This is an interesting and challenging golf course. I have played it several times since it opened ~25 years ago. Beautiful scenery, cut through the woods with some relatively playable holes, some target golf, and some links style holes. Carts mandatory -- this is not a course to even try to walk. Found the staff at the shop to be super friendly. BRING BUG SPRAY -- especially if you are playing in the early morning before the wind picks up. The woods are pretty generous in their donations of all manner of flying critters, and if it's calm they tend to swarm. It saddens me to say that the maintenance of the course appears to have fallen off since we last played. Several tee boxes were shoddy and a few were obviously unmowed, fairways were in rough shape in some places, bunkers weren't dragged in the morning so they were full of footprints and hard pack wet and difficult to play, and greens pockmarked with all manner of unrepaired ball marks. The last two are signs of inexperienced (or rude) golfers who aren't cleaning up after themselves...but for $90+ per round I'd hope that the crew would take better care of the course. Having played most of the nearby courses, I'd say that Red Hawk is absolutely worth playing at least once...and offer my hope that they keep the course in better shape. This course, bunkers, and greens were disappointing this time around...and there are a few other very nice and more attractively priced rounds of golf within a 30 minutes drive of East Tawas.

Decent practice range is nice to get warmed up for fun day on the Dream. A unique arrangement allows you to bring your own beverages and stash in the cooler that's part of each cart. Over the years, I had often heard good things about this course located in Saginaw County but I'd never had a chance to play it. Like I had done many times before, I set up our tee time online a few days in advance. I was very impressed with the courtesy of the Pro Shop staff when they called me the morning of our round to let me know that golf carts would be only allowed on the cart paths due to a big storm the night before. That was a classy move by the Pro Shop staff and I really appreciated the heads-up. Despite the heavy rains the night before, we found the golf course to be in beautiful shape. In an area that is generally pretty flat, The Fortress has been designed to effectively utilize natural elevations to bring additional beauty to the golf course. An unusual highlight of our round was seeing a red fox in a sand trap on Hole # 16. And wouldn't you know, my ball end up in that trap! Overall, we really enjoyed our round at The Fortress and look forward to playing here again in the future. 5 stars!
