Great bookstore with tons of books, toys, and tons of merchandise from Japan. Stopped by since my kid is a huge anime fan. We were exhausted from walking all day but suddenly he found a burst of energy and was fine browsing the store for over an hour. There are two floors with a cafe on the 2nd floor. Overall, there is a really big selection and there were lots of people shopping while we were there. Service was good; the registers are located downstairs and they have lots of cute items + point of purchase displays. I was overstimulated by the time we reached the register but that may just have been because it had been a long day. read more

I seriously need to stop coming here but I just can't. I love a good bookstore, and this one has always been special to me. Located right across from Bryant Park, it's almost impossible to walk by without going in. It's usually crowded, but that's part of its charm. The store has three levels, each worth exploring. The main floor features an impressive selection of books, including bestsellers and new releases right as you walk in. The lower level is where you'll find collectibles, specialty pens, beautiful notebooks and stationery, unique gifts, even more books, and plenty of cute items that will tempt you to spend more than you planned. The book selection is excellent, although I have to admit the prices can be a bit on the higher side. The staff are always friendly, and checkout is surprisingly quick, so don't let the long lines discourage you. One thing to note: drinks aren't allowed inside, so you'll need to leave them with security before entering. If you're visiting the area or spending time around Bryant Park, I highly recommend stopping by. Whether you're a book lover or just enjoy browsing, this bookstore is absolutely worth a visit. read more

Hubs: How'd you find this? Ghost in the shell is his fav anime. I knew this was a must have. I was able to score a Ghost in the Shell special archive edition (see pics). This bookstore is one of the coolest spots in midtown. I used to work in the offices next store and would go upstairs to the cafe for lunches or snacks when I needed a break. It was a time way back in the day. Cut back to our Mom's day out... On Mom's day out we made our way toward our lunch reservation, bustling through the glow of the Knicks recent championship win. The city was a vibe and we were living for it. We also were on a mission for finding possible Father's Day gifts and being that 2 out of the three Hubs was into anime, I suggested making a stop here. Not only don't have great stuff for the manga/anime mega fans, it's also a pretty cool book store. One like back in the olden days. Check out was quick and easy and we really did enjoy just looking at all the great stuff. Can't say anything about the food because we saved our appetite for our lunch rez. But all in all, it was great to be back and to show off one of my spots in my old stomping grounds. read more

I've been to kinokuniya before and it always has a special place in my heart because I love the huge collection of manga, anime figurines, the most adorable stationary and Asian book series. The upper level has the cafe (which I didn't get to try since they opened at 11) and manga/figurines. The main level was mostly books from all different genres. Bottom level was stationary and plushies. I took a star off because I had a stroller with me and the elevator only goes to the bottom floor where the stationary is. To get to the second floor there's an escalator which is nice but to get back down you have to take the stairs which you can imagine is not comfortable with a stroller. read more

This is such a cute shop right across from Bryant Park. It has food, stationery, comics, manga and a bunch of other general toys and NYC-themed products. I feel like the hidden gem is the food area. I've worked in the area forever but didn't know they had one upstairs. The egg sandwich was really good. There's also an employee to help usher along the checkout area which I think more stores could use. This didn't affect my rating but if you're Asian like I am and were looking for a general Asian goods store, this isn't it. It is Japanese-specific. read more

A stationary lovers dream. I absolutely adore this location in NYC it is always stocked with so many goodies. The store has three floors- the main floor contains all the books, top floor has a cafe and manga, lower floor has all the Japanese stationery you could ever need. They have such a diverse range of pens from ballpoint, gel, to an excellent collection of fountain pens. My only criticism of the space is it gets so crowded it's sometimes hard to move around, try to get there during off peak hours to avoid this! read more

Kinokuniya has a place in my heart as I've been coming since I was a student and would used to buy Japanese fashion magazines and beauty books. How times have changed with print media! Now, the magazine section is tucked in a smaller corner and they sell a lot more merchandise outside of books in the basement area. There is also an art book section which was previously not there - I enjoyed looking at these plus the magazines on interior design. When I'm in the area, I enjoy coming in to browse and get inspiration. read more

Yesterday I went to the Kinokuniya Bookstore by Bryant Park to look for gifts. I don't often get a chance to stop into this location; usually I'll go to the bookstore in Edgewater. This location has three levels - ground or 1st floor, a 2nd floor, and the basement. I looked at a few cookbooks and history books on the first floor. I then took the escalator a flight up to check out the popular 2nd floor (where there were the most people because all the manga and anime are up there). Then I finished up the trip in the basement - for cards, stationary, and to ogle all their Studio Ghibli merch in stock. Kinokuniya is worth a visit if you are in the area. I've been to the one in NJ which was not that impressive. We were at Bryant park and our son is now interested in Nintendo and pokemon so we went in and was pleasantly surprised. There are 3 floors the bottom floor has stationary, cute toys and Japanese books and magazines. The top floor has a little cafe and you get a good view of Bryant park and the Street. It has models I grew up building, lots of manga. The ground floor has English books as well. It's a fun bookstore especially if you are looking for Japanese stuff. Wife and kid bought a Nintendo magazine for $22 :( but it was shipped from Japan. Fun place to check out even if you are not buying. There is a café on the top floor for a quick bite or drink. The only downside is that there are no spaces/nooks/seating for reading that I could find. Seating parking. Accessible entrance. ((4.5 stars)) Kinokuniya Bookstore can be found right across the street from Bryant Park on Sixth Avenue. the multi-floor store contains Japanese-centric books, manga, collectibles, writing/drawing stuff, and more...plus there's a cafe on the top floor. the store is fairly large and really maintained / organized, but it is full of merchandise which can make it feel cramped when foot traffic is high. while being a Japanese bookstore, the ground level has a good amount of Japanese novels, other types of books, etc., there are still a fair amount of non-Japanese books on this floor. the top floor contains the cafe area as well as manga and collectibles (figures, toys, statues, etc.). the manga selection is pretty wide, but you can find genres in manga that you probably wouldn't find at chain bookstores. had some q's about some manga series bc i was buying a series of gifts...and the staff was very helpful with suggestions. the bottom floor (below street level) is where you can find Japanese stationery, drawing related items, a lot of Studio Ghibli merchandise (plushies, puzzles, and more), and knickknacks. if you have friends or family who are Japanese-culture-philes, then this store is your one-stop-shop for finding great gifts for even the pickiest of recipients. staff here are helpful and patient. lines at checkout move quickly. the store is always busy bc it is filled with tourists, passerby's, locals, and people who are killing time before heading to Bryant Park or who have just left the park. if you are a bibliophile then this is a must for you! read more

What a wonderful 3-decker bookstore! In a city full of really anything you are looking for, it's great to have something unique like this. Bottom floor - Japanese stationary, music, and Knick-knacks. It's a great exploration! Ground level - your bookstores of bookstores with any genre you could want without the chain feel. Top Floor - Manga, vinyls and cafe! It was all so neatly organized but in a way that made you want to look around! We were in search of Sonny Angels and we were directed here. It was super busy and security greeted us as we walked in. Drinks are not allowed so he was also standing there making sure nothing got inside. There were signs directing people to the back as that's where all Sonny Angels were located. What a gem of a bookstore! And it seems others agree with me in this because it was PACKED when I visited during my NYC trip. Kinokuniya Bookstore has three floors, packed with so many goodies. The first floor had a selection of books, ranging from bestsellers to more curated selections. It's what you would typically find in a Barnes & Noble. Upstairs, though, it's packed with manga and graphic novels. If you're passionate about these, this stop is a must. And then the basement held something near and dear to my family -- all things Studio Ghibli! Giant Totoros, other stuffies, books, pencil cases, blankets and so much more. Now, as a word of warning, these items were very expensive. For example, a Studio Ghibli change purse was $30. I don't begrudge the bookstore -- I trust their pricing. But just know before you go. Despite the crowd, I was able to find what I needed and check out quickly. I would excitedly shop here again. read more

I really liked this bookstore! I came a few weeks ago during the holidays, and it was quite packed inside the store. It is located across the street from Bryant park, where a holiday market was taking place, which may have contributed to the business of the store. There was a great selection of manga and other books, and from what I can tell the prices aren't too bad but I am not the best judge of that. The only thing is that they were out of the book I was interested in as the series is popular, so if you are looking for a specific book it may be out of stock. Cute bookstore! I almost didn't bother when I saw it was a Japanese bookstore but they have a large selection of mainstream bookstore picks as well! The bottom floor is dedicated to plushies, toys, and every kind of knickknack your heart could desire. They are pricey but at least it's cute and not a b&n. The main floor is what you'd expect from a typical bookstore, sections of every genre and new hit and plenty of books to browse. The third floor is what I expected when I read Japanese bookstore, mainly anime with a little cafe tucked in the corner. My favorite bookstore of all time. It has all the Western classics, Eastern literature, Japanese magazines, manga, knick-knacks, and more. It's always such a wonder when I visit NYC ever so often to visit Kinokuniya while I'm at it. They're also one of the few physical locations I've found to stock Sonny Angels and Smiskis, so they were very popular items with guests checking out the store. Most titles upstairs in the manga section are wrapped so you have to know what you want before heading to the store, or if you're down to pick up a book blind, that works too. Note: Food and drinks are not allowed in the store (except for the upstairs cafe), so you'll have to place them in the basket(s) by the entrance. read more

Ok so today I went to Kinokuniya because THIS is my absolute favorite Japanese bookstore to go to. I mean I must've visited each time I went to Manhattan. The main level has English/Western books while the lower level has Japanese books, magazines, and stationary. The ambiance is just so calm and relaxing. My absolute favorite level is the top level which has all kinds of anime goods it's a dream guys!!! Manga, anime figures, you name it!!! I'm a huge anime fan so this is perfect!!! They also have a nice cafe that serves various Japanese snacks, foods, and drinks and they can be on the expensive side at times but overall this is such an amazing place. My first time here, it was busy and packed! There are three floors here and each floor is huge ha. The aisles can be a little bit tight but that means more room for books and accessories. There's also way more than books here. The first floor is mainly books and the basement has more books but other items like pens, paper, origami paper, note pads, and much more. The third floor was a lot of anime related as well as a toy section that was pretty good. I was here with my niece to pick up something specific so I wasn't able to explore the store like I would have but I will be back. Hopefully it won't be as busy either. read more

*The* flagship Kinokuniya and this Kinokuniya is amazing! Very organized and has thorough collections on certain brands and characters (the size of the section dedicated to Godzilla is insane lol). First floor is like a general bookstore with items in English (Barnes & Noble-esque). Second floor (take an escalator) is themed on anime and manga; this area is noticeably a bit different compared to that of other Kinokuniyas that I've been to in that this one also includes an extensive variety of Gundam model kits and figurines (I even saw a few figurines from the high-end Play Arts brand!). Additionally there's a basement level, which I almost missed because it's easy to walk past the stairs for it as the stairs are behind book displays; the stairs are located across from the cashier table! This particular level holds Japanese literature, stationery items, plushies, and many other things (said Godzilla section is here!). If you're a Kinokuniya fan this place is a must-visit if you're in NYC! read more

This Japanese bookstore is right across the street from Bryant Park Winter Village. Has already been there for lots of years. It's a decently size, 3-story kind of bookstore. There's also a small cafe on the 3rd floor. It's a good alternative place after strolling around the outdoor holiday market to get away from the cold. A pretty huge selection of comic books/graphic novels in both English and Japanese, cookbooks, lunchboxes, lunch bags, travel books, stationary, utensils, plushies, magazines, tote bags, and other things as well like blind boxes. Prices might vary depending on what you're buying, so you've to really know your prices at the end of the day to see whether it's worthwhile or not. You can pay with either cash or credit/debit card as accepted forms of payment. Fast service from friendly staff. Since I'm such a big fan of Ghibli Studio especially Totoro, I'd to visit downstairs to take a look at what they've to offer. Sure enough, there's actually quite a selection of branded merchandise: Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro, Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service, and No Face from Spirited Away. The highlight of the store is definitely none other than the cutest giant Totoro sitting in the middle of the bookstore. I went over to take pics of the huge Totoro from all different angles. Rubbed his tummy, poked his fur, pulled and fixed his whiskers, and touched his ears. I wish they would sell mini versions of Totoro in store so I can take one home. Bought several pairs of Totoro themed chopsticks afterwards. Even though I'm unable to bring the giant version home with me, at least I can look at Totoro on my chopsticks when I'm eating lunch or dinner at home. I've been going to Kinokuniya for a long time since old location by grand central. It's still my go-to place if I'm looking for a classic Japanese gift or Japanese magazines. The staff is very helpful and has a good knowledge of Japanese books. I feel bad for them now because you can buy a lot of things online for less of the price. read more

This was my first visit in years again- and I liked it a lot better than the one in Edgewater because there's a lot more variety here. Although I will say it did bring with a huge crowd when I stopped by on Friday night. It didn't used to be loud or crowded. But I guess that means it's thriving well, even if it makes it a little harder to navigate/walk through. I also want to shout-out to whoever curated their children's book section. I had fun browsing through books for my nephew and loved their selections-- from food (to be fair, we came after we ate so I don't think we're *that* biased... maybe slightly) topics to rocks, I think they got all the bases covered!! read more

This is a bustling 3-story Japanese bookstore on the west side of Bryant Park. My two teenage sons are manga fans and were thrilled to see the extensive selection (both English and Japanese manga) on the 2nd floor. Each book is wrapped carefully so you can't look inside before purchasing. Access to the 2nd floor is at the very back (escalator goes up to a small cafe). You'll return to the exit by descending a staircase near the back of the manga section. On the 1st floor, you'll see a wide array of books in English. This includes bestsellers you might find at a Barnes & Noble as well as Japanese travel books (I'm a sucker for picture books of Kyoto gardens). The cash register line is quite long but moves briskly with efficient service. In late December 2023, it was very crowded in the bookstore (if you're claustrophobic, this is probably not a good place to visit during peak hours). We almost missed a quick trip to the basement which has a modest selection of Japanese stationery (i.e., gift wrap, mechanical pencils, Japanese calendars, and of course, the A4 translucent plastic covers - which I fondly remember using as a study abroad student in Kanazawa, Japan during the early 1990s). I bought two of these A4 translucent covers ($2 each) and was surprised to see they are now made in Vietnam instead of Japan. Overall, if you like anime, manga, Japanese culture, etc. I would strongly recommend a visit to this Kinokuniya store in New York. read more

If nothing else, this place is a great option to cool off or hide from a sudden pop-up rain shower with endless categories of books to thumb through. Anime lovers should go right to the 2nd floor. Think My Hero Academia and all the most popular animes that are on Crunchyroll and Funamation. There are also artwork books as well that you can better appreciate artist concepts and more. This bookstore makes great use of their space, and you see people of all backgrounds roaming between the aisles. No one approached us as we were browsing around, and we were perfectly okay with that.
