As a city girl, I have never been interested in ranches. But because of a project I was working on for work and the fact that king ranch is the second largest ranch in the world, I decided to learn more about it. I took a bus tour on a Sunday at 12:30pm. The tour lasted for about 1.5 hours. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. He taught us a lot we didn't know about the king ranch and Richard King. The ranch is indeed enormous. We got to see different parts of it, horses, cows, where the cowboys live, etc. We didn't see much of the wildlife probably due to the fact that it was too hot outside. We spotted some deer, wild turkey and a few birds and that's all. A little disappointing but oh well. They have tours daily except for mondays. I'd recommend the tour if you are interested in ranches and history. They also have a visitor center, a museum and a saddle shop. The saddle shop was closed when I was there and I didn't go to the museum either. Overall, interesting place!

The tour people were very kind and waited for us and even kept the Visitor Center and Gift Shop open for us after the bus tour.

I was very disappointed with my experience…read more I ordered the ribeye with a baked potato and a house salad. The first issue was that my house salad didn't arrive until after my entrée was served. I ordered my steak medium, but when I cut into it, it was completely overcooked. The meat was gray throughout, with no pink at all, and it was so tough that I couldn't enjoy it. I almost never send food back, but this was one of those rare times. The waitress was very apologetic and confirmed she had entered the order correctly as medium, so she had the kitchen prepare another steak. While waiting, I started eating my salad. When the replacement steak arrived, it looked better from the outside, but once I cut into it, I found it was just as overcooked as the first one--gray all the way through and again with no hint of pink. On top of that the baked potato was cold and seemed to maybe be reheated in the microwave as it was chewy. The "fresh rolls" had to be 1-2 days old. Stale and flavorless. At that point, I couldn't help but question the quality of the steaks. For a steakhouse, I expected a much higher standard. Based on my experience, the meat seemed to be of poor quality and certainly didn't meet expectations for a properly cooked ribeye. The waitress did her best to make things right, and I appreciate her effort, but unfortunately the kitchen failed twice. I left very disappointed and wouldn't return based on the quality of the food.

I did go looking for a BBQ place, but didn't find one. Now that was a bit disappointing. They seem to have a great many Mexican restaurants. I did wonder if their style of food is like ours in San Antonio. Ours is so Tex-Mex, I'm really wanting to try true, or more truly traditional Mexican food. I know, I know just go to the beautiful country of Mexico. It's in the plans! Until.then, I'll have to come back & try out some of the places in Kingsville. The little downtown strip was the highlight of my day trip though. Enjoy the photos..
