My favorite Bakery in Northport MI. THE BEST CINNAMON ROLLS EVER! All pastries are so amazing! I LOVE LOVE The Filled doughnuts! O my They also have a good old fashion coffe. Nothing fancy just coffee & tea! There are a few large dining tables in there, locals gather and have coffee and commence and visit and chitter chatter. Driving through Northport and I saw Barb's out of the corner of my eye. It sounded familiar so I asked my fella to pull over as I pondered. Then I remembered it was an honorable mention on MLive's best doughnuts in the state piece. So, naturally I had to try them. We were there on a Wednesday so it wasn't that busy. Apparently on the weekends the doughnuts go by 10am but there were plenty to be had by 2pm that day. We got one of each available--a glazed pretzel shaped doughnut, glazed cake, chocolate glazed cake, and custard filled with chocolate. A few we got two of (because, why not?) and it came to about $5. The doughnuts were fab. The best I've ever had? Probably not. But pretty good. I'm more of a yeast glazed doughnut kinda gal and the pretzel shaped doughnut here was fab. Sizable (seriously huge) and melted in my mouth. The cake had a great flavor and was nice and dense. Maybe a little on the drier side but that's to be expected with cake vs. yeast. The glazes were also fab and the custard in the custard filled was excellent. The space is small and decorated a bit like a cross behind an antique store and a tea shop. A few benches out front to sit at once you have your goodies but generally no where to sit. Cash only. read more

I want to give this place raves because for years they've had amazing donuts and other pastries. However this year I sensed they were selling day old cinnamon twists (not nearly as fresh as the used to be). Also when you pay with a credit card, they blatantly ask if you want to leave a tip? Seriously??? A tip for putting a donut in a bag? This place came under new ownership within the past year or two and it's showing. I hope they correct their ways and they return to being the great bakery it used to be. PS. Coffee has always been watered down and lousy, so "just say no." read more

My wife and I have been going to Barb's Bakery for over 20 years. My wife has been going for closer to 35 years. The food is without the best however this past weekend we had a first, sadly a negative experience that we don't wish on anyone. My wife and I enjoying a weekend without kids and spending that time in our favorite place, LeeLanau Peninsula. A long standing tradition of ours is to go to Barb's Bakery for our morning coffee and treats. On this past Saturday without kids we decided to take our scrabble game and relax and enjoy our time. The store has three tables in it, two small round tables one on each end and a large rectangle table that sits in the middle of the other two and usually has six locals sitting there trying to solve the world's problems. To make a long story short, my wife and I were 40 minutes into our game and not much more than 10 minutes left when Jerry, Barb's husband leans over the counter and yells to my wife and I, "no gaming here you have to go!" To our surprise we ask him why and try to explain that the gentlemen in the center table have been there twice as long and we have purchase more than them. His response, "they are here all the time, you have to go!" Jerry then walks back into the back room and my wife and I each play one more round when Jerry walks back and yells, "if you aren't gone in 10 minutes I am calling the police." Wow... we were floored, a place we feel has been a big part of our lives the last 20 years seems to have turned on us. Not to cause a scene or be a disturbance we decide to pack up and go. The men at the center table were no comfort and yet did not solve any of the world's problems. Rumor has it this is not the first time Jerry has been ill towards a customer. A local who we met told us a story when Jerry angered a local and his wife made him take the gentlemen a basket full of donuts. Where was Barb on Saturday. My wife and I have tried another bakery called, 9 Bean Rows located at 900 E. Duck Lake Rd. just a few miles west of Suttons Bay. This bakery is amazing as well. We also heard that a baker who used to work at Barb's started her own business after a run in with Jerry. Her bakery is called Chimoski Bakery in Suttons, we did not have a chance to go there but it is on our list. Maybe one day we will go back to Barb's but it won't be for a few years. Sadly Jerry ruined something that was so near and dear to my wife and I. read more

Barbs is great bakery with good food for reasonable prices, barbs has stuck to the classics and used the same recipes for ages, the cinnamon twist was the same now as it was since I was a 5 year old and had stayed $0.79 since then. Great for kids! read more

Our travel book recommended a stop at Barb's for their cinnamon twists. We got there around 2 p.m. and the selections at that point were very limited. But they did have a few cinnamon twists left and we tried a couple. They were good, but nothing where I'm running back to get more. read more

Fantastic little bakery. They have a limited selection of fresh delicious pasteries and doughnuts. Coffee leaves something to be desired and there is no bathroom. We recently visited Barb's again after a long time away, and were delighted to find it well stocked eith breakfast goodies. The cinnamon twists are an absolute must, but if you can get a kolache -- delicious Eastern European soft cookie/pastry filled with ham or cream cheese -- get some; you will not be sorry. Barb's also sells other pastries -- cherry sticks, cinnamon rolls and the like -- and doughnuts. And while much of the business is takeout, our favorite thing is to grab a table and savor our pastries with a good cup of coffee while learning the 411 on community life from the locals. read more
