I'm a sucker for Japanese stationary products. During my occasional visits to Portland, I always end up at Little Otsu on the East Side. A few days ago, my Son and I were hanging out in Beaverton, and he suggested that we pay a visit to the Uwijimaya Japanese grocery store, which has a small-ish Kinokuniya Bookstore situated within the back corner. After escaping the tractor beam of the grocery store's extensive Saki selection, we make our way over to the bookstore. We found the usual contained within: manga, magazines, Totoro, and of course notebooks, lots of pens, and various other unique office supplies. The stationary section is mostly contained in the last 3 rows of which I wandered repeatedly. My Son finally told me that time was up, and so I reluctantly checked out within the store with just a cool campus spiral notebook and a cheap olive-inked ballpoint. I could have gone for more, and I will during a future visit. read more

I love this outpost of the classic Japanese bookstore. If you don't know them, they're like the Powell's of Japan. You' re gonna find manga, cookbook books, stickers, Japanese magazines, etc. We go there for their stationery and pens. The store is set inside the Uwijimaya Japanese grocery store but beware, their hours are a little later than Uwijimaya. My son loves this store so much that he browsed 45 mins with me at the grocery for the bookstore to open and he is not a patient guy. So a few hints, they ask you not look at a book or try a pen and put it back on the shelf. They have little stations/ containers nearby you can return the touched items so they can sanitize it before putting it back on the shelf. They also only take credit cards at this time and allow 10 customers at a time. The cashier girl is super nice and helpful. This place is always well stocked, organized and clean. If you're looking for that certain cute item or just want to check out a fun store, this is a good place to try. read more

I've been coming to Kinokuniya for...wow, 20 years or so now, and I have seen it evolve (or devolve, depending on how you look at it) into what it is today. Up front, many of the items for sale here are more expensive than you'd think, due to the cost of importing premium items from Japan. I've watched as their ongaku (music) section shrank from two walls in the corner, bursting with CDs containing J-Pop and J-Rock, anime soundtracks, hogaku, music video DVDs and more, slowly evaporating down to nothing. Their anime DVD and Japanese cinema sections fell to a similar fate, becoming a pale shadow of their former glory. Compared to the Kinokuniya at the recently renovated Seattle megastore, well...there is no comparison. I get it. The demand just isn't here to support some of these products, and the rise of Amazon and online shopping undercut the import market and stifled competition. And despite all of these factors, I cannot fault them for it. The products Kinokuniya offers are niche here is the US, for a reason that is as cultural as it is economic: Americans will not pay extra for quality. Don't get me wrong, a lot of things Kinokuniya sells is kitsch. Nobody *needs* a bunch of pencil erasers that look like sushi (with compelling accuracy). Nobody *needs* an oversized fashion magazine with a purse folded up inside. Nobody *needs* a series of randomized, blind-box, collectable 2" cat figurines or Kewpie dolls (except my wife, apparently)...but there they are. They're part of the cultural fabric of Japan, and thus they only appeal to a specific market: the Japanese expat, immigrant, or the American Japanophile - basically, the only people you will encounter making a purchase in this store. There is still a fabulous selection of Japanese manga, literature, children's books, cookbooks, magazines and more, and many of these items are written in Japanese, so their usefulness to us gaijin is limited. The stationery for sale here is among the best in the world, though, and perfect for aspiring artists, authors or bibliophiles. Like the music and movie sections, the quantity of artbooks and figurines for sale has similarly atrophied, but you can still find high-quality memorabilia from the most-popular "flavor of the month" anime series or movie, plus a healthy selection of Studio Ghibli products. It may not be what it used to be, but Kinokuniya is still true to itself, to what is always has been: a small window into the madness that is the everyday reality of that legendary island on the other side of the ocean, Japan, and that's exactly why I love it here. read more

This is my anime fandom loving, cosplay wearing, sushi addicted teenager's anime , manga book,and Asian stuff mecca. Tucked in the back of uwajimaya, we are here at least once a week. They have tons of cute things, pens, stationery, anime figures, manga books, other books, a great children's area, cookbooks,magnets, buttons, pusheen coloring books, all kinds of things. Their merchandise turns over frequently and shipments come in often. They have a membership card for I think $25 that gets you 10% off purchases and rebates if you spend a certain amount of money. My teen's uncle gave one as a birthday gift and it has been very helpful. My kid's dad bought a very extravagant, much coveted, overpriced $200 anime figure last Christmas and saved some buckage because we have that card. The favorite thing my kid does is gamble on little blind boxes with itsy bitsy anime characters in them. For $10 a pop. On a bad, sad, grumpy day last week the teen bought five blind boxes containing wee little figures ( meant to hug a phone charging cable) at once from the same anime show and actually scored five different figures!! Rainbows sparkles and unicorns abounded!! Usually there is at least one duplicate (and before you judge me , the kid has a job so I do not have to support this addiction). Duplicates lead to online trading which can become complicated. I am not a huge fan of the blind boxes. They are soon going to open a new bigger kinokuniya store downtown. Kinokuniya is a Japanese bookstore chain operating about 13 locations throughout the US. The Beaverton store is quite small and is located inside the Uwajimaya grocery store. Kinokuniya carries a variety of books in Japanese as well as English, Japanese DVDs, stationery items, a huge assortment of pens, stickers, plushies and more. It's a fun store to browse because you are sure to find some cute or clever item that you can't live without. A new larger Kinokuniya store is set to open soon in Portland. Hopefully both stores will thrive. read more

I recently visited Oregon and stopped by here to check out the selection. I'm a hugeee fan of PJSK and they only had a few items. They had the illustrations books and the anthologies. They also had the Wandashow Miku Nendoroid. However, they didn't have anything else. They didn't have any badges, standees, keychains, or anything else. I was a bit disappointed, but I bought everything they had. The books were a good price, considering if you were to order it online from Japan you'll have to pay a ridiculous amount for shipping. The workers were also nice. Great! read more

We had visited Portland for a few days to enjoy the scenery and the outdoors. I was pleasantly surprised to find a kinokuniya bookstore here! It was a little small, but it was nice Asian pocket in Portland. We probably came by 3 different times to stare at everything they had. They never bothered us for coming by so constantly. I also bought a few magnets to take home with me! Cute and pleasant location. read more

I love Kinokuniya bookstores! This is where I get my arpakasso fix. (^____^) This location is rather small but they have a lot of great merchandise: Japanese magazines, anime, books, stationaries & office supplies, cute little anime characters, ARPAKASSO! Probably a bunch of other things I can't think of at the moment too. The store is always very organized for the many times I've been here. It's always easy to find what you're looking for and the staff are very friendly if you need help. I don't always get greeted or asked if I need help but they are still very nice. This store is always clean and honestly it feels like I'm walking into a store in Japan. Probably because the workers are all Japanese. Haha. I love it though. Also, in comparison with being a smaller store than the one in Seattle, they have more of a selection of alpaca plushes - which I love because the one in Seattle seems to sell out fast. Stationary is cute, they have art how to books which I love and then of course manga, art supplies, magazines, children's books, novels, etc. A small store but a nice well rounded selection. Good sized Japanese bookstore tucked away in far right corner inside Uwajimaya. The kids book section is very cute and comfortable with kids size table and chairs. About a quarter of the kids books are in Japanese only while the other three quarters are in English or even bilingual. I found my favorite pens here and if you are a pen freak like me, you have to try it and see for yourself. The pens are called Dr. Grip and they are very comfortable to write with, really, the only pen that doesn't cramp my hand when writing extensively. Also found a book called "Farts: A Spotter's Guide. I just don't know what A Spotter is or why they might need guidance but it isn't a real Japanese bookstore without at least two books on poops and farts. read more

HUGE store with something for EVERYONE, whether you're a manga nerd or a stationary hoarder or a Ghibli fan. They have shelves upon shelves of manga series, both in English and their original languages. They even have Japanese magazines from the 80s! Upstairs, they have an area devoted to Ghibli films, along with a section for figurines. This is definitely the kind of place where you spend ALL your money. A must-visit store whether it's you're 1st time in Portland or your 100th. read more

Most people probably come here for the vast selection of Japanese comics or books, but I love their pen selection! You can find all kinds of colors, sizes and styles. Most are $1.95 to $2.95 a piece, but they have some very smooth ones for $20.00+. read more

From kids books, manga, magazines, art supplies, chotchkies, recipe books, movies, they just have a fantastic selection. Prices on goods that are still in Japanese are actually pretty fair as well. Items needing translation into English are fairly pricey but hey, an addition service is tacked on so what can you expect. read more

I really need half stars, ah well. In my book this is a 3.5 star store because of the limited size and selection for English only readers. Now I realize this is a Japanese book store but compared to the ones I have been to in Japan Town San Francisco, and many in Los Angeles the selection is paltry. Strong Areas for English Readers: Artists: They do offer a sizable manga and art section. If you enjoy some of the very talented modern artist from Japan you will have a hard time not walking out of here with at least one Monograph. Students: They had a great selection of books geared towards learning Japanese. They also had a large children's section which can also be useful when learning. There but paltry: Japanese Culture, Coffee table books and cooking books. Pretty much missing: In depth books on history, deeper exploration of the culture and religion. Also many other stores offer a wider selection of traditional woodcut artists. A fun place to visit and browse but not the best. read more

I have been to Kinokuniyas in Chicago, San Jose, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York and absolutely adore them. Although this Kinokuniya isn't as large as the ones I've seen in other cities, it is a perfect size and just well stocked enough for anime, manga, and Japanese fashion fans. Their magazine selection is large, and they stock many English books despite their small size. I called ahead to pre-order a copy of Nakayoshi（なかよし）since they only receive very few copies in-store every month (one of their employees said they only receive 3!!), and the process was painless and fast. They even have a subscription service that I may utilise in the future so I don't have to constantly call every month. What shocked me especially was how much of the space was dedicated to Good Smile Figma and Nendoroid! As a collector myself, I now know there's another place to purchase them if I end up missing my AmiAmi pre-order time. The best part of Kinokuniya is the price. All the Japanese books are a close Yen to USD conversion, and much cheaper than if you decide to order from Amazon Japan, Alice Books, CD Japan, or any other large Japanese product distributor since there isn't an additional shipping charge. If you're an avid collector or can read Japanese, or even want to collect copies of your favourite magazines, you will likely find them for a decent price in Kinokuniya. To be honest, this is a Japanese bookstore for a reason. Many of the English books can be found for cheaper elsewhere, but their collection is very good and well-organised. read more

I love this place. I come to Kinokuniya a lot just to read the Japanese fashion magazines (I'm a photographer) and also to look at the manga and music aisles. It's a small store but you could literally spend hours in here reading through all the literature (well, as much as one can who doesn't speak Japanese) and they also sell really cool craft supplies. This place is one of a kind, my major Japanese culture indulgence, and being connected to Uwajimaya doesn't hurt either. read more

So many interesting books and magazines, tons of adorable plush stuffed toys, a good selection of Studio Ghibli items, Sailor Moon merch, tons of shaped erasers and other stationary. It's pretty small (especially compared to the rest of Uwajimaya) but it's packed full of so many wonderful things, I really can't get enough of Kinokuniya. read more

I cannot believe we have a Kinokuniya here in Oregon. Upon finding out, I had to go and I swear I was hopping/jumping around the entire store trying to contain my excitement. Filled with a bunch of japanese manga, stationery, dolls, etc, it is truly a weeaboo's wonderland. I mainly stopped by for some stationery (i collect pens; they have a wide selection of zebra sarasas here). I was a little sad to see that this store is a lot smaller than most Kinokuniya, but I am happy nonetheless. I definitely recommend you peruse around the store and get yourself a little Asian snack while you're at it. read more

I you are interested in manga and you want to know where's the best place to buy what you need in order to make your own manga, then this is where you want to be. They've got the art paper, pens, pencils, toner sheets, copic markers and how to's to help you. PLUS they have a great selection of manga to look at along with art books that you can't find anywhere else. One of the things I miss most about living in Japan is going to Loft and shopping the entire floor of stationery. This is as close to that as I think I'm going to get living in the U.S. They have a pretty small but awesome selection of stationery, stickers, Japanese books and manga/anime if you're into that. It's inside Uwajimaya and closes earlier than the store itself does, I think around 7pm on the weekdays. read more

i really like this store!! they have so many items from anime, mangas, and other kawaii stuff on the right side of the store. what shocked me was that; if ur a kpop stan (such as me myself lol) they have kpop albums on the left side outside the cashier, not much of a selection to be honest, but i was happy there were some. my sister got BTS' Dark & Wild album! but overall it was very crowded and difficult to navigate from aisle to aisle, but it's alright! i'm glad this store existssss! read more

This location is small in comparison to its San Francisco store, but it's still rich in Japanese culture. My favorite section is the one with origami books. The people who run the shop are helpful and are willing to order a Japanese-language origami book that you can't find online easily. read more
