I hate to leave poor reviews, however I believe I have to to help the new owners improve. I have been eating here since the mid 1970s, and it was always my "go to" Chinese restaurant. The pros: the new owners are very friendly and personable. The wonton soup is still great and has even more wontons and pork lately. The Peking ravioli seem to be even tastier than they have in the past. The cons: in the past 2 weeks, I've ordered several dishes that were very different and sub-par compared to the food under the former owners. The chicken and broccoli was very goopy and the chicken tasted spoiled. I had to throw it away. I ordered chicken teriyaki and that chicken tasted sour as well, as though it was spoiled or had some type of spoiled marinade on it. This happened to me twice. Last, the waitress is no longer there I guess, so there is one person trying to work the front and serve tables. It's not working out. The new owners need to get the old server and chef back if they want to keep Hong Kong's long-time customers. read more

I have been a customer of Hong Kong of over 25 years. I moved away from the area and would travel 45 minutes out of my way from Connecticut to enjoy several signature dishes from this restaurant. The original owners were dedicated to their business and worked very hard to maintain high quality food and exceptional service. It is sad to say I am no longer a loyal customer to this establishment. The new owners have taken a restaurant with a beaming reputation that is decades long and have turned it into a culinary wasteland. What was once one of the busiest corners in Arctic is now a ghost town. It is a shame to see a business that was superseded by such a strong reputation be diminished by the lack of consideration by new management. I don't write reviews lightly, especially for a place that has been part of my life for over 30 years--but what has happened here deserves to be said loudly and clearly. For decades, it stood as a reliable, respected, and genuinely enjoyable place to eat. It wasn't just about the food--it was about consistency, tradition, and trust. Unfortunately, all of that is gone. Since the change in ownership, the experience has completely deteriorated. What makes it worse is the repeated insistence from staff that "nothing has changed." That is simply not true--and anyone who has been coming here for years knows it. The most heartbreaking example is the sweet and sour chicken. It used to be unforgettable: a rich, brown sauce that was thick, sticky, and perfectly balanced, with bits of pickle and pineapple that gave it a signature flavor I couldn't find anywhere else. It was the reason I kept coming back for decades. Now? It's unrecognizable. The sauce is a bright red-orange, thin and watery with a gritty texture, and the taste is honestly awful--like something hastily thrown together with no care or understanding of what made the original special. It's not just "different." It's inedible. Resembling the taste of an old boot with ketchup! Beyond the food, the overall atmosphere has taken a serious hit. The management feels disorganized, the customer service is poor, and interactions are uncomfortable at best. Instead of acknowledging concerns, there's defensiveness and denial. That only makes things worse. This was once a decorated, iconic establishment with over 70+ years of history behind it. To see it reduced to this--poorly run, dismissive of loyal customers, and serving food that doesn't come close to its former quality--is incredibly disappointing. I have been going to the Hong Kong restaurant for 50 + years and I am sorry to say I will never go again!!!! The food was not edible. The sweet and sour chicken sauce was changed and tasted like ketchup the General Tso's chicken sauce had no spice and tasted like ketchup, the rice was dry and the egg rolls had no pork or shrimp. The new owners are argumentative and will not admit the changes even to someone who has been going there for 50+ years. I wish Kay Kay and Kenny were still cooking those beloved recipes. We did a too good too go app pick up. When I got the order was already ready for us in a nice two bags one big one one small one. We took it home. It ended up having in it one combo plate of chow mein like a dark color, chow mein with the crunchy noodles, eggrolls, and fried rice. then we get another quart of the chow mein as well as a mashed potato and gravy in a quart. Everything was hot and fresh and delicious. We are looking forward to going back there again in the future so we can eat inside and try something else. I really enjoy this Chinese food spot. They have parking in the front and on the side of the building, so that's not an issue. You can order them online, through door dash or you can call it in, no worries at all. You are always greeted when you walk in, and the employees are always so sweet. I've never ate inside but it's decorated cute, and they serve scorpion bowls and seem to have a nice variety at the bar. The young man who helps me when I go, is always kind, I've never had an issue here. I always order boneless spareribs, chicken tenders and 2 beef teriyaki sticks, and they are delicious! I've also tried their beef and broccoli which I also enjoy but the first one is my go too. They're close to me so it's convenient but if you're ever in the area, please give them a try it's so worth it. Maybe next time I'll get a scorpion bowl! read more

Today we did Hong Kong in West Warwick. For a place that has been in business for a very long time, it was appropriate to visit it sooner rather than later for a current review. Ordered today was a General Tso Combination, Sweet & Sour Chicken Combo, Wonton Soup, and Beef Teriyaki. The General Tso was very very sweet, almost candy sweet. Brian & Mike enjoyed it, I look for something less sweet. I digress. The shining star for me was the Pork Fried Rice, egg roll, and Beef Teriyaki. They shined very brightly. Rice is so important. It can separate a good place from a great place. Hong Kong has great fried rice, plain and simple. The Beef Teriyaki was super tender and not at all chewy. Feed back on the Sweet and Sour Chicken was high praise. I am happy with our visit to Hong Kong, I would certainly recommend a visit. The eggrolls were very good, nice and crispy. The fried rice was ok but could have used some onions or scallions or something for flavor. It was cooked perfectly, nice and fluffy and not gloppy or sticky but lacked flavor, My fried shrimp was kind of rubbery and overcooked, The chicken teriyaki was a weird yellow color and had almost no flavor. If I could give a minus I would !! Used to be a good restaurant but not anymore. The last three times we ordered take out, got home to have things missing. I called and they blamed us for picking up to soon. My wife ordered a shrimp and vegetables dish and got a bunch of celery and sauce !! Menu said my steak and mushroom dish came with white rice, but was told they do not give you rice anymore even though it says so. Both dishes costs $12.95 each and neither one was right. When called girl said that she just works there and could not do anything about it. She did tell me I had to go back because the shrimp that was supposed to be in the dinner was sitting there. WELL I GUESS BEING A OVER 30 YEAR CUSTOMER means nothing. Don't have to worry about being a customer any more. Let me start by saying my family has been coming here for years (back to my great grandparents generation) and the food has always been consistently good. For the last couple years however the food quality has gone down hill to the point I will never go back. We ordered sweet and sour chicken combos today for takeout and the chicken in both orders was so overcooked it was barely edible, and that's not an exaggeration. The coating on most of the pieces was dehydrated and greasy and the chicken inside was so tough and dry, like jerky. It's clear they had been re-fried at least once or twice before serving it. Absolutely gross! This isn't the first time we have had quality issues. It has happened multiple times over the past year or so but never to the degree of the food we received today. One other time we were dining in and the French fries they brought out were dark and completely dehydrated. We told the waitress and she said she has told the cook/owner they can't keep re-frying them 3 or 4 times. Apparently they must precook their food and throw it back in to 'reheat' it. Disgusting, especially when people are paying good money to eat FRESH food. Never again!!! read more

Bright, clean, well staffed. I don't go to a Chinese buffet to eat a salad but when they have a nice salad bar i consider it a bonus. Started off with small spinach and arugula salad with toppings like chick peas, cheese, croutons, and cup of wonton soup (one of 3 or 4??? they offered). Crab Rangoon out of this world! Clams have a spicy kick. Next for dinner selections I tried and liked: General tso chicken, teriyaki salmon, lo mein, roasted pork, chicken wings sticky and plain. Yum yum! didn't care for: beef and chicken teriyaki. Hubs said spare ribs were ehhh but I liked the piece I had. Dessert offerings were small cups of mousse, ice cream, small cakes, fried dough, sesame balls and sticks. The sticks were good. Only downside...no hibachi grill. I had been going to this restaurant for years, my parents took me there when I was in a high chair, the food has been going downhill, but the last straw was a wait that works there she has always had a poor attitude, but tonight when I went there she was so rude, scolded me for what she said I knocked over some kind of sauce on the floor that she refused to clean up she said she made her boss clean it up, the only problem is I have no idea what she is talking about, because I never spillEd anything thing, I always gave her a large 20 to twenty five percent tip even though she has always been rude, but after tonight I will never go back to that restaurant. read more

Whenever I have a craving for authentic Chinese American I always head for the Hong Kong Restaurant in the Artic section of West Warwick RI. Renovated in the last few years it a great place for a nice dinner. With a full bar my wife love to share one of their deliciously refreshing Scorpion Bowls. I have lived less than a mile from here for about the past three years, and drive by at least twice a day. Yesterday, I finally decided to try some takeout from here. All I can say is, man, I wish I had tried this place a lot sooner! I guess I judged the proverbial book by its cover, assuming that because it's located in Artic (a/k/a downtown West Warwick) among vacant storefronts, it can't be that good. Boy, was I wrong! This place definitely deserves a solid four-star rating. Not feeling like cooking last night, I called in an order consisting of three combination dinners: beef teriyaki; sweet-and-sour chicken; and battered boneless chicken with brown gravy. Each entree comes with two sides that include fried rice, and either an egg roll, or chow mein. I was told it would be ready in 10 to 15 minutes. Arriving a bit early, I paid for my order and sat down inside. The dining room is simple, but clean, and staff was very polite. My order was soon up and I went home to eat. They use styrofoam trays, and thankfully, they used a plastic bag, because one of the containers leaked sauce or gravy. The first thing I tried was the fried rice, which is some of the best around these parts. The sweet-and-sour chicken was also excellent, both the flavor and consistency (many Chinese places tend to overcook their battered, fried chicken). Teriyaki sticks and the boneless chicken with brown gravy were also good, and even the egg rolls - which some people don't bother with - were above average. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the chow mein, but it was still okay. And, the best part was the prices, which are very reasonable, especially considering the tastiness of the food. Portions seemed decent, also, as we had ample leftovers. For just under $22, I fed three people, two times each. It almost makes me wonder why I buy groceries and cook myself, when I can eat better, with way less effort, at the Hong Kong Restaurant. I'll be back! read more

Old school Chinese American restaurant. It has excellent cuisine of this type. Very popular with locals and with good reason, as the dishes are well prepared although nothing special. SOOOO TERRIBLE!!! We decided to order this take out. We heard good things about this restaurant. Now, having tried the food, I'm wondering if raccoons rated it. They'll eat anything! The egg rolls were fine leather. They were abysmal. Chicken lo mein, pretty basic right? Omg it was not fit for my enemy's ill-tempered dog. Funky taste to chicken (as in bad meat) and a pervasive and disturbing chemical taste to the noodles. Could not follow directions regarding our request for condiments including our willingness to pay extra for them. Overall experience left us feeling confused, vaguely violated, and duped. This cannot be a legit restaurant Do yourself a favor and check out the dumpster behind House of Wu first. It's your best bet. read more

This is a small place in West Warwick that is easy to miss, but it is a good place to get Chinese food. Everything I've tried has been a 8-10 good combinations, chicken fingers, fried rice etc. the important thing that makes the food better is gravy, and that is where they excel. This is a great place in the the heart of West Warwick. No, it is not traditional Chinese, but it is traditional Americanized Chinese food. I must say that it was some of the better Gen Tso's chicken I have had. It was not drowned in the dark sauce. I asked for extra spicy and they accommodated. The was thought it was okay, she really likes it a more on the darker, not so spicy side. The fried rice was pretty dang good and the Crab Rangon was great. I will say for West Warwick, this is a great find. The service was very friendly and accommodating. Down side, they do not serve fountain drinks. Everything in a can. So no refills. Not much to look at from the outside but the inside is really nice, seems to be recently updated. Ordered food to go and was very impressed that everything was piping hot by the time I got home. The large wonton soup was very good, temperature was perfect and more wontons than I would have expected it was in a quart container for only $5! This also had some pieces of pork, I didn't love those but they may have just been there for added flavor. Their combo plates are very reasonably priced, I ordered the #7 based on the Yelp review I had read. This was boneless chicken fingers with brown gravy which was poured on top. The fingers were cooked so well that the gravy being on top actually made it perfect (I thought it would be mushy but it wasn't at all). The combo came with chow mein and pork fried rice all of which was very tasty. For the price, the taste, and the temperature of the food I would definately suggest this place!! read more

Hong Kong was surprisingly not too bad. Once you get past the sketchy artic outer appearance and try the food its actually alright. I think that the prices could be a little better considering the portions weren't crazy big. Overall its what you would expect from this type of Chinese restaurant. Some of the food is really good and some of it isn't. General tso's chicken is excellent, sweet and sour chicken is pretty good too. Stay away from the lo mein. I'm a big fan of lo mein and this is the worst I've had. I think it's the mushrooms they use...they just taste nasty. The other noodle dishes aren't too good either.
