I've passed by this bookshop a lot without knowing what it was but I was in need for some crystals so I searched up on google where I could find some in midtown. Quest Bookshop was the only place that popped up. The location is perfect for me because it's super close to the train and in the area I work in. This bookstore really specializes in spiritual things but theres a lot of information plastered everywhere I didn't feel too lost. They have a lot of stones and they tell you which each one is meant for. I saw in the back someone reading tarot cards and they also have other events like knowing your enneagram which I thought was pretty cool. I don't know much about this bookstore but I feel like it's such a nice staple in midtown that I can really see myself as a regular. read more

This is a serious bookshop devoted to all things spiritual. There is an emphasis on Theosophy (NYC Theosophical Library is upstairs and you can browse books there as well), Buddhism, Hinduism and Sufism. I came in to just look around and if a title grabbed me, I'd get it. Unfortunately that did not happen this time but I was sufficiently impressed with the titles I saw and the general ethos of the place. The library upstairs is small but very solid. It carried mostly older, out of print titles on the world's various spiritual (not religious) traditions. When I went, no one was there at all and aside from the librarian, I had the entire place to myself. I'd say this bookshop is for the sincere seeker and student who have outgrown the New Age scene and want something more serious. Worth a visit. read more

BY FAR the best place to buy crystals in the city. I started stopping in on lunch break because it's near my work. When I got into crystals I figured there'd be better places than this hole in the wall in the heart of midtown but after going to many shops in the city I can say hands down this is the BEST. The quality and size of crystals you can find for very reasonable prices is unmatched. You can find large, palm-sized stones for $5-$15 - even the $5 ones are quite large compared to most places. In the back they have bins of pocket sized stones for $1.50 - but even these can be larger than you'd expect. I've found black tourmaline, pyrite, aquamarine, and many others back there. When compared to the sizes offered for this price at other places it's an incredible deal. I commented on this to the woman who works there and she told me the place is a non-profit. It's near my work so I pop in often and am pleasantly surprised to see new crystals in stock regularly. The vibe there seems a bit stuck in time - this is what new age was before it became fashionable. However the heart of this place and great selection keep me coming back. read more

This place is an oasis for me in a hectic city. You are greeted immediately by a sense of calm and the fragrance of incense. As you move further in, this little bookshop has books covering topics including astrology, shamanism, Sikhism, etc. but you won't find a Bible here. I also like to go to Angella for readings. She uses the Egyptian cartouche cards and is usually spot on or very close about anything I ask about. This bookshop is not everyone's cup of tea. But if you are sort of "occult" minded this is a great place to go that for me is conveniently located. read more

I went here looking for incense, books on meditation, and books by Ram Dass. I had plenty of luck with the incense but not with the books. I think I could've ordered one but I'm a person who gets a book in her head and wants it NOW. Plus I can only get here every few weeks. The shop has a lot of books, and they do have books grouped by religion, including sections on Christianity and Angels, which is different than what some other reviewers posted earlier. I don't know if that's a change or what. Other things I noticed were a nice selection of candles, oils, and Tarot and other cards. The man working was constantly taking calls about what products he had, so it seems like you can ask for things or get them ordered. Oh! They had a nice selection of meditation pillows at good prices. If I hadn't had several miles ahead of me I would've picked up one or two. This is a good, quiet, unassuming bookstore with a lot of fun items. It is also a total surprise considering the neighborhood which is as far from funky as can be in the city. It is very easy to miss since it is slightly recessed from the street and a step below ground. It isn't a large space but it has an interesting mix of books, crystals, tarot plus more. The tarot deck selection is small but filled with tried and true favorites. They also have a good selection of Angel decks by the register. This store has all your spiritual needs. From crystals to books, chakra bowls to candles! Their tarot decks are so beautiful and they have a range of different sizes as well. Prices are not nearly as high as other metaphysical stores I've visited in Manhattan. It feels so comfortable as well, I don't know how long it's been around but it has a true authentic feeling. I've never got a reading from here but I definitely want to, I always hear while I'm wondering around the store and it sounds amazing! I would definitely recommend visiting. This low-key, unassuming bookstore is tucked in the basement of a building that's on a busy restaurant street in East Midtown. I have been down this street many times and have eaten at Peking Duck House (excellent) and also Mantao sandwiches (decent). But if it were not for yelp, I would have completely missed this store. I walk in, and immediately my nose perks up and my brain detects incense. There is something in my brain that links the smell of incense with calm and peace. Thanks Pavlov for making me a believer. The store is small, cozy and filled with tons of metaphysical books. They also sell small trinkets including bracelets, small pamphlets, Buddha statues, Buddha hangings and lots of incense. A woman came out of a door and as soon as she saw me, asked me if I would like a tarot reading. I politely declined, but part of me started to feel eerie. I have never been big on tarot cards and fortune-telling. I believe in the present moment. In any case, I wandered around the store a bit, and although I was the only cutomer in the store, no one felt compelled to talk to me. I was left to my own devices, and I browsed as I pleased. I didn't find any topics that I was particularly drawn to, and I didn't recognize most of the authors or the subjects. Perhaps on my next visit to this area, I will be sure to study the books more at length and get in touch with my inner metaphysical self. read more

I have been visiting this bookshop for many years now. It is small, cozy, and you feel instantly relaxed upon entering. As other reviewers have noted, there is not a huge selection of books, yet I always seem to find something new and interesting to buy with each visit. They also sell incenses, sage, meditation cushions, calendars, cards, posters, gems, oils, jewelry & t-shirts. There is usually a tarot reader in the back ( by appointment, but sometimes you can get a reading on the spot - I've read with Enrique before...he's good). I liked this place. I was greeted when I walked in, but left alone which was nice. Tons of great stuff to choose from and the prices weren't that crazy. Very Eastern based, and not much angel stuff. I will caution those who are getting a reading--there is no privacy. I was shopping while a woman was getting a reading and there was only a thin curtain there. I could hear everything they were saying, and she was speaking about personal stuff. If that's an issue for you, just be aware. Now as for me as a customer listening to that, and being a reader myself, I kept wanting to jump in!! LOL I could feel the woman's energy and was getting messages for her. In terms of esoteric books, this one gets rid of the garbage, and carries only the best. With a knowledgeable staff, ethical readers, frequent classes, and a great location convenient to a lot of subway lines, it's a hidden gem on the East Side. Note: contrary to what one reviewer said, it is NOT in a basement; it is two small steps down from the street level. Caveat: As of 2010, I'm now volunteering at the place (it's a not for profit). Where do I begin. I've purchased books and other products dating back to 2002, but my recent exchange has been less than professional. I called ahead to exchange a book and arrived to discover the exact title was being held. I was told to give it 2 weeks then another 2 weeks and then they explained that it is the distributor they are waiting for. I needed this book for class. If you need a book in a pinch this is not the route to go. Reading the other reviews points out that other services are great. This was a bit hard to spot for me because I didn't actually look for the directions till the last minute but I found it eventually. It's a small shop so it might be hard to spot or maybe I'm just terrible at directions and spotting things to begin with. I walked in and I was surprised by how small it is not in a bad way but I feel it should be bigger given the tight spots I have to inch around and I'm already skinny. I was terrified to knock over anything expensive. That's not necessarily a bad thing anyway IMO because there's only so much space for them. They have a lot of variety of stuff but it seems to me, it specializes more in books and tarot decks. I came here for some crystals and stones which they had a decent small collection of to choose from each one. The prices was fair and the lady (cashier) was very informative on explaining how I should cleanse them. It's really hard to try and not buy the whole store because there's a lot of things to look through. read more

Love this store. It's beautiful. However for those of us who are coming in to learn more, I felt very unwelcome. It was 15 before closing, and I was trying to buy crystals to put in my dressing room at my theatre in the show I'm in. Asked a question about twin souls and was looked at like I had two heads. Asked what bracelets were and he didn't know. An elder man was kind and offered wisdom as well was some of the other customers. I really would like to come back, but I felt very rushed out the door even though it was 15 before closing (had no intention of staying past seven because my curtain is at 8.). I don't feel people who come into a spiritual store looking to buy a bunch of things should be met with apathy and made to feel unwelcome. If the door is open, they should be welcome. Not knowing what a crystal is one thing but being apathetic and trying to shove someone out the door and to not buy something is another. I asked about a book and was met with "I don't know, doubt it). I felt very unwelcome. However I am still giving you four stars because your store is beautiful. And I understand the owner is lovely. I hope to meet her and have a better experience next time. I am not one to write yelp reviews that say negative things and if I had owners info i would call directly, because the store is beautiful. However, I felt like I needed to buy sage from the store to cleanse myself of the annoyed energy I was met with by the person who worked there trying to force me out well before 7pm. I love this place, it's a sweet and serene little oasis smack dab in midtown, a stone's throw from the Citicorp building, so unusual to find anything like it north of Houston. I can't remember how I stumbled upon it, because I can't remember a time when I didn't know Lynn, Michael, and Angela, amongst the nicest and most genuine people I've met. Once you enter, it's hard to believe that this shop is situated where it is, it's a totally different environment than the surrounding area. I buy high quality incense here as well as beautiful and unusual ornaments/tchotchkes that catch my eye while visiting the staff as a break during lunch. It also houses quite an extensive and serious collection of arcane books, oracular items, and is used as a place to conduct readings of different kinds and holds a regular meditation circle. So peaceful and lovely, it always resets my mood just to walk in and browse and converse with the utterly lovely staff. There is also a large crystal inventory for those knowledgeable about gems. read more

I've only visited this shop twice, but it remains one of my favorites for my metaphysical needs! The first trip was when I started getting into stone collecting/crystal healing. That was when I came across tumbled Mookaite, which is now my favorite Jasper! Also bought more stones than I intended to buy, and happy to say that they all remain in my collection. (Stones from other places never stayed; I gave them away because I couldn't connect with them. But the stones from Quest have always resonated with me!) The second trip was when I was coming back to tarot. I expected to just check out the decks inside the glass casing, but then I saw the Aquarian Tarot (2006 printing of the original 1970 print). It cost half of what it was being sold online! I knew I had to get this new deck (to go along with the Rider-Waite I have), especially since I'm an Aquarius. In both cases, I felt very at ease in this shop. I was granted time and space to browse and consider the items I picked up (and put back sometimes). It's like I am told to get what I *need*, not what I think is super cool or anything like that. Looking forward to a third (and more) trip(s)!! read more

She came to the point and shocked me a few times coming up with specific people with specific situations. There's was never any 'fishing' for information.
