If you are headed to Maui, especially the Kihei area, I do recommend Chip and Awakening Hands Bodywork if you're looking for a very special massage/body treatment or find that you need one from having too much fun while there. I recently arrived on Maui very stressed out, a physical wreck from pain in my neck and back due to previous injuries, and probably from spending too much time hunched over my computer and definitely not getting enough exercise. I had also been having trouble sleeping well. Chip took one look at me and indicated that I might need to decompress a bit. The first thing he did was to have me fill out assessment forms indicating my medical history and personal information, just like visiting a physician for the first time, then he did a visual assessment of my body-spine, neck, hips and my limits in range of motion. All of this happened long before getting me on the table. I had never experienced this before and I've had hundreds of massages over the years. Once the clinical assessment was done, I went through three Myofascial/ Structural Bodywork sessions, during each one he reminded me to focus on the concept of abdominal breathing, a practice to unwind my mind & nervous system. I'm still doing the breathing part every day and it has really helped. (More on that below.) I was surprised that while most of the pain and tension I was feeling was in my neck and back, Chip began working on my hips first, releasing the tight fascia and muscles in my anterior pelvis which helped my low back release. He then released the fascia of my rib cage and shoulder girdle fascia allowing my shoulders to drop and my neck to lengthen. After three sessions and days of practicing the abdominal breathing, my spine was much straighter; my neck much more in a normal aligned position and my stride was twice what it had been before. I wish that I had been there longer for more sessions but since I returned home I have slept much better, have continued the breathing and torso extension exercises he showed me, am walking straighter and taller and overall feel so much better. As I mentioned before, I have had a lot of massages in the past and I would honesty say that the bodywork Chip did on me is the best I've ever experienced. He is a true "therapist." I came across Chip's website while looking for therapeutic treatment massage for my shoulder. I had injured it in 2012 and it had been bothering me on and off ever since. I was planning on being on Maui to see family, and knew I wanted to make the time to really give some attention to easing the tension in my shoulder. I found Chip's website, www.awakeninghands.com, to give me just the information I needed to feel confident about seeing someone new. I gave Chip a call, and left a message, and he called me back promptly. I always consider that to be a plus, because I wanted to get an appointment with him as soon as possible. After making an appointment, we talked about my shoulder and the problems it was giving me. I felt very listened to by Chip and appreciated the accuracy of what he was picking up on already in regards to my shoulder. The next day, I easily found his Kihei location and it was so comfortable and peaceful. I filled out the usual paperwork and we talked briefly again about the problems my body overall had been giving me. He listened with focus and was very present as I explained the issues I had going on. He then showed me a couple of exercises to help strengthen some of the muscles that were contributing to my problems. He was right on the money! I am still doing those very same, simple, exercises today because they have definitely contributed to keeping the tension out of my old injury. I then got on the table, where he began to work specifically into the layers of my tissue and then into the muscles in my upper back. I began to feel immediate relief in the problem shoulder, as he loosened and worked out all the tightness that I didn't even realize was there! He worked on my back in a very focused and effective manner, and I experienced a release of most all the muscle tension tied to my 2012 injury. He then had me do some breathing techniques to further my release of all the chronic pain that was in my upper back. It was so effective and amazing at how instantly better my back felt. I never had a doubt, yet it was confirmed at that moment that I was in the right hands -- Chip's. Before I was even done with the appointment, I knew I would want to see him one more time at least before I headed back to the mainland. During my treatment work, he had explained how my hips were a contributing factor to my back pain. We found Chip on our first trip to Maui, and I have been looking forward to seeing him again ever since. My first experience with him, was 7 months post baby... I was tense and sore from the constant hunching over... and Chip both helped release, relax, feel rejuvenated - and not only that - gave me his knowledge of things to do on the island. This more recent trip (6 months later), I called Chip on my first day of arrival (he's that good) and soon met with him. This time it's everything.
