I've had a lot o-manju in my life. Without a doubt, this is better than ANYTHING I've ever had. The rice cake is so soft that it melts in your mouth. The red bean o-manju is better than you'll find in the United States and those filled with seasonal blueberries and strawberries wouldn't be found in Japan. A marvelous California addition to one of my favorite foods. The chocolate + nuts is one of the best sweets that I've ever had anywhere. A must stop whenever I go to Fresno and we ask friends coming to Southern California from Fresno to pick some up for me before they leave town. read more

I really like the homey feel of this place, if just gave an authentic vibe to it. The lady pull out three zip bags of mochi and that was our choice. The Mochi ice cream however was decent but there was no balance because it had too much dough and not enough ice cream. My family and I came here for the mochi ice cream after hearing good reviews online. I found admiration for the place immediately upon arriving after seeing the abundance of history that make up the tiny shop; it's also located in historic Chinatown Fresno too so that speaks volume for itself. When you walk in there are plants, japanese trinkets, fabric/clothing, and japanese desserts of all kinds that decorate the store--if you ask me, these really gave the place an Asian mom and pop vibe. I was super excited to select from the flavors of mochi ice cream I had read online, however, that day they only had two flavors available: vanilla and expresso chocolate cookie crumble. I was a bit devastated since I was really looking forward to trying green tea. Despite my slight disappointment, I ended up picking the second flavor. Each peice was $2.50 which I thought was pricey for mochi ice cream considering I can find a pack of 6 at my local Asian supermarket for ~$3. The presentation of the dessert (oddly shaped and wrapped in saran wrap) was okay, and, there were some ice cream that melted and froze which leaked out on the bottom of the mochi. I am big on visuals especially when it comes to food since I believe that we eat with our eyes first before our mouths so this was a turn off for me. However, I wanted to give the dessert the benefit of the doubt so I tried it out. I do have to say one of the bummers is that you have to wait 10 mins before you can eat the mochi ice cream because it is frozen rock hard, once, it has defrosted though, the mochi softens up and is delicious when consummed. Even though it didnt look visually appealling, its taste proved otherwise. The mochi was soft on the lips and ice cream was refreshing, it is perfect for a summer's day. It's also great that one mochi ice cream has 2 servings so you can share it with a friend. My second bummer was that I really wished the mochi was better spread out over the ice cream. Some parts had a really thin mochi layer and others (e.g. bottom) had a thick mochi layer. My sister's mochi, a vanilla favored one, however was evenly spread out so I got to see the difference. Overall the dessert is good but there is definitely room for presentation to be enhanced. read more

This place has the best mochi I have ever had. It surpasses any authentic shops from OC LA or San Jose that I have visited. I mean, the mochi is so perfectly pounded and it's so soft and made so fresh daily. You can even refrigerate it for days and the mochi does not go hard! FIVE STARS if I were to base my rating solely on the traditional pastries (red bean and lima bean fillings). But overall, I give this shop a four. Before anyone is contemplating on sending hatemail, hear me out. I have tried every piece of pastry they sell here. I'm more concerned with the mochi though. I could not stomach the ones with fruits. I'm talking the blueberry, apple pie, peach, etc. I'm not sure if the filling is also made in house, but hot dang they were SWEET.... and gross. Second, I get here like any normal person, who works on a weekday, would and the cases are empty by noon. The shop closes at 4 pm, but literally, during my first visit, there were less than 8 pieces of mochi left. Once I came at 1 pm and there were three pieces of mochi left, and all of them were the fruit filling ones. I'm curious what they do after they run out of mochi until 4 pm. Don't get me wrong, it keeps the business in high demand, but as a customer who wants to support the business, it is extremely disappointing to drive all the way to downtown during my short lunch break for nothing. Third, it's a traditional Japanese sweet shop, so it would make sense to have a somewhat "traditional" ice cream flavors for their mochi ice cream selection. I am expecting Matcha green tea, red bean, sesame, maybe peanut paste ice cream... something unique, but still caters to the Fresno palette. But no. I have only seen matcha once (and it was SO GOOD). The usual flavors are strawberry or chocolate, or strawberry with some sort of candy "surprise" in the center, like Twix or something, or chocolate with the same "surprise." Sometimes they would have sorbet, which the vegans would appreciate. I've had the peach sorbet mochi and it was delicioussss. However, like the matcha green tea, the peach sorbet made its special appearance that one time and it never came back for an encore. And for the record, I have tried their strawberry and chocolate mochi ice cream and did not enjoy them. I like chocolate and strawberry ice cream on its own, but there was something that didn't quite taste right. Lynn is professional and polite, but I have never seen her smile. No biggie, but from the way the other reviewers describe her as friendly and welcoming... Hmm that's misleading. She rarely says hi to me when I walk in. Lol. Also, the store has been closed several times without notice. Once I went three days straight during business hours and the shop wasn't opened. No signs, nothing. I want this business to last forever and ever. I really am rooting for many more generations of this family to take over and maintain its humble characteristics. But with such a unique shop like this one, I bet people would love it even more if more traditional Japanese pastries with the traditional flavors are served. read more

Stopped in on my way from Las Vegas to Sacramento on Saturday. The only manju I've had before are the packaged bean-filled wheat cakes you can find at Japanese grocery stores. These are filled rice cakes (similar to daifuku) and are much, much better. My favorite so far are the strawberry manju. read more

First, I will confess that I have never had real homemade mochi, only the ice cream kind I can get at Trader Joe's and some sushi restaurants but I was really looking forward to trying this. I finally found time and drove down there. Sad to say the neighborhood is a pit and I totally get why they are not open after 4, but having said that I spent 4 years in San Francisco and frequented some questionable neighborhoods in my search of good food, so the location wasn't intolerable to me. When I got there it turned out they were closed. Bummer. Had to try again another day. That day turned out to be today. A group of 6 of us went in just after lunch time and asked about ice cream mochi. The lady said they only have ONE left and it was peppermint but they do have some of the refrigerated kind. So one of us took the peppermint ice cream one they had left, two of us took the refrigerated ones and the rest had shaved ice. All of the items we had were good but here's why the low rating. The lady who was running it was extremely cranky and unhelpful. When she said that she only had ONE ice cream left, she actually told us that she had a bunch of them in different flavors in the back but they were for an order and she had to finish those before she could make any for the shop. So we go all the way down there to be told that yes she has them, but no she won't sell us any! REALLY??? Obviously it hasn't been in business for 100 years with her running it! We all felt really weird about our experience and agreed we would not be back. The menu items were good but not so over the top as to put up with the inconvenience and attitude. Sad. Family owned establishment for over 100 years in the heart of Chinatown. This place is a Fresno gem that deserves recognition and to be explored and enjoyed if you haven't already. No big signage, just follow the address on the businesses and you will find Kogetsu-Do. Parking lines both sides of F Street, and is free. Bring cash as this is a cash only establishment. There is a Bank of America down the street if you should forget. I have been here three times now, and each time enjoyed different flavors of ice cream mochi. Each time I have come, they have had different flavors available, and I like to try them all (take a few home and leave in the freezer). The red velvet and chocolate mochi was unreal. Also, I truly enjoyed the peach mochi with vanilla ice cream. The strawberry one had real strawberries and tasted great as well. Very fresh and not chewy like the packaged mochi you buy in the store. I usually like to leave mine out on the counter from the freezer for 15-20 mins before eating so that way it has some time to thaw and become the perfect texture, not too hard, not too soft.
