It's great to have a station dedicated entirely and exclusively to classical music. The hosts are very good--pleasant and entertaining to listen to. The biggest problem with the station, at least in the listener's opinion, is that the playlist is dominated by big, gushy, booming 19th-century symphonies. How many people actually enjoy them? To be sure, "symphonies" are for many the pinnacle of classical music. But I dare say that for many, and perhaps for most, symphonies are often predictable and uninteresting. When I turn on KQAC, I'd say at least 7 times out of 10, I turn it right back off b/c of yet another oceanic storm of sound being blasted over the airwaves. Solo pieces, chamber music, early choral music, or contemporary pieces should form a much larger part of the playlist. read more

Thank you for being the least attractive classic music station in this country. Your selections want me to move back to Los Angeles where the classic music radio station was wonderful. The pieces you play reflect the depressive weather of Portland. Please also do pronounce Bach correctly, not with an American pronunciation. Bach was not American! Truly the most extraordinary classical station out there. We have tried so many over the years- WQXR in NYC, WETA in DC, classical stations in Vienna and Berlin. But none can compare in terms of amazingly diverse offerings and the fidelity is so much better than any other of the stations mentioned above. WQXR plays the same old 'pop' classical pieces over and over again. In contrast, AllClassical Portland rarely, if ever, plays the same thing. We have it on constantly and it is superb! We listen to it through our Sonos speakers and it feels as if the instrumentalists are in the room with us. read more

This year, ice dance re-changed my life. Yeah, I doubt you've ever read that sentence before. But it's true! Let me explain. I'd been one of those every-Olympics-only figure skating watchers. But during the last Winter Olympics in 2010, I got hooked in the spirit-fingered clutches of ice dance in a big, big way. If you've never seen the gold medal winning free dance of the Canadian team Virtue and Moir to Gustav Mahler's Symphony Number 5, you should, assuming you enjoy things that are beautiful set to music that is also beautiful. So I did what anyone else might do with the object of their obsession. I Googled the shit out of ice dance, watched a ton of videos on YouTube, learned the difference between things like the Killian hold and the waltz hold (not that I'd be able to demonstrate the difference), and read forums about the sport on the Interwebz. Now, if you were to mention ice dance - if you are like the majority of people, most likely that conversation would begin with "Hey, I had no idea that this thing called ice dance is a real thing" - I'd start babbling using odd words such as twizzle and you'd probably back away quickly. But what does this have to do with KQAC, the All Classical station? As it happened, learning about ice dance helped remind me of a love from long ago. Even before I started piano lessons at age 10, I listened to a lot of classical music, courtesy of my mother's CDs and tapes (80s baby, at your service) Mozart, Beethoven, Handel, Satie, Pachelbel, etc. It's so cliche to say, but I grew up on that music, and it's a hard part of your childhood to erase. I didn't even realize I missed the music at all, but when I saw it in the ice dance context, I remembered and was swept away by how much amazing music exists that you won't ever hear on the radio. Unless you're tuned into the 89.9 FM frequency out of Portland, or listening to the station on the Interwebz. If you do, then you've unlocked a huge catalog of composers, from the baroque to the modern. All Classical plays everything. I've heard folk, chamber music, and even started to dip my little toe in the deep pool that is opera, much to the chagrin of the people who share an office with me. All the tracks are helpfully listed on the web stream in case I want to buy the music. And it's all free. KQAC does a lot of pledge drives, but when you consider how accessible they make this genre of music (I think a DJ said they have the widest listener-ship across the globe, though I'm not sure how they determine that), you understand why they need the support. I have a friend who works for All Classical and even had the opportunity to record something for a project in their studio, so there is bias there. But this music makes babies smarter and humans calmer. Science somewhere says so. And if stations like KQAC didn't offer this music, in order to learn about it, you'd have to sit and watch hours of ice dance with me. I'll pour you a glass a wine. You'll be a believer. read more
