I called and spoke to someone I think he named mark.He said the manager was not in so he wanted me to explain why I was I was calling and that he would be relay.The message monday comes never heard a word from mike's so I call and this guy tells me he's the manager, his exact words were " i ain't got no complaints from nobody else" but I only have their food.I bought enough for several days.Someone could easily have brought Cole slaw served it with other stuff that they had at home or whatever and couldn't pinpoint what it was.I was able to pinpoint what it was in a few days , but he didn't want to hear it. For us, Joju, a small chain from Elmhurst, Queens that set the standard for fusion banh mi sandwiches in the 2010's, is the closest benchmark to Mr. Banh Mi. The sandwiches from Mr. Banh Mi are better. The bread is baked in-house, and is soft and airy with a slightly crisp crust. For the bulgogi beef sandwich, Mr. Banh Mi uses beef pieces instead of a salty greasy mince used by Joju. Kudos for the "Rocket Rolls", too. Although these are "just" appetizers, every element in these fried shrimp rolls, including the jumbo shrimp, thin and crisp shell, dipping sauce, seem well-considered and somehow combine to make these rolls a cut above the competition. Get these with the spicy dipping sauce. We're excited to see what comes next for Mr. Banh Mi in Bay Ridge. They specialize in a variety of jarred kimchi that you normally see in grocery stores. The price per jar is anywhere between $10-$15. They also have a weekly (changing) menu offering Korean homemade soups and lunch. I got a pork kimchi ($13 after taxes) and it was delicious. This brought up so much childhood memories of a time when my dad worked at a local Cheung Fun place in Chinatown. You feel something inside that you don't normally get when you go to a crowded / fancier restaurant. It feels like "home" in a sense. I love a small business like Kimchi Kooks Kate's Kitchen because it adds characters to the local business. :) The staff are friendly and because there is an open kitchen, you can see them make your food. I thought the kimchi had a pleasant tang, though it was a little savorier than I expected. The variety of banchan was also excellent-- I counted 21 different dishes as well as 4 different types of sauces. I picked up a miyeok and dubu muchim ($8.32) which was a seaweed salad tossed with firm tofu crumbles. I intended to eat it for dinner, but I finished the whole container before I got home because it was so addictive and delicious. If you have any questions, a staff member is at hand but everything is neatly labeled with an explanation of ingredients. Their kitchen is open on Wed-Sun so I'd love to return to try a weekend special, which rotates on a weekly basis.
