5 Star because I listen to OPB radio everyday. There are some shows I don't care about that I don't need to mention, but aside from two on Sat the weekday lineup is solid. I recently was surprised at a lack of journalistic integrity in a local story, but considering I have listened to 1000's of stories over the years from OPB I'll let it go as I do think they are serious about serving the whole state and SW Washington. I appreciate that. I watch the two tv stations that they have but I don't use cable so sometimes I can't get good reception. Even so, I love Frontline, Nova and Amanpour and company. This station was once the hallmark of fair and unbiased news. As much as any human being can be fair and unbiased, OPB reporters' middle lean unfortunately is in decline. Some of their shows push the limit a little to the left, but in the last year it is decidedly more to the far right. Their counterparts over on NPR are pandering to the right even more. Steve Inskeep and Michel Martin are leading the way. They constant roll on Trump so-called (oxymoron) experts and supporters (cult members) for comment (who wants to hear it? And do these ppl contribute? Oh hell no). I suspect fear of losing the last of their funding under Trump is likely at the root of all of this. Some of their programming is beyond awful. Think Out Loud is more like Dave Miller has a Sound Bite job, and Luke Burbank and the ever shrill Elaine Passerali on LiveWire are a wretched excuse for wasting an hour of your life. read more

I have big love for OPB and NPR. Even though it is 'free programming', I gladly donate every year. Where to begin... **Car Talk - maybe one day I'll call Click and Clack and audibly demonstrate my car's quirks (eeeoooirrr) or have them resolve a marital disagreement (their specialty) regarding my car. Even their show credits are funny. **Fresh Air - Terry Gross is the witty, sophisticated aunt in the big city I wish I had. Listening to her makes me feel smarter and more open minded. She also had one of the funniest interviews EVER with Gene Simmons (KISS) which was subsequently removed from the website for "legal reasons." **Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me - The rotating group of panelists (Go Paula!) and Bluff the Listener game are a hoot. I want Carl Kasell on my home answering machine. **Whad'ya Know - Michael Feldman had the best self deprecating wit in the business. Don't watch as much OPB as I used to when the kids were little (loved the programming without commercials for the latest toys). Some of my all-time favorite programs were Frontier House and Pioneer House. These were educational-based reality programs when people had to live in the olden (definitely not golden) days. No matter how much crap is on television today, its nice to know there is local programming out there that still exudes plenty of quality. Quality not because of television's lame standards but because of actual enlightenment achieved from the amazing programming. That's right, smart folks will watch and listen to OPB for all things from science to finance and learn something in the process. During my brief stint in private school, the school faculty had recommended to parents to forbid their kids from watching MTV and encourage watching OPB instead. As nerdy as it was to listen to NPR and watch a broadcast version of the Discovery Channel, I was always intrigued and impressed with the content OPB had to offer. I'm not sure if it made me smarter, but it certainly allowed me to recognize what was quality programming that extended beyond cartoons. Nowadays, it might just be the only thing worth checking out on television and radio. read more

OPB ostensibly maintains a presence in the Eugene/Springfield community through it's radio station KOPB, at 1600 on the AM dial. I say "ostensibly" because, even though they do indeed broadcast on that frequency in this area, KOPB has no physical address; no phone; no email address; and no personnel in the Eugene/Springfield area. Indeed, all they seem to be is a frequency on the dial, with no way to contact them. That might be acceptable if KOPB did its job in the community it is ostensibly serving; alas, it does not. What KOPB programming doesn't come out of New York, apparently comes out of Portland. Even that wouldn't necessarily be a problem if they station would at least cover major local news events, but it doesn't. For some reason OPB seems reluctant to even mention "Eugene" or "Springfield" unless a story in the area has been picked up nationally on NPR. In the past 2 years there have been two major weather emergencies, each closing down local businesses and services for a week or more -- and not the slightest mention on KOPB. We're given the traffic conditions on Terwilliger in Portland, but major road closures, construction detours, and even fatal accidents in the area are all apparently beneath KOPB's notice. We even get slighted in the 30-second weather announcements between programs. I hear the temperature in Portland; on the coast; in the mountains; and even as far away as Bend -- but never a peep about the current temperature in Eugene or Springfield. Being the third (and often the second) largest population center in the state, I find this omission inexcusable. Attempts to contact OPB about this situation have been met with resounding silence. Currently, OPB is engaged in one of their many fund-raising events, daily soliciting my contribution for the "valuable community service" they provide. Except, they aren't providing it in MY community, so why would I want to contribute? We already get most of the same NPR fare via a local station which DOES have an actual physical presence in the community (KLCC), and I could take or leave KOPB's many New York-originated programs (if I wanted to hear NY programming every day, I would have stayed in NY, where I grew up). Frankly, if KOPB has no interest in serving my community, I'd rather they pull KOPB off the air altogether, and free up the frequency for a local station that \does\ provide important information about the local area. If OPB feels so strongly that their home is in Portland, then let them stay in Portland. read more

OPB is one of the few great public TV stations. They have documentaries like "The Oregon Experience" (one of their episodes was a compelling one about Rancho Rajneesh in Antelope), and Oregon Field Guide with Steve Amen has been a favorite for nearly 3 decades. Oregon Field Guide celebrates the natural beauty of the state- from ascending Mt. Washington, to following salmon runs, and braving stormy Heceta Head. Oddly, they have a better assortment of cooking shows than KQED, tho it's not far from the Napa Valley&has had Michael Chiarello's show out of Yountville. OPB is highlighting more local shows, what makes Oregon unique... why it was the destination at the end of the Oregon Trail. The only radio station I listen to, and usually the only TV station. I don't have cable but I happily part with some of my money every month for these guys (OPB Passport is a nice plus). Only downside is the radio station is too frequently spending minutes on money drives. read more

I love OPB, while it seems there are hundreds of stations all playing shows with the same few ideas, OPB stands out. My favorites are the British shows. Downton Abbey, the comedies, they are different from american shows. They also have news, locally made shows....the list goes on, and I am a fan! I have been a fan for my whole life, OPB still shows great programing for kids. They seem to have something for everyone! All age appropriate. read more

Before I have to break out the Blues Brothers protective cage to fend off rotting produce and empty beer bottles, hear me out. We all know OPB's programming rocks. I wake up to NPR every day and Frontline, Oregon Art Beat, and Antiques Road Show, what's not to love? In fact, I love them so much that I wanted to DTR (define the relationship). Go all the way and put some structure to it. I wanted to PLEDGE MONEY, dammit. I don't tithe to a church but I think something like OPB is worthy of percentage of our salaries, seriously. And I had one condition, NO JUNK MAIL. I've dedicated my life to stopping junk mail. I feel like it's littering and if you put a phone book on my porch, I will hunt you like you were the world's most dangerous animal. So I told them my terms. I held up my end. They didn't. I wrote the membership director. Catalogs and scheduling magazines continued to pollute my mailbox. I made them give me my pledge back. I had terms and they didn't live up to them. Please, I beg you, vote with your voice AND your dollars. During the next membership drives, tell OPB that you want to offer your support, but that you will not do so unless you are guaranteed that doing so will be consistent with your values, particularly if they are to leave a light footprint on this earth. read more

"...CONVENTION WHERE CLINTON WILL RELEASE HER DELEGATES TO BARACK OBAMA. BUT WILL..." Screamed the stereo at 7.15 this morning when I started my car to head to work. I had left the radio on NPR/OPB last night as "In House" was on, a cool show dedicated to local indie music without hype. Given these parameters, one would understand the volume at which my radio was set, as well as how exaggerated it seemed due to the sleepy Monday morning commute. While there are weekly shows that I try my best not to miss, such as Wait Wait Don't Tell Me! and A Prairie Home Companion, being able to flip on the station for a few minutes of world news or intelligent discussion on the latest topic without having the phrase "trash" or "celebrity sleaze" is kind of nice. I really appreciate they variety of programs offered around the clock and throughout the week. Their streaming station of Music 24/7 is a welcome addition to my already bookmarked Pandora and 94.7too stations to listen to around the house or at school/work. But until I get to my computer, or install one of those fancy HD radios, cruising down SR-14 to Morning Edition at an unreasonable volume will be just as much fun too. read more

Every day, everyday, I think to myself, 'Yelp OPB'. I'm listening to it in the morning when I'm feeding the perro and myself. I'm listening while I drive to Gresham. Listening between buildings at work. Listening on the drive home. Always. Why? Because it's good. So what if it's lefty. I'm lefty. My new favorite, this Think Out Loud segment.. all Oregon issues, on at 9am. Well balanced and pertinent. I want to hide in a corner during pledge drives, sure. But somehow I throw down the $50 a year for my monthly OPB guide... and I secretly want to win the Backyard Bird Shop gift certificate drawing. And Frontline will smack you in the face. And Nature (when it's an old one with George Page narrating) will transport you to Africa. And Car Talk.. well, lets just say that I went to Harvard Square hoping to see those two. read more

KOPB/OPB has to be one of the premier NPR affiliated radio stations in the country. They cover the world through NPR and their alliance with BBC World Service plus they do terrific state and local level reporting across a variety of public service and news programs which can be found online and downloaded. There may be other stations that do more, but few who embody the spirit of quality public journalism like KOPB. I love this station, listen to it all the time - even online - and have it permanently programmed into my Swede Machine's stereo. Specifically, this is a review of opbmusic.org. As mentioned by Brandy S., opbmusic.org streams 24/7, or it is also available on HD radio. They feature a lot of Portland and other NW groups along with new music from all over the globe. opbmusic.org also provides info on local music venues and who's playing where. Take a listen - I'm really enjoying it. Exposing me to local music groups - a definite plus. If you want to know what kind of music they play, go on-line and look at "this hour's full playlist". I listen to OPB constantly and it really keeps me up to date of stuff going on around Portland, Oregon, and the Pac NW. I enjoy Day to Day; Wait, Wait Don't Tell (the NPR news quiz); Market Place; Car Talk; The World; BBC; ATC (that's All Thing's Considered for you non-NPR geeks); and This American Life. I volunteered here during the last fund drive and it is painful to listen to, but its a more fun to participate by taking pledges. It is kinda fun because every volunteer goes through a little training video on the Apple software because there are like 30 Apple laptops set up for every volunteer. The program prompts you through the process and the questions you should be asking the caller. You could also call out to friends and family to see if they'd like to volunteer, I like to call it the "Dead Beat Call-out." If you get some pledges from call-outs you get a little gift at the end of you shift. Other perks include donuts from Sesame Donuts, coffee, pop, water, cookies, fruit, and stuff to nosh on during regular programming and chat with other volunteers or read the newspaper. I own a television. This is something I've had to come to grips with over the past couple of years. Once firmly set against the idea, I gave in to the fact that watching movies is just far too fun/cheap a way to spend an evening for me to ignore. Besides, how could i give up the chance to see Keith Carradine in HD fencing away with Harvey Keitel (see The Duelists). Now after buying my television, I set it up, and stood staring at the RF connector on the back. I knew it was there in all it's cheesy television glory. Crazy evangelicals, bizarre hispanic game shows, and brain-caustic primetime TV shows were just a plug away. I outstretched my dipole, preformed a copulative thrust from male to female plug, and instructed my HDTV to scan for channels. Much to my surprise, OPB was my reward for tarnishing my monitor with local broadcasts. I found documentaries on little known Oregonian lore, jazz musics, and even a little old house that needs repair every weekend only to find a bunch of handy-men-at-arms ready to explain how to build a patio or install a laundry sink. So what did I learn? Perhaps the question should be "what am I still learning?". Just because you are sick to death of modern day television, forbear that cantankerous waving fist! Turn to channel 10 (which oddly has 3 channels now) and enjoy your local variety. You can even trot over to their inter-webs pages to see what's playing. My wife and I love OPB and watch it's tv programing and I listen to KMHD all the time. We have been contributors for five years plus. Lately we have had to make some tough decisions and one of them was to stop our monthly contributions to OPB. What I have found out and is why I writing this review is that the money side of OPB is, in our experience in the last few weeks, extremely aggressive. We allowed them to take funds out regularly every month off a credit card. When we decided to cancel our subscription...we both found that their web site does everything to take your money and nothing to cancel. There is virtually no where in the programing of their web site that allows you to cancel on your own accord. So what you have to do is send them a request on a form they have spun up and submit it like an email. Well...the only response we have gotten is robotic/automated email replies saying "we will get back to you" basically. Three weeks later...nothing. So we shut down the credit card and ordered a new one. OPB found that second card and started sucking off of that so that way won't work. Just the other night we called our credit card company and explained the situation. We asked to shut the access to our card with OPB down. Our representative told us that there are basically two catagories when doing this auto withdrawal thing. One is that the company allows you to close the account down between you and your credit card company if you decide. How generous. Option two is that the business has a lock on the account and the only way you can close it is going directly through the business in this case OPB. Catch 22! So we finally were told that we could dispute the charges and that will automatically put the funds right back in our account as soon as OPB extracts it. I find these kind of tactics horribly aggressive and I am embarrassed for OPB for preforming this way. They boast themselves as a leader in the community. I don't find people that put others in a choke hold to take their money to be any leader I will follow. OPB is a company that started out as an educational platform and still markets itself that way. Well...the only education OPB has given me is what not to do when offering to make donations especially auto draws out of any particular source. I say shame on them I will NEVER give them another dime for anything. I would suggest anyone reading this that is considering doing the same to NOT. Buyer be ware... read more

This is the only public radio station I've ever devoted my dollars toward. Really, just about as good as it gets. I think the only competition OPB gets as far as great programming is from Minnesota Public Radio (also excellent). Oregon folks...be happy you have such great programming! Seattle folks just have to envy you as their public radio is not even close to as good as OPB. read more

Hi- I'm a long-time, very happily coontributing listener. Truly. I'm writing to express some frustration. ...just listen to an article about Whitney Houston's wonderful, well-storied rendition of the Star Spangled Banner...an entire article...yet the entire performance was not played...the interview lost half of its meaning...What a disappointment..(This type of thing has happened before.) Of course, the commentary and analysis are are informative and inspiring, but the subject would have added 2 min to the broadcast. What a shame. :- { read more

I like OPB programming and especially their relatively unbiased news. It is one of the few places I can find reliable news. BUT!!! Years ago I made the mistake of donating to the organization once, feeling guilty about being a "free rider." It was a one-time-only contribution, and since then I have been inundated by aggressive mail requests for more money, the postage alone has to add up to several times my original donation. Lately (for the last year or so) these solicitations come in a windowed envelope with a pink letter inside; you know, the kind you get when you have an overdue bill. Apparently they think this will shame me into sending them more money. NOT SO! I just want them to LEAVE ME ALONE! I recommend that you never donate to this "not for profit" organization; they will never leave you alone again. I'm expecting them to garnish my paycheck any time now... :-) read more

Nothing gets me through the workday like hours upon hours of news talk radio through OPB.org. I'm surprised that I would ever say that, but honestly, what's better? From Morning Edition to All Things Considered and beyond, NPR and OPB offer insightful programming that fills the hole that was so yearning when I was stuck watching MSNBC for my news. Before I moved down here, I was stuck listening to bits and pieces of All Things Considered (basically the only NPR show KPLU in Tacoma played) between pizza deliveries. I'll trade the tips I made for the full ATC (and everything else) experience anyday. read more

I HEART NPR!!! I cannot get enough of Car Talk, Whaddya Know, This American Life and sometimes I even listen to philosophy talk or prarie home companion. I didn't realize how much I love that radio station until I moved into a house with a TV (big up to Cara!) and at the same time my car stereo shut down. Well, not so much shut down. Its broken and stuck at NPR at a fairly high volume, but it comes on about every third time I turn on the car. Pretty awesome. OPB is the Oregon station that brings us NPR and it also offers a tv channel. The only show I know is Oregon Art Beat (cause my dad was on it once!). read more

Don't know what I'd do without it! 99.9% of my "always watch" programs are on OPB. With so many really stupid programs on regular channels, it is so good to have quality programs with excellent acting and a reliable news program, nature programs that bring life to creatures of the world. It's been very distressing to watch OPB's pathetic decline. And this recent Pledge Drive (beg-a-thon) was the worst ever. Overall I'd guess that 80% of their programming, excepting news & interview shows, is reruns of reruns of reruns. Reruns from 20 years ago, five years ago, or last week are still reruns, people. Some of the Rick Steves stuff is so old the travel tips are no longer valid! Good shows like Antiques Roadshow run a few new episodes and then go to RERUNS. Other shows like History Detectives do the same thing, and then disappear altogether. Every so often we get a decent British import, but not that often. I just can't bring myself to contribute when most of the content is so mediocre and I suspect most of my money would go to support a useless broadcast bureaucracy anyway. How many executive VPs of Whatever are we paying for at OPB? How much of their budget actually supports fresh programming? These would be subjects for an Oregonian expose, if they chose to do one. read more
