Electricity, surge protector is a must...ours activated three times in a two day stay, shut our camper off, the protector marked it as a brown out .... granted there was a windstorm but better safe than sorry. We ended up having to cut our stay in half because we needed to take our camper to the factory as we had some wind damage, naturally I did not expect any refund and did not receive one.

The house itself was welcoming and comfortable from the moment we walked in and the view of the water was a constant treat. We didn't understand how much the close proximity to the beach would shape our time at the house. Since it was so easy to get to the beach and into the water, we relaxed in the surf much more than we expected to. The key words there are "relaxed...more than we expected"! Our first night, as we settled in and noticed the unexpected amenities, we remarked to ourselves, "They thought of everything!" Our older daughter- who is an avid reader- loved the little touches like the reading lights connected to the bunk beds. Frankly, we are not used to being so well taken care of! Our family got to create some easy and meaningful memories during our time at the house. From dinner and games around the family-sized table to quiet moments of reading and reflection on the Adirondack-type chairs on the porches, there are many moments that we will look back on as special times in our lives together as a family. In the background of each of those moments was the thoughtfulness of the hosts who put the house together in such a way that we simply just enjoyed ourselves! We would definitely love to stay at Holy Mackerel again and we highly recommend the house for anyone who wants to enjoy simple comforts and drink deeply of the culture of the Gulf coast.

Their individual descriptions and photos seem to match. Nothing edited or fluffed. What you see is what you get. Houses are mix from new to 1960s beach bungalows with lots of character. If there's a problem - unexpectedly the A/C goes out. They are super fast to respond. Hurricane coming in- they will advise you and often work with you. Check out their places. Nice choices. Convenient to Houston and Galveston. Nearby Lake Jackson is brimming with places to shop, eat and street names to amuse you.

First, the positives: this is a beautiful campground with great amenities. The pool, hot tub, and lazy river are fantastic, and many of the staff members are friendly, helpful, and genuinely care about guests. Galveston itself offers so much to do--we especially loved spending time on The Strand and exploring the area. Unfortunately, the biggest issue is the management, which significantly impacts the overall experience. The park manager is unapproachable and runs the campground in a way that feels more focused on control and extra charges than guest satisfaction. Fees are added for things like early arrival, and communication often feels excessive and negative rather than helpful. While guests receive multiple daily texts about activities, we also received messages about things like dog waste in washing machines and stolen cleaning wipes--issues that could have been handled more professionally. There were also ongoing maintenance concerns both years we stayed. We experienced multiple days without water due to plumbing issues, and during our second year, the park was down to a single bathroom because of structural damage. We were told portable restrooms were coming, but they never arrived. Activities were amazing our first year, but the second year saw frequent cancellations. Even simple guest comfort requests--like putting down pavilion sides to block strong wind--were denied, despite those same features being used for staff events. Another concern is how complaints are handled. When an inappropriate interaction with a staff member was reported, there was no management available, and no follow-up from the manager afterward. That lack of accountability was disappointing. It's also worth noting that feedback appears to be filtered internally, meaning corporate oversight may not be getting the full picture. We also noticed an increase in police and emergency presence during our second stay, along with a shift in the overall campground atmosphere. To be clear, this could be one of the best campgrounds in the area--it has all the right ingredients. You can bring a cooler with non alcoholic beverages into the main pool area and you can take whatever you want (booze included) in to the lazy river pool area. The water in the main pool is COLD - at least on our visit...but our high temps were also around 85 with intermittent rain. $10 per person to get your arm band that is good throughout your stay. I didn't love having to wear one and I think a card of some sort would be preferred but in the end it's not a big deal. The beach was not my thing. Very rough and murky during our time. Nice enough sand but we traveled to Alabama the last 2 years and beaches there are much better. This place is 20ish minutes past the Galveston sea wall area so know that and plan for it in regards to groceries and other needs. Keep in mind...you are renting from individuals...so anything you read about carpet, cleanliness, etc is a reflection of the owners. Our unit was great and our elevator worked great too.

This…read moretime I went with three girlfriends and when we walked in the front door, the first comment I heard was, "I feel like I've been dropped in the middle of a romance novel." Even in January, it's a warm, beautiful place to relax. We sat on the deck and enjoyed amazing sunrises and sunsets, took leisurely walks on the beach which is right in front of the house, cooked in the well-stocked kitchen which has absolutely anything you can think of to prepare a simple meal up to a gourmet feast. One of the smoke detector batteries started chirping and someone called 911. Five minutes later there were five hunky firemen with sirens blazing to replace it. We certainly felt super safe after that exciting experience. Everything that can possibly be done to ensure a relaxing stay has been done, starting with a welcome basket full of treats and a bottle of my favorite wine. There were four of us, so everyone had their own room, but up to ten guests can be comfortably accommodated. My friends are already asking when we can go again and were looking forward to many more fun-filled experiences at the Galveston Sea Star.

There was spray can on mantel with note to use on the lock when it freezes, so owners know there is a problem. Constant spraying didn't unfreeze it for days. This was a worry as both security and theft issues, certainly reflecting very little regard for renters' safety or possessions. The bluray player remote couldn't be located. Source of smell in master bedroom couldn't be determined. I noticed either algae or mold on outside of house so maybe smell is emanating from something similar in walls. Also, bed linens didn't fit bed in master bedroom so week of sliding around the mattress while trying to sleep. There wasn't adequate dishwasher detergent or toilet paper, and the benches at dining table painfully pinched our legs when in shorts. Several days before check-in, the owners sent an email demanding we act as their maid service, which is deceptively, unethically and unprofessionally not advertised on the website, then left a note in house that their maid can be reached if any problems - conflicting messages. When I relayed I have never paid $3000 for a vacation, then provided maid services, I was told they do have cleanings crews come in after stays but "(s)ince there is no one coming in the same day as your departure," you are cleaning. I will be discussing with the Galveston County Health District both the legality of the owners' entitlement mentality in requiring renters to be their maids as well as the unsanitary conditions imposed on renters by the owners' refusal to professionally clean the beach house immediately after renters' stays. There are no outdoor recliners, which have always been available in our many years of beach vacations, other than a broken, rusted yard chair recliner downstairs. During entire week, construction crew walked through the beach house private yard to the beach, pipe was being installed along the road and each concrete driveway on road was broken with a jackhammer. Noise was horrendous, and we were unable to leave the house for a day while work was done on the house driveway. Meanwhile, construction workers were out on the beach taking pictures of us and urinating in surf. We have been unable to obtain the refund of our property deposit, despite carefully maintaining the beach house and leaving in same condition as check-in.
