    Kingston Station

I took the overnight Amtrak train from Union Station and, boy, does my neck hurt. But the station itself had an attendant inside and I saw her help other customers. The station itself is clean--with modern updates--and historic!

This is a beautiful historic train station. It's one of the few train stations along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) that isn't served by commuter rail--Amtrak only! I got off on a Boston-bound Amtrak train here and took some time to look through the station and wait until my RIPTA bus pulled in. It's very quaint but has plenty of amenities. Besides the staffed ticket counter, there's quite a bit of seating, outlets to charge electronics, a vending machine (though I thought it was really overpriced), and a water bottle fill station. There's also a cute exhibit on the history of Kingston station in the waiting area, where you can learn some fun facts. For example, did you know Kingston station is the oldest continuously operating wooden train station in the United States? While I was waiting, an announcement came overhead that an Acela train was passing through. Although Acela Express does not make stops here, the trains do zoom past, and you sure do know when they do! It felt as if the whole station was rumbling! I thought it quite exciting! While walking around the station to catch my connecting bus, I noticed that there were a lot of parking spots, especially for a station of this size, which I'm sure is nice for those who drive. The station hours are 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

This is not my favorite train station. It's outdated and small. There is one vending machine, two bathroom, and one kiosk. Although the weather today was fine, it's a huge pain waiting for the train outside in the winter. All and all, the station does an adequate job. Hopefully one day they will add a coffee station!

A brief ride back into time The Kingstown Rail Road Station is one of those rare places that allows you to step back into time, if only for a moment. It was built back in 1875 and has functioned as a rail road station for its entire existence. It was renovated about 20 years ago but rather than changing, modernizing and destroying the quaint aesthetics and atmosphere, it was restored to the original specifications. It looks today like it did in 1875 and is on the national register of historical places. The inside is small, dark, usually quiet and has that sort of musty smell that old wood has. Outside of the modern soda machine it's easy to imagine that this is a temporal anomaly and you are transported back into the last century. No particular conveniences or modern technology, just a great place to wait for a train. The inside almost reminds me of being in an old church. Maybe you're not sure exactly what religion is practiced here but you still want to be reverent and show the proper respect. Until of course some moron pulls out as cell phone and starts babbling loudly to ruin the quietude. The station is on the main corridor so once you leave the inside of the building everything changes. The Acela Express goes by here at warp 9 but doesn't usually stop. You see it, the world goes whoosh and then you don't see it. There is also a little train museum in the same building but it's never been open when I've been there and I believe it's only open on weekends. I have looked through the windows and it looks pretty interesting with lots of cool old train stuff. The south county bike path shares the same parking lot but there always seems to be enough parking. Just a little train station. A great place to catch a train to Boston or New Haven if you happen to live in Rhode Island but nothing that most people would go out of there way to see. Just one of the small places that makes life more interesting and fun.

Beautifully restored historic station that still functions -in fact serves as the base for a pretty busy transportation hub. Trains, of course, but also buses, taxis and commuters use the parking lots (always seem nearly full when I've been there). Also the beautiful bike and walking path is heavily used. The station itself is in great condition and has that vintage feel that I adore. Large windows let in a good amount of light when the sun's out - on a dreary January day, it was quiet and peaceful. We visited on a brisk Sunday to check out the Railroad Museum, housed in a section of the station. Currently it's open only 1-4 pm on Sundays. A very nice docent, Ann, showed us around and explained the history of how the community saved the building. There are a lot of great photos, artifacts and even a model railroad showing the area circa 1948. Why 1948? No idea, but they were careful to get the period detail as accurate as possible. It's a one-room museum, so total time spent really depends on how much reading of old documents and placards you want to indulge in. We were there about an hour and enjoyed it thoroughly. No admission fee - but there is a donation box (don't be cheap - throw in a couple bucks!) as well as a few items to purchase.

Not handicap accessible. None of the handicap buttons work on the station building. How are people supposed to get in?

Beginning and ending a vacation can be stressful. But it doesn't have to be. Rachel's team is a well oiled machine. They pick you up and drop you off in your driveway. You get communications before you arrive at Logan, where they will pick you up, a picture of the vehicle and driver name. You can't imagine how wonderful it is to get off a plane, grab your luggage and just step outside the terminal to find a member of Rachel's team waiting for you. If you are thinking of doing it yourself here is a reason why you should not. We ran into a family on our vacation that drove to Logan and find the parking garages full. They had to valet their car without knowing where it was going. When they arrive at Logan after their flight, they have to go to the parking garage and find a valet. And then wait for the valet to go and get their car and bring it to them. Is that how you want your vacation to begin or end? You can trust Rachel and her team to take all that worry and stress away.

Bill was early for pickup to Logan and super nice on the way there, making the ride enjoyable. The brand new van offered a very comfortable, smooth and quiet ride and we had plenty of time to spare at the airport. Before departures Bill even offered a courtesy check to make sure we had all the important items like passport, wallet, phone etc. Arriving home, our driver Tony communicated his ETA and called us to confirm the precise pickup point even down to the inch. Tony was so nice and we had good conversation with him and again the van was super comfortable and clean. Tony even helped carry suitcases directly to the door. I appreciated that both Bill and Tony communicated multiple times in text with confirmations, ETAs etc. Sent photos of the vans well in advance with license plates which was a really nice touch, so that we knew exactly what vehicle to look for. Bill and Tony easily accommodated an itinerary with multiple stops which made our lives SO much easier and saved us from unnecessary driving and coordination. Everything was done via text/phone which is way better than dealing with a clunky website or corporate office. Price was very reasonable and very well worth it for the level of professionalism you get. We will be booking with Bill's Transportation Services in the future for sure.

The trolley was clean and the driver was very helpful and attentive, particularly with regard to my dress and the rain. He had champagne and water bottles ready for us and took song requests fired at him one after the next. Day of execution was 5 stars. That said, we docked stars here because of the booking and confirmation process. The company wasn't very responsive, even when I called to say I wanted to pay them, and it took over a week for us to get a confirmation of their services in advance of the wedding. I only heard back from Betsy after multiple voicemails and emails from both me and my husband the week before the wedding. Overall I recommend the trolley experience, everyone loved it, but I'd just be regimented with follow up in advance of the day

Ted showcases the little town in existance, but paints the scenes of the past with delightful stories. A lifetime of community involvement has made Ted's knowledge of Narragansett the wealthiest in existance. From the Pt. Judith Lighthouse to the URI Bay Campus and South Ferry Church, the trolley explores the fascinating history of the town with soulful narratives." This doesn't even begin to describe the tour I took in August. Owner Charles "Ted" Wright delivers a colorful, interesting and in-depth view into the history of Narragansett beginning with the towers all through the different owners of the mansions including the magnificent hotels of the late 1800's to the early 1900's, the bunkers at the Bay Campus (Fort Kearny,) and the World War II prisoners of war and their newspaper, Druid's Dream, St. Peter's church and it's historic past, all the way down to Pt. Judith Light house and back! Any person that is interested in history and has read up on Narragansett's history will be more than pleased with Ted Wright's stories from his past about Buckytown and the time they fired the guns at Fort Greene. This ride is about 2 hours. I originally didn't want to go on this tour thinking that $15 was way too pricey for any kind of tour. I was glad to have spent the money to hear Mr. Wright's stories and entertaining facts about the many events, places and people who existed here in this small seaside community. Even though I knew some facts that most people don't know about Narragansett like there used to be a train that came to Narragansett Pier and there were huge hotels along Ocean Road that were well known and visited I was not disappointed in founding out new and unusual things that happened and people that lived here. The few people that took this tour with my friend and I were treated to a ride on Ted Wright's first trolley: the Onnie and Angie Trolley, named after the two people who convinced Ted to buy it. The ocean breeze flowed through the windows as we drove first to St. Peter's and toured the church, through Narragansett Pier down to the Point Judith Light house via Scarborough beach back to the Towers. Before we drove to the Bay Campus we were asked if anyone wanted to disembark before continuing on. We drove past South Ferry Road Church into the Bay Campus then back by Narrow River up Bridgetown Road into Narragansett Pier and the neighborhood behind the beach area. Even though I was afraid that it would be too hot to do such a tour, the trolley allowed the cooling ocean air to flow through open windows. Ted narrated the tour and it was loud enough for everyone to hear. If you missed anything he didn't mind passengers asking questions and invited people to ask about anything they heard. "In the months of July and August, the trolley leaves from The Towers every Wednesday to roam , returning at Noon. Cost of Tour: $15 After the tour, join Wednesday Luncheons the The Towers by Tom's Market Catering. Cost of Luncheon: $14.50 per person" (You are not obliged to go to the luncheon.) The tour begins at 10:00 am. I recommend arriving early. We were able to get a parking space on Ocean Road close to the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce. You meet the Trolley Tour on the opposite side under the Towers. A woman takes your money or personal check and gives you a ticket. You board the trolley and she takes a head count and then takes your ticket. If you enjoy history but have a difficult time walking this is an excellent tour. If you have a Wednesday morning to spend and want to discover facts about Narragansett and the seaside community that was here more than 100 years ago this is an excellent way to do it. My only regret is that Mr. Wright hasn't recorded his tour on CD or written a book.
