.

All of it is authentic and delicious. My must orders here are the duck salad and soup combo. It's what I come here for as no other place in edmonton has it on the menu that I know of. Little has changed on the interior, except for the addition of a large fish tank. The menu is very typical of Vietnamese noodle houses, featuring a good selection of pho noodle soup, vermicelli noodle bowls, and rice dishes. I opted for a bowl of pho with medium sliced beef and brisket. My soup was full of meat which was reasonably tender and lean, and came in a broth that was well-seasoned. Colleen, my co-Volunteer Coordinator, ordered a bowl of Thai spicy pho, and she ordered it without any meat. She was happy with the flavour of her soup and its abundance of noodles. I started with a green onion cake, finding the two large rings of fried dough and green onions to be large and not too greasy, as well as a bit cheaper than I've had elsewhere. I also decided to do something I rarely do when I order pho - even though I find the complimentary green tea and broth from the soup to be more than enough liquid intake for one meal, I decided to try one of the iced drinks. Being a dreary winter day I felt some extra vitamin C was in order, and opted for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It was incredibly fresh and full of pulp - I literally felt like I was drinking an orange in liquid form. Prices are in line, if not lower, than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Our entire meal, which also included a can of pop for Colleen, cost less than $25 before the tip. Service was fast and friendly and neither of us had any complaints about the food. Winter is the perfect time for a steaming bowl of pho, so consider heading to Viet Huong.

We are incredibly spoiled by the amount of amazing Vietnamese food that we have here in Edmonton. I…read moredoubt that the Vietnamese population is greater here compared to in other cities but the culinary deliciousness and pure celebration of the cuisine that comes out of this community is second to none. Certainly a point of pride in our city! From the best phở in the country (King Noodle), near-perfect bánh mì (Van Loc), delicious plant-based fare (An Chay), to innovative street food expressions that you've never tasted before (Mãi Mãi)... We've got it all. And it's the best of the best. XO Bistro + Bar throws their name into the ring with a more elevated and modern Vietnamese dining experience, demonstrating that there's a sophisticated side to Viet food that demands representation as well. VUE Weekly loved this restaurant and named them #1 Best Vietnamese, #1 Best Late Night/All Night, and #1 Best Happy Hour in 2018. First opened in 2017 and now with two locations, I visited the original Downtown spot on a Saturday evening, anxiously anticipating the symphony of flavours ahead. XO Bistro is in good company on Edmonton's famous boardwalk street which is lined with a collection of many popular restaurants. The parking is a nightmare and the small handful of street parking spots always seem to be taken. But you'll figure it out. With its proximity to the ICE District you can easily imagine that this restaurant has been able to take advantage of the pre-game dinner crowd and post-game spillover from the Moss Pit. The restaurant is larger than you might imagine, with its soaring second-storey ceiling and filled with dark moody finishes and an impressive bar completing the lounge vibe. However, the real show-stopper is the life-sized cherry blossom tree right in the entranceway, covered in pink blossoms. This tree serves as a major focal point and it's difficult to take your eyes off of it! The servers are cheerful and friendly, and although there were no window tables available we were seated comfortably. Priding themselves on their cocktail program, I knew that an XO Original was a must and soon I found the Good Morning Vietnam (Gin, Soho, hibiscus, lime juice, lychee puree - $15.00) in my hand. A cocktail to match the restaurant perfectly! I loved that this beverage was fresh and fruity and wasn't too strong. Pretty and drinkable, the sweet flavour of lychee took the lead while tart notes from the lime and hibiscus leveled the beverage out. Without a doubt, the correct drink to sip on under the blush-hued blooms! XO Bistro's goal is to serve food that isn't always traditional but is always authentic. Bold, balanced flavours inspired by the everyday energy of Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, and Da Nang. The liveliness and fresh takes are apparent on the menu right away and I was excited to order some dishes that felt new. Starting with appetizers, the Double Trouble (Rice paper, shrimp, lettuce, vermicelli, tangy fish sauce. Choice of pork or veggie spring roll - $11.25) stood out as something fun to try. Can't choose between a spring roll or a fresh roll? Get both! I loved this playful version and especially enjoyed getting to eat two types of rolls instead of just one! We chose the pork spring roll for the inside and I loved the textural crunch and juicy pork that it provided. Meanwhile, the outside was wrapped in rice paper, acting as a window to the shrimp enveloped within. Dunking each bite into the zippy fish sauce added just the right acidity. Wonderfully tasty, so much fun to eat, and striking presentation to boot! Another item that really caught my eye was the Bone Marrow (Roasted bone marrow, panko crust, toasted baguette, pâté - $19.00). A dish that I love but only come across seldomly. Now this was a dish that I certainly did not expect. But boy did I love it! Roasting the marrow topped with a crust of seasoned panko was inspired - a genius way to add texture (and more flavour) to an otherwise fairly gelatinous ingredient. Bread is such a huge component to Vietnamese cuisine (think bánh mì) because of the French colonization in the 1800s. The Viet people then proceeded to transform this bread into a completely new, localized culinary staple. The baguette at XO Bistro was absolute fresh, housemade(?) perfection. Crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. I loved slathering the bread with ample amounts of delicious pâté (another "gift" from the French) and then topping it all off with spoonfuls of rich bone marrow. Each bite exemplified decadence and I reveled in it. This might very well have been the best bone marrow preparation that I've ever had. Vietnamese food might be one of the earlier examples of fusion cuisine, and while colonization sucks the food admittedly does not. XO Bistro provides everything that you know and love in terms of main dishes; from bánh mì to phở (there's even a "phở challenge" where if you eat an obscenely-sized bowl in 45 minutes you get a prize) to bún. Staff won't allow happy hour specials at discounted price despite being in happy hour time frame. Hoang long is a modern clean space with bamboo accents and a newly renovated area. There is a large patio out front for summer. But it being closed off made the entrance kinda blending in. I was looking for the entrance and walked right by it. Trying to figure out how you get in is a slight challenge. As the door blends in so well and it appears it's just the patio. But that's the entrance. I visited quite early during happy hour at around 6pm. The place was entirely empty except for staff which was slightly disheartening. But I'm sure this place is bustling during the lunch hours. Wait staff were slow to greet me so I sat myself and grabbed my own menus. The menu Is vast. A huge range of thai and vietnamese foods. From soups, sandwiches, grilled meats and stews. Looking through the menu was overwhelming but at least there is something for everyone. We decided on trying the chicken satays with peanut sauce. These were a famous item popular during the taste of edmonton. They did not disappoint. They charred them so nicely I could hear the fire crackling in the dead of winter. But the best part was the peanut sauce. They don't provide this during the taste of edmonton. But it brings the dish to new heights. I would say...stick to the grilled meats here. They don't disappoint. I throughly enjoyed my bun bo hue. It was authentic and tasty. It made my list for top 5 in edmonton for sure. Portion was perfect and the ratio of meats and noodles were just right. Another great dish. My only vice was that it was happy hour...advertised from 3-7pm. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. I won't ever be buying drinks here in the future. Bc hey...they don't follow the advertised prices on the menu. It's decent. I would revisit if I am in the area. But it definetly won't be a go to place that I would drive to if I was hungry.

I was walking by and didn't have lunch but saw the sign for half price combos from 2-4PM. It was a…read morelittle after 2 so I went in to check it out. Inside there was just one table occupied but there is a decent amount of seating for the lunch time crowd. It seemed cleaned. The combos they offer are a rice or noodle (pad thai that didn't look very appetizing) and then up to 3 or 4 items. The food was under heat lamps so I could see what the options were. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. It would probably be better to go during the lunch hour when the food is hot and fresh but I'll pass next time I'm in the area.
