It is so unfortunate that Detroit has no major chain supermarkets. If you go "in the hood," you're taking a major risk with food quality. After several visits to the Kroger at 13 & Woodward where I was unimpressed, I ventured to this Maple & Woodward location. The aisles were well stock and the prices...well the prices reflect the cost of bring the goods to the consumer. At least I felt the food and other items were good quality even with my grumbling about the prices. Some of my fellow shoppers in the store had the B'ham snootiness, but hey my money is green and I can go anywhere. All in all, I get in and get out in under an 45 mins. I just hate the 12 mile drive to grocery shop. read more

Going downhill fast! Poor management. Employees always seem bothered, the shelves are always empty of popular items & the store itself is presented dirty. The carts are embarrassing. I refuse to get my deli meat there simply bc of the staff behind the counter. The 2 stars are only bc the staff in produce are great, very helpful and polite! I hate this Kroger. I'm not very fond of Kroger as a chain in general, but this particular one is the most aggravating one I've been in. It's weirdly laid out for one. The parking is just weird and I've nearly gotten in an accident there twice due to the confusion and the slope of the lot. The prices are very high and they are often out of things. But the worst part is that EVERY time I come here the lines are hideously long. They'll have a bunch of uscans open and just ONE cashier and a huge line at that one cashier since everyone seems to hate the uscans. The uscans there are so prone to problems and always requiring you to get the shared cashier to reset something or enter a code and he/she is always busy helping someone else, and then when they finally get there seem a bit clueless as to waht to do. I also just really wish the big box stores would go back to having proper sales rather than having the discounts you can only get with the card. I've got so many cards from so many stores I can never keep track of them all, and I resent having to tie my purchases to my identity just to get the sale. They've recently changed things so they don't even have a store card, and if you don't have a card you have to get out of line and go to the customer service desk, you can't even get one IN the line. I've gone WAY out of my way to go to value center or HIllers or Hollywood to avoid this stupid card thing. In an ideal world I'd do all my shopping at Trader Joes...they have WONDERFUL friendly helpful staff and NO uscans and good prices... but they also only have certain things. read more

I visit this store quite often and their staff in the deli and floral area can be quite unprofessional. Having personal not business related loud conversation while lines of customers wait. The staff even acts like you are bothering them if you look at them. Today for instance I was purchasing some hot food from the deli I had to ask the deli clerk to wash her hands and change her gloves after typing on her very unsanitary cell phone before fixing my food. read more

The Birmingham Kroger pales in comparison to the one in Troy. Not only is the store poorly laid out, but they also always seem to be out of the very ingredients I need. One one occasion, for example, they did not have any fresh basil; on another, they did not have any fresh cremini mushrooms, chicken breasts with the bone on (which I normally don't get, but this recipe called for it), or any fresh garlic left. The lines seem to be long at times, as they don't always have enough people at counters to accommodate the before-dinner rush. This place is only good if it's local to you and you don't feel like trekking to a larger Kroger someplace else. read more

Why I don't like Kroger. Each time I go to this store, the poor service is consistent. Last time, it took me 10 minutes to get lunchmeat cut and there was no one in line in front of me. This Kroger is infinitely better than its compatriot on 13 and Woodward (the Beaumont Kroger as I like to call it). It's clean, organized and friendly. The frozen section is weird. Things are in the frozen chicken section that don't belong there, like veggie burgers and other odd things. Otherwise the produce section is great, the organic section is okay, and the place is generally quite reasonably organized. read more

Kroger in Birmingham is my favorite in the area. It's Kroger. Not my favorite but the most convenient. They have a better than average display of seafood. Great cheese selection rivaling that of Nino Salvaggios and we stop in for sushi from the sushi bar quite often. Nice wine selection. Parking is abysmal. read more

I've shopped this Kroger intermittently for years, and every time I visit, I vow I'll never return. Why? Largely because of the rude staff. Most of the people who work here have a thug-like, in-your-face mentality. They'd sooner mow you down than show even an iota of courtesy. (Don't get me started on the dumpy, grumpy late-middle-age check-out woman who resembles Broomhilda from the comics.) As for the selection, the produce section is sorely lacking and I can all but guarantee you won't find what you're looking for in the organic produce section. My advice? Drive a mile or so east on Maple and visit the Kroger in the shopping center at Coolidge and Maple. It used to be a Farmer Jack. The staffers are warm, friendly and helpful, and you won't feel insulted and abused as you shop. This store isn't as well-stocked as it was before the pandemic began, but even so, it offers a far superior shopping experience to the laughable disaster at Maple and Woodward. read more

This is a funny Kroger because it is in one of the wealthiest cities in Michigan, yet it is smaller, more limited, than other Krogers in the area. This is fine if you need to stop and shop real quick. They have a decent produce section and all of their deli products are boars head brand. There is no real prepared foods section, just an area to get some tiny rotisserie chickens. The best part is the lines are always pretty short so you can get out quickly. The parking lot is small so be prepared for some jams. read more

So I've been in this store so many times to buy a sandwich for lunch as i work in the Birmingham area, and this is a relatively inexpensive lunch! The past several times I've been in there right around 12PM the sandwich area has paper over it(though i can clearly see lunch meat under it) and the employees there say that the area is "closed" without any further explanation. I've checked everywhere and even asked to see what time this sandwich section of the deli "Opens" but i can't find anything... read more

Sign on door says "Closed for Renovation" as of August 2nd, 2014. The store is about 10 years old and it was always a nice store. I don't understand what needs remodeling but they look to be pouring 5.5 million into the renovation process. There are to be closed for up to 16 weeks per the Oakland County Press. When I'm in the area for the next 4 months I'll be driving over to Meijer. read more

Nice enough Kroger. It's pretty clean and has a nice selection, but I've been a little spoiled by all the newly renovated Kentucky ones. A remodel is probably not too far away for this one. The can and bottle return is pretty efficient, though - we miss this in Kentucky so we always volunteer to return our Michigander family's cans! read more

I'm more than a fan. Again, I wasn't very complimentary about the older store, but I'm a "huge" fan now. Just returned home at 8:30 pm after a short trip. There were NO out-of-stocks for anything I was interested in and that NEVER happened before. Always felt that I had to shop early in the morning just after the night crew stocked the shelves. The employees are pleasant, available, and every so helpful. Nothing like the employees of the old store. So happy with the new layout, the wider aisles, and above all the selection, particularly for healthy and organic foods. Keep it up!!!! I'll keep coming back! read more

I'm not sure why there are so many negative comments. Perhaps there are many of you who would prefer pointing out all the negatives and little about the positives. The store is bright and friendly and has a nice produce market and a large selection. The beer, wine and liquor selection is great, as are the prices. i will agree with others on the customer service and deli. If they would just acknowledge your presence, it would be great. It is not unusual for other employees to be at the customer service desk buying lottery tickets and the employee behind the counter seems to feel they are more important than the customer. Do not get me started on the deli. Sushi is good and they will always invite you to try something. I thank Kroger for employing people who have disabilities and putting them in the right place. They are usually very customer friendly and are happy to have a job. read more

This grocery store deserves a higher rating, but it is severely penalized by its pharmacy staff. The one woman working the pharmacy was on a personal phone call the entire I wanna as there - including the 5 minutes I waited at the counter before she even came to me. I have honestly never experienced such bad service anywhere, I'm almost impressed. read more

If I could give this store a zero, I would.. went shopping at 10pm and was extremely disappointed with the entire experience. There were items upon items that we needed, that simply were not stocked. Every usual name brand that we like, is simply not stocked, or replaced with a Kroger brand. Multiple spills were noted on the floors that nobody seemed to attend to near the dairy section. Very poor attitude from employees. And to top it all off, after a long day at work (which I only had nighttime to do my groceries), there were no cashier lanes available and I had to go through self checkout and deal with a machine that obviously needed service because it wouldn't take my card. This store should have closed down, it's an embarrassment to Birmingham. read more

This Kroger used to be much better - before their much-hyped remodeling. The front of the store (I define front as adjacent to the street) is terribly equipped for check-outs: the kiosks are smaller than the other entrance which means there is very little space to set groceries. Overall the selection is not bad but nothing special (the international foods section is tiny and features less variety than this store had a few years ago). The produce department is nothing special, and in fact it is rather bad for someone who is shopping for small quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables. Overall Trader Joe's has better prices and service while Papa Joe's has fantastic produce which can be purchased very easily in any quantity. read more

The cashier whose line I went through was totally incompetent. She seemed to be slow on purpose but I can't prove it. The bathroom was totally disgusting. There was an adequate amount of help, some engaged in conversation with other help and not doing much. Can't one of them put on a hazardous waste suit and go in there and clean it? The sloping parking lot is hard to navigate. It is good that they hire handicapped people for jobs such as bagging but they tend to go unsupervised at times. It's a very nice Kroger. The store is always clean, and employees on the floor will often greet you if they see you walk in. However, I was there just recently and the woman working in the deli was very impolite. I thought maybe she was just having a bad day, but when I mentioned it to my boyfriend, who often picks up lunch there, he said the same thing! Now, I'm not saying she was terribly mean or anything, but she was very unpleasant and snappish. I was just surprised with the contrast between her attitude and the attitudes of the rest of the employees. read more

NEVER GOING BACK!!!!! Today was the day of my nightmarish trip to the Birmingham Kroger and my absolute last straw. I have declared that today is the last day that Kroger will ever get another dollar out of me ever again. Oh where do I begin. First off the entire layout of the store is just very odd and quirky. I was harassed and subjected to cop style questioning by an employee for going back and fourth to the yogurt section and changing out some cups of yogurt too many times. The reason I did this was because I changed my mind on flavors, and then swapped some of them out for a better expiration date and he gave me a very hard time about it. The quality and freshness of the produce is disappointing. I have to go on a long treasure hunt just to find a decent celery stalk or bag of grapes. Then we have the employee issue. Now some of the employees are very friendly and helpful; but most of them are rude, incompetent, and get an attitude if you don't immediately move out of their way while you are trying to shop. I find that most of the employees here have a typical Michigan bad "union mentality" attitude. This location deserves to be shut down and replaced with a more upscale grocery store chain that would be a better fit for downtown Birmingham. I would love to see a Plum Market or Trader Joe's take over this premium location. Oh and by the way more great news. The cashier informed me that when the horrendous Royal Oak location closes due to the demolition of the dump plaza at 13 Mile and Woodward all those awful employees will be absorbed by the Birmingham location. read more

I shop here about once a week. They do a good job of keeping the outdated food off the shelf and I have never gotten old outdated food. They also do a good job with keeping a cashier on duty for the days you do not feel like doing u-scan. nice store hours too. read more

The above star is actually half a star, to be shared between the floral department, Starbucks, and the pharmacy. Millions were spent for a rennovation that at first look is nice. But something does not seem right ever since it reopened. I am quite concerned that it seems like there is a revolving door of employees being hired and leaving, for whatever reason. Was starting to get used to the newer faces but now that some are gone, what is the point? Many products still are missing. Increased prices. Strange layout. Parking lot still a problem. This Kroger is pathetic compared to others that I have been to, and I have seen quite a few! I have moved around a lot and the aura that the staff at Birmingham location is far from welcoming. The managers do not have any concern for customer concerns, as I have witnessed personally. The staff just rolls their eyes the second you approach with a question. The customer bathroom is contanstly a mess with feces or it is out of order ( in which they will not let you use their employee facility) Every time I have been in there I find expired merchendise (not by choice...trust me) and customer service is always too busy chatting with their coworkers to handle the situation...they just get angry that you are impeding on their time. I am a local and am in there very often and things are far from improving. This is a horrible store, always a mess with horrible management/employees. I have called in complaints and all I am told is that they will handle the situation, but it is never fixed. I am not typically one to complain but I am fed up with my local grocery store being so unwelcoming and just a complete hassle. In all seriousness someone really needs to do something about the store managers there for not handling their company the way they should. Instead they act like it is some kind of playground or they are just there for looks or something but they are definantely not there for the good of the company. read more

I always liked this Kroger store in Birmingham, but a couple of days ago I was disappointed. I went to the refrigerator section to get my Bay's English Muffins as usual. I usually buy them in the 12 pack. They did not have anything but the 6 packs. Since I wanted 12 muffins, I put 2 packs of 6 in my cart. I asked the local fellow stocking the shelves why the did not have the 12 packs. He said that he was not allowed to order any 12 packs. I as very angry and I went to the manager on duty and told him of my concern since I had to pay about 90 cents more for 2 6 packs than I normally pay for a 12 pack of Bay's muffins. He said he would bring this to store management's attention. I wonder if their pricing policy extends to many other items to make up for the big investment they recently made to this store. I recognize that Kroger is entitled to make a decent profit but I object to them deliberately only carrying items that maximize their profits. Since I can buy these muffins at several Kroger stores locally, I will have to watch what I buy at the Birmingham store if anything. read more

Kroger should take a serious look at who it puts behind a service desk. This store has the misfortune of having women with attitudes. They ignore customers and put their agenda ahead of service. I witnessed a Service desk person named Bev be very rude, loud and accusatory to a fellow employee, someone obviously with a handicap After all was said and done, the complaint and problem was caused by another employee, yet no apology was forth coming. I overheard another employee say that the store manager won't do any thing about it because she's afraid of Bev. All this while having to wait to buy a lottery ticket. While leaving the store there where several young males in Kroger uniforms standing around the doorway,on their cell phones, blocking passage to the lot. Very uncomfortable at that time of night. I would recommend shopping elsewhere and avoiding the poor choice in top management. This store is exhibiting all the signs of going downhill. read more

This is by far the most horrible grocery experience we have had, time and time again...from the cashiers to the pharmacy employees. The store itself is fine in terms of selection, however the customer service is absolutely shocking. We've had a pharmacy employee yell at us that they're busy and just wait a minute (with 2 small children in the cart) and a cashier tell us to get the princess balloon ourselves since she couldn't be bothered and evidently didn't know a princess from elmo from sponge bob. They always have only one cashier open out of about 10 check out areas and are typically backed up 5 deep. The cashiers never help the baggers and they all seem like zombies or from another planet...everyone is literally in a fog. The parking lot is also entirely unsafe. It's built on the side of a hill. We are in flat Michigan. Go figure. You can't unload your cart without it running into your car or wrose, flying across the parking lot...let alone unload with 2 kids in the cart. Overall, this place needs to get bought out by another chain or new managemtn/ employees need to take over. we will be driving an extra 10 miles to another location from now on if that tells you anything...and we're from CA so used to not as great service. This place is shockingly horrible. read more
