This stay did not really match quality for the price but was very nicely located. Parking on the street just outside the hostel driveway was free, plentiful, and felt safe. The shared kitchen was open air, like most places, had coffee ready made or you could start a pot using the grounds provided (just a common brand, not Kona coffee), people were friendly (met lots of folks as one does in a hostel). Annie was easy to work with. At first she came across as "severe" but that's just her personality, I think. She accommodated all our requests quickly and was friendly when engaged. We rented a private room w/ private bath. For some reason, I was hoping it was a Queen bed but it was actually a Full size, which was small for two, one being 6'4". The room is not available at the moment so I can't see what the details say. This, and the water never really got hot, was probably the two let downs. Overall, if I had to do it over, I'd probably check out the other hostel (simply forgot in my haste to get something reserved) to compare location convenience, and wouldn't mind staying here again if necessary.

If you're looking for sand and beaches, spend your afternoons in Kona, if you're looking to connect…read moreto land that is in harmony with the island, travel half an hour around the side of Mauna Kea volcano, to Honoka'a and stay at Hamakua Sanctuary. Ryan and Jasmine are the perfect hosts and they both radiate the love they have for the land, and everyone who joins them at the Sanctuary can feel it. When you put your foot on the land you can feel the love they have for the land and can see everything it is giving back. The land vibrates at a frequency that flows over you and clams your nervous system. Within minutes of being there you feel the calmness and serenity of the land and find yourself taking a deep breath exhaling and feel your body relaxing. Walking the land and seeing what Ryan is doing with his planting practices makes you understand what is happening there. It rained most nights when we were there and the gentle pattering of the rain on the roof is a wonderful way to fall asleep. If you're lucky enough to be there during rainy season you will understand why they call it a rain forest. There are so many fruit trees on the property there is always something fresh to pick or new fruit to try. There is a banana plant before the gate to the parking area where you can grab a few bananas before you take off for a day of adventures around the island. If you stay on the big island, staying a few nights at Hamakua Sanctuary will be the highlight of your trip, but I suggest a few weeks to really get to know the land and people who visit the sanctuary. We met so many wonderful people in the outdoor kitchen every morning at breakfast with baskets of fresh fruit and veggies picked and ready for you to cut up and sample. Some mornings we would all eat together and talk about our adventures the prior day. Connecting with people from all over the country and world. I know someone will roll their eyes and think this is too woo woo for me, but I guarantee within 10 minutes of stepping onto the land you'll be thinking, damn she was right!

It can provide deep rest, relaxation, restoration, and connection to the nature and life that surrounds you. It can be connection with the community, if you choose. The people that I met during my stay offered such special communion and welcomed me like family. We laughed, we danced, we spoke of the deep and the lighthearted. My absolute favorite part of my stay was connecting with Ryan, his friends, the other guests, and the folks who have come to work on the 'aina and be part of Ryan's program. The space itself goes above and beyond. The house is beautiful, well-kept, well-appointed, extremely clean, peaceful and serene, with character for days. The sheets and bedding are luxurious. Stunning, sun-soaked kitchen. Cute bathroom with a full tub! Gorgeous, big screened-in lanai (porch) for yoga, meditation, reading, or what have you. Separate structure just below the main house offers a peaceful little meditation studio. I have never seen anything like it. It was a joy to putter around the property and sit with all the wonderful beings that live there - from humans to dog and cat friends, duckies, and birds. The road on which this property is situated is quiet and pastoral with beautiful vistas, flowers, trees and more along the way. I highly recommend taking a leisurely stroll during your stay. Mana Loli was exactly what I needed, and if you feel drawn to it, it will be exactly what you need, too.

The restaurant located within the hotel is extremely noteworthy and well-known across the whole island, many people simply come here just to have breakfast lunch and or dinner. The pork chops have been written about all over travel sites and I must say I can still remember how delicious they were. A yelp or just like the photo that I took from this hotel, and it reminded me that I never added my review. I will be back on the island in the new year and look forward to coming back. What I will say this is far removed from all of the fancier hotels like Lanikai etc. this place is more residential for people that are looking for longer-term stays, and it's to my knowing that a separate building within the property is for residence or long-term stays. I do understand that some people have an issue with the tenants that live here versus those staying here on vacation. I luckily had no issues whatsoever. Don't forget to tip your housekeeper or leave a nice tip on the dresser before you leave

Looking at the photos posted by the owners, those are photos of the "nicer" suites. I can assure you that other than that 1 "dorm" photo, the room I stayed in looked nothing like the rest of the pictures. It was so gross that I left within 5 minutes of waking up. Never again.

First, the location is a few blocks from downtown so it's easy to walk anywhere. Second, the view is amazing. We booked a private room and he put us upstairs in on that has an amazing ocean view and a gigantic deck. This place is great for couples with multiple rooms that have comfortable queen beds, and also twins if you'd like. A couple rooms also have sliding doors and ocean views. Third, the room was spotless and the linens and towels were super fresh. I believe they renovated the entire place recently. You do need to pay $1 per towel. The owner is amazingly sweet and has a fun crew of out-of-towners running the place. It was super clean and they're very flexible about leaving your luggage early. We would definitely stay again!

Sally decided that we didn't need to use an overhead light on the porch and shut it off. She said "you guys have enough light from your computer screens anyway." We were also accused of not putting our dishes away when there were several witnesses who watched us do so. Annie also makes us all very uncomfortable as she will continually get in your space to clean and as stated, accuse you of ridiculous things. I genuinely don't know why she is in the hospitality business if she doesn't like people. I'm also pretty sure she locked our shower because we took too many despite being a company of 14. Oh and there's roaches/roach crap ON THE BEDS and in the kitchen, mice in the rooms, and ants crawled into my friends bed and got into her meds. I get it's Hawaii but this is ridiculous. On the surface level it's charming but it's infested. If you don't telepathically read Annie's mind that you need to pay 50% upfront, you're gonna get the threat of the police called on you. Wouldn't come back.

There is a Hawaii Coffee company HiCO shop across the street, so great breakfast/lunch eats and COFFEE literally across the road. Great if staying only one night, and not wanting to go to the grocery or use the excellent kitchen at the hostel. Also, a sort of mini-mart 7/11-ish kind of store for snacks and microwave dinner or beer/wine/ice cream.

Must have AC in hotel! .3 miles to beach, NP! .3 miles to beach, car please! No closed door? NP! Can't close the door? WTF? Big Island Retreat, I thought this was a great place 5 years ago. I was okay not being able to completely close all the windows, listening to all the outside noises of wildlife, ocean waves, and other annoying human guests. No air conditioning, but I could tolerate the Hawaii's warm humid weather. A .3 mile walk in flip flips to the incredible Kahaluu beach with chair, snorkeling gear, towel, and refreshments was no biggie. Now that I'm older...I need to close all the windows and doors to keep out the noises out...and I don't everyone else hearing my noises, especially the romantic kind. The Orchid Room's balcony only had a screen door, no real door for privacy, so weird! Even if I could close the door, it would get really hot and humid since there is no AC. Nearby Kahaluu beach is amazing and a short walk away...but in wet flip flops and carrying gear it seems so much longer in 40s than in my 30s. The 2 story Ocean View room I had back in 2016 was more tolerable and private...the Orchid Room not so much. At under $200/night its actually still one of the more affordable places to stay in Kona. The Orchid room had an ocean view balcony, coffee maker, toaster, fridge, beach gear, and a TV you can't use after 8pm because its too loud since I can't fully close my balcony door. I might stay here again if its the Ocean View room, otherwise I'm looking for a hotel with air conditioning and doors I can fully close...maybe I'm just getting older, whinier, and crankier.

Left the following morning before 7am, returned back after 6pm. Upon my return, my nextdoor neighbor (random family visiting from Oahu) let me know they noticed my front door was wide open when they were checking in around 4pm. Immediately called front desk to get more clarity. Received confirmation that there's no turndown or housekeeping services offered. Front desk person told me I could report it with security, who would create an incident report and speak to managers about it the following day. I checked out on Tuesday 07/22, called the front desk and left a message since they didn't open until 730AM. Called back again around 10AM since I received no follow up call. Spoke with Rooms manager Wendy who said she got my message, but also just arrived at the office. Wendy was able to get a room key report that captured all lock activity going in and out of my room. Received confirmation that no key was used during my time away from property to access my room. It was implied that I didn't lock my door good when leaving. Which I thought would be good news. Unfortunately, I spoke with the general manager Doug who confirmed that if I had left my door open, it would show on the key activity report as door ajar. There was no such notification of this on the report, and Doug could only say "maybe your neighbor was giving you false information." Having zero cameras on property, and no employees who could confirm whether or not my room door was either fully open or closed is actually insane. I stayed in building D, which is somewhat in front of the pool/activity area where a handful of workers drive to and around during their shifts. Security is only at night, and wasn't able to confirm or help with anything. When asking Doug what would happen if my belongings were taken or destroyed, he said "the property isn't reliable for your belongings. You'd have to file a police report, that's a criminal act." I can file a police report, but no one can tell whether or not my door was actually open or closed since there are zero cameras and workers in the area?? And no data on the key report?! It's extremely unsettling to experience this lack of care and service. Be extremely cautious when booking here.
