We weren't allowed to go down the kid slides with our toddler (even the one that is wide enough for four people is one person at a time, even tiny kids). The lifeguard assured me that he would catch my son at the bottom and then hold him until I could get him. Well, my son started down the slide and got stuck. The lifeguards wouldn't let my husband slide down to him to unstick him, but instead insisted on walking down themselves. One lifeguard got him going, but then he got stuck again. The lifeguard from the bottom walked up, put my son on his lap, and rode down with him. How this was any more effective than allowing my husband to either A. ride with him in the first place or B. slide down and ride with him when he got stuck (just like the lifeguard did) is beyond me. Also, there was a ton of flirting and horseplay from the lifeguards. They were not professional. And the music being broadcasted is from a lifeguard's iPod and little speaker set. They frequently change a song halfway through or skip songs. The concession stand prices and food are decent, but expect microwaved hot dogs/corn dogs. Overall this is an okay place to go for the price, but I much prefer Chisholm Park and will go there from now on.

Our room was exceptionally clean, the bed was incredibly comfortable, and the AC worked amazingly well--which is always appreciated during a Texas summer! There are also so many on-site activities that a two-night stay isn't even close to being long enough to enjoy everything this hotel has to offer. The food options throughout the property are plentiful, although they are definitely pricey, which is somewhat expected at a resort-style hotel. We spent most of our days at the on-site water park with kids ages 3, 10, and 13, and every single one of them had a great time! The water park itself was clean and well maintained. The only exception was some trash left behind by departing guests, which obviously isn't the hotel's fault. There are plenty of trash receptacles throughout the area, so it's frustrating to see people leave their trash behind rather than walk a few feet to throw it away. I also want to specifically recognize Diego at the water park. He was incredibly welcoming, friendly, and professional and really stood out during our stay. He represented the hotel extremely well! Unfortunately, the biggest negative for me involved two separate encounters regarding tipping. The first was with the bellhop who brought our luggage to our room. Once we arrived, he told us he was supposed to inform guests that this was a "tipping service." Of course I understand that bell service is traditionally tipped--I actually already had his tip in my hand while we were walking to the room. But being directly told that it was a tipping service felt unnecessary and honestly a little classless. A tip should be given for good service, not something a guest should feel pressured into giving. The second incident happened at the water park snack bar and bothered me even more. The chips are sitting on shelves directly in front of the cashier window. We picked up two individual bags of chips ourselves and brought them to the window to pay. The team member told me that an automatic 20% gratuity would be added to the purchase. I asked, "20% for you to ring them up?" There was no food preparation, table service, delivery, or really any service involved beyond ringing up two pre-packaged bags of chips that we picked up ourselves. I told him I would prefer to add my own tip, and he said that wasn't possible because the 20% gratuity was automatically added. What made this even more confusing was that I had made two other purchases at the same location the day before, was allowed to add my own tip, and an automatic 20% gratuity was never mentioned. Nearly $11 for one single-serving bag of Funyuns and one single-serving bag of Cheetos is already a premium price. Adding a mandatory 20% gratuity for simply ringing up two bags of chips feels excessive. I am absolutely someone who believes in tipping well for good service. What I don't appreciate is feeling pressured or told that I am required to tip, especially in situations where there is little to no actual service being provided. Both encounters left a bad taste and felt out of place for a hotel of this caliber. Overall, though, we really enjoyed the Hilton Anatole. It is a gorgeous property, our room was wonderful, the kids loved the water park, and there is truly so much to do. With a little more consistency and transparency regarding the hotel's gratuity policies, our experience would have been even better.

I haven't been over to the waterpark side of things yet, so I can only tell you about the side with the playground, swings, windy-walking path, and fields. It's nestled amongst residential streets and really feels very private despite being bordered by a nearby apartment complex. There's pretty good shade, too. The parking lot closest to the playground is tiny, but there are more spots near the waterpark which is only a short walk away. It might be helpful to note that there is limited seating. Maybe consider a picnic blanket if you're wanting to hang out awhile.

But we went to Howard Moore because she is almost 4 and the deepest this play pool goes to is 1.5 ft. So she got in free with her Swim Pass and I was only charged $2.50! I felt comfortable watching her from the side bc the lifeguards there actually do their jobs! Multiple times I saw the teenagers on duty remind kids to go up the slide using the steps, not crawling back up the tunnel, and to go down feet first after a small boy slid down head-first into a foot of water and struggled to stand up. Cheers to you, lifeguards! Because this pool is so perfect for younger kids, we shared it with 2-3 daycares during our first hour there, each with 8-12 kids, some big, some small. The lady sitting next to me gathered her 3 kids shortly after an older group arrived and explained to her son that, "It's time to go because your little sister got trampled 3 times in the last 5 mins." So be warned. Also their bathrooms are about what you'd expect from park bathrooms (dingy but useable) and the water was extremely cold. Nevertheless, it's a hidden haven of fun for a nominal fee. This first experience with the city's play pool gives me hope for all the others!

NRH2O isn't nearly as big as Hurricane Harbor, but I prefer it for several reasons. For one, there are quite a few trees and grassy areas all throughout the park, providing shade and cooler grounds and all around cooler, happier vibes. Plus, tickets and passes are more affordable, and perhaps most importantly (especially to anyone with special dietary needs): you're allowed to bring in your own food and drink. Of course there are limitations on ice chest size and you can't bring in glass containers or alcohol, but it's so nice to be able to pack your own snacks and drinks. Not in loose ice, though, that's another rule. Your ice has to be bagged up (we just use ice-packs). Employees check through your bags very thoroughly at the entrance. I haven't been on any of the bigger slides in years, I now stick to the kiddie-spaces or the lazy river. I was in the wave pool recently with my niece and didn't have as much fun as I remember having when I was younger, haha. The park overall is pretty clean and well-maintained. Nothing looks like it desperately needs refurbished or sanitized! There are I believe 3 different "restaurants" onsite and then a handful of drink and dessert stands. You can find aaaall of your theme park favorites: hot dogs, corn dogs, burgers, chicken tenders, fries, nachos, quesadillas, pizza, pretzels, cotton candy, chips, kettle corn, etc. There's also frozen lemonade, dippin' dots ice cream, and a churro food truck onsite! You'll have a great time at NRH2O if it's not ridiculously crowded and you're able to find yourself a little home-base with shade. You can reserve canopies and tables online, but they go fast!
