When my truck died in the middle of a busy Intersection, I needed a mechanic quick and somewhere to take my vehicle. Big Island Toyota inspected my 4Runner when I did an oil change. They told me the rear axle seal was leaking and gave me an estimate of $1500 to fix it. I took my car to Kona Pro Auto to get a second opinion and I'm glad that I did. Donny lifted up my car and found no leak at all. He said that he spotted a small amount of oily dirt near the rear axle but it was just some dirt. They literally saved me $1500. I will never go back to Big Island Toyota and let these guys take care of my car going forward including oil changes. read more

I have been trying to get my Subaru fixed for months No one was returning my calls and when I finally had two mechanics look at it, they were stumped. I hate to be the one person dropping a bad review in among all these good ones but my wife brought her car in for a simple oil change and afterward I noticed it was leaking. She took the car back and said the mechanic wiped away the excess oil but didn't note any problems. When she got home the car was still leaking oil and it was really noticeable so I don't understand how anyone could have missed it. Finally I told her to go back and insist that they redo the oil change and ask for an OEM filter. So she did and they said they did as requested but when she got home...it STILL leaked! We finally ended up taking the car to Subaru and paying them to do the job. When they took out the old filter it was aftermarket, not OEM. No issues since Subaru did the job. read more

Honest shop! I called because my Caravan wasn't starting, Donnie told me a trick I can do over the phone to help the car start easier, that really helped! Then when I brought it in, assuming it was a fuel pump issue, the problem turned out to be only the battery. My 2007 RX350, which is the same as a Toyota Highlander or Camry, started leaking red fluid from the front. That's never a good sign. In looking at it, the power steering boots had holes in them from the power steering rack leaking fluid into them and the fluid then eating a hole in the rubber boot. Had been leaking for a long time, but never saw anything because all the fluid was getting caught in the rubber boots. In googling it, it's a known weak point of these types of cars (thanks a lot Toyota). Further googling said it's over $3 grand at a dealership. Donnie did the whole job and an alignment (which is needed because he replaced the entire steering system from end to end) for less than half of that. Donnie is straight up, tells you straight, does quality work, and lets you know what's going on by calling you and answering his phone. Super rare in the world of car repair. Donnie worked on my other car too, again for way less than a dealer quoted me. Super rare to find a knowledgeable and honest mechanic anywhere, thankfully Donnie chose Kona to set up his shop. read more

I got a brand new car, and needed to get a trailer hitch added to it. After reading the instructions on installing the hitch, I knew I was in over my head. It required rear bumper removal, lowering the exhaust system temporarily, trimming a heat shield and also trimming some facia. No way things would look right if I did it. Donnie said that it was not worth spending that amount of money to do the repair since it is an old car and it will not affect the cars function. As a female, I only hope to find a mechanic that will be honest and not fix anything that doesn't need to be fixed but will find a solution to the problem. Donnie (the owner), was working on someone else's car and had the day booked til the next day. Long story short, he fixed the problem my car was having and also followed through with the proper procedures of my concerns with the vehicle. I left as a very satisfied customer! I took a few of his business cards and gave it out to my families and friends. Prices were definitely my concern but I thank God for this honest mechanic that informed me what didn't need to be fixed in my vehicle and just needed something simple such as compression air to blow out the hose to fix a few issues with my car.
