Paronychia of the Finger…read more I received a manicure by Kayla at SS Beauty Salon in Tallahassee, FL on Oct. 30. A week 1/2 later my right middle finger began to feel painful to the touch. I put ice on it as I wasn't sure what was the cause. Two days later, my finger was swollen and a red lesion had formed at the cuticle. My finger also began to turn dark and I was unable to bend it. I took the day off work (Thurs. Nov 14) because of the pain. I could not type. I attempted to work on Fri. Nov. 15 but my finger was so swollen. I left work and was able to get an urgent care appointment the next morning. When I arrived at urgent care, the doctor immediately told me that she needed to cut and drain my finger because an infection caused by damage to my cuticle had spread. The physician had to inject my finger with a needle to insert numbing medication for the pain. She then had to make an incision and slice my finger with a blade to drain the puss. The doctor informed me that there was so much puss that she wanted to send a culture of the puss and sample of my blood to a lab for testing to make sure the infection had not gotten into my blood. She said that she had seen cases like this before from salons and the cause was most likely due to my cuticles being cut too far with unclean utensils like cuticle cutters or nail clippers. The doctor also told me that the infection had been in my system for approx. 2 weeks since the appointment and if I had waited to treat the infection would most likely spread down to the middle of my finger. She told me to contact the salon owner and make them aware. She placed me on constant antibiotics for one week and informed me I would need a follow up appointment. When I got home, I immediately contacted the nail tech and informed her of what happened via Instagram. She was apologetic and willing to refund my service as well as discuss some type of compensation for my missed time at work. I make $25.50 an hour and missed 12 hours. That combined with just the initial doctors visit the service itself was enough to justify at least $350 in the event they were willing to do something in addition to the service. She called me and we spoke over the phone and told me that she did not have a lot of money. I told her that it was ok and I understood if she didn't want to pay for anything additional until I had paperwork that I would get on Monday. I said that I didn't want to badmouth her but I did at least want the refund and the $5 tip I left and I would provide documentation to the salon on Monday. Moments after, she informed me that she would not be issuing my refund for the service at all and was not willing to discuss a private agreement. She (nail tech) also deleted apologetic messages sent through Instagram. When I checked my Instagram account I saw where the owner of the salon Shannon Sherrell had blocked me from the Instagram business page. I told the nail tech that I noticed the deleted comment and the blocked IG account. Soon after, the owner of the salon contacted me via text and refused to admit negligence. I told her that if she didn't want to take responsibility for being the primary and most likely cause of my infection, the least she could do at the moment was refund the service. She refused. I informed her that not only was I at least entitled to a refund. At that moment I realized that the salon owner and nail tech intended on being dishonest. The salon owner refused to refund my service, had the audacity to offer me another nail service, and told me to have a nice day. The dishonesty of deliberately deleting comments and refusing a refund AND the tip I left shows a blatant lack of integrity. I'm sure one would feel the same way if their finger was being lanced and drained due to an infection by a nail salon.
