Like. Most newspapers WW is a thin shadow of what it once was. Still it has tried to preserve what it was best at. It has been far more successful than say the Oregonian. The paper has a mix of regular features ( ask Dr Know your questions.) Articles on current events, and listings for things to do. I no longer read every issue. But I'm still a fan. read more

The only value in picking this up is to see the event days and times in the ads. There is no value in the writing, or articles. And what do you expect when they don't pay a living wage that someone can afford to write for a living and not have 2 other jobs? This is only for the profit of their ads and is a waste of trees and effort. The articles are trash. The Best of Portland guide- is ok. But that is mostly just advertising for best restaurants, with "Best local celebrities" thrown in. Beer, Pizza, tacos, hamburger, weeks and so on are just ad campaigns. The Mercury is the better of the 2, local, free .magazines. The Mercury is funnier, more entertaining, and better written. read more

I heart the Willy Week. Cheeky articles (and most have objective journalistic writing--a rarity in today's media), snarky reviews, and lots of band advertisements that let me know who's coming to town (it sure beats getting stupid Ticketmaster e-mails!!). I am fortunate this weekly delivers to my work campus, so I can just walk down to the cafeteria and pick it up. :) read more

Another one of Portland's free newspapers. This one seems to be put together well. I am usually in to these newspapers for concert announcements and films but the way the articles are constructed makes me not discard this newspaper so quickly once I have gone through it once. read more

The Willamette Week has the rare distinction of being one of the only weeklies ever to win a Pulitzer Prize. This happened a few years ago, for its coverage of the long-suppressed Goldschmidt scandal. Disclosure/sour grapes note: pre-Pulitzer Nigel Jacquiss once interviewed me over the phone for a part-time, unpaid internship at the WWeek and flipped me attitude right and left, asked questions like, "What was the last great book you read?" and then cut me off mid-answer. I was completely unsurprised when I was not offered the internship, but found it pretty hilarious that an interview for an unpaid job making Starbucks runs was conducted in such a high-pressure, attitudinal manner. I'd add the paper also takes itself a little too seriously given that, for every real, investigative news piece they run on the cover, there's something about the "raging controversy" over the Brazilian wax versus the,uh, au naturel look. That said, for the most part they've earned the right to take themselves seriously, with a good weekly roundup of local news, as well as very decent A & E coverage. Geared toward a slightly older, more serious audience than the Merc, but only slightly. read more

Willamette Week is Portland's free publication- in some ways, it's better than the Oregonian and reads like a Portlandia sketch- http://www.wweek.com/restaurants/2016/07/25/vegans-target-artisanal-mini-doughnut-shop-over-omnivorous-job-posting/ You are informed that Portland will get a combo coffee shop/S&M club- http://www.wweek.com/restaurants/2016/07/25/portland-is-about-to-get-its-first-sm-club-and-coffee-shop/ (San Francisco has places like Power Exchange and $15 cups of coffee, but they don't combine the two) They have an entire section dedicated to cannabis since this is Portland, along with "stripper beauty tips." You learn that the Oregon delegation to the DNC trumped places like California with their number of transgender delegates- http://www.wweek.com/news/2016/08/02/oregon-sent-more-transgender-delegates-to-the-dnc-than-any-other-state/ Willamette Week is more in tune with Oregon's progressive, kinky, downright "Keep Portland Weird" side. They discuss serious issues like homelessness, rent hikes, salaries. A fun, fascinating read. read more

BEWARE SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS! It looks like Willy Week has just put out their first "Hit List". I can't believe they put together such a thing targeting a specific sector of Portland's small business. Who is next? Coffee shops? Book stores? Day care centers? Tattoo artists? Barber shops and hair salons? I am a local small business owner and I am concerned they may want to target my profession. I am pulling my advertising dollars with them and I highly recommend you do the same. They DON'T support US. They apparently use us for fodder. read more

I pick up the Willamette Weekly every week. What can I say? I love it. I like the Portland Mercury better... thanks to Dan Savage. However, the Willamette Weekly used to be my favorite because they advertised what places had open mics. Unfortunately, the past couple weeks, they have taken out, or failed to include, this feature so I am a bit POed. Other then that ... I really enjoyed the BEST OF PDX issue. read more

Fake news! #fakenews I got the cover story, and it's mostly lies to make me look bad. Reporter (Corey Pein) didn't use a digital voice recorder, so he made up a negative story about a positive person. #WillametteWeek should give back their Pulitzer Prize. Free weekly tabloid found in Portland and Vancouver paper machines, coffee shops, restaurants and lobbies. Every now and then they run a article that I've not seen elsewhere. To me it's a must read publication. read more

Most of the writers published in this quarterly aren't aiming to be The Next Big Thing In The Publishing World, although they certainly have the talent to become just that. They're writing for writing's sake, and their work reflects that fact. Usually themed, Tin House Magazine packs a punch with its unique offerings in fiction, poetry and the art of the essay. It's a wonder that this magazine isn't available on newsstands everywhere, but then again its Fall 2009 issue, the doubly-themed "Hope/Dread," featured a brilliant sun on one side and a menacing devil on the other, and the literature was chosen accordingly. Try putting that out there on the same rack with Cosmo and see which one sells faster. But then again, Tin House isn't about sales, at least not in the conventional publishing sense. They are all about good literature, and they're not afraid to publish good literature. In a world gone mad - or at the very least, dominated by popular fiction that's often not worth the paper it's printed on - Tin House is a breath of fresh air. Sometimes strange, often different, usually thought-provoking air, but fresh air all the same. Can I get an "Amen" to that?

Students and literary fans come for workshops from all over the country. It doesn't get better to sit at the bog at Reed while your most favorite authors read their work! And I almost feel like I am at adult summer camp or some Ivy League east coast campus for that one week in July!

Just Out is a bi-monthly (no pun intended) local newspaper here in Portland that emphasizes GLBT…read morenews and issues, but is a great read for anyone who enjoys great writing and (occasionally) risk-taking journalism. My company (a high-end car dealership) has advertised with Just Out for several years, and this review is limited to my experience advertising with the paper. I love reading it too, but that's another review.... What we sell, primarily, is the high end of mid-range cars. BMW 3 series, Audi A4's, Volvo's, C-Class Mercedes, etc. We've tried several ad venues over the years; what we've found is that in addition to the flexibility, attention to our needs, and on-the-spot professionalism we've experienced with the Just Out staff, the return is simply unbeatable. Every time one of our Just Out ads comes out, our phone rings -- and we are able to connect with people who want to buy our cars. I think our success with Just Out has a lot to do with their demographic, which is both relatively better educated than average and relatively wealthy, and our style -- Just Out's readers are smart and looking for both value and quality -- but if you can please their readers consistently, they will send you more business than you can handle. When you're considering the circulation vs. $$, they seem a bit pricey, but if you look closely at the return (as all of us business owners have done these last two years, if we're still business owners) you'll see that they're the most effective and cheapest way to get your name and your product/service out there. We'll continue to advertise with Just Out as long as they continue to rock like they have for us. Personal props to Larry Lewis, the sales director, for all the time he's taken to give honest feedback on our ads, and his staff who have helped him make our relationship so successful. The internet offering id substandard when compared to other sites. They could hire someone with skills to correct the continuing errors, but they do not. The WW is tight with the OLCC. If you read the other reviews, one reader mentions the WW "Hit List" this is one of the issues with the WW. Still giving it two stars though as how it is a free publication all over town. Cannot give it 3 starts as it really should now be the Washington Week as it caters to Beavertonians, Republicans, and the anti-marijuanaics. BEWARE SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS! Small businesses have been pulling ads because of WW "hit list" game. One example of the WW acting like secret police is the Beervana Buzz: Who killed Dean's Scene article. Pete Dunlap ends his article blaming a victim harassment for agreeing to be interviewed by the WW, Willamette Week. REMEMBER NEVER LET THE WW INTERVIEW YOU (according to Pete Dunlap). It's a nice piece all about blaming someone who became victimized for ever giving the WW the time of day. The article gloats- puts down it's readers and beer geeks, which is odd because the column is called Beervana Buzz. The WW staff are just very uncool. The Beervana Buzz "reporters" went to a home brewers home, and then reported to the OLCC that the brewer makes 30 gallons of beer a week, which is a BIG exaggeration. Anyhow WW covers beer because Portland loves beer- it would be great if their Beervana Buzz were not acting as secret police for the OLCC. Pete Dunlap stated in the article Who killed Dean's Scene? that a reporter's job was just to pay bills. It is odd when someone brags about having no ethics or morality like it somehow makes them more clever or alpha than the rest of us. WW covered the closing of Dean's home-brewery like they had somehow done a public service. Dean's crime was that instead of running a for profit bar, he had people over for drinks, brewed beer, and had a donation box in case people wanted to help out. The WW found this unacceptable. In fact they published the PRIVATE LETTER SENT TO DEAN FROM THE OLCC- it is still on line. Know what's creeper than having a "news paper" post your private mail online? How did the WW get the letter? How are they so close to the OLCC? Dean's PRIVATE OLCC letter states in the legal letter that the WW posted that an unrevealed media report was the tip off source for OLCC needed to take action. Wonder who the mystery media was? Pete Dunlap seems proud to state that journalists have no responsibility for obvious consequences, no social or moral obligations, and in fact their only obligation is to pay their bills (evidently by any means necessary.) Guess it reads well with the WW base. The WW having the column Beervana Buzz is ridiculous considering the fact that their reporters have gone to the OLCC is hopes of making news with their inaccurate, exaggerating informants. Then they kept gleefully reporting on how this wonderful place was closing due to their interview. FYI I remember a time when I really respected this publication. I never missed a issue for many years. That was back in the old days before it eliminated any/all staff that were not deemed conservative enough. At this point their reader base has shrunk so much in Portland, that they should really just drop the Willamette, and rebrand to fit their actual base and agenda: The Washington Week for all the Trump loving folks over in Beaverton. read more

Portland Really Really needs a new arts and entertainment paper. Passive agressive journalism written by the mean kids from your high school. A number of articles and commentary that slides just under the radar of being neighborhood elitist, classiest, ageist, and subtley R. Some people can pick up the slights others may not. Likes to keep stereotyping as a cornerstone of their journalistic style. Talks out both sides of it's mouth. Makes fun of all the other neighborhood in portland that are not inner SE. If you don't live in their neighoborhood and go to their deemed cool bars and restaurants you are not cool. Needs to grow up and needs a spanking. Who approves this crap before it is pressed? How can you look in the mirror at yourself everyday? When you reach your 40's you will regret writing and slighting those of your smug youth. Learn to be inclusive and not exclusive. Portland metro area has more to offer as a whole if you just open your heart, mind, and eyes. read more

As a local paper - its awesome and at times hillarious - a much needed change from the norm. For the low down on events in portland - Wweek is hands down the best. They've got indepth reporting on issues and scandals that are local and more interesting that the dribble printed in the other more traditional papers. Definitly aimed at a younger hipper demographic and I appreciate that. I think they could improve by investing more into their website, its hard to navigate and laout could be better. read more
