    U-Pick Brochure. (2023. Front).

We were driving from Mackinaw Island to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore when we stumbled upon King Orchards' road-side market and bakery. The orchard also offers U-pick berries and orchard fruits but we didn't have time on our travel day. My husband, who was driving, was most interested in getting a strong caffeinated coffee and a bakery item, while I mostly wanted to browse. We ended up being enticed by a table with fresh discounted bakery items -- including an apple pie and croissants. We relaxed with a delicious slice of pie at a table in front, along with coffee and an apple cider "icee" before continuing on our journey. The small shop was cozy and well laid out and the two women in the shop were very friendly.

    Gross King Orchards Cherry pie.

We bought great fresh fruit and vegetables but the worst cherry pie we've ever had. For $18 it would be nice to have a few cherries in a cherry pie. Seriously, it was like someone took a can of cherry juice and stirred in some cornstarch and called it a pie. And this is in the heart of cherry country! Gross.

My favorite little barn store! They have the best frozen apple cider around for $4. I go every time I'm in town. They're also the most reasonable and affordable prices around compared to the other local barns around. It's smaller than others but they have tons. I always find good gifts for family and something yummy for myself. The staff is friendly and the inside is warm and homey in the best way.

AMAZING!! The cutest farm, we went cherry and raspberry picking and both fruits were perfectly ripe and sweet. We also got some cinnamon bread, donuts, zucchini, and pie- all fantastic.

One orchard owner recommended Shangri-La Too. It's in the middle of the peninsula and it is easy to pass by; we did a few times. There is a big white residential house with farm of apple trees behind it (but it looks smaller than the massive farms around it) and a barn/shed off to the side. There was a small square sign (similar to a political campaign sign) that says u-pick and a little larger permanent rectangular Shangri-La Too sign in front of the house. There wasn't anybody outside or any sign of apple pickers, but we rang the door bell and Louis came out to explain how everything worked. He was very nice. Unfortunately, due to hail on the peninsula, the apples were badly damaged. So Louis gave half of the price for each box of apples we picked. He directed us to the specific apple trees we wanted and went back in. We picked several boxes of different types of apples, including my favorite Fujis! We are currently going through the last of the apples. As we picked, more people came to pick. There was enough room in between the trees so I could drive my power wheelchair in the grassy paths. Bumpy, but doable. The younger trees were short enough for me to pick some apples from my wheelchair and some of older ones had low hanging branches. It didn't seem like they had a public restroom, but perhaps they let people go in their house. They didn't seem to mind that we brought our two dogs, who barked the whole time in our car. Louis was very nice to us and chatted with us as we paid. We will be coming back here next apple season. Their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Shangri-La-Too-Farm-150994154926073/) says "Shangri-La Too is a small family owned and operated farm. We grow small crops of cherries, raspberries, black raspberries, apples and vegetables. We also sell eggs and honey. In season, we offer a u-pick and we pick.

I usually prefer tea bags; lecture me until my ears fall off but for I'm usually fine with sacrificing tea quality for the simplicity and convenience of a teabag. Light of Day teas, however, make me a believer in the magic of carefully blended, high quality tea. I used the Creamy Earl Grey tea to bribe myself to do the most mind-numbingly dense readings for my grad school courses, or for simply getting up and dressed for class on a grey winter morning. It's a true treat, and worth the high price. In addition to being absolutely delicious (black or with milk, sweetened or unsweetened), the tea and nearly all of the ingredients were grown at the Light of Day farm, which is certified biodynamic and right here in Michigan! Having originally tasted and fallen in love with Light of Day teas served on campus at the University of Michigan School of Public Health cafe, my friends and I made sure to visit the store during a trip up north. We felt like (grown) kids in a (healthy) candy shop -- there were so many kinds of tea, and they all sounded amazing! We all bought tins of tea for ourselves and as holiday gifts for friends/relatives, and also had a round of matcha shots, which were delicious. We strolled around the garden near the shop, but in warmer weather be sure to see the farm!
