Downtown joint dabbling in both old school Chinese American classics and authentic dim sum. Most of the Yelp photos hit the dim sum, but most of the customers in the large room stick to memory lane. The place is divided into two halves: tiny bar and three rows of booths on one side; large tables with chairs on the other side. Combo plates available both at lunch (M-F) and dinner (any time). -- Sticky Sweet Soy Garlic Sauce Wings: Wow-worthy, with the darkest sauce I've ever seen, looking like someone poured Hershey's syrup on them. Characteristics of teriyaki, soy, and garlic, and intense sweetness, but all balanced and very different, and there may even be Hershey's in there afterall. More importantly, quite delicious. The wings themselves were really good too, bringing firm to crispy skins and tender, juicy interiors. The sauce hardens over time, so eat these fast. But you'll want to anyway. Near-elite to elite. -- Rice Noodle with Shrimp: Lackluster compared to other versions I've tried. Noodle not as fresh and slippery. Sauce not as flavorful. Shrimp were good but spaced out. Below average. -- Sweet and Sour Chicken (on a dinner combo): Ping pong sized/shaped balls of chicken instead of the usual fingers, but these were excellent. Very high meat to batter ratio, good crispness to the exterior, and decent tenderness inside. Sauce served in the side. No pineapples or cherries, but good contrasting flavors to the sauce and no glop. Well above average, even without the fruit. -- Pork Fried Rice (on the combo): A mixed bag, this had light grains with pleasant but subtle flavor, long-in-the-tooth dry pork nuggetry, and some onions. Flavorful or not, that rice had freshness, moistness, and bounce. All things considered, a little above average, but with potential for higher. -- Egg Roll (on the combo): Felt limp to the touch but had a delicate crispness to it. Inside, a mix of celery, cabbage, and pork, with decent flavor and a moo shi feel. Not bad. A little above average. Lots of ups and downs here, but a reluctant 4 stars thanks to the brilliance of those wings. I scouted plates on other tables on my way to the restroom and saw similar highs and lows, but more highs. Even if the potential goes unfulfilled (and I have higher hopes for the old school than the dim sim), the wings alone would bring me back. read more

We recently had a nice meal at King's Garden. I ordered the pan fried noodles (which in the past has been delivered as crispy noodles), but this time, we got some udon style noodles, lightly pan fried. They were good. We also got the aromatic chicken clay pot (delicious) and the black pepper steak. A dish of garlic bok choy completed the meal selection. Good food, nice flavors, good prices. read more

A casual weekday outing for lunch. I just wanted some dim sum. A couple anonymous Rhode Islanders on Reddit recommended this place. Here we are. Our order (for two): Lunch Special Lo Mein with Pork Spareribs (Char Siu), Chicken Feet, Siu Mai x2, Fin Dumpling and tea. Hot tea is necessary when eating dim sum. We also asked for and got hot mustard as a dipping sauce. If you haven't tried hot mustard with your dim sum, I recommend it. Everything was good! It was... not too salty. I would argue the food could use just a bit more salt/flavor (and to be fair, a salt shaker is provided on the table). But also it's good not to eat so salty, soooo despite being a salty person, I enjoyed the food. The service was good! read more

It's a couple years later since our last visit, place had been renovated, and we're very happy with the current Kings Garden - it's like it was back in the old days! Dishes - especially their specialties - and dim sum are back, tasting good and fresh. Service is friendly, prompt, and attentive. We had a medley of our favorites: salt & pepper squid, Three Delights (stuffed pepper, eggplant, and tofu), pea pod leaves in garlic sauce, and scallops in black bean sauce. So happy! So full! I really like King's Garden. Nothing fancy here, just good Chinese American food at very reasonable prices. While I've sampled many of their luncheon and dinner combos, as well as their dim sum, my go-to is the fried boneless chicken combo with brown gravy. You get an enormous amount of food for $10.95. Occasionally it tends to be a little on the greasy side, but the flavor is always delicious. A pot of hot tea and fortune cookies are complimentary, and the staff is pleasant, efficient, and allows you to linger as long as you'd like. There is free street parking in Rolfe Square and I've never had a problem finding a space. Fast takeout, too. read more

I recently moved to Cranston and tried a few Chinese restaurants that I found on google. They were okay but not great. I used my Ring neighbors for some suggestions and they mentioned Kings Garden. Well this last Saturday I did do a delivery order and WOW service was great and fast. The food OMG egg rolls, hawaii Five, crispy beef, pineapple pork etc. Everything was great, the fresness of the vegetables were outstanding. if u can't make it up to boston chinatown, this is a very feasible spot for dim sum. it's a old style chinese restaurant with ur favorite chinese american dishes and a decent dim sum menu. service is pretty swift and straightforward. because there isn't the same rush of a big city dim sum spot, i don't think the dumplings are as fresh as a place that is making them around the clock. nonetheless it hit the spot for a weekend brunch. the interior is family style casual and there's more seating than the outside lets on. read more

Great spot for dinner! The two times we've been here on a Sunday 5pm and Thursday 6pm nights, it wasn't busy. Services was awesome! Both visits, service was attentive and we received our food quickly. For food our favorites have been scallion pancakes (the sauce it comes with is delicious!), boneless spare ribs, combination fried rice (never fails!), and noodles with beef and veggies (so good, our fave!) From the dim sum menu, we loved the pork shiu mai, steamed fresh shrimp dumplings, beef wrapped in rice noodle, roast pork bun (amazing!), and coconut pudding! Kings Garden has been on my want to go to list for the longest time and I am so excited that I finally had a chance to visit Kings Garden today. Kings Garden is located at 90 Rolfe Square in Cranston, RI. There is a small parking lot in the back and unfortunately it was packed when I arrived around 12:30pm. Rolfe Square is a really busy street, but there are street parking spots available. When I arrived, Kings Garden was busy but we were seated right away at a booth. There were many families enjoying their meals. It was really nice to hear both Chinese and English being spoken. The ambience reminded me of having dim sum in Flushing, NY or in Boston. We were handed a menu and a sheet to order dim sum. We ordered 2 hot milk teas, fried mashed taro dumpling, shui mai, steamed stuffed bean curd skin, steamed roast pork bun, beef wrapped rice noodle, fresh shrimp wrapped in rice noodle, fish fin dumpling, golden lava bun, steamed pork ribs and rice noodle, and steamed stuffed sticky rice in lotus leaf. I was surprised by how big the fried mashed taro dumpling and steamed stuffed bean curd skin was. The other dishes were the typical sizes. My favorite was the steamed pork ribs and rice noodle, fried mashed taro dumpling, and golden lava bun. These 3 dishes were packed with flavor. The steamed pork ribs were tender and the rice noodle was fresh and soft. The fried mashed taro dumpling outside was crunchy and the inside was packed with filling. The golden lava bun was oozing with salted egg yolk custard and the bun was soft. The only con of not having the dim sum carts go around and instead ordering everything on the sheet is that items get cold since you can't eat everything at once. Service was a bit slow, both to order and took about 30 minutes for the dim sum to come out. The waitress said all the dim sum is prepared to order and it did taste fresh. The hot milk tea didn't arrive till almost the end of the meal. Our waitress apologized for the delay and said it's really busy. The milk tea reminded me of the ones you get at an Asian bakery so it's sweet but not overly sweet. Either way, I am glad I was able to try Kings Garden out and there is dim sum available close by to satisfy my dim sum cravings when I can't go to NY or Boston. I will definitely be back! read more

I would give a 3.5 if I could. We were there for a friend's birthday. I heard they had dim sum and that was my favorite part. Everything we had from the dim sum was amazing. I wish they had slightly more options, but I would come back for the dim sum. My friends suggested we all get a dinner plate. I always get boneless spareribs when I'm out. The meat itself was great but there was no sauce so it tasted very dry. My half a rating is mostly for this. The rice was a little dry but not too bad. I absolutely loved the eggroll though. First time here and I am satisfied. The large menu that includes dim sum and many tasty soups was definitely eye teasing. It made ordering difficult but fun. The service was good but the waitress was like a tornado- quick to come and go. The ambiance was good but as long as there are other customers in there to give some other noise. The taste and food pace- This is a little weird because the food came as it was ready. Causing some meals to come way quicker. That was something that needed a little change. The taste of the food overall was good definitely giving some new tastes. The hot and sour soup had many additives - peppers but not many mushrooms- if any- It really gave it a sweeter taste. These were my 2 visits to Kings Garden and I have to say I love it! Their Dim Sum were tasty and spicy because they have chili. Service was a lil fast and came organized and prepared. I have to say a tv playing is common for other restaurants but it's better view in Kings Garden because it's near the bar. No staff were rude they were actually pretty friendly. First the good: The dim sum here is solid - I'd give that 4 stars. I recommend the fresh shrimp dumplings, the shrimp with pea shoots, the stuffed bean curd skin and chives dumpling. All tasted fresh and delicious with a good amount of filling. However, the rest of the food is swimming in grease! The egg roll tasted like it had been fried in old oil and the fried rice was so oily that I had to throw it out! I ordered chicken with broccoli which was OK but there was way more broccoli than chicken and the chicken pieces were cut very irregularly which made some of them tough seeming. We love going to Kings Garden in Cranston. The food is always amazing and they have a huge selection of dim sum also. My go to meal is the general tso shrimp with white rice and broccoli. Big portions and great taste and quality. You know it's authentic if 2/3rds of the customers are Chinese too. So it's a must visit. read more

I've waited awhile to update my review because I keep thinking "is it me?" But after 3 bad orders in a row I feel like King's Garden is nothing like it used to be. To be fair, a lot of positive reviews are for the dim sum whereas I usually order Chinese American. I used to get King's garden all the time but after getting a bunch of bad orders I can't recommend it. The last few orders I have gotten have been very hit or miss but unfortunately more like 80% miss. The most recent time my general tsos chicken tasted strongly like oil and the mushy breading was coming off. A big flavorless oily bready mess. The fried rice is inconsistent and ranges from flavorless to just fine. For appetizers the crab rangoons are usually okay but the spring rolls and egg rolls have been inedible. I also ordered Lo Mein recently and it just didn't really have a lot of flavor. It was extremely salty also. For as much as they charge ($40-50 per order usually) I'd expect better and there simply are better places around at that cost. read more

I've been bringing my little brother here for his birthday since he was 12 y/o and now he's 23 (and yes we still go every year ). Their house made hot oil is incredible and makes everything taste better, not that the meals need to taste better; but, we love spice! Always get the steamed shrimp dumplings, black bean chicken feet, shanghai dumplings, the beef black bean chow foon noodles, and garlic bok choy. The staff are always on top of their game, the decor indoors feels so homey and appreciate how there's always a table available. It isn't like the dim sum spots in Boston where they have push carts with dim sum, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they always deliver on flavor and freshness. read more

We wanted to find a dim sum place in Rhode Island and tracked down Kings Garden via some Yelp research. We went around 11:30am on a Friday and was concerned at first that maybe it was a bad choice as we were the only customers however by 12:30 or so it started getting more crowded. They had a decent selection of dim sum. Overall the dim sum was decent for a smaller city and prices also reflected that. The server was attentive and nice. The restaurant had a nice casual atmosphere. The dining room was large so they can handle larger parties easily. read more

It's always good because I think it's cooked the right way without any short cut. So it is puzzling to me as to why you decided making these changes now; What I ordered this morning was pretty bad w/ lumps of rice in the congee base, use of excessive amount of food enhancement, making the congee to become very salty, and with artificial taste. Wouldn't have thought that you could get delicious, well prepared dim sum in Rhode Island and King's Garden delivers! Cute, clean and spacious dining room with friendly, very accommodating wait staff. Ample street parking just outside. I have been eating dim sum for more that 45 years well before it became trendy, and the dishes offered at this restaurant are as good as my favorite spots in Boston's Chinatown and Quincy dim sum establishments. We tried a good selection of items including the beef ball (ngao yuk), shrimp dumplings (har gow), beef wrapped in rice noodle (beef cheung fun), shumai, and one of my favorites pan fried turnip cake (lo bak go). I will definitely be coming back for more of these delicious small plate dishes and to try many more that we didn't order! First, I'd like to clarify why Kings Garden is THE BEST spot for dim sum in Little Rhody. Usually Yelp will run "The Best of ..." places for things. Sure, there are always new places to try, but then taste can be subjective, but it's always nice to be open enough to try at least. As for the custom of Dim Sum, which translates to 'Touch the heart' is usually served with tea and are small parcels of 3 or 4 pieces. I've always had it as a form of Chinese brunch growing up in San Francisco and then living in Hong Kong for 20 years. Usually, carts laden with these small treasures rolled by with ladies asking what you would like and how many and marking your receipt. Usually you pay by the plate, its color and/or size and such. The variety is immense. So much so that I won't go into it here. Some places in RI go to Good Fortune Market or Boston Chinatown and buy a lot of the same basics but are frozen, Shrimp Dumplings (Har Gow or Crystal Dumplings), Siu Mai (Shu Mai), little pork and shrimp dumplings, Char Siu Bao (BBQ Pork Dumpling in their version of a sweetened bread-like Bao and on and on. But there truly is more to be tried. Turnip Cake is a grated Daikon with bits of shrimp or roasted pork and held together with Tapioca Starch that is formed into loaf that is cut and pan fried that is comfort food at one of it's finest. Shrimp or Beef Rice Noodle with Hoisin sauce is another soft, unxious absolutely must have. Small pork ribs in black bean sauce, Chinese Broccoli steamed with a garlic sauce of baby Bok Choy prepared in the same manner are a way to get some greens into you for balance. Beautiful duck served with the thinest of pancakes, green onion and hoisin or plum sauce...I could go on. Fake Crab Rangoons do not count and the same can be said about other Western additions dreamed up for the American version of Cantonese or Mandarin cuisine that are not available anywhere in Asia. Each item must taste differently. Kings Garden satisfies my cravings without having to go up to Boston. GO! Try one or try several. It's funny though. Even though I have eaten dim sum all over the world, I never got the taste for chicken feet. Go Figure. Have fun. Be adventurous and LIVE! read more

Visited this place while on a trip because we wanted to dim sum. The waiters/waitresses are very kind and welcoming, but they aren't too attentive. They have a lot of options and have most of what you would typically get for dim sum. However, the food itself is just okay- nothing extremely great. I used to order this authentic dish called Beef and Egg from another restaurant that went out of business. I stumbled upon Kings Gardens website and noticed they had Shrimp and Egg. I called them yesterday to see if I could substitute the beef for the shrimp and they did it. Of course I would not know if it were good until I tasted it. I order the Beef and Egg and BBQ Ribs. My boyfriend and I were absolutely DESPERATE for dinner on Christmas Night, and since my family eats Christmas Dinner at 2 PM (eek), we were starving. Enter my magical Yelp bookmarks list, which had Kings Garden in Cranston at the top! Yes, Kings Garden has been hiding out on my bookmarks list ever since I heard that they are the one and only spot in Rhode Island to get dim sum all day long! I went to college right next to Chinatown in Boston for four years, so I was spoiled with all the Char Siu Pork Buns and Crab Rangoon I could eat, but when I moved to RI after graduation, I was disappointed to find that Lil' Rhody doesn't really have a lot of a great Chinese cuisine. Never fear, though! Kings Garden is here! Kings Garden is situated right in Rolfe Square in Cranston, which is home to Bettola, another favorite spot of mine (best pizza in RI!), and the Artist's Exchange, a multiuse performance venue next door. I look forward to making a "dim sum and a show" night next time I have friends who are in a play at the Artist's Exchange! The restaurant has a neon sign outside that is reminiscent of vintage Chinese eateries, and it's a beacon of hope for all who seek yummy Asian cuisine in RI! Inside, it's clean and spacious, with plenty of seating for hungry customers at booths, tables, and a small but lively bar. Settle in for some yummy eats! We've only been here once, so I can only speak with authority about the Crab Rangoon (flavorful and crisp), Shrimp Fried Rice (pedestrian.. I'd stick to the dim sum), and Steamed Roast Pork Buns (fluffy and giant, almost as good as their Chinatown counterparts). However, I did enjoy everything we tried, and I look forward to coming back again now that I know that I like this place! I'm slowly adding reviews to places I've been around Rhode Island as a form of documentation. I ate here awhile ago, last summer, but it's still distinct in my mind because it's one of the few places for dim sum in RI. I came to Kings Garden with my mentor from CA because we were both deprived of some dim sum in our life... I didn't have high expectations coming in, so I wasn't too disappointed leaving. I do appreciate the fact that there's even some options for dim sum around RI though, so I'm not trying to complain. We got the typical bbq buns, century egg congee, shrimp rice rolls, ha cao, chicken feet, and sticky rice. There's some more dishes that I probably missed that is in the picture. Overall, it satisfied our cravings and did the job. We loved the century egg congee, but the buns, ha cao, rice rolls tasted like frozen food heated up. The sticky rice was really what we were there for. Definitely not CA quality, but still did the job. Tbh, if you're looking for high quality, gourmet dim sum, you're not going to find it here. If you're just looking to satisfy a craving, then I would recommend. Although the price can definitely adds up, so maybe you would want to just to Boston if you have the chance. read more
