Drive through line didn't take that long and service is nice. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A little outdated the place but I know to refurbishing is expensive.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food did taste good but that presentation doesn't quite look that delicious. I wasn't expecting the chicken katsu to look like that and that's why my review was a 3 star.

My husband said that the burger and the sundae were really good! I got the beef stew plate which was pretty good if you like more potato. The beef was really tender though. The mac salad was pretty good too. We went through the drive through and were surprised that the line moved pretty quickly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It brought us back to the old days, gave us that vibe anyway![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

After a day full of hiking and much adventure, my friends and I wanted to top it off with a sweet treat. We decided upon Kozmic Cones after seeing the photos Mac-nut rolled soft-serve cones. To our surprise, we found that this spot also doubled as a fast food joint as well. To compliment the sweetness of our ice cream cones, each of us got an order of fries, the perfect vessel for scooping ice cream into the mouth. Wow oh WOW were we surprised at how delicious the fries were!! So delicious, in fact, that we visited again the next evening just to order another round of fries! The mac-nut rolled ice cream was also tasty. Just the kind of sweet treat one would want after a long day of hiking and sight seeing. Overall, Kozmic Cones hit the spot! Great place to visit in the later hours of the day and if you're looking for something that won't dent the wallet and will satisfy your palate!

Not sure if I was blasted off to another planet with their "nutty cone" but it was barely passable. The nutty cone is a standard vanilla cone $4.55 which was covered in... you guessed it... macadamia nuts. There are two options- small and large so we chose a large since we were sharing it. The cone was stale. I hate stale cones. You get to the end and you are looking forward to eating it and blah blah blah. Staff ignored us in the walk-up line for a few minutes. They were a bit busy with the drive thru line. What can I say, not the best that the island has to offer but we wanted dessert and it was open until 7 pm. Blast off to another place instead of this one.

I can't eat ice cream because my gallstones might act up, but I do know ice cream. Kozmic Cones serves soft serve ice cream (and lots of food...not much of it vegetarian), and Patty was hankering to try it. She opted for the mac nut (see picture). Patty said it was delicious. Definitely worth the drive-thru wait. She did agree with other reviewers that the cake cone seemed stale. I took a bite of it. I don't think stale is the right word. In my experience, there are two types of cake cones: crispy and papery. Kozmic serves the papery kind...the kind that won't lacerate the roof of your mouth.

Beautiful servings! About $6 for a cone. Huge servings!! A Hilo staple. Go check it out!

    Banana split
    One l.

I order a banana split and I was disappointed because never have whip cream on it and the ice cream was super ice cold and hard in the middle as if it was poured in the container and freezed over night. Maybe the day before leftovers? Not sure. Just the fact never have whipped cream on it and the amount it cost....I had to give it 2 stars

There were various options for everyone and easy ordering on the kiosk with pictures, which was super helpful. The dining area is spacious and breezy. I got a green river and portugese sausage loco moco, which are two of my favorite things! A lot of places don't have green river, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it being sold here. The Portuguese sausage was juicy and the gravy was the perfect consistency for the loco moco. I loved how many different meat options they had for their loco mocos. As a born-and-raised local, rice, gravy, and eggs will win me over every time, and I really wanted to love this place for the history alone. I'll be honest though -- the hype set the bar high, and I left a little let down. The regular loco moco was just okay. The hamburger patty tasted pre-made or frozen, though the gravy was solid (thank goodness). The beef stew also tasted pre-made and was lighter on the tomato flavor than I prefer. I ordered the steak as well (around $30), and it came out very well done. On the positive side, they offer a ton of plate lunch options, the space is extremely well kept for a local diner, and there's plenty of parking. It's covered outdoor seating only, but it's comfortable and clean. What surprised me most was the lack of visible history. I expected to see more storytelling about the loco moco origins -- photos, signage, staff sharing pride in it -- something that really leaned into that legacy. It felt a little missing. Still glad I tried it for the experience, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the legendary reputation.

Awesome gravy, perfectly cooked easy over eggs, and decent hamburger patties make this a must for that similar loco moco craze that I experienced during this recent trip home to Hilo. I promise you, you can't go wrong here. Lots of parking, lots of covered seating, very friendly service, lots to choose from menu-wise, and bonus being attached to a liquor store (Kadota's). It's been years since I've been here, I'm so happy to see they're still around. Slightly disappointed i have to order mac salad separately, and a double loco is mot the standard large plate lunch size, rather a slight smaller. That's ok, honestly, I shouldn't be eating so much stuff that is the loco moco for one meal anyway, much less having one 3 days in a row. But, I'll be back when I'm back. Delicious.

My go-to drink I got 3 days in a row while I was back home was the Iced Breve - espresso with cream, with no sweetener & no added flavor. It was perfect for me.
