Such a fun experience! Your reservation is required beforehand, and they book very quickly. This is not a walk-up type of place. You're greeted by friendly staff, a warm crackling fire, and corn hole games. There's a little shop inside that you can purchase little souvenirs. Depending on your party size, you get a 2 or 4 person rail-car. One person is designated (or volunteered) as the person responsible for handling the breaks. Then you get to have a relaxing and invigorating peddling experience following the water on an old railway. The team along the way were awesome giving us high fives with a small picturesque stop along the water. You're welcome to bring snacks, drinks, camera, etc. Overall, a really great experience especially in the fall. I would happily return back during other seasons to experience it year round.

Rail Explorers Rhode Island is an absolute blast! The ride is smooth, the views are ridiculously gorgeous--think sparkling coastline, small patches of trees, and postcard-perfect bridges--and the whole experience feels like a mini adventure you didn't know you needed. The staff makes it even better: super friendly, upbeat, and clearly love what they do. If you want something fun, relaxing, and totally unique, this is the move.

Rail biking in Rhode Island was the absolute highlight of our trip! We had a blast on the superb, six-mile ride. It was so slow and relaxing--pure immersion in nature. The staff were fantastic, even snapping pictures for us at scenic spots and making sure everyone was safe at the street crossings (since we were on the tracks, haha!). If you have a location nearby, you have to try it out!

Great experience. Very different from anything else. Well staffed and good service. I really appreciate that the staff offered picture opportunities and it wasn't at an upcharge.

Bought tickets and reserved a spot last minute for the lantern tour at night. They first go over instructions with you and then you find your name on the cart and jump in to place your items in a basket and buckle up. You need to be a minimum of 16 years old to sit in the brake seat. They provide umbrellas in the cart if need be which we needed. It is three miles to the half way point and then they had smores and a campfire for us along with water and restroom. Then we pedaled back, the whole experience was about 2 hours and all staff were really nice. Definitely a good exercise and view.

I can't recommend this business enough!!! Easily one of the coolest experiences of our trip around New England. Now I'm looking up other states that offer it. The staff here were great also very patient and helpful! The 6 mile ride goes by in no time!!

We had a great time on the lantern ride. It's just long enough to keep the kids legs from wearing out. Such a good way to spend a summer evening. The staff is great!

Such a cool experience. Easy to peddle, some parts of the track could be considered moderate for an older crowd. Would recommend packing a couple drinks. The halfway point was gorgeous and we're able to see some animals on the way back! The staff were very friendly and helpful.

A delightful experience and ride to complete with one or three other close friends! There are certain spots along the trail that are absolutely beautiful to view during the bike ride. Surprisingly easy to keep the tandem bike going as you take in the views. Staff is extremely kind and friendly. Only 4 stars since it is a bit more on the expensive side, but well worth it for a splurge, reunion, or anniversary!

The trip was a pleasant and relaxing experience. The rail journey had a beautiful scenic views, making it a peaceful way to enjoy the landscape. I wish there were more amenities at the rest stop, such as a small store to buy snacks or water. The return trip was the same route, and it would have been nice to experience a different path on the way back. I did feel like it was a bit overpriced for what you get, I will still recommend this experience if you're in the Rhode Island area. Is it something I will do again? Most likely not.

This was such a fun experience! The workers were super friendly and helpful to get you all set up. There are fire pits, cornhole, and a gift shop to visit while you wait for your tour to start. Once we were seated there's room between you to put your bags, snacks, waters, and SUNBLOCK- bring it you'll need it trust me! We opted for the north tour which was about 5.5-6 miles in one direction. During this tour we saw so much- we went through beaches, residential areas, forests, bridges, and more. It was cool how it wasn't the same scenery the entire time. I had the best time snacking on some strawberries and admiring all the views. I also loved how there were workers at different check points and they took a lot of pictures for us! I would love to do this again. The bus ride on the way back was a perfect way to end the activity. Definitely check out the Rhode Island location- so fun!

A good experience. Probably a little overpriced, and the views weren't that great, but for a new/different experience you could do worse. Super friendly and personable people. This is one of those things where everyone's mileage will vary but it was a fun albeit unspectacular time for me. For the record I did the northern tour.

Rail cars turned around ready for the return trip.

Ask the Community - Rail Explorers Rhode Island Division

How hard is it to pedal? Does it require much strength? I'm in my 70's and although I keep active, I haven't ridden a bike in a very long time...

I'm 44 and haven't rode a bike on 30+ years. It's not hard. Once you even pedal a little bit, it can coast on its own for a little bit as well.

Do the rail bikes have backup electric power?

No, they do not. They're entirely powered by the pedaling of the riders, like a bicycle.

Which tour is better? Northern or southern?

We did the southern tour...the ending view was nice, however not much to see on the way except for a few glimpses of the ocean and it was a slightly shorter tour. I've heard that there are better views on the norther tour!

I started visiting the 40 steps. There were a lot of people crowding the steps and taking photos. I enjoyed this part of the walk and would repeat again in the future if I came with friends. To get to the next session of the walk there is a detour that brings you by the next block and to the next entrance. I found the next section to be the smoothest walk and very scenic. After that, you see signs that there is some rugged terrain. You also get signs that you pass at your own risk and a reminder that you are passing through private properties. I highly suggest you wear proper footwear as there are some rocky sessions and uneven ways. If it is hot, you may want to bring water and wear sunscreen. Also check the map as there are sessions where it is clearly marked that the closest exit is some distance away. Still worth the walk as you get magnificent views and glimpses the back of some mansions/houses along the way. I exited at the Ledge Road exit.

You could bring snacks on the ferry if you liked. The bathrooms were clean and easy to access. Parking was free and abundant. The tour of Narragansett Bay was enjoyed by all! So being at the pickup point and its 5 minutes after we're supposed to leave, I call them to see what's going on and then they tell me it got cancelled and I should've been told Tuesday, but obviously wasn't and again, even got the confirmation/reminder email the day before. As someone that doesn't get a lot of time out work to burn a day off with nothing to show for it is extremely frustrating, and honestly, I just can't risk getting burned again. The owner Ted called later that day offering to make it right and I was refunded the money for the trip and the other trip I cancelled but I can't risk burning another day off with nothing to show for it. The people have always been nice, so I won't completely knock them, but beware even getting a confirmation email the day doesn't mean the trip is happening.

There's a lot of interesting and good information, and I liked the people. But.... The first half of the tour is in an old mini bus. The bus has tiny windows, like 4" square, and no air circulation. No fans. No air conditioning. Today was nearly 90 out by 10 am, when our tour started, and temperatures inside the bus got so hot that stepping out felt cool! You don't travel far, and then they stop for 10 minutes to talk about what's out the window. It's brutal. Ironically, the travel distances are so slim most people could walk it. But, just sitting on the bus in the heat? Yuck. The second half is in an old shed where you learn about harvesting. Again, it could be interesting, but it's a good 10° hotter, even with the fans going, and it makes it hard to focus. Or even listen. Better weather would have helped. But, we had an old lady in our tour group nearly pass out, and the guide indicated that that was not uncommon. Heck, complimentary water would be nice. Waters are a dollar. The tour is fifteen. It's all cash only.
