David changed my life. It might sound like silly hyperbole, but I'm not joking. After an overly enthusiastic visit to an interactive art show, I had a surprisingly bad right ankle sprain followed up by another sprain of my left ankle in a car accident just a few months later. I couldn't walk without pain, take stairs except for one at a time, or ride my bicycle for months. The physical therapy I was receiving elsewhere didn't help at all. I don't own a car, so my feet and my bicycle are how I get around. To go from summiting Kilimanjaro 6 months before my first sprain to feeling helpless was just brutal. I couldn't get around without help, I definitely couldn't exercise, and I was at my wit's end. After my injuries, I'd gained a ton of weight and was severely depressed. I wondered if I'd ever be able to walk without pain again or enjoy hiking at all. I have been seeing David for over 10 months. He is a unique therapist. I originally went to him because spinal stenosis had caused me extreme pain and walking was painful and difficult. I had a severe limp and was not able to walk very much without the debilitating pain. David is very intuitive and knowledgeable. He assessed my individual situation and needs. He tailored my therapy to not only relieve my pain, but to help me regain strength and mobility. My leg that had been numb for a very long time now is mobile, strong and no longer numb. I had originally heard of David from a patient of mine at Kaiser Permanente on Maui who had great experiences with his work. I had noticed that my patient's alignment and gait was improving and was able to do the exercises I had recommended with more ease than before. I attribute that to David's intuitive work. I am a professional athlete that has been working with David for several months now. His ability to read bodies and problem solve ways that work for different injuries and trouble areas is unmatched. He has not only helped me recover from past injuries, but he also has helped me as new ones have arose. I worked with him extensively before my first international competition, and it was through the bodywork with David that I was able to perform at 100%. I had issues with elbow tendonitis and some pain in my knee leading up to the competition and he helped by doing work around those areas, provided continuing support with the application of kinesio tape, and gave me exercises and strategies to continue supporting those areas while on the road. I saw David Koener for my excruciating foot, leg, and sciatica issues. When I was home (Santa Barbara) I had seen an acupuncturist, chiropractor, general practitioner, and podiatrist. David is my go-to massage therapist on Maui. I've been having massage treatments from him since 2018 when I had a traumatic car accident. He helped me heal severe whiplash. His style of massage is very unique in that he treats you for where you are today. Don't expect a cookie-cutter, rinse and repeat massage doled out to everyone regardless. Expect to be deeply heard, understood and taken care of according to your specific needs. I introduced my Hanai mom to him (she is 83) and he can be as gentle yet effective with her, since she is more fragile. My boyfriend and I see David about every second week and he absolutely loves it, he gets exactly what he needs in every session. He suffers with intense neck pain and headaches, and seeing David regularly helps him manage his stress and basically eliminated his headaches. My experience with David began due to over training injuries before Tokyo Marathon 2011. After being able to finish the Marathon, I continued to enjoy David's services prior to kick boxing matches and between other runs. I found his work helpful in keeping me and my body in tune to perform at my best. However, what was always most helpful was his focus on tailoring every session based on my input and what we agreed seemed necessary. Every session was specific to recent needs and health conditions. This was the 2nd time I've seen David.. I have chronic back pain due to a bulging disk at L5 that's that's been causing nerve pain. I splurged on a longer massage this time in hopes that I could relieve some pain before my trip to the mainland. Not only did I get a great massage, David worked on areas that he knew would improve my back pain. He gave me tips on better posture and how to relieve local pain at home by using a tennis ball. He took the time necessary to make sure I understood what he was showing me. It's now been 2 days since I saw David and I can truthfully say my back is much improved. David is a Gem of a guy with great knowledge in his field. On a layover in Kihea with no time to plan, but I really lucked out and got an appointment right away. David takes the time to get to know you and is very intuitive and observant. before giving any medical history he could tell where I had some issues. My session was 90 minutes and I received amazing body work for the full session. I was also given extra time at no charge for great advice and education that I was not expecting. As an intuitive therapist myself, it is difficult to find someone for my personal ailments. Upon reading David's techniques, I felt 100% assurance to schedule two sessions, while my husband & I spent our 1st trip to Maui. Where do I begin?! I was introduced to David through rugby playing friends who swore by him for thier rehab and physio, and I'm glad I took their recommendation! David helped me through knee problems and general body maintenance. David is a somewhat unconventional massage therapist, in the best way he can possibly be. He will spend time talking to you, and observing your body to figure out where your pain comes from before he starts working on the root of the problem, rather than performing a plain, standard massage like any other masseuse you can find out there. He will also give you advice on how to fix yourself once you go back home, with movements and self-massage advice.
