Jake the company's namesake Jake is a kind man with a great reputation and surely makes one of the finest suits I have ever worn. J. Mueser offers a wide range of suiting options including Ready to Wear, Custom/MTM and a proper in-house made Bespoke. I live outside of the USA but return often for work. I was in the market for a new suit and as I have an athletic build with broad shoulders and chest with a thin waist. Any suit I buy off the rack requires extensive alterations to look presentable. J. Mueser came highly recommended by one of the best-dressed men I know. I did my research and the choice was clear that J. Mueser was worth a try. I sent an email and received a prompt response from Jake. Jake was cordial and immediately let me know that he would do everything possible to make himself available on my visits to his shop. Jake was so accommodating that on the morning of one of my fitting appointments I had to come in 30 minutes before our agreed upon time. Jake was able to open the shop early for me without any difficulty. At the initial consultation, Jake and I talked about his selection of suiting options. Jake is so easy-going and the vibe of the shop is so cool that I could have talked to him for hours. I wanted to have a full Bespoke suit made but given that I would not be able to have the serial fitting done in a timely manner (do to my traveling) so I opted for the Custom option. After we decided on the fabric and color Jake took a detailed set of measurements and I was on my way. Jake contacted me several weeks later and let me know that the suit was in his possession and looked beautiful. I excitedly returned to the US, 6 months after my initial consultation excited to see my suite. I stopped by the busy shop a week before Christmas and the suite was everything I had hoped for. The suit seemed to fit perfectly as I tried it on for the first time but Jake spotted a few areas that needed some adjusting. He completed the adjustments and when I returned two weeks later I tried the suit on again. I was amazed by the difference the seemingly small adjustments made to the fit of the suit. Overall I would certainly say that J. Meuser exceeded my expectations and I always get at least one compliment on the suit every time I wear it. I will certainly purchase again from J. Meuser and I would not hesitate to recommend that you have at least one J. Meuser suit in your wardrobe.

Black Lapel is a custom clothier that sadly lacks the quality and service they once had in the…read morepast. Years ago I ordered a full tuxedo from Black Lapel (for my own wedding) and they did an amazing job. It not only fit perfectly but was well made and the customer service was outstanding. Following this experience I continued to order shirts from them over the years. Recently I ordered a suit (and more shirts) from them and the customer service and clothing left a lot to be desired. To begin, my order of a suit with an extra set of pants and two shirts was split in half because they wanted to confirm my measurements were still accurate. After trying on my tuxedo, and confirming it still fit perfectly, they still insisted on splitting the order. I also asked for a small additional interior pocket to be added and was told they were unable to accommodate this. Seems odd for a custom clothier... I was told they'd make half the order and, once I confirmed everything fit, they'd make the other half. To my surprise, some 6 weeks later (I was told 4-5 weeks for arrival), my suit and a shirt arrived. Ok... is it really that big of a deal to hold the extra pair of pants and additional shirt? Those seem like much smaller items compared to a full suit. But, again, after confirming the fit, I waited for the rest of my order. After multiple inquiries by me, asking where my items were or for even a tracking number, I was still waiting. Now don't get me wrong, they responded, they just literally gave no helpful information: "Let me check on the delay..." Finally, 8 weeks later, my items arrived. Much to my dismay, however, the pants don't fit the same, do not feel like the same material, do not have a button on the back pocket, and are completely different interior construction (see picture). When I contacted them about this, which you can do via email only, they said "we recently switched manufacturers and this is likely where the discrepancy lies with your fit and finish." Well, that's the first time I'd been informed of that... not to mention it could have been avoided had they made the entire order all at once like I originally requested. Additionally, the additional collar stays I requested were not sent (despite being reassured that they would be). When I responded saying I'm disappointed and am questioning ever ordering from them again the have gone dark on me. They literally can apparently care less. So please, take my advice, DO NOT order from Black Lapel. It pains me to say it, but I strongly recommend shopping elsewhere; I will be.

After scrolling through nearly a hundred choices for providers, I landed on Black Lapel and I couldn't be happier! I wanted a slim-fitting three-piece suit in dark blue that was made from durable, high-quality fabric and would come in under $1,000. Thank you to Reddit for turning me on to Black Lapel as a trustworthy option. I worked with Michael at the Boston shop to tailor the fit just right, and felt like I was in good hands with an expert who had helped hundreds of men like me. The shop is easy to visit, up the stairs from street level in Downtown Crossing. Scheduling an appointment was very easy, as they have a lot of availability, and communications were great. I had no problem receiving my suit when placing the order two months before the big day, even after experiencing a small delay when my chosen fabric was briefly out of stock. Skip the department store and those junky online suit retailers, and shop in person with the experienced suit experts at Black Lapel.

TL;DR - shop here for your weird stretchy fabric needs but wait for coupons…read more I have been a long time customer at Spandex World (10+ years mostly online orders but a few stops at their old brick and mortar in the garment district). I will always recommend this store when a client wants something stretchy that can't be sourced locally and I have had mostly good experiences over the years. I have a bad habit of impulsively buying weird prints and basics, to the point that I might as well consider fabric shopping as a second hobby. Anyway. Things you'll find at Spandex World - bright funky prints, mesh, solid knits, stretch velvet, stretch lace, stretch denim, sequins, stretch PVC, milliskin, mystique... Things I've made from Spandex World's fabrics - dance costumes (SO MANY DANCE COSTUMES), activewear, damn near indestructible pants from their heavyweight Ponte di Roma (seriously holding up for years of regular wear and washing), a LOTR style wedding dress from stretch velvet, a fembot costume using stretch PVC... Things to think about before ordering - they run sales really regularly. Basically every holiday (even minor ones) and then sometimes "just because" there's a promo code, so sign up for their newsletter before placing your order. Coupon codes never apply to clearance (which is usually a pretty solid deal as is). The only reason I'm docking a star is because of old customer service issues when I was ordering online. At one point in time I needed some stupid amount of one fabric and inquired about larger quantity discounts (this was before they implemented the wholesale tab, which still is a very small selection). The pricing wasn't the greatest so I just waited for their Black Friday sale to order 30 yards and then the Christmas sale to order another 32 when my client decided to double up after the first pieces were delivered. The other issue I had was when I ordered two fabrics that clearly coordinated on the site (eggplant mesh and eggplant sequins), I received a burgundy mesh and a bright purple sequin. If I was going for flashy clowns it would have been ok. It took multiple back and forth emails with photos for them to relent and send me the right fabrics because they claimed they might not show correctly online. Either way I would expect the two to at least coordinate, i.e. 2 purple or 2 burgundy fabrics, since the same equipment was used for the product photos. They did end up sending me the correct materials (check the photo of the dress :)) and eventually a shipping label to return the incorrect fabrics. It sucked because my turn around was really tight for a showcase in South Korea so I wouldn't have been able to just easily ship it to the final destination if I couldn't get it in my client's hands in time.

Here is what you get when you order a custom suit from Mr. Ned:…read more Varham, son of the founder Ned, takes your measurements and quizzes you gently about what sort of suit you have in mind. They will make you any sort suit you want -- there isn't an enforced house style -- although Varham will steer you away from any utterly wrongheaded decisions. The measurements are applied to a pre-existing block pattern that best matches the cut you've specified. Second fitting is with just the basted body of the jacket to allow for significant alterations. Final fitting has the collar and sleeves already set, the trousers completed, with just the buttonholes and fine tweaking remaining. Total turnaround time is roughly 6-8 weeks; total cost using standard super 100/120 fabric is $850; functioning sleeve buttons and hand finishing along the lapel will run you $50 a piece. This is not true custom/bespoke given that they are working off an existing pattern. That said, I have to imagine they're drawing from a great multitude of proprietary patterns in order to accommodate all the sizes and shapes coming through their door. Moreover, all work is done on the premises, and the owner takes the measurements personally and shepherds your suit through every stage of production. In my mind, that's about as close as you're going to get to custom at a price that's remotely affordable without a finance job. Now am I happy with my first suit from Mr. Ned? Frankly, I am a tiny bit ambivalent. On the plus side: the trousers are fantastic and are perfect not just in fit but are of a piece with the ensemble. The back of the jacket and the sleeves exhibit terrific fit and drape. Finally, the lapel has a kind of graceful flow that says, "I am wearing a custom made garment!" to anyone sensitive to this strain of vanity. My criticism involves a rather imperfect drape to the sides and a lack of polish in the details due to the garment being largely machine made (although all the critical components like the sleeves are set by hand). At my final fitting, Varham pointed out this was my first suit with them. Implicitly the second suit would be an improvement, at least in the fit department. For most readers, $850 is a lot to spend on something that is only the first step towards a perfect fitting suit. For me, it's justifiable in that I wear suits for work constantly. I require a garment that is not only truly comfortable, but can withstand the wear and tear of NYC life; my suit is made from 14 oz Scabal Super 100 which is some pretty tough wool - it feels like a military uniform. Is it worth it? Absolutely. I wear my Mr. Ned suit more than any other. I feel more confident, thinner, smarter, etc. It's hard to put a price on materialistically driven self-worth, right? More objectively, Mr. Ned is widely regarded as the best game in town for custom suits under a $1,000. He knows his craft, delivers the goods on time, and makes the garments in NYC. I can't think of anyone else that can even come close to offering that kind of value for money. Cool Trivia: Mr. Ned is the preferred tailor of film director Wes Anderson and made all the suits for the Royal Tenembaums.

The first suit I had made turned out too boxy for my taste, but I recognize that as my fault since I was new to the custom clothing world and simply didn't know what I wanted well enough to express my opinion on the matter. That said, there were construction problems that rest on Ned's shoulders. Most notably, the lapel was not sewn properly and so there are dramatic, unsightly ripples at the notch. Also, despite being boxy, the jacket is incredibly uncomfortable. I can not wear it for mroe than thirty or forty minutes while working at the computer without cramping in my upper back. This suit sits in my closet and I wear it maybe 2 times a year. The second suit I had made turned out better. This was because I was clear about my likes and dislikes with respect to the previous suit. While the cut is more to my liking, there were construction problems that really detract from the suit. Most notably, the suit came with a small hole in the crotch. Seriously. Also significant, the shoulders were cut differently and so the whole thing doesn't look uniform. Arg. I wear this suit when I want to look decent, but don't care if something bad happens to my clothes. (i.e., I might wear it to a wedding reception where it is likely to have a drink spilled on it, but never to a fancy dinner or an interview) Less you think they get better the more you work with them. The third suit was a total disaster. The sleeves were opened for buttons then inexplicably sewn all the way shut. The sleeves were attached in such a way to make me look like a zombie while wearing it. The fit was a weird combination of boxy and too tight. Literally unwearable. I simply gave the jacket away and now have one pair of very, very expensive suit pants. For labor-friendly alternatives try Martin Greenfield in Brooklyn or Samuelson made suits from Paul Stuart.
