The facility was lovely!! Definitely a place to return with very unique character, though limited amenities. The bar along that we expected open was not and the offer of refreshments was actually empty. The coffee service was very minimal to the description provided. The only real concern is that they have switched to an AirBNB operation vs a full service inn. I missed not having front desk service. We received a clear confirmation and instructions but the wrong room was listed so we were unable to enter the room listed. We called the number and they responded shortly after. Are we back yet?!!!! We love this place!!! So much history, amazing architecture and fantastic people!!! The rooms give you the feeling it's still the late 1800's- the bathrooms are super clean and modern but charming too. We hung out on the main floor and had the time of our lives playing pool in addition to an old tabletop shuffleboard game. The fellow patrons were a mix of locals and travelers. Everyone was really friendly! We chilled in the old Parlor on the second floor and got some good Ol card playing and laughs in as well. The views of the train station, fort and Mississippi River are breathtaking and relaxing. I would give 3 thumbs up if I had an extra! read more

We were on a trip back from Branson MO and wanted to stop at this hotel because of the busy train line in front of the hotel. I can spen hours watching trains and this room did not dissapoint. We stayed in room 203 because being 6'7" tall I need a king size bed and I was glad to see they offered one on the river view side of the hotel. Such a wonderful place for the train enthusiasts. There is a kitchen right down the hall if you like to bring your own meals. The staff was great and I am sure lonely since being an off season, there were only a couple of rooms occupied. Trains went by 24/7 but don't worry the room has a sound machine and they will provide ear plugs if needed. It's a must stop for anyone that loves to watch trains. read more

Stayed here the past weekend to watch the trains. Picked there smallest room with the best view of the trains and bridge. It was a beautiful view. The whole place is clean. They have an elevator so you do not have to carry luggage up two or three flights. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Coming to railfan, make sure to book a room in the front. Sleeping is not an issue. I am a light sleeper but the noise of the trains at night only bothered me a few times. The inn also puts ear plugs in the room if you need them. The bed was quite comfortable and fit two with no issue. From the front rooms you have a view of the swing bridge, trains, Mississippi River (and the big Barges that travel through), Old Fort Madison. Make sure to visit the Historical Society and Santa Fe Museum. Only downside of the whole weekend was they do need to clean their windows. You could see the views fine but there was no way you could take a picture or video through them. read more

Spent 3 nights here. Had a great experience. At check in, we were escorted to our room and told where to find breakfast, coffee, and ice. Our room was very clean and comfortable with adequate towels. It's a very convenient location to just about anywhere in the area. There is an attached bar, restaurants nearby, the river is just across the highway. We'll be back ! read more

My buddy and I found this on a motorcycle ride. Looking for a none chain place to stay. We met Chi the manager upon inquiring about rooms. After a little work she found a couple. (Covid making things challenging). Then she gave us a tour of the place and a history lesson of the area. Each room had its own character. The rooms were nice.. if you only want high end five star hotels. Look elsewhere. If you want character, clean comfortable beds, great AC.. lots of charm this is the place. If you are a rail fan. Such a wonderful place for the train enthusiasts. We had room 204 that overlooked the train tracks and the Mississippi River two beds and a sofa. With a kitchen right down the hall to be able to cook whatever you wanted to if you wanted to. The staff was amazing, and we were able to bring our dog along which made the trip even better. Chewy the Local dog is adorable and loves to meet other dogs. Trains went by all day and night and I was worried about the noise but it wasn't a problem at all they had a noise canceling machine in the room and after discovering everything all day we were exhausted anyways. It's a must stop for anyone that loves to watch trains. read more

This is our first time in Iowa and this inn is absolutely amazing! It is very quaint with a bed & breakfast feel but at a reasonable price. Our room was spacious with a massive wood carved four poster queen bed. The room has two butter soft leather chairs with a matching ottoman, along with a fabric sofa that pulls out into a bed. The building was constructed in the 1860's, with plenty of character and charm. Located directly across from the Mississippi River, it is in the heart of old town with a view of Fort Madison. Too bad we're only here for one night! We'd love to explore the area. Maybe we'll come back again. read more

This place is AWESOME!!! This hotel is in an older building and has been remodeled almost perfectly. It has a feel of going back in time to the early 1900's. The lobby is beautiful. As for the rooms - each room has a unique name and is decorated a little different. I know that because the rooms that are not occupied they leave the doors open for guests to take a peek. The staff (I believe the woman also owns it) was very accommodating and friendly. They have a parlor for sitting with a grand piano and a computer for internet access. In the morning they serve breakfast. The location is great too being right across the street from Fort Madison near the river and only a short walk to the downtown shopping area. The location is a blessing and a curse. The railroad goes by just across the street and it is a very popular route. In addition, train horns sound all night. After a couple nights you probably get use to it but if only for one night it's annoying. The beauty of the hotel makes up for it but without trains it would be perfect. read more

We stayed at the Kingsley Inn over the Fourth of July this year. For me, being in a midwestern town over that holiday is special. The Mississippi River, the parks with bandstands and bunting, the old railroad depots add to the charm. This was our second visit to the Kingsley Inn. We have kept-up with the innkeeper, Chi Easton, since we last stayed there two years ago. It is full of what you look for in a place with midwestern, small town, charm. The rooms are comfortable, clean and Victorian. The Mississippi River is out your window. The staff, including Chi, Bonnie and Cass are outstanding. If you love train watching, river watching or hanging in a Mississippi River town with tons of history, I recommend this place. Fort Madison is a hidden treasure and a great base if you are looking to explore Nauvoo, or the Great River area. read more

Messed up our reservation and we did not get adjoining rooms as promised. In fact we were on different floors from our family. Put family of 5 in a small room with no pull out sofa, put us in the big one, so we traded. AND THEN our billing was messed up and required calls to the hotel to fix that. Mixed up to the tune of a total of $650 for 4 nights. I asked twice and could not get a straight answer about the daily rate. So glad I was watching my card on file and I would recommend you do that too if you decide to stay there. Chewey is cute and the story is fun. Shy is very personable and fun to talk to. read more

I would have given them 5 stars but for the loser desk clerk. I can only assume he is a trust fund baby who fell into the inn or that his dad owns the place for he is not customer service oriented and he does not man the desk but spends his time sleeping elsewhere on the premises. When I checked in I told him I wanted to split my payment on check out, part on a gift card visa and part on my regular cc. When I was ready to check out I called to have him come down. He mumbled that I should leave the keys in the brass plate on the desk and then disconnected our call. Several minutes later I called again and he grudgingly agreed to come down. He looked rather disheveled and upset to have been awakened at 9:30 on a Tuesday morning. Hey, dude, sorry to disturb your beauty rest. The highlight of this place is the great breakfast service prepared by a lady who is a good cook. read more

Loved our stay here. We had the James Madison room. Lovely appointments with a great view of the great River, Fort Madison, and the railroad. Couldn't have been happier. Friendly staff and the perfect location for our sightseeing excursion. Breakfast is real scrambled eggs with other very basic accoutrements. Good coffee! My only warning: avoid the fold out couch bed...which is the only reason for four instead of five stars. read more

I just organized a class reunion and we used The Kingsley as our venue We had about 66 guests for dinner, and more than that for the after party. The hotel staff was very accommodating, and helped make sure the day met our vision. I personally own an event venue, and knew exactly what I wanted to make our gathering just so. Aaron, Elisabeth, and the rest of the managers and staff worked diligently to make sure our night was executed well. We've had 6 class reunions over the past 30 years, and on this one, I've heard repeatedly how great everything was. The most important thing, when there is so much on the line having a larger group, is that the staff do what they promised. And they did. And by the way, this is a gem of a property. It's beautiful, gracious, formal and relaxed, all in one. read more

This place has reopened and it's even better than it was before as they updated much of the building and still kept it's historical ambiance. We had a wedding party stay here for the weekend and everyone was very impressed the the staff, accommodations, and the history of the building. They have excellent breakfast as well.
