Every time we come to Decatur from Virginia Beach we always have to stop at Krekel's. It's become a family tradition. My husband is born and raised in Decatur Illinois so he grew up eating here. The custard so so creamy and good to eat on a hot day. read more

Place was very busy when we showed up, drive thru was wrapped and a good amount of people dining inside. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Ordered my usual triple cheeseburger with fries and a coke. I did notice all Krekels locations in the Decatur area are was cheaper than the Springfield location by a lot. Got my food and was super excited to check off another Krekels location from the list! So the burger wasn't smashed long enough to get any crisp crust or lacing, which was super disappointing. Fries were hot and might have been sitting under the heat lamp, but to be expected from how busy they were. Definitely a generous portion of fries. Coke was nice and cold for this hot day. Great service and awesome location and a local favorite from how busy it was. I would definitely recommend or return to this establishment! read more

Food is decent, but more than 30 minutes in the drive-thru line is not worth it. They are consistently slow.

Server/order taker was slow and very disengaged with customers. He seemed distracted and apathetic. Had to remind order filler to get my drinks and what they were. Food was just ok and probably could have been better if service was better. The dining area is very simple and sparse. I love krekels as I grew up here but the mt zion location is so slow. It takes 30 plus minutes to get through the line. I don't know if they're understaffed or undertrained, but it's pretty inexcusable to wait that long for a few shakes. And if you order multiple shakes offer a tray or bag. Last I ordered three shakes there was a hole in the bottom and the shake leaked in the cupholders. Great shakes but service needs work, please. read more

Usually a one star review from me means "zero stars, but yelp won't allow zero, so here is one star begrudgingly." In this case, I'm happy to give one star for a very good burger. However, since everything else about my order was messed up, and the young blond girl working the register is incredibly rude and ignorant, one star is all they get. Number one: they made my large Diet Coke when I ordered, so that 36 minutes later when I got my food, the Diet Coke was completely watered down. Number two: I asked for a small chocolate and vanilla swirl in a cup with a lid. Because of the lid, I didn't realize until too late that they gave me chocolate only. Number three: mediocre fries. Number four: I ordered the meal, but the same little blonde girl charged me for each item individually, so it ended up costing me more. I only got the meal because of the savings; I should've just bypassed the damn fries. read more

Normally, Krekels is a 5 star. Unfortunately tonight was a different story. I order two triple cheeseburgers and a shake for my son. Took a little bit of time but it was an hour before closing so I'm sure they were making to order. I got home and was enjoying my first burger and I found a long piece of black hair. Not a big deal, it ruined my appetite and it's nasty but it wasn't a big deal. My wife called to let them know that there was a hair in my food so they could maybe tell the employee to pull their hair up. After talking to an employee, she connected my wife to the manager. Instead of asking how she could fix the problem or anything that a manager should do, she insisted that the cook was a guy with short hair and the girl who packaged it had blonde hair, as if we were lying. We weren't looking for any refund or freebies, just wanted to inform the employee to practice normal food safety rules. Probably won't be back to this location again. I cant blame the manager for her lack of managerial skills. Being a manager at a burger place in Decatur, Illinois probably doesn't require much experience or skill of any sort. Has always been one of my absolute favorite place to get a double cheeseburger. The ice cream is absolutely delicious. My favorite is chocolate with sprinkles. Their milkshakes are awesome. The only complaint that my daughter now has is that they changed their chicken strips from cutting up the patties to actual chicken strips. She actually thought the other tasted better. Favorite place to go as a child and into adulthood. Love taking our children there now. read more

Went through drive thru and ordered 3 meals, 2 of which i ordered with large root beer floats. She handed us mediums and we politely told her that was wrong. She then said that is a large. I've been going to krekels over 20ish years and the large has always been the biggest size cup they have, and had just had one the day before. She held up the large cup and said, "i know it wasn't in this." We said yes it was. She went and talked to someone and said," it depends who is working the drive thru what size a large is." Seriously? Then she said we were charged for mediums, not a large, which also made no sense since she was claiming what she handed us was a large. She remade our drinks in the larger size and charged us more. Not sure if I ended up paying more than I should have or not. She had a horrible attitude and we will not be going back. If they did downsize their shakes and floats, she could have said that and it wouldn't have been an issue. I tried to leave a post on their facebook page, but that apparently got deleted. read more

When I was a little girl, we used to drive from Pana to Decatur to buy my shoes cause I had foot problems, and it was always such a treat to get to go to Krekels - look at the chicken car and get those burgers and lemon shakes. I'm old now - well, older and I stopped tonight to feed my crew - 8 burgers, half reg. half cheeseburgers - 3 orders of pretty limp cold fries and a quart of frozen custard. I want to comment, that I didn't go back and check at the ordering sign, but they DO NOT TAKE DEBIT OR CREDIT CARDS. That being said, they happily took my check - I had a big order and if they wouldn't they'd have been out $22.00. The burgers made it the 15 miles home quite well, but the lettuce was pretty wilted. Next time I think I'll tell them no lettuce. I tried the fries (of course) on the way home, and right out of the shop, they were wilted too... kind of blech. My kid puts them on his burger, so he doesn't care. We pitched most of them, so I wouldn't order again, unless we were eating there. I thawed out the custard and it was so smooth and creamy and just delish! mmmmmmm So to re-cap: They don't take debit or credit - so bring cash or checks. 8 burgers and 3 fries were just around $22 Drive up was super fast, considering I had so much. read more

My family & I ate here after a family outing on 2/1/2019. They got every order right! (there were 9 adults and 3 kids). We all enjoyed ice cream afterwards! The burgers are amazing. They're thin and cooked until just a little crispy and then loaded up with toppings (unless you like them without) and served on a fresh bun. They can be a little greasy, but are still the best. The fries are some of the best you will find in decatur. The ice cream is also the best in decatur, I'm not usually in to lemon, but at krekels it is amazing! Just thinking of that neon looking ice cream cone... it's great. This location is my favorite, because it is out in the middle of nowhere in Mt. Zion and has a drive through for when you are in a hurry. read more

Do not go here if you don't want bigoted idiots to give you your food. I ordered a large CHOCOLATE shake to be given a lemon. When I kindly asked the person to make it, she says "I've been working here for 20 years. I think I know what I heard." She did not repeat it back to me in the window and refused to get me a new shake without paying for another one. When I said, "Fine. I'll take the lemon then." SHE THREW IT AWAY IN FRONT OF ME.
