The house itself was welcoming and comfortable from the moment we walked in and the view of the water was a constant treat. We didn't understand how much the close proximity to the beach would shape our time at the house. Since it was so easy to get to the beach and into the water, we relaxed in the surf much more than we expected to. The key words there are "relaxed...more than we expected"! Our first night, as we settled in and noticed the unexpected amenities, we remarked to ourselves, "They thought of everything!" Our older daughter- who is an avid reader- loved the little touches like the reading lights connected to the bunk beds. Frankly, we are not used to being so well taken care of! Our family got to create some easy and meaningful memories during our time at the house. From dinner and games around the family-sized table to quiet moments of reading and reflection on the Adirondack-type chairs on the porches, there are many moments that we will look back on as special times in our lives together as a family. In the background of each of those moments was the thoughtfulness of the hosts who put the house together in such a way that we simply just enjoyed ourselves! We would definitely love to stay at Holy Mackerel again and we highly recommend the house for anyone who wants to enjoy simple comforts and drink deeply of the culture of the Gulf coast.

Their individual descriptions and photos seem to match. Nothing edited or fluffed. What you see is what you get. Houses are mix from new to 1960s beach bungalows with lots of character. If there's a problem - unexpectedly the A/C goes out. They are super fast to respond. Hurricane coming in- they will advise you and often work with you. Check out their places. Nice choices. Convenient to Houston and Galveston. Nearby Lake Jackson is brimming with places to shop, eat and street names to amuse you.

The water in the main pool is COLD - at least on our visit...but our high temps were also around 85 with intermittent rain. $10 per person to get your arm band that is good throughout your stay. I didn't love having to wear one and I think a card of some sort would be preferred but in the end it's not a big deal. The beach was not my thing. Very rough and murky during our time. Nice enough sand but we traveled to Alabama the last 2 years and beaches there are much better. This place is 20ish minutes past the Galveston sea wall area so know that and plan for it in regards to groceries and other needs. Keep in mind...you are renting from individuals...so anything you read about carpet, cleanliness, etc is a reflection of the owners. Our unit was great and our elevator worked great too.

I'd leave anything valuable in the car. Just take yourself, a way to pay, and your camera. Also you might want a light jacket if its only 70 degrees because the speed of the boat will make it feel more like 50. The airboat goes slow out past the fancy houses until you pass a certain marker and then you can go fast. Capt. Hal makes you wear ear muffs.. the sound reduction kind, to protect your hearing. A good thing. The motor is so loud you can't hear anyone talk anyways. When you get out to the marshy areas there's all kinds of birds. Crazy pink birds, white herons, plovers, pelicans, ibises, other birds I don't know. LOTS of birds. Its very cool. We also saw sting rays in their natural habitat in the shallow water. Cost is 35 per adult and money well spent. I wasn't sure how my 60 something parents would enjoy the air boat but my mom and dad were totally grinning. They LOVED it. So if you need something cool to do in Galveston, make reservations a week in advance and go try to the air boat. You'll have a great time!

Someone is there with them but does not keep an eye on them. My vehicle was all scratched up while there and the bottom of our camper was dug in by kids and the owners are well aware there is a problem with the kids but have done nothing to correct the issue. When talking with the owner again about moving out of rv park due to continual issues they said there is NOTHING we can do. Why continue giving our money to people who don't care who they rent to? We pay way too much much money for our vehicles and our 5th wheel to have kids banging scratching and touching all over our belongings. First, the positives: this is a beautiful campground with great amenities. The pool, hot tub, and lazy river are fantastic, and many of the staff members are friendly, helpful, and genuinely care about guests. Galveston itself offers so much to do--we especially loved spending time on The Strand and exploring the area. Unfortunately, the biggest issue is the management, which significantly impacts the overall experience. The park manager is unapproachable and runs the campground in a way that feels more focused on control and extra charges than guest satisfaction. Fees are added for things like early arrival, and communication often feels excessive and negative rather than helpful. While guests receive multiple daily texts about activities, we also received messages about things like dog waste in washing machines and stolen cleaning wipes--issues that could have been handled more professionally. There were also ongoing maintenance concerns both years we stayed. We experienced multiple days without water due to plumbing issues, and during our second year, the park was down to a single bathroom because of structural damage. We were told portable restrooms were coming, but they never arrived. Activities were amazing our first year, but the second year saw frequent cancellations. Even simple guest comfort requests--like putting down pavilion sides to block strong wind--were denied, despite those same features being used for staff events. Another concern is how complaints are handled. When an inappropriate interaction with a staff member was reported, there was no management available, and no follow-up from the manager afterward. That lack of accountability was disappointing. It's also worth noting that feedback appears to be filtered internally, meaning corporate oversight may not be getting the full picture. We also noticed an increase in police and emergency presence during our second stay, along with a shift in the overall campground atmosphere. To be clear, this could be one of the best campgrounds in the area--it has all the right ingredients.
