Enjoyed golfing there a few times. The course was well kept, and staff were friendly and helpful.

This is really a hidden gem more in the shadow of the Lake Shore resort courses such as the Gailes…read more Red Hawk is an Arthur Hills Design. Normally, I don't go nuts over course architects, but AH courses have a special flavor that I really like. For one, he lays out holes so that beginners can play them as well as making them challenging enough for better players. He does this by minimizing forced carries (only two here from the red tees, each under 100 yards), and by allowing most shots to be rolled up to the green. He also does things such on #12. Playing 179 from the tips, all carry over water, he has a closely mown area over the green. So you can use enough club, and if you go too far, you're not overtly penalized for it. Red Hawk has fairly generous landing areas, big bunkers, and some elevation changes. It's beautiful to look at, and almost all holes have their own identity. When you drive up to #3, you'll think you were playing Tree Tops, with about a 50 foot drop (according to google earth!). Our service at the course was terrific. The girl friend and I went up to play on a Friday at 3:20, which is twilight. While we were warming up on the range, the starter actually came out to inform us that if we would like, we could tee off about 25 minutes early ahead of a group of 8. We got up there before they came, and it probably saved 1.25 hours off our tee time. The other plus is that Red Hawk has electric carts. I *hate* gas carts. I was peace and quiet on the golf course, and electric does that for you. The last thing you want to experience is the roar of an engine echoing throughout the trees (and it does echo here!). Don't pass up a chance to play this course if you're in the area.

TL/DR: Challenging beautiful course that is under-maintained from its original days -- but still…read moreperhaps inappropriately premium priced. Bring bug spray! This is an interesting and challenging golf course. I have played it several times since it opened ~25 years ago. Beautiful scenery, cut through the woods with some relatively playable holes, some target golf, and some links style holes. Carts mandatory -- this is not a course to even try to walk. Found the staff at the shop to be super friendly. BRING BUG SPRAY -- especially if you are playing in the early morning before the wind picks up. The woods are pretty generous in their donations of all manner of flying critters, and if it's calm they tend to swarm. It saddens me to say that the maintenance of the course appears to have fallen off since we last played. Several tee boxes were shoddy and a few were obviously unmowed, fairways were in rough shape in some places, bunkers weren't dragged in the morning so they were full of footprints and hard pack wet and difficult to play, and greens pockmarked with all manner of unrepaired ball marks. The last two are signs of inexperienced (or rude) golfers who aren't cleaning up after themselves...but for $90+ per round I'd hope that the crew would take better care of the course. Having played most of the nearby courses, I'd say that Red Hawk is absolutely worth playing at least once...and offer my hope that they keep the course in better shape. This course, bunkers, and greens were disappointing this time around...and there are a few other very nice and more attractively priced rounds of golf within a 30 minutes drive of East Tawas.

They were really easy to find while driving down the road, and they also have a nice large parking lot, and clean bathroom facilities available. Also, the staff was fantastic and friendly, they made us feel really welcomed. Unfortunately it was raining when we first arrived, so we played some games before grabbing some ice cream snacks. My youngest was thrilled that they even had non-dairy ice cream options, she feels so special when places are considerate of those with allergies. They had a nice outdoor seating area, with half being under a roof so we didn't get rained on. After eating, the weather had cleared, so we began our putt putt adventure. The greens, and surrounding areas, were all really well maintained. We genuinely had a lot of fun, and we will definitely make another visit when back in town.

Seeing it grow into the beautiful 18-hole layout it is today has been great to watch. The course itself is short but surprisingly challenging, which makes it fun for golfers of every level. The mature trees lining many of the fairways and the well-placed water hazards keep you thinking on almost every shot. It's the kind of course where strategy matters just as much as power. The greens are consistently in excellent condition, some of the best-maintained in the area, and they roll true. It's clear that a lot of pride goes into keeping the course looking great. After the round, the restaurant is a must-stop. The food is excellent, and I'm not exaggerating when I say even the hot dogs are fantastic. They also have a great selection of cold beer, both on tap and bottled. The staff is friendly, fun, and attentive. It is a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The owner deserves a lot of credit. He's done a terrific job building the business and clearly cares about the course, the players, and the Port Sanilac community. If you're anywhere near Port Sanilac and looking for a round of golf, Huron Shores is absolutely worth the stop. It's one of those places that keeps you coming back.
