An excellent place to stay on Kona side. walking distance to Hunels beach (4 minutes walk away), town pier (0.9miles), all the shops and restaurants. don't have to drive in town and pay for public parking, leave your car on Walua Road and walk to every place you want to go. thee we hostel is first come first served for parking ($10/nite) Super-duper clean rooms. kitchen has everything one needs to cook in and save $ by skipping restaurant prices. can leave luggage after 10am checkout for as small fee, and not worry about your car. great sunsets!

This stay did not really match quality for the price but was very nicely located. Parking on the street just outside the hostel driveway was free, plentiful, and felt safe. The shared kitchen was open air, like most places, had coffee ready made or you could start a pot using the grounds provided (just a common brand, not Kona coffee), people were friendly (met lots of folks as one does in a hostel). Annie was easy to work with. At first she came across as "severe" but that's just her personality, I think. She accommodated all our requests quickly and was friendly when engaged. We rented a private room w/ private bath. For some reason, I was hoping it was a Queen bed but it was actually a Full size, which was small for two, one being 6'4". The room is not available at the moment so I can't see what the details say. This, and the water never really got hot, was probably the two let downs. Overall, if I had to do it over, I'd probably check out the other hostel (simply forgot in my haste to get something reserved) to compare location convenience, and wouldn't mind staying here again if necessary.

Ryan and Jasmine are the perfect hosts and they both radiate the love they have for the land, and everyone who joins them at the Sanctuary can feel it. When you put your foot on the land you can feel the love they have for the land and can see everything it is giving back. The land vibrates at a frequency that flows over you and clams your nervous system. Within minutes of being there you feel the calmness and serenity of the land and find yourself taking a deep breath exhaling and feel your body relaxing. Walking the land and seeing what Ryan is doing with his planting practices makes you understand what is happening there. It rained most nights when we were there and the gentle pattering of the rain on the roof is a wonderful way to fall asleep. If you're lucky enough to be there during rainy season you will understand why they call it a rain forest. There are so many fruit trees on the property there is always something fresh to pick or new fruit to try. There is a banana plant before the gate to the parking area where you can grab a few bananas before you take off for a day of adventures around the island. If you stay on the big island, staying a few nights at Hamakua Sanctuary will be the highlight of your trip, but I suggest a few weeks to really get to know the land and people who visit the sanctuary. We met so many wonderful people in the outdoor kitchen every morning at breakfast with baskets of fresh fruit and veggies picked and ready for you to cut up and sample. Some mornings we would all eat together and talk about our adventures the prior day. Connecting with people from all over the country and world. I know someone will roll their eyes and think this is too woo woo for me, but I guarantee within 10 minutes of stepping onto the land you'll be thinking, damn she was right!

The people that I met during my stay offered such special communion and welcomed me like family. We laughed, we danced, we spoke of the deep and the lighthearted. My absolute favorite part of my stay was connecting with Ryan, his friends, the other guests, and the folks who have come to work on the 'aina and be part of Ryan's program. The space itself goes above and beyond. The house is beautiful, well-kept, well-appointed, extremely clean, peaceful and serene, with character for days. The sheets and bedding are luxurious. Stunning, sun-soaked kitchen. Cute bathroom with a full tub! Gorgeous, big screened-in lanai (porch) for yoga, meditation, reading, or what have you. Separate structure just below the main house offers a peaceful little meditation studio. I have never seen anything like it. It was a joy to putter around the property and sit with all the wonderful beings that live there - from humans to dog and cat friends, duckies, and birds. The road on which this property is situated is quiet and pastoral with beautiful vistas, flowers, trees and more along the way. I highly recommend taking a leisurely stroll during your stay. Mana Loli was exactly what I needed, and if you feel drawn to it, it will be exactly what you need, too.

The restaurant located within the hotel is extremely noteworthy and well-known across the whole island, many people simply come here just to have breakfast lunch and or dinner. The pork chops have been written about all over travel sites and I must say I can still remember how delicious they were. A yelp or just like the photo that I took from this hotel, and it reminded me that I never added my review. I will be back on the island in the new year and look forward to coming back. What I will say this is far removed from all of the fancier hotels like Lanikai etc. this place is more residential for people that are looking for longer-term stays, and it's to my knowing that a separate building within the property is for residence or long-term stays. I do understand that some people have an issue with the tenants that live here versus those staying here on vacation. I luckily had no issues whatsoever. It's Hawaii, you're going to have roaches. The place is cluttered with old building supplies, trash, etc. it has no order to the place, it's like waking up in a flophouse. They have horrible hours, no character and lousy conditions. The walls are moldy, many rooms are partially gutted to bare framing, some bathrooms have had the showers ripped out and never replaced. The employees are so so. The girls are nice enough, but at least one of the dudes is a ne'er-do-well with a void for a personality who gave us a real attitude during the few unpleasant interactions we had with him. It's too bad because the location (central to Kona) is great. In my experience, it doesn't take a lot of effort to make a hostel memorable and unique. Patey's is certainly that, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. Next time I'm in Kona I will get a hotel or take my chances with the roving meth heads and stealth camp.

Annie also makes us all very uncomfortable as she will continually get in your space to clean and as stated, accuse you of ridiculous things. I genuinely don't know why she is in the hospitality business if she doesn't like people. I'm also pretty sure she locked our shower because we took too many despite being a company of 14. Must have AC in hotel! .3 miles to beach, NP! .3 miles to beach, car please! No closed door? NP! Can't close the door? WTF? Big Island Retreat, I thought this was a great place 5 years ago. I was okay not being able to completely close all the windows, listening to all the outside noises of wildlife, ocean waves, and other annoying human guests. No air conditioning, but I could tolerate the Hawaii's warm humid weather. A .3 mile walk in flip flips to the incredible Kahaluu beach with chair, snorkeling gear, towel, and refreshments was no biggie. Now that I'm older...I need to close all the windows and doors to keep out the noises out...and I don't everyone else hearing my noises, especially the romantic kind. The Orchid Room's balcony only had a screen door, no real door for privacy, so weird! Even if I could close the door, it would get really hot and humid since there is no AC. Nearby Kahaluu beach is amazing and a short walk away...but in wet flip flops and carrying gear it seems so much longer in 40s than in my 30s. The 2 story Ocean View room I had back in 2016 was more tolerable and private...the Orchid Room not so much. At under $200/night its actually still one of the more affordable places to stay in Kona. The Orchid room had an ocean view balcony, coffee maker, toaster, fridge, beach gear, and a TV you can't use after 8pm because its too loud since I can't fully close my balcony door. I might stay here again if its the Ocean View room, otherwise I'm looking for a hotel with air conditioning and doors I can fully close...maybe I'm just getting older, whinier, and crankier.

As I said previously, this place is ALL about location. You are literally on top of the water right in the heart of Kona Town! Pro tip: if you are a light sleeper, consider a room on a higher floor. We were here during a high surf advisory and the waves were POUNDING. We loved it but if you need quiet to sleep, you might want to mention that at check in. (For us it was a bonus!) The hotel and grounds have been taken care of. They are beautiful. Update: there is now a $25/day resort fee and parking is $25/day. Again, parking here is great and totally worth it. It now costs $12/hour to park anywhere in town. I'll upload a photo of what you can get with the resort fee. One thing related to the resort fee is that the pool now has an attendant. This is fantastic. Yes, like everywhere, there are people who will grab towels and throw them on chairs and then disappear. But she is all over that stuff! If they are gone for longer than a half an hour, she will remove the towels and give their chairs to other people. The only thing I wish they would regulate is the game "Marco Polo." I know a lot of other places do. Once you've listened to it for 90 minutes or more, you want to pull all of the hair out of your head. The pool is really quite small so I think this would be appropriate. There were about seven or eight kids running in between the loungers and screaming. I noticed this happened when there was a shift change. I'm not saying that the worker should be a babysitter by any stretch, but it might be worth seeing if kids could be matched to parents at least. So for us, the pool became a big Nope. We did have one hiccup with our room. At night there wasn't enough hot water. Oddly, when we texted the management the second day they told us to shower earlier or later. That seemed a bit flippant tbh, but when you're communicating over text, things can come across that way. They did offer to send maintenance up, but what were they going to do? We know how to turn on the water. It just wasn't hot. This is an issue they seriously need to deal with. (Despite this, I'm still giving them four stars because I love it so much!) Finally, the restaurant is worth mentioning. We love to walk around town, but we discovered that we really enjoyed having meals and drinks right there in the hotel. The food is good and the drinks are fabulous also. And, you are right on the water. It's just gorgeous. And it's clean! I also want to give a shout out for The buffet dinner. They have one night per week. We were not able to stay for that but, wow, it looked good and it was a very decent value. See the photo I uploaded. Next time for sure! We will be back! Hoping for hot showers next time, but we truly love this hotel!
