Driving thru ND to go to TR NP, we stop in Bismarck to check out Capitol and try out a local diner for lunch. We see the menu and decide to try something other than the usual burgers, so we get the various German specialties. Let's just say there's a reason you don't see a lot of German restaurants around. Their special soup - knoephla soup - is like chicken noodle soup without the chicken, flavor, or the noodles. But you do get instead huge chunks of flavorless flour dough!!! The other German dishes are completely unpronounceable because they are 30 character amalgamations of 4-5 words that taste as bland as the aforementioned soup. One was a thin slice of meat heavily battered and then deep-fried. Yes, even state fair grease proprietors would say, "That's too much, dude." Maybe this is as good as it gets in ND. If so, they need to attract some Vietnamese who will open up $6 pho shops. read more

Came here for breakfast with my friend, they have some bucket of soup thing which we didn't get but I was curious, I guess its a thing. They didn't have waffles so I ordered everything one by one but their coffee was good and I would come back. read more

Extremely slow but friendly service! I had the cabbage rolls and borscht. While it wasn't the traditional Russian borscht, it was incredibly delicious! I went back the next morning for breakfast. The coffee was horrible but he food more than made up for it! read more

We really enjoyed this old time diner. Service was friendly and fast and answered all of our questions thoroughly. I had the beef Fleischkuechle and Knoephla soup. They have other German items on their menu as well. Very tasty. The soup is a dumpling soup and the Fleischkuechle is a meat pastry pie. There's a Krolls in Green Bay, WI that we like that is totally unrelated, but the name brought us in to this Bismarck ND diner, to which we've been a couple of times. Good service and good diner fare, very good, actually. Some interesting German fare as well. Recommended read more

Went here for pancakes one night and they were really good. Love the diner feel of the place and the waitress was pretty friendly.

Kind servers and good food. Milk shakes are ginormous! I recommend splitting it with a friend or two.

And while I have found the gross concensus on the Internet to not favour Kroll's Diner, I must retort that for someone who had never had knoephla before, and every since, having stopped here on numerous jaunts from coast to coast and reacquainting myself with the dish....the knoephla was quite enjoyable. Yes, I must add that I have indeed had better elsewhere (even including my own kitchen), however...for a greasy spoon joint version, it ain't bad....after all you wouldn't expect 5 star Michelin rating food to come from McDonalds...so why expect it here? So, yeah, as a good jumping off point for someone who's never had knoephla....give Kroll's the benefit of the doubt. You otherwise might miss out on what could soon be your next favorite dish. read more

Firstly, the servers are not wearing masks. Regardless of that, this place is terrible. The food is just awful. I ordered some type of German Breakfast casserole and my wife just order eggs and hashbrowns. The food was totally flavorless and bland. Not to mention, very unattractive. The bright spot was that our server was very quick and friendly, but also not wearing a mask. A good place to go if you're a senior citizen whose tastebuds no longer work. read more

The first night we were in Bismark we ended up here and had a very nice surprise. They have a lot of German items on the menu, including their Fleischuechle. I wasn't really in the mood for German food that night, but my husband enjoyed the Fleischuechle and the Knoephia soup. He seemed to really enjoy both. I was feeling breakfast and had the bacon and eggs which were extremely good. Sadly we didn't make it back there before we left, but I have to say we enjoyed or meal and our server was very nice and answered a few questions about the local area, including how to get to the Bismark State Capitol which was on the agenda for the next day. Sit down und eat, indeed. We've stopped at this Kroll's Diner twice now and each time I had a good meal. It's got your typical diner food, but also a few German specialties. They also have some specials like two for one shakes on Monday. It's always busy when we go which was during odd times of the day, so you know it's fairly popular. read more

Waited ten minutes to get greeted and a glass of water, was about to get up and leave (wish I had). A very pleasant waitress then brought coffee and took my order, never returned to check on me, 32 minutes later I still had no contact with any staff so I got up and left. Avoid this restaurant, worst service ever. read more

Ummm. Wow. This place is terrible. The service was great but their food was over priced. Its like eating at the poor version of Dennys, and I thought Dennys was the poor version of Dennys. I think I'm going to throw up. This place is a no go. read more

The food is greasy, and it makes you feel disgusting for eating there, but the overall cleanliness of the restaurant is pretty good. You can't go wrong with buy one, get one free milkshakes on Shaky Mondays. They have a decent variety, and even allow you to mix your two favorite flavors. However, be careful if you're a night owl. The staff is pretty uptight about their hours, so if you order past 9:30, they FORCE you to take your milkshakes to go. I would also recommend the Mandan location over this one for its more classic diner feel. read more

The breakfast I had was very good. Country omelette with a side of hashbrowns and biscuits with gravy. Very tasty. Sadly enough, the service was very poor. A while ago I stopped here for lunch. I had ordered a German specialty but wanted some salad instead of potatoes on the side to made it lighter. I had asked the waitress nicely. She responded to me like I was an idiot calling it a garnish. Last time I checked a cup of potatoes was not a garnish??? After some insisting she seemed as if she gave up "Well whatever but it's not going to be good!" She came out with three strips of lettuce and a cup of ranch dressing with my meal. Then she's like "You see why it's a garnish." Needless to say I haven't been back. Their knoephla is great but I recommend the one in Mandan. Much nicer employees. read more

It has been many years since We've been to Kroll's as the service was terrible the last few times- as was the soup-also paying additional for little extras is not good business- like cheese in the chili etc- Other places provide this freeof charge. When I said my hamburger was red inside- the waitress retorted" It doesn't look red to me." The knoephla soup is some of the poorest tasting around. Travelling through ND and hit Bismarck at lunchtime. Saw Krolls and thought we'd give it a try. Wife had chef's salad; I had smothered chicken breast. Salad wasn't fresh and hardboiled eggs old and dry. Dressing came in a tear-off Hellman's bag. Chicken was leather-tough. Smothering of onions and mushrooms reeked of old onions. Green beans had been boiled for a week. The highlight was the pasta salad that I had to order since this German wannabee diner offered no potato salad. To top it off they charged $2.49 for a glass of ice tea. You can and should do better folks. Skip this one. read more

I have been there three times for breakfast and had the German omelette every time and it was great. Service was outstanding all three times. Will definitely return there for breakfast the next time I am in Bismarck (which is frequently these days). read more
